***Official Post-Pujols St. Louis Cardinals Thread

157 posts in this topic

Pujols and LaRussa are gone. I really like the Matheny hire, but he is unproven. Dotel just signed with Detroit. I'm sure more change is coming!

The burning questions:

What do they spend their extra money they had budgeted for Pujols and LaRussa on?

Will Motte remain as closer?

Will the shredder come back?

How will Waino perform?

Who will backup Yadi?

Will Tyler Greene be the full-time SS, or will someone else take over?

How much do you think I can get for my sweatshop-purchased Pujols jersey on ebay? $5.00?!!

Is there any talk about going after Fielder?

I know there has been bad blood between Milwaukee and St. Louis, but I'm sure it's not anything irreconcilable.

I would love to see it, but, with Boras being his agent, and other holes to fill, I don't think they will.

Fielder will likely not be a Cardinal. Mozeilak went on local sports radio yesterday and basically confirmed that.

Biggest glaring need is a SS, but that market has dried up. Really don't want Hanley.

I really don't think they'll be signing a first baseman this off-season. They're probably comfortable sliding Berkman there for the short term.

I read where they are kicking the tires on Carlos Beltran. He actually makes quite a bit of sense on a 1 or 2 year deal. He'll handle RF right away as Craig recovers from injury, then will have a comfortable rotation where he definitely plays CF for Jay against lefties and is able to stay fresh and healthy. All depends on the asking price I guess, but if they can get him and Furcal to commit to short term deals, I think those are your two signings heading into the spring.

Supposedly the Cards are looking at Rollins....if that fails they can always resign Furcal

Looks like Raffy is coming back.

And I like the idea of Beltran coming to town. He's not Pujols, but he can still rake.

Good to see Furcal coming back as I don't believe in Tyler Greene yet. Beltran would be a great addition. Haven't heard how much and how many years yet, or if the Cards have contacted him.

Now we just have to hope Furcal can stay relatively healthy. Definitely helps up the middle. Can Descalso handle everyday 2B duties?

Might as well bight the bullet on Beltran and see if we can't get a lefty reliever while we are at. I wonder if there is still talk of alphabet becoming a starter?

Update:

Schumaker is back on a 2 year super utility role deal.

Theriot is non-tendered and a free agent.

J.C. Romero takes over the left specialist role in the bullpen.

Hopefully, there are larger additions to come.

I like all 3 of these moves. Hopefully we'll get news on a potential OF addition soon. I haven't heard anything connecting him to the Cards, but what about someone like Coco Crisp? Capable of playing CF, capable of leading-off, and I'd think he's obtainable at a reasonable price for a short-term deal.

cCI've heard they are interested in Beltran too. Would love to see him play RF until Craig comes back and then CF

Oh, most definitely. That would be Plan A, I'm just leery of the contract demands he may have. With the balky knees and the natural decline that is sure to kick in with a guy in his mid 30's, I'd hate see them commit more than 2-years there. That being said, his market seems to be shrinking. Looks like Colorado (pending Cuddyer) and Toronto (pending Fielder/Darvish) may be players. I think Boras initially thought Boston would be a player, but it sounds like they're not interested.

I read on the Post-Dispatch site that they are still interested in Beltran, and have talked to the agent for Coco. They really want someone that can hit from the right side, and play CF & RF. Just pony up and sign Beltran already!

Dave Duncan stepping down to spend time with his ill wife. He's had a long and successful career helping a wide variety of arms.

There's never been a coach elected to the HoF and there probably never will be. But coaches are some of the most unsung contributors to the game. There should be some way to honor guys like Duncan who've spent decades coming in early and leaving late.

He's got a chance, especially with a lot of the big hitters being shunned

His only chance for induction into the full Hall would be via one of the veteran's committees. These bodies have gotten increasingly conservative over the years. I can't imagine them setting a precedent.Olney's blog suggested an award like the Spink and Frick votes. Some baseball lifer like Duncan gets to go to Cooperstown and make a speech, his name goes on a plaque and the sanctity of the real Hall isn't diminished. Everybody's happy.

Rumor has it they are in the running for Oswalt, but the team is denying it. I'm not sure where they would put him unless they have found a taker for Lohse or Westbrook.

Still surprised they did not take a run at Prince. The Cards already offered Albert 225, and probably could have signed Prince for around 200 last month when things were quiet. Fielder would pretty much match the production, be younger and less money.

I think the Cardinals did place a value on Pujols' legacy, IMO. But yeah, I thought the Cards should have made a run at Prince.

To be honest, its not in the Cardinals' organizational game-plan to hand out 9-10 year commitments. They were horribly uncomfortable making an exception to that rule for Pujols, so I'm not sure why anyone would be surprised that they were not interested in offering it to a guy that has no ties to the organization and has a legitimate weight concern. I'm quite pleased with the route they have taken since the whole Pujols thing fell the wrong way. Beltran and Furcal at 2-year commitments should give them a good return at minimal risk. They may have overpaid slightly, but the luxury of having no 3rd year on those contracts is probably worth it. If the rumors about Oswalt are true, that gives them six legitimate rotation arms to bring to camp and see what happens. The Cards are in a position to be very flexible in the upcoming seasons. The only long-term contract on the books is Matt Holliday. They will be able to pick and choose where they spend their money, whether that be fat extensions for Molina and Wainwright, or maybe a run at a guy like Joey Votto or someone similar.

They have done really well this offseason. I'm just glad that the Pujols negotiations didn't drag out as long as Fielder's did. They may not have ended up with Furcal and Beltran.

Good news. The Post Dispatch writers on Twitter are all saying that a deal with Molina is progressing. They think it will be done by Friday.

Rosenthal is reporting 5 years in the neighborhood of 70-75 mil.A lot of change for a catcher who's not young.Edit: That said, in a lot of ways, he is/was more beloved in STL than Pujols. I may get some flack for this, but Yadi to St. Louis is similar to what Thurman Munson was to the Yankees. Edited by Brady Marino

Great game last night! Lohse threw a gem, and Beltran looked good hitting 2nd. I liked that they were more aggressive on the bases as well.

Congrats to Matheny on his first W!

These two were key. Furcal didn't embarrass himself, and then once you get through him, it's right to the meat. Love it. And I did notice that they were running a lot more, something that TLR didn't really emphasize.Team looked real good.

5-1 in their 1st 6 games, all on the road. Starting pitching has been phenomenal! Offense has been great and the bullpen really good. I really like this team!

Wow, and to think we have Shelby Miller waiting in the wings for next year if Matheny can manage this banged up rotation. I was hoping to be .500 coming off of the opening road trip so this is a pleasant surprise. Matheny is a sharp guy and doesn't bring with him the quirks we had with TLR. Nice transition.

He is doing a great job. I was a little worried about the rookies on the bench, but they have all contributed so far, especially Carpenter. It looks like 2012 is going to be a good year!

Allen Craig looking like he's coming back next week. Had 11 hr's in just 200ab's last year, and is mashing in his first 2 re-hab games. Where does he fit into this team? Will he play everyday?

I don't think he will play everyday, but he will get a lot of starts. They can take turns resting Beltran, Holliday, and Berkman. He will be a nice bat off the bench too.
