The Death Penalty (1 Viewer)

Is receiving life in prison without parole even though you are innocent better than being executed?
Pretty much everyone convicted of a capital crime seems to think so.
Did you ask them or is this speculation?
Neither.
Link then?
I know I'm being a little argumentative, but if you were innocent and you had to choose between a life of max security prison, dying there vs. an execution after a year or so, personally I'd choose execution.

I think the reason most would choose life in prison is for the CHANCE that you could get out someday. That maybe you could be exonerated and released. I guess I'm just wondering what kind of life being in prison would be like if you knew you were never getting out. Isn't a big reason for people not wanting the death penalty tied to the hope of life outside again?
Unless you are regularly suicidal, I find that very hard to believe.

Checking in from Oklahoma. First thought is great Oklahoma makes the news again for incompetence. I work in a very large surgery center and several of the anesthesiologists have stayed the way the executions take place is archaic. It is really hard to find competent people to do the executions. Simple things like starting an IV can be botched. The drugs needed to kill the convicted are no longer available. Compounding pharmacies are hard to find to make a generic version of drugs needed. Sucks all the way around the guy was a POS who raped, shot, and buried alive a young girl.

It is common for defendants to accept a life sentence by pleading guilty just to get the death penalty off the table. Pleading guilty with the death penalty still on the table is extremely rare. It is also very common for defendants on death row to request that their sentences be commuted to life without parole. The reverse is nearly unheard of.

Under the current system, a prisoner has a much better chance of being exonerated if he is on death row than if he's serving a life sentence. (That's why the study referred to here used prisoners on death row.)

"On June 3, 1999, Stephanie was driving a friend home in her Chevy pickup and had the misfortune of arriving when three men were there, supposedly attempting to beat a debt out of Bobby Bornt, 23, who lived there with his 9-month-old son. One man hit Stephanie’s friend with a shotgun and forced her to call Stephanie inside. The men then raped the friend and beat Stephanie, when she refused to give up her truck keys. They bound her with duct tape and drove her to a country road. Still, she refused to say she wouldn’t call the police on them, so they forced her to her knees and made her watch one gunman dig a grave. When one man shot her, his gun jammed, while Stephanie screamed. The man cleared his weapon and shot her again. Even though she was still breathing, the man ordered his accomplices to bury her, which they did."

But we can't be 100% sure he isn't innocent. Its just too risky to use the death penalty here.

Fair and equal punishment is a key component of justice. The death penalty is absolutely warranted in the case of heinous, 100% proven murder cases. The Bible expresses this standard throughout.

It's all the same...can't have one without the other:

"For truly I tell you, until heaven and earth disappear, not the smallest letter, not the least stroke of a pen, will by any means disappear from the Law until everything is accomplished."

Oh, ok.

Why the eff accept a life sentence in a cage to avoid the death penalty? Cowardice is my only explanation. Me, personally? I'd rather die than spend anything more than a few years in the slammer.... Life? Please... Just kill me.

The death penalty just never really makes sense. You're rarely 100% sure and even in those cases the cost of executing someone is just too high. All this for a punishment that has never been shown to have any benefit to society. The death penalty merely feeds vengeance and bloodlust.

I don't agree with this. According to standard Christianity, this guy is just as deserving of God's grace as you and I are. (Or more precisely, you and I just as undeserving). By executing this guy and people like him, you potentially take away his opportunity to turn his life around and seek redemption. Jesus himself talks about the importance of looking for the lost coin and rescuing the lost sheep. That's this person.

BTW, I fully admit that there's a part of me who feels like this person got what was coming to him and that a botched execution is exactly what he deserved. But I think that part of me is at least a little evil. In other words, I get where people are coming from on that, but I think that POV is something to be overcome, not a mindset to wallow in.

I assume when bloodthirsty Christian guys like Jayrod want to justify their belief, they cite old testament eye for an eye stuff. And then, as Jayrod say that you can't have the New Testament without the Old.

How would you respond to that? I ask as a former believer who understands the basics of the old and new covenant. Is Jayrod just wrong? What did Jesus do to the Old Covenant?

Jesus fulfilled the old covenant. That's why we're allowed to eat shellfish and don't stone people for committing adultery.

Here's his confession... Dude got what he deserved in his botched execution. He's also been caught with numerous schanks while on death row, sent threatening letters to other victims of the crime, etc. etc.

Hopefully he's burning right now.
The last sentence implies a belief in Hell, which implies a belief in Christianity. Your stance is counter to those teachings.
I don't recall stating anything religious here. I was simply saying that I have nothing wrong with what happened to this animal and he should be punished for crimes he clearly has zero remorse for.

Since he's already dead, he'd only be burning if he's got a soul and its in a fire and brimstone version of Hell. I mean, I guess you could roast the corpse.

That states are looking to previously rejected execution methods indicates just what a problem this has become. Most of the industrialized world — the United States’ peer nations — did away with this barbaric practice :lmao: :pickle: long ago.

Holy cow, have we turned the corner and started addressing the issue of ridding the planet of losers? There could be hope for humanity after all.

Yeah let's celebrate being more like North Korea and less like civilized nations. Let's continue to pretend we don't execute minorities at much higher rates than whites. Let's continue to pretend we don't execute innocent people. Let's pretend that executing the mentally challenged is a good thing. Kids on death row? Awesome.

Revenge is not justice. And murdering our citizens hasn't stopped anything.

I am. Thank you. Now if we can really step it up and get these murderers planted in the ground in a timely manor, we will not only save $, we will deter others from thinking that if they do murder, they will get to sit on death row for the rest of their lives.

Get with the program. Hopefully being wimpy goes out of style.

There could be hope for humanity after all.
why are you cheering bringing back electric chairs and firing squads?
I'm all for getting rid of scum. Don't care how much it costs. Don't care if they feel pain when they die. Don't care about anything. As long as they are wiped off the planet.

Didn't take much to drive NCCommish outta here. Dude really needs to grow a spine. We are talking about killing murderers who deserve to die.
