"How the #### is this guy still pulling a MLB paycheck?" (1 Viewer)

Mark Ellis.

Pretty sure I've never actually seen him get a hit.
He has over 1000 career hits and hit over .290 last year in 436 ABs.
Mainly pissed because I have big :moneybag: on the A's tonight and Ellis has left a small village on base. :wall:

If you watched him this year, you'd know he clearly fits into the "How is he STILL pulling a MLB paycheck?" category.

He is beyond terrible.

Javier Vasquez. At least Ellis is a pretty good glove even when his bat isn't working. Why and how does Javier remain employed?

Btw, why would you do this? Ervin has pitched much better than it seems and while Cahill is a total ace, the Angels have the fifth highest team batting average in the AL. Oakland can't buy a hit or score a run. And over the past several years the A's/Angels were .500 against each other going into this game. I'm seemingly one of fbg's lone A's fans yet even I would hesitate before placing money on these guys. And I'm willing to gamble on just about anything. But laying money on the Oakland 'bats' is beyond ballsy. It's just stupid. :sadbanana:

You know a lot of other pitchers who've averaged 200 innings and double-digit wins every season over the past 11 years?Never quite lived up to what it seemed like he could have been, but there are tons of pitchers way less deserving of being on a big-league club.

 I'm talking about what they're doing now. Vasquez has no business still being employed.

Matt Stairs. A 43 year old pinch hitter who can't play defense or run the bases and is currently hitting .097/.263/.129 with a 35.5% K rate, with 55% of those third strikes looking.

He is basically standing at the plate while the pitcher throws the ball and hoping maybe the guy is dumb enough or bad enough to throw out of the strike zone four times. An inanimate object could do what he is doing this year.

Do I win?

Show some respect for the pinch hit HR king.

If the thread was "How the #### did this guy ever pull an MLB paycheck" I wouldn't have even considered him.Check out this at-bat, from April 14. It's the worst at-bat I've seen at any level of baseball beyond a tee-ball game where the fat kid swings and hits the tee instead of the ball.Nats enter the 9th down 3-0 against Halladay ...
1.Rick Ankiel doubles (1) on a sharp line drive to right fielder Ben Francisco.2.Jayson Werth singles on a ground ball to left fielder Raul Ibanez. Rick Ankiel to 3rd.3.Adam LaRoche strikes out swinging.4.Laynce Nix singles on a line drive to right fielder Ben Francisco. Rick Ankiel scores. Jayson Werth to 3rd.Coaching visit to mound.5.Danny Espinosa singles on a ground ball to shortstop Jimmy Rollins. Jayson Werth scores. Laynce Nix to 2nd.Offensive Substitution: Pinch hitter Matt Stairs replaces Jerry Hairston.6.Matt Stairs called out on strikes. Pitcher R. Halladay Batter M. Stairs Speed Pitch Result 1 92 Fastball Called Strike 2 92 Cutter Called Strike 3 92 Cutter Called Strike

Odd timing on this after his 7 inning, 0 run, 7 strikeout win against TB in his last start. His fastball was clocking over 90 MPH again, which may solve one of his biggest issues this season.

Gotta love Halladay's cutter sitting at 92 just like his fastball. But I agree Stairs probably wins the thread.

Post-Memorial Day weekend update ... Stairs went 0-3 in 3 PH appearances, slash line now at a robust .088/.214/.118. At least he can play defense run the bases improve the clubhouse mood play catch with Jayson Werth between innings so the bullpen catchers can rest.

I think the fact that the Nats used Jason Marquis as a pinch hitter today while Matt Stairs stayed on the bench (and rightfully so as Marquis has almost 3x as many hits as Stairs in about half the number of plate appearances) should make this one case closed.ETA: And Livan Hernandez is a better pinch hitting option than Stairs for the Nats too.

I could maybe see it if Stairs was the 25th man on a solid contending team, but he's tying up a roster spot for a franchise that's been in rebuilding mode since the days of Warren Cromartie and Rodney Scott.

The whole Stairs thing shukes me.. all I can guess, and I mentioned this in the Nats thread, is that they may be hoping to get him in as a coach.

Then there's Rick Ankiel..

Jason Kendall. He's been playing since the Reagan administration and has a face that rivals that of Jeffrey Leonard.

Yeah but at least Kendall is not on the field (might be yet)

I think the Nats would prefer to keep the youngsters down at AAA where they can get more at bats and more time in the field, rather than use them in a pinch hitting role once every couple of games. So, while they have some guys (such as Marrero) who are close to ready to making the jump, I think they will hold off until a situation arises where they can get more frequent at bats (I thought Marrero was going to come up when LaRoche went down, but then Morse came out of his slump). If they cut Stairs, I think they'd be more likely to bring up someone like Michael Aubrey, who is close to 30, has some big league experience, and doubtful that more development would do any good for him.

If he hadn't blown up his ankle he would be talked about in the same breath as Piazza and I-Rod.

Haven't seen him play a lot but he clearly fits in the defensive specialist category. Looks like an elite fielder from a UZR perspective.
