DB Kick/Punt Returner Thread (1 Viewer)

GreggyFresh

Footballguy
Does anyone know where I can find the annual thread discussing which DBs have the potential to accrue return yardage?

Locating players like Josh Wilson and Danniel Manning have been a core draft strategy for me in my IDP league.

Anyone have a link?

If not, perhaps this becomes it. Anyone have any thoughts?

I saw Manning starting for HOU? but didn't see him return any kicks or punts.

Thanks

Special teams coach Jerry Rosburg has named CB Lardarius Webb the Ravens' leading candidate to return punts this season.

Webb is running with the second-team defense in training camp, but he'll at least maintain a large role on special teams. The third-year player averaged 9.5 yards per punt return last season. David Reed will return kickoffs. Aug 17 - 2:57 PM

Broncos Player Profile: Cassius Vaughn

AUTHOR: Kim Constantinesco | IN: Broncos | COMMENTS: None Yet |

We constantly hear stories about Champ Bailey. He’s the Broncos Pro Bowl left cornerback. He’s a leader of the defense. He’s arguably the best shutdown corner in the league. But what about his backup, Cassius Vaughn?

It turns out that Vaughn will likely get much more playing time this year, and for very good reason. He’s a playmaker. The second-year corner played in 13 games last season, mostly on special teams. This year, however, Vaughn has made some big plays in camp. Interceptions, forced fumbles, and fumble recoveries have all been part of his repertoire. In preseason play, Vaughn had five tackles against the Cowboys. Against the Bills, he had 2 tackles and one pass deflection.

Because Bailey will slide into the nickel position on certain plays this season, Vaughn will slide into Bailey’s position at left corner. This will happen when an offense brings in a third wide receiver, which forces the Broncos to bring in a third cornerback to stop that slot receiver. When Bailey moves into that new position, the team will rely on Vaughn to bring Bailey-like consistency to left corner.

Vaughn came to the Broncos last year as an undrafted but eager rookie

The guy I am scoping is Josh Wilson. Plays across from a dangerous corner, on a defense that I expect to be on the field a lot. That's a sweet combo. The Skins have 35 WRs in camp, if Banks doesn't make the roster, and right now I hear it's a coin flip, Wilson might get the returner job. If so, you may be looking at top 5 corner numbers in return yardage leagues. :bowtie:

Notes: The return game likely will be in the hands of young talent. Safety Joe Lefeged is getting a long look on kickoff returns, while WR David Gilreath seems to have secured the punt-return chores. Each is an undrafted rookie. Lefeged’s ability to handle returns would be beneficial in finalizing the 53-player roster. While aiding special teams, he also seems capable of being a reliable backup on defense.

As a NYJ fan, it pains me to say this, but Jim Leonard seems to always be on Rex's defense and served as PR in the past. From last season, until he was hurt, I recall thinking this dude might have some value if he would just run back a damned punt rather than fair catching everything he touches.

I've not seen but 1 half of a NYJ game so far, but did see Leonard starting for Rex's defense. There weren't any punts where I saw him on the field. Anyone have more time watch the NYJ returner situation?

That would be money in the bank. Wilson was a top DB scorer in SEA with a part time defensive role and both KR/PR duties. If he gets a full time DB role and nabs either KR or PR duties, we could return to that level of production for just $1 investment in the last round.

per yahoo:

• When regular season begins, there’s a good chance FS Danieal Manning will return kicks like he did in Chicago. WR Jacoby Jones(notes) is the punt returner.

CB Patrick Peterson could be the replacement for Greg Toler at one cornerback spot. Or it could be Richard Marshall. Peterson is going to play a lot, however, and probably return punts.

http://aol.sportingnews.com/nfl/story/2011-08-29/arizona-cardinals-team-report-peterson-elevated-to-starter

there's a snippet from a manning interview here but I can't really decipher it.

hosts thought it confirmed the yahoo report above.

(rotoworld blurb)

Texans KR Trindon Holliday returned to practice Monday after missing all of the preseason with a hamstring injury.

Extremely brittle and undersized, Holliday entered camp as a long shot and confirmed he won't make the team by missing so much action. The Texans' punt returner this year will be Jacoby Jones. Danieal Manning will return kickoffs. Aug 29 - 6:31 PM

Has anyone put any thought into how the kick-off rule changes are going to affect these points?

I looked here before anywhere else... I've got to think more raw yardage comes from kick-offs, if these yards decrease, are we going to want to target punt returners more aggresively??

Yeah, I've thought about it, and our commish actually pimped up return values to offset a bit.

You really just have to make your best guess on how many yards kr lose, and maybe it becomes more of a game by game match up issue, where you need to get more familiar with the kickers, check weather, etc.

but the punter thing is definitely a valid point.

Yes. I mean, in a perfect world, I want a corner that does both, but I always targeted KO returners. Now, I think I value PR as much. just gonna be so many touchbacks.

Oh, Tedd Ginn you got me again. Demoted from KR? The highest drafted PR ever?

How safe would you say Kerley and Tate are at keeping the KR/PR combo going?

Excellent info here, thanks.

Will Patrick Peterson really be on the field most of the time? If so, his KR/PR stats could really bump him up...

I'd imagine they'd give tate every chance to keep the job, but I'm sure it's performance based, like anything else.I have no insight on the jets situation, but they just claimed gilyard, so that'd concern me a bit.

Special teams coach Mike Westoff indicated that kickoff return duties will be split between WR Jeremy Kerley, RB Joe McKnight, and CB Antonio Cromartie.

We assume Kerley will see the majority of returns, though Westhoff expects at least 35-40 percent touchbacks until the weather turns colder. Westhoff is hesitant to use Jim Leonhard on punt returns, so Kerley and possibly McKnight will handle those duties as well.

Coach Gary Kubiak confirmed that FS Danieal Manning will be the Texans' primary kickoff returner this season.

Cornerback Sherrick McManis may also be worked in on kickoffs if Manning needs a breather. Manning has averaged an impressive 26.8 yards on 101 returns with the Bears over the past five years. Jacoby Jones will remain the primary punt returner.

Thoughts on Ladarius Webb? He has 7 tackles and 37 return yards at the half. Can he keep the tackle numbers up?

Now, with the staring role, it looks like Webb could have some value, but, for how long? I think I'll be dropping Josh Wilson for Webb this week

After Week 1, do the statistics bear out the fact there will be sufficiently fewer kick returns year over year that would neccisitate us looking solely at PRs now?

Webb racked up the tackles because the Steelers totally abandoned the running game once they got down. He will have some value going forward but don't expect 9-2-0.5 every week.

FYI, Jets used Jeremy Kerley on punt returns only in week 1. He muffed his first one, but they did stick with him. Antonio Cromartie (starting CB) did all the kick returns. Situation probably still fluid.

What's up in Tampa? Stroughter is hurt (had surgery on his foot). Will Spurlock resume KR/PR duties or does Preston Parker get a shot?

Rex said he will rotate with McKnight on KRs going forward.Regardless, his production as a CB is too low for most leagues anyways, even with KR yards added in.

I missed out on Webb in the WW this week I almost picked him up before Week 1 but went with Daniel Manning, and Patrick Peterson got picked up before week 1 one hour before I tried to get him.

In my league we start 2 IDPs, I have Arenas and Daniel Manning..Both are only returning kick-offs and neither are primary starters.

Should I abandon ship on the returners and just go with a LB, there's still plenty out there.

My point system is 1pt=solo tackle, .5=assisted tackle, 1pt=10 return yards.

Manning is a starter. Starting FS for Houston.

4 solos, 5 assists in 2 games seems about right to me. That's what happens to free safeties with 4 LBs in front of them. You gotta want him for his return yardage, the defensive stats are the bonus.

updated the above list a bit, including:

somebody asked what the strategy should be with kicks moved up 5 yds, and I think it'll just be very team and kicker specific, so you have to evaluate on a game by game basis.

some teams will still yield kr opps, and some won't.

so here is the week 3 round up

team kicks (touchbacks)

4+ kr afforded

dal 7 (-2)

min 7 (-2)

hou 8 (-4)

buf 6 (-2)

det 6 (-1)

oak 6 (-2)

sd 5 (-1)

min + buf have made this list all 3 weeks.

det made it wks 2 + 3, while dal made it wks 1 + 3.

teams facing 12+ kr through 3 weeks

buf 21-6 = 15

min 16-3 = 13

some teams might not get many tb's simply due to a low number of kicks, while their noodle legged kicker might provide many kr opps if only they could score some points in a soft match up --- here are a few notables.

sea -- 9 ko - 1 tb (wk2 shutout)

cle -- 14 ko - 4 tb

ari -- 12 ko - 4 tb

sd -- 14 ko - 5 tb

nyg -- 13 ko - 5 tb

atl -- 13 ko - 5 tb

all those teams have placed in the bottom half of the league in number of kicks, but if they were to find themselves in a game kicking off 6x, instead of 3 or 4, they would probably yield 4+ kr opps.

Colts placed SS Melvin Bullitt on injured reserve with a right shoulder injury, ending his season.

The Colts started David Caldwell at strong safety in Week 3, but he rotated with rookie Joe Lefeged. Lefeged played more snaps, and both players finished with two tackles.

edit: from profootballfocus

Spliting time at safety this week was undrafted free agent from 2010 David Caldwell and undrafted rookie Joe Lefeged, with Lefeged getting 47 snaps to Caldwell’s 25.

Lefeged could be gold if he gets regular pt on defense and continues to return kicks. Indy should be receiving a lot of kick offs this year.

Any thoughts from Indy fans?

I've just added Webb and dropped Patrick Patterson. Looks like he's still making enough tackles to have a good value and augmenting enough with return yards to make a difference each week.

Anyone foresee him retaining the starting role on defense long term?

Re: Webb.

The rookie Jimmy Smith, who they are quite high on, will get that job back when his ankle heals. It's a dreaded high ankle sprain, so who knows how long that will take. Last report is Week 6 after the bye. Of course, it remains to be seen if he supplants Webb or the other CB Cary Williams.

Also note, the Ravens used WR LaQuan Williams on KRs last week, not Webb. He was only used on punts. Rams only had 2 kickoffs (and a bunch of punts), so not sure if Webb won't get some work on KRs, but there's no guarantee.

Seems rash to cut Peterson for Webb. Ideally, you'd want both.

any more news on lefeged? Increased playing time? Still returning kicks? I'm not finding much discussion about him out there...Homers?

Joe McKnight is expected to handle kickoff returns this week with Antonio Cromartie playing through a rib/lung injury.

Asked if Cromartie could see time on returns, coach Rex Ryan replied, "There is no chance -- unless we really need him."
