Brock Osweiler (2 Viewers)

This rotoworld spin that CLE just HAD TO cut Osweiler always seemed stupid to me.

He really can't be a backup QB in CLE? Really? Here is a list of their last 27 STARTING quarterbacks and Osweiler isn't good enough to even be a backup? Idiotic.

2016Robert Griffin III (5) / Josh McCown (3) / Cody Kessler (8)

2015Josh McCown (8) / Johnny Manziel (6) / Austin Davis (2)

2000Doug Pederson (8) / Tim Couch (7) / Spergon Wynn (1)

1999Tim Couch (14) / Ty Detmer (2)
In 18 years:

Derek Anderson in 2007 had the single 'decent' year (although McCown for 8 games in 2015 was pretty good with 12 TD/4 INT).

4 seasons of 3000 yards by any one player.

4 seasons of 15 or more TDs.

2 years ago, Josh McCown suffered a concussion on the opening drive of the season.

Last year they were on their 3rd string QB by Week 3.

That has nothing to do with this year but yes, it's entirely possible he plays and he plays a lot.

Speaking on the Dan Patrick Show, ESPN's Adam Schefter said the Browns were "not interested" in trading Brock Osweiler to the Dolphins.

It does not sound like the Dolphins ever officially made an offer -- Schefter said Miami was focused on Jay Cutler the entire time -- but Cleveland's lack of interest in moving Osweiler is notable, especially after they named him the starter for the first preseason game. It remains possible the Browns are just trying to drive up the price on a future trade, but Osweiler opening the season as Cleveland's starter is a possibility which has to be taken seriously.

Browns QB Brock Osweiler completed 6-of-14 passes for 42 yards with no touchdowns or interceptions in Thursday’s preseason opener.

Osweiler played in to the second quarter and began the game with three consecutive three and outs against a Saints defense missing several starters before leading the Browns on a 74-yard drive that ended in a turnover on downs. Whether the Browns were starting Osweiler in the hopes of creating a trade market for him or were attempting to motivate either of their young quarterbacks behind him on the depth chart remains to be seen, but it’s hard to envision Osweiler being a serious long-term answer for the Browns.

I believe by the end of preseason that the Browns may be successful in increasing Osweiler's trade value.

Instead of having to give a 2nd and 6th to get someone else to take him, maybe they'll only have to give a 3rd and 6th to get someone else to take him.

ESPN's Adam Schefter reports Brock Osweiler is not expected to play in the Browns' third preseason game.

Schefter's colleague at ESPN, Field Yates wonders if the Browns are holding Osweiler out in hopes to trade him. It makes sense. Coach Hue Jackson named rookie DeShone Kizer the starter earlier Wednesday, and Cleveland has Cody Kessler as a capable No. 2. Osweiler has been brutal this preseason, completing 12-of-22 passes (54.5 percent) for 67 yards (3.05 YPA) and a 0:1 TD:INT ratio with massive accuracy issues. It'll be tough to find someone to take on his $16 million salary. The Browns may be comfortable outright cutting Osweiler.

Starting Osweiler was a transparently obvious attempt to generate trade value for him, but for the ploy to work, Osweiler had to look respectable. As opposed to terrible.

I wouldn't be surprised if they just kept him on the roster, as I've consistently pointed out, they will have to pay him $16m this year regardless of whether he is on the roster or not, so they might as well keep him on the roster. At the very worst he can start a few games after the other two have got hurt/been benched.

the Browns went to their #3 QB in week 3 last year, so yeah, he'll probably stay on the roster.

unless they really need another roster spot.

The only reason to keep Brock is if they really do want to tank this season to get good draft position next year. Captain Checkdown was 23rd in yards per attempt with Denver in 2015, was 30th in yards per attempt last year with Houston, and is averaging an unbelievably low 3.0 yards per attempt in the preseason this year. He is absolutely horrible.

PFF's take on Oswieler last year was that he was absolutely awful. When looking at QB's with a clean pocket and NO pressure, he had a passer rating of 83.1, there were 5 QB's that had better overall ratings than that. When he was pressured, Osweiler’s passer rating plummeted to 47.3 and he completed under 50 percent of his passes, throwing four times as many interceptions as touchdowns. Only Goff and Gabbert had lower ratings on the year when facing pressure.

9News' Mike Klis reports the Broncos are expected to have interest in free agent Brock Osweiler.

The Broncos are the first team linked to Osweiler since his Cleveland release. Osweiler had the best season of his career filling in for Peyton Manning in 2015, but has struggled outside of Denver. The Broncos need a backup quarterback with Paxton Lynch (shoulder) expected to miss 2-4 games. Osweiler's contract contains offset language, so he figures to sign for the veteran minimum.

Man, how do you think the rest of the Browns must feel, knowing that their team wasted $16 million just to reach the salary floor.

"Hey, why didn't you spend some of that money on me??"

Big helping of humble pie for Brock if that happens.

He was pretty much badmouthing Elway for handling his contract as he was headed out the door to Houston.

#Broncos and QB Brock Osweiler didn't burn bridges, despite the awkward ending.

That's going to be a good thing soon:

Osweiler was a class act despite the awkward ending.

There was another party in that whole deal that said he didn't want anyone on his team that didn't want to be there. And then he signed Osweiler as soon as he was a FA. Hmmmmmm.

Broncos officially re-signed Brock Osweiler

Pass rusher Shane Ray goes to IR to make room.

Brock a Bronco.

Is he just keeping the seat warm for Lynch's return, or can he stick for the full 16?
Well, since the Broncos are signing him before Week 1, his salary will be guaranteed for the entire season. So there's little incentive to cut him when Lynch returns, unless they have a pressing need at another position.

$800k isn't going to change that decision, and he's probably one of the cheapest options to cut.  And his salary isn't absolutely guaranteed, he has to exercise the option for it to be.  And there's a catch - only Vested Veterans (Brock is) can exercise that option, and they can only do it once.  So he's probably not going to do it for $800k when he already has $16M coming, he'll probably hold onto the option in case he signs a bigger deal in the future.

IIRC, Browns have to cover his full salary either way so no point for him to exercise that option since the $16M he is getting for the year is already guaranteed. The Bronco's salary is just offseting the money the Browns owe him.

Radio guys here in Denver are hilarious talking about how picking up Brock was a good move and that Brock could even push Siemian. LOL, did they not see him play last year or in the preseason? Adding a veteran presence behind Siemian until Lynch is healthy again is a good move. However, Brock is horrible, and they aren't running the same offense anymore that he did okay with under Kubiak.

I'm hearing radio couch it as more of a push at Paxton. This offense should be a decent one for Brock to grasp. His performance in Houston was bad - but that Houston Oline is so horrific it was going to be hard for him to look great.  This Oline might be a bit better and hopefully they can rehab him. My question is how do they give him the shot at the rehab - it is likely to be a difficult situation either an injury to Trevor or bad play which is bad news for Bronco fans like myself. The motivation to resurrect his career may get the best out of Brock so it's decent insurance. From the stories being relayed by the radio today - most everyone in the Bronco locker room on both sides of the ball are saying it's a good deal, they remember his effort to get them to the Super Bowl.

FWIW, PFF ranked the Texans line 18th overall after last year, Bronco's were 24th. I was listening to the early morning folks on my way in to work this morning, maybe more logically thinking heads are on now but the ones this morning were pretty  . Also funny Brock is back considering all the vitriol thrown at him last year when he left for the money.

Are we sure Lynch is any better? He pretty much got boat-raced by Trevor Siemian.

How many months ago was elway ####-hurt because Osweiler wouldn't accept his $15mil/season offer?

When he left for the money, I didn't get the feeling that the Broncos wanted him gone, they just didn't want to pay that much money for him.  He had the height, but was pretty unfinished for  starting QB, more of a project?  Maybe they still think he has potential and it may click for him.

Announced today that he is the starter for the Bronco's against the Eagles. What a whirlwind the last 2 years for this guy.

He can't be worse than Trevor has been playing, right?

Trevor seemed to favor Sanders, so as a DT owner do we know who Brock favored when he played for them a few years back?
