Aldon Smith, too bad he isnt DE eligible on espn (1 Viewer)

He's helping me bigtime in my yahoo league. Using him as my DE since he is listed as LB/DE.

I needed a bye week filler and grabbed Smith over guys like Kiwaunuka, Erin Henderson, etc just because he had a few big games recently and because he was a rookie. Since it's dynasty I figured there might be a 10% chance of him sticking on my roster if he came up big. Well now he came up bigger than I could have hoped and I'll have to find another player to drop to fill in my byes for the next few weeks.

Jene, what were the pre-season scouting reports on this guy? Can we expect solid performance from this guy for the rest of the year or maybe next season and beyond?

I think Parys Haralson got injured and Aldon Smith will be a starter soon. Dude has 5.5 sacks and he isnt even a starter. He's going to be the defensive RoY if he becomes a starter IMO.

I thought he was the best pass rushing 3-4 OLB prospect after the draft settled the 'tweener landing spots. The first three weeks were a little inconsistent, but he's been very good over the past three weeks. The numbers are no fluke. He still needs improvement in coverage and defending the run, but I would expect that he'll be more than a situational player by opening weekend 2012.

Is he only a situational pass rusher right now. Based on his production in the last 3 weeks I thought he was playing every down. I am considering him in the same class as Clay Mathews and Von Miller right now.

What's the % of snaps that are going between Smith, Brooks, & Harylson? I should Brooks and Harylson still as the starters?

Brooks has been a starter. Smith has been rotating with Haralson. Smith had been averaging 41% of the snaps from weeks 1-5. In week 6, Haralson left the game with a hamstring injury with nine minutes left in the game. Smith wound up with 75% of the snaps that game. At this point, it's hard to tell if they'll plug Haralson back in, or use the injury as an excuse to increase Smith's snaps.

Big fat zero this week. :(
My choices were between him and Babin. If it weren't for one defended pass Babin would have had a goose egg too.I'm going to chalk it up to a bad week and HOLD.SF DEF is going to be stellar for the foreseeable future.

To this point Smith has been used mostly as a situational pass rusher. Despite the amazing production for a couple weeks, in the absence of him playing starter reps, one had to know there would be weeks like this mixed in.

agreed. would be curious to see just how many snaps he played last week.
29 out of 69 snaps in Week 9.

Thanks man. rough outing as I would have expected something on the stat sheet with 29 snaps played. With that said I think he still is a great hold. I think as the season progresses he'll get more PT.

I think he's definitely a great hold. His biggest problem is Parys Haralson, but Haralson isn't a long term threat. We should be looking at this like "wow, he has 7 sacks in limited playing time", rather than expecting him to keep doing it each week. :)

Not even close to being in the same class as Miller. He wasn't when you posted this and he clearly isn't now.

well this is never good.

San Francisco 49ers linebacker Aldon Smith has been charged with driving under the influence in Miami Beach.

Miami-Dade County jail records show Smith was booked Saturday morning and held on $1,000 bond. Jail records did not show whether Smith was represented by an attorney.

A Miami-Dade County Corrections spokeswoman said Smith was arrested by Miami Beach police. A police spokesman said he had no information immediately available about the arrest.

Smith was drafted as the seventh overall draft pick in 2011. During his first season, he had 14 sacks, a franchise record for a rookie linebacker. He also ranked 1st in the NFL in sacks among rookies.

The 49ers did not immediately respond to messages seeking comment.

Now that was a Stat line......5.5 sacks 2 forced fumbles. You got the feeling if they hadn't jumped out to such a huge lead, it could have been more. 48 points in our scoring, highest defensive total this year and 7th of any player.

Well, as a pure pass rusher, I have to say Aldon Smith is on about the same level as Von, though I still think Von's athleticism and ability to get to the QB in a number of ways gives him the edge. After all, it did take a monster game from Smith going against a college caliber offensive line to surpass Von in sacks, and I'd be surprised if Smith finished the season ahead of Von in sacks. But what makes Von so special is his desire to excel in all aspects of the game, and this puts him a notch or two above Smith as a pure football player. Consider that Von has 13 sacks and 25 tackles for loss. That means he has stopped the RB in the backfield a phenomenal 12 times so far, and he always seems to come up in big spots when the D desperately needs a stop. Smith, on the other hand has 15 sacks and just 16.5 tackles for loss. Smith is a pure sack specialist, albeit one of the top 5 sack specialists in the game right now. Miller is a complete football player. That said, the gap has certainly narrowed since i said it was not even close at around this time last season.

ftr: I think Aldon drops back in coverage way more then Von. I own both btw. It's actually one of the reasons I like Von better in IDP -- he gets more sack/tfl chances based upon the scheme.Although against the Bears he was unleashed and up field rushing all the time.
