Directv NFL Ticket.... (2 Viewers)

Key points:

Talk to the rep by their first name, be personable

Be willing to get off the phone to make other calls/providers

Revenue-Current monthly plan(above 80.00)

Time with Directv(loyalty)

Im very happy, I also think you get better reception the earlier in the day you call. Later in the day, they have heard all the BS and sob stories and more apt to say no vs than when they are fresh in the day.
Good advice here. Last year I thought I could have had a date with my rep. She was flirting with me about my accent, sports I watch, and stuff and I was giving it right back to her (with my wife giving the eye rolls in the background). They always buy my story that the wife wants to go back to cable so I need to lower the bill and get Sunday Ticket or she's switching. Got the best deal ever last year. Waiting another two weeks before calling this year.

Just called and said I'm a loyal 15 year customer I see you're offering ST to new customers in promotion, I want ST Max for free. The rep gave me ST Max for free.

Did you go to retention or threaten to cancel?
I said "Cancel" when prompted by automated service. Went right to retention, stated they're giving ST to new customers and I want it too. I also didn't have to extend my contract.

Called and tried, said I want to cancel, was as polite as can be even had long discussions about family stuff with my rep. I was told since I got it free before I could not have it again.

They offered me nothing, so I cancelled. Not all great stories.

I just tried again and was offered like 50 bucks off the ticket. Not having any luck this year

I'm easy to please. Got Sunday ticket max for half off, plus $20 off for a year, $5 off my hbo programming for 6 months, and the sports package free for 3 months. I'm paying $160 for ticket and getting $300 off in the next year so I guess it's ok. The first offer was just half off and I said no. This was the second offer and I took it.

Success!

I went into the retention department talking about the SEC network.

Got st max for free

Got a one time 50 dollar credit

No other credits due to the fact I have hit the credit limit

No new contract

I am still under contract for 10 months so pretty happy here

Just called in for first and only time this year...this company is great with a deal. My 2 year contract was expiring at end of August. I was straight up with them and said if you give me Sunday Ticket for free I'll re-up my contract for a year. I only have 2 HD/DVR boxes total at my house and my bill is only $85/month. They accepted my offer like it was nothing and I was done in 5 minutes. The great news is that the 12 month renewal starts now and will be done in July of next year so I reallly only re-upped for 11 months. The operator told me I shouldn't expect this deal ever year. We will see!!!

Called. Said "cancel" and was forwarded to somebody who was not retention. Best he could do was $5 off for 6 months plus a $5 discount on HBO for 12 months. I said I need more. He said he can't but he'd send me to retention (I though I was with retention at this time). I said cool.

Retention offers:

$15 off for 12 months

$5 off HBO for 6 months

I said I'd like more including ST/MAXX so he talks to manager. Comes back with additional:

1x $120 credit and $10 off six months to bring the ST/MAXX down.

I say I'll do it if he can offer ST/MAXX for free. He said he'd check and that I'd have to speak to his manager. He returns 5 minutes later and says his manager will throw in ST/MAXX for free as long as I don't have to engage a supervisor (some sort of negative metric here?).

Done.

So, $360 in credits plus $330 ST/MAXX for free.

I do this every year. This is easily the best deal I've reached.

Thanks for the tips all. There really is a right and wrong way of going about this.

This happened to me before. I waited two days and called back. Told them that I needed to keep the service one more week because Comcast couldn't come out right away. Rep asked why I was canceling, I advised him I wanted ST for free couldn't get it. Comcast offered me RZ for 4.99 a month. Rep hooked me up and all was good.

They called me back and left a few message saying there was something they can do for me after I processed my cancellation. I let it sit for a bit and called back.

I started off being upset that they were harassing me after I already cancelled. Played the I aint coming back, I'm upset game for a bit and later received STMax, all premium channels for 3 months, $20 of my bill for 6 months as well as MLB extra innings and Center Ice. I did not have to extend my contract. Major selling point as my contract ends August 14th 2015. Leaves me set up to get a great deal on STMax to stay with them in time for football season next year. That is pretty valuable as we have seen it is tough to get a deal from DTV lately.

End result, I am happy.

I had to work at it this year, still not really satisfied. Been a customer since 2002. Said cancel, spoke to one rep and then got sent to retention. Was on the phone for over an hour and was starting to get ticked. In short:

$25 credit per month for 12 months

$8 credit per month for 6 months (towards Sunday ticket, reducing it from $40/month to $32/month)

Sunday Ticket Max for free (roughly $90)

HBO/Cinemax/Showtime free for 3 months

$100 Visa gift card

Now some will say I got a lot here. But looking at others who got ST completely free PLUS $25 or so credits for the next 12 months, I feel short changed..lol I still have some previous credits that have not dropped off yet from last year, so perhaps that is why they couldn't give me ST completely free. I may try again in a few days

What are you complaining about? $100 gift card and still not happy? Wow.

If you add everything up, I basically got ST Maxx for a total of $90 (which includes the gift card) plus the $25 credits for 12 months. Others on here got the credits PLUS ST Maxx completely free...and I've been a customer since 2002.

But looking at others who got ST completely free PLUS...
Huh? From your OP you said you got ST for free.
I think he meant he got Redzone for free but had to pay for the ticket
Sort of. ST by itself (not Maxx) is $240. Maxx is $330 (which includes Redzone). They gave me the Maxx upgrade for free ($90) and took off $8/month for 6 months plus the $100 gift card...so I'm basically paying $90 total for ST Maxx when you factor in everything they gave me ($240 - $48 - $100 = $92)

Called today to cancel my free 3 month HBO subscription, and after I asked about Sunday Ticket and if it would automatically renew. She came back and told me I was credited for Sunday Ticket Max for free this year.

Works for me. I swear I thought I got a email about it, but can't find that now. Been with them since 2006 and renewed my contract last yr with them to get it discounted.

DevilDog, what was your money thy bill before the call?
Sorry I'm just seeing this. Was paying 70 per month for choice package and 2 receivers. Now paying 61 for same package and an extra Dvr receiver, Sunday ticket max, hbo/cinemax/showtime 3 months, and a $200 visa gift card.

Just made "the call" into Directv and said "cancel" when the recording came on. The first person was not able to help so he escalated it the next tier or something. I was friendly with the female that came on and said that I've been with Directv since 2002 but the bill is just consistently high and my wife always complains about it. She proceeded to give me a $10 discount for 12 months and another $5 off for 6 months because I have Showtime. Then I asked what she could do about Sunday Ticket Max. After putting me on hold twice, the best she was approved to do was half off which is $163.93. I got ST Max for free last year and the year before so they could do it again, but at $163 I wasn't satisfied so I asked to speak to her supervisor. Again all he could do was half off ST Max, but he added another $5 per month for a year plus HBO for free for 3 months (enough time to watch Hard Knocks). I was going to agree since the discounts off set half price for ST Max but I asked that the $163.93 to be split up into 4 payments. He tried over and over again but could not split up half of the ST Max into payments. He said since he didn't want my account to go diligent, he was now going to override the other half of ST Max after saying multiple times he couldn't do anything else.

I received

$20 off the bill for 6 months ($120)

$15 off the bill for the second 6 months ($90)

HBO free for 3 months ($54)

ST Max for free ($339.86)

Total: $603.86

Basically if you call in trying to get ST Max for free and they say they can't do it, ask to speak with a supervisor. It looks like a supervisor CAN override it for you to get it for freeeeeeee!

Now let's just hope everything happens as mentioned.

i literally called in just to see if i still had a contract or not... the machine must have sent me to retentions because after telling me my contract was over the lady then asked me if i wanted to hear what offers were available to me....

$40 off for 12 mo ($480)

hbo, cinemax, showtime for free for 3 months ($120? - even was told it would automatically cancel after 3 months and i wouldn't be charged if i forgot to call)

free red zone channel (priceless :) )

I was floored how easily that was offered to me... better than what i got last year (last year i got $30 a mo off and RZC but had to sign a one year contract)

she actually offered me ST for free.... i asked was that ST maxx or regular ticket... she told me she couldnt do Maxx for free.... so i asked about if i could just get red zone channel.... she said I could do either regular ST or redzone for free.... so i picked redzone... i've had ST before and honestly i end up 99$% of the time watching Redzone channel so ST isnt worth it to me.

Made the call yesterday. Didn't even have to go to retention. ST Max for Free and enough credits to get my bill down to about $70/month with no commitment. I think its the choice 150 plan I have, so not huge package...but I am still happy. I just simply told the guy that my current discounts were about to expire and I wanted my bill to stay where it has been for the past year and I wanted ST for free. I even said standard ST without Max would work, but he said the current offer he has if for Max...so that worked out. They have hooked me up the past three years.

Just moved in June and avoided the contract extension at that time. My 2 years is up on the 10th of this month so called today and was informed I have the standard sunday ticket for free (per the move promotion?). I was offered 10 bucks off a month for 12 months. Going to call back later in the week and try for more (including the max).

Just made my call this year. A little more painful than last year, and I wasn't able to get everything I wanted going into the call, but overall I'm satisfied.

To recap, this is what I got last year --

  • $20 off a month for 12 months, and
  • $15 off a month for 15 months, and
  • Free Showtime for 4 months, and
  • Free Starz for 6 months, and
  • Free NFL Sun Ticket Max
Went through the same process this year. Called, got connected to "Programming" even though I said 'cancel' at the initial menu, but when I said I wanted to find out when my contract is up the lady transferred me to retention.

Once with retention, I explained I was trying to lower our monthly bills and that Comcast had been aggressive in advertising their packages (I didn't go into specific $ details, and he didn't ask). He said hold on let me see what I can do for you and came back with this --

  • $8 off a month for 6 months, and
  • $5 off a month for 12 months, and
  • $5 off a month for 24 months, and
  • Free NFL Sun Ticket (not Max)
  • $100 gift card (but this would require a 1-year contract, starting from today)
  • Free Genie upgrade
I really don't need Genie since we only have 1 receiver in the house, and I told him so. I mentioned that it was a decent offer but I was hoping to bring my monthly bill a little more if possible. He immediately upgraded the Sun Ticket portion of his offer above to include free MAX, and asked me what channels/shows we watch. I told him HBO would be nice, and/or Starz/Showtime. He checked his system and the best he was able to come back with was $7 off HBO for 3 months if I added that channel. I told him thanks but no thanks, I wanted to reduce my bill not add to it.

I went back and forth with him, with me primarily asking if I could get any more dollars off per month, but he said that was all he could offer me at this time. The reason he gave was that I already had active discounts on my account that was probably preventing him from giving me a juicier deal. Not sure how true that is, but makes some sense.

He did say he would put a note in his system saying that I was interested in free premium channels, and if an offer came up in the next few months they might be able to do something for me then. I said well if I'm on a contract at that point, DirecTV has no incentive to give me stuff for free mid-way through the contract, but he said their incentive is keeping their customers happy, at which we both chuckled.

At this point I was at a crossroads; I had already spent 10-15 minutes on the phone with him and had a decent offer on the table. I felt I might be able to get more if I declined his offer and asked to cancel (going through the game of chicken with them), and/or requested to speak to a supervisor, but I figured I didn't want to go through more hassle so I asked if my current promotions (e.g. $15 off per month for 15 months that I got last year) that hadn't expired yet, would be overwritten by his current offer, should I accept it. He said no, they would stack and stay active until expiration. At that point I said ok fine, sign me up.

Till next year.....

Been playing this game with Directv for what seems like eons now and its always the same thing. Be persistent, call their bluff even if you hang that phone up with an agreement in place to cancel service because they WILL contact you back and try to make it right.

Worst case scenario, you walk and then guess what, you can call them back in the next few days (I HAVE DONE THIS) after you cancel and start up new service with all the promo stuff. This part amazes me. I once cancelled service. THen thought "crap, they got me." I called back, ready to tuck my tail and they started setting me up like a new customer. I played along thinking as soon as I give them an address or my credit card # for the credit check, it will flag something...NOPE. Went through...WELCOME NEW CUSTOMER...here's your 20XX version of free ST. Amazing.

Good deal. choice 150 plus the ticket and any free perks they toss at you for a few months for $70...good deal.

First stab at yearly call- I strung it out a bit out of general interest. Actually sat and chatted with the front line 'bill specialists' types and found the initial offers seem to be even worse than usual. Best he came with was 5$ off HBO for 6.

So I asked what it would cost me to get out of my contract (had the genie upgrade last year so i've got a year left- that obviously affects the quality of offers) and that got me over to retention. Got a no-nonsense lady- very pleasant but i could tell right away she wasn't succumbing to the charm offensive. Normally i would have cut it short and called back but, like I said, I wanted to see the state of things. Tossed out the old chestnuts (long time customer, bummed out newbies get ST for free, Dish is knocking down my door). She knew her Dish numbers cold but i still demonstrated even with buying out my contract i'd still save $300 over the next year and get Red Zone for free. So. Charm plus stone cold numbers managed to net me an offer of 8$/mo off ST, 5$/mo off HBO for 6, $10/mo off service for 12. So 23$/mo, about $200 for the year, and i still pay for ST (let alone Max).

Needless to say i politely declined (well I said i'd think about it). I did find out that I could set up a cancel date (gotta set it before the ST deadline in early Sept). I'll try once or twice more in the next couple days and if they cant make me a real offer i'll set the cancel date for the end of August and see if i start getting phone calls.

As noted- this isn't the way to go about the call, but i wanted to check in and see what theyre floating this year. For anybody without this kind of time to waste- just call retention, threaten to leave, and see what they offer. If it sucks just say you'll think about it and call back a few more times. I'm probably going to try setting up the actual cancellation as the guys above did, see if that is the path of least resistance now. And yeah, its crap that long time customers have to go through this just to get what they give brand new customers for nothin. If ST was reasonably priced I wouldn't bother, but now its a point of pride.

I'm under the same contract (genie upgrade last year) and that's the exact same offer they gave me.

I called back and got a different no nonsense guy who was familiar with the game. He gave it to me straight and said that usually the offer for free ST would come up in the computer but it wasn't for me. His first thought was maybe calling a little closer when DTV was pushing the free ST advertising for new subscribers. Then he noticed that I had been auto-billed for ST renewal already (first payment at $39.99) and thought that might be causing it to not come up with any offers for ST (since as far as the system was concerned, I already had it). So he wiped that charge off and canceled the ST renewal and said to call back in two days to see if that would trigger the system to bring up the ST offer.

That must be new, or maybe even that depends on who you get. I was without Directv for a year around 2000-2001. When I called up to get the deals they were advertising for new customers they said since I had previously had Directv I wasn't a new customer. Nice to know that enough competition makes these companies treat people right.

For me it has been easier ever since I got them to give me free ST for the first time (3 or 4 years ago).... I had it setup where my contract expired every August, which is obviously perfect timing to try to get free ST (although this year I didn't even have to commit to 12 months). They have tried extending me to 2 years by offering me the Genie, etc but I always turn that down so I am set to negotiate every August.

Anyway, I go about it a little different. I call them and say something along the lines of "My discounts are about to expire, which is going to raise my bill XX/month, which I obviously can't have. I want to make this as simple as possible without a bunch of back and fourth, so if you can give me what you have given me for the past few years (about 70/month and free ST) I will commit to another 12 months." Seems to be working...

Just called, lowered my bill from $93 before tax to $67.

Gained ST MAX

Showtime for free for 4 months, doesn't automatically renew.

Upgraded from Entertainment to Choice(SEC Network) for $30 off for 12 months.

The woman I talked to told me I can call back in 12 months and do it all over again.

I don't know how it works in their matrix world. I was surprised/shocked myself, but I literally cancelled, called back within 48 hours with the same phone number, address, etc, and they walked me through like they had never done business with me. It's kind of funny (and probably does depend a lot on who you connect with on the other end of that line) but even when they start their blanket pitch and I cut them off and said "I know exactly how this works...here is what I want to sign up with", they still said 'ok".

I think it is a lot like what I read on here or somewhere the other day: If you are familiar with call centers, you know that if you are just persistent and grind on these guys enough, you will sooner or later hit that nerve that gives you what you want.

Glad that works for you but kinda surprised it does because we go into it on a 24 month commitment and they do a pretty thorough job explaining that after 12 months, you have this rate. I can see that working though because to break the agreement at that point costs $240 ($20/mo x months left on commitment) and if your bill is going to go up by $30 or so, you can always pitch the thought "well, its actually cheaper to break the commit and go somewhere else than it is to pay the regular rate. Maybe sprinkle in a story about how you can't afford it or something..They will likely think "getting $70/mo ($840/yr) is better than losing a customer and getting $240.

At the end of the day, they want to retain and more money > less or no money coming in. And, as we have already discussed a bit, they seem to be open to letting you walk and then treating you as a new customer again.

Just made my call. I have the Choice package, 1HDR DVR and 2 other receivers in the house. We were paying for HBO, Showtime, and Cinemax. My wife is supposed to tell me when our free things expire and she forgot. So we were paying $136 a month. My contract is over at the end of September. I just called to talk to them 5 minutes ago...

They offered me the "new customer deal" for $78.99 for 12 months plus 3 months of free HBO, Showtime, Cinemax plus they will throw in ST for free. I told them I'd think about it and talk to my wife. We are having a kid in September and looking to save money so this is a "good" deal but wondering if I can make it even better.

Does it have to be an annual call? I'm at 85 a month now, but my $15.00 credit is coming off real soon. I recieved ticket a couple months ago for the second year in a row, but was wondering if I'd be able to add credits onto my account once that $15.00 one falls off. Anyone call 2-3 times? or just every August

I've called multiple times a year about lowering my bill once credits roll off. I always call... don't always get any better deals. About 6 months ago I called and got $30 off our bill for 3 months. I just asked if there was any way I could save some extra $$ and they checked and they gave me a couple movie channels for free basically.

I called yesterday after seeing that I had been automatically charged my first installment for Sunday Ticket.

Told them I was unhappy with the monthly payments and that, as much as I loved ST, I didn't want to pay for it. Also told them that I was considering cancelling because wife was unhappy with the high payment/construction work keeping budget tight/etc.

I'm out of contract as of early July and my bill is around $140, mostly because of having various receivers. I have a $70-some dollar a month package with HBO.

Long story short, I got transferred to retentions and walked out with:

- 1 year commitment renewal

- ST for free (they cancelled the current charge and credited my account)

- $5 off for 6 months

- $5 off for 12 months

- $5 off for 24 months

- $3 (I think) off for HBO for 6 months

Was also offered free genie upgrades but that would've required a 2-year commitment and I wasn't ready for that so I politely declined. Maybe not the best offer, but I thought it was pretty good, only required a 1 year renewal and had a pleasant conversation. Would rather end on a good note than to have made the conversation hard for only a few bucks more when all I really wanted was ST :)

WOW...I just got off the phone with Direct TV and was floored that I'll I was offered was $8 off a month from the Sunday Ticket making the payment $31.99 instead of $39.99 for six payments.

I just finished my first year with Direct TV, and like everyone else I received the Ticket for free as a new subscriber. I have a 2 year agreement, which included an automatic renewal of the ticket at full price.

I called and talked to an initial representative and then was transferred to retention. I was on the phone for almost 40 mins and was told that there were no promotions and $8 off was the best that she could do. I explained that as a former comcast/xfinity customer that I was able to get the Red Zone package at $5 a month during the NFL season, and that the only way that I can get the Red Zone is to pay more to get the ST Max. I also explained that I already pay for the MLB Xtra Innings.

So needless to say, I canceled my Sunday Ticket this morning. I know in reading other peoples' responses that some people did call back after a few days and were offered it for free.

Basically, I am asking for any and all advice from people who have had success with getting the Ticket for free.

The problem you have is you have a contract. The mistake you made was having a 2 year signing. Basically you are Vernon Davis and DTV are the Niners.

I was flat out told, because I got it free last year, i will NOT be getting it free this year. This was by retention. Only thing they "gave" me was the full Sunday Ticket that comes with Red Zone, tablet viewing, etc. for the price of the regular ticket. So basically $100 off. I've called like 5 times over the last 6 weeks too.

There's probably some other 'hidden' metric they are using, since clearly many of us have been able to call every year and get it free, for many years in a row.
