Tomlin: Keisel, Hampton and Starks candidates for surgery

Monday, January 09, 2012

Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

Steelers coach Mike Tomlin said today at his season-ending news conference that nose tackle Casey Hampton and offensive tackle Max Starks have ACL injuries and defensive lineman Brett Keisel has a severe groin injury. All three are being evaluated today by team doctors and are potential candidates for surgery.

Tomlin also said surgery is a possibility for Pro Bowl center Maurkice Pouncey, who did not play in the final game of the season for the second year in a row because of a high ankle sprain.

Tomlin also provided some more insight into the defensive concept on the final play of the game -- an 80-yard pass from Tim Tebow to Demaryius Thomas for the game-winning touchdown on the first play of the overtime period.

Tomlin said it was an inverted zone coverage where the safeties were close to the line of scrimmage for run support. He declined to say what safety Ryan Mundy's responsibilities were on the play.

Tomlin said it is not out of the ordinary for the Steelers to employ such a defense in that situation. He said they have done it many times when facing run-oriented quarterbacks.

Tomlin also said that he would "probably" attack the Denver offense in the same way if he had to do it over again. He explained that defending Tebow and the potential of his running limits what a defense can do in a planned scheme.

Tomlin was asked if he expected offensive coordinator Bruce Arians and defensive coordinator **** LeBeau back next season.

He acknowledged the possibility for change, but said "we're going to work to maintain continuity as we always do."

Could save another couple mill by cutting Mendenhall.Anyone remember how good Baron Batch looked before he got hurt? Between Redman, Batch, Dwyer and Clay, they really don't need Mendenhall.I also think Kemoeatu might get added to your list. No way he is worth $5.3 million.

 Mendenhall is the team's best RB still, although Redman like the 1b to Mendy's 1a

Cutting Mendy (813 CAR 3367 YDS 29 TDs) for Dwyer, Batch and Clay (who have combined for a total of 35 CAR, 202 yds, 1 TD) is beyond lunacy

Absolutely. I completely missed Kemoeatu. He is definitely gone so now we're saving $30 million in cap space

I don't think they'll cut Mendenhall either.

I think they need to visit FA this year. Who was the last big pickup they had? Farrior? That was like back in 1929. They need to get some good OL with NFL experience (NFL ready), and maybe draft a couple young one's to sit a year or two.

They got him on the cheap, and assuming he comes back 100%, he will hopefully be going all superbeast in his contract year. Then you franchise him, then see ya laterz.

Thinking about the "O" line and Big Ben. If he does ever get some reliable blockers in front of him, would we really want to see him become a pocket passer, seeing how well he can improvise and play outside the pocket? We have seen the past few games when he was kind of forced to be a pocket passer due to his ankle, and color me unimpressed. Maybe he had trouble throwing because he couldn't plant his foot well. I'm not sure, but it seems like the offense moves better when he is running for his life.

Thats not the "Steeler way"Last "best" FA signing IIRC was Ryan Clark.

We ALL know thats not the Steeler way, but it could benefit them, especially if they get all this cap space with some vets possibly retiring.

Ben, like other elite QB's in the game, can pick apart a defense when given time.Ben's escapability is very good, but opens him up to getting drilled (happened in the Browns game when he injured his ankle)

Not disagreeing with you, just saying that they'll never do it unless the price is right.

2012 Cap Numbers (players currently under contract for 2012, as of 9/7/2011):

6. NT Casey Hampton ($8.1 mil) - Replace ASAP

10. Chris Kemoeatu ($5.3 mil) - Restructure or cut.

11. WR Hines Ward ($4.6 mil) - Restructure or see ya (sorry to say, as one of my all-time favorite Steelers).

14. LB James Farrior ($3.8 mil) - Replace ASAP

21. K Shaun Suisham ($1.7 mil) - Are mediocre kickers really getting paid this much now?

Being a pocket passer while your pocket is constantly collapsing certainly has it's challenges. My suggestion is to see how he could play when he actually has a pocket.

What good OLineman are free agents anyways? I honestly have no idea.I have to admit there are times I've been frustrated with the lack of pulse-quickening free agents signed by the Steelers but in general I think it is a sign of a successful, stable, non-desperate organization. I trust the "Steeler way".The Flozell Adams and Cotchery signings were great but they were hardly splashy. And they were cheap. I would expect and hope for more of the same.
Quick search turned up these names:
Demetrius Bell (BUF) - OT - Bell is another under-the-radar player capable of protecting the blindside and is a vital piece to the Bills' offense with an expiring contract. Though he's an above average pass protector, he's an even better run blocker for the left side. The Bills have some work to be done to keep all of the pieces together, which could allow Bell to slip through the cracks into free agency.Carl Nicks (NO) - OG - Nicks is one of the premier guards in the league and after watching Jahri Evans strike a rich deal not too long ago, the Saints may be hard pressed to offer a second guard that type of money, though Nicks arguably had a better season a year ago. If Nicks doesn't put a hometown discount on the table, there's a good chance the market shows him more love than the Saints can afford to show him.Ben Grubbs (BAL) - OG - Grubbs has been one of the top offensive linemen on one of the better units in the league over the past few years. Despite having some moving pieces next to him at left tackle, Grubbs has continued to excel. The team's run game is at its best with him blocking on the move. With some instability along the offensive line over the past few years, it wouldn't be surprising to see the Ravens address Grubbs' contract immediately.

21. K Shaun Suisham ($1.7 mil)

22. S Will Allen ($1.6 mil)
These seem like the most obvious cuts to me, and would total $40.7 mill. How much over the cap are they projected to be for 2012? I thought the number I heard early in the year was a little over $25 mill? If thats the case, Id say keep Harrison for 1 more year as theyll still $7 mill in space left with the other cuts. Bring Farrior, Ward, and Suisham back only if theyll sign for less than $1 mill or we cant find a better kicker.

I think youre right with Clark. Im not sure if Id even heard of him before we signed him, and he was probably a top 3 player on our defense this year. Id love for them to bring in another under the radar name/player that could start for us and have an impact next year at ILB, NT, or OL.

Indeed, cutting a 1st rd talent for a 6th rder, 7th rder, and a UDFA I dont think is a good football decision.

2012 Cap Numbers (players currently under contract for 2012, as of 9/7/2011):

5. LB James Harrison ($9 mil)

9. T Willie Colon ($5.7 mil)

10. Chris Kemoeatu ($5.3 mil)

11. WR Hines Ward ($4.6 mil)

14. LB James Farrior ($3.8 mil)

15. LB Larry Foote ($3.6 mil)

16. T Jonathan Scott ($2.7 mil)

17. CB Bryant McFadden ($2.7 mil)

It is projected that the cap will be around 123 mil, so they are around 20 mil over.

I think they need to visit FA this year. Who was the last big pickup they had? Farrior? That was like back in 1929. They need to get some good OL with NFL experience (NFL ready), and maybe draft a couple young one's to sit a year or two.
Thats not the "Steeler way"Last "best" FA signing IIRC was Ryan Clark.
I think youre right with Clark. Im not sure if Id even heard of him before we signed him, and he was probably a top 3 player on our defense this year. Id love for them to bring in another under the radar name/player that could start for us and have an impact next year at ILB, NT, or OL.
Would love to see them bring in a big, hulking DL-man that can play NT to either replace/split time with big snack. I am encouraged by Steve McClendon's play though, as he has been solid in relief of Big Hamp.ETA: I thought Heyward had his finest game yesterday as well, his FF of McGahee was a thing of beauty and made a couple of tackles using one arm and pulling a guy backward.

Why do people want to bring Farrior and Ward back?
Why not for like $750k?? Unless they bring in a solid ILB or draft one in the top 4-5 rounds, Timmons and Sylvester arent enough to roster at ILB and they should cut Foote at his apparent $3.6 mill salary.

UFA: I say bring all these guys back. Maybe not Essex depending on draft FA, maybe Dixon over Batch

Ok, so if they kept Harrison that means they would still have around $12 mill in cap space (assuming they cut all the guys I listed). That would seem to be enough to sign their draft class and sign a couple FA's at $2-3 mill per year, right?.I wouldnt mind cutting Harrison if they had more depth at OLB, but they have nada after Worilds besides Carter (do we really want this guy playing every down if Woodley or Worilds gets hurt?) or moving Timmons back outside with is counterproductive as they have even less depth at ILB.

I think McLendon is a good backup, and maybe its just because he's smaller than Snack, but he looks small for a NT to me.Heyward did have a solid game. Funny, because my mom called him a "lollygagger" a few times during the game and I just chuckled. Early in the game she said why does Cotchery drop the ball all the time, so considering the source...

I'd to see Stevenson Sylvester play a bigger role next year (I believe he is a ILB).He's been masterful on ST, and in the handful of Preseason games I saw him in he's been quite excellent (granted the competition isnt as good)

I wanted take a moment to thank all of Steeler Nation for the love and support. I'm sorry for the disappointing loss. I'm still depressed about it. We had a great year finishing 12-4 but our ultimate goal was to win the Super Bowl and we fell short. Hats off to Denver. I'm also getting lots of questions about retirement so let me set the record straight: I have no plans on retiring right now. I want to win another Superbowl. I don't know where the media is getting this info from but rest assured that when I decide to retire, you'll hear it from ME first. - HINES

I wouldnt mind Sylvester starting next year either, but if they cut Farrior and Foote (I would think highly likely for both), they only have Timmons left so theyll need to acquire a couple more ILBs one way or another.

Yeah, lets keep drafting good pass blocking OL, that way once they are ready to play, Ben will have retired and we'll have a rookie QB in there that can't throw anyways.

They need OL that can play NOW.

This is a joke right?Cut these guys and here is a $25.5 million savings for you:

6. NT Casey Hampton ($8.1 mil)

11. WR Hines Ward ($4.6 mil)

14. LB James Farrior ($3.8 mil)

15. LB Larry Foote ($3.6 mil)

16. T Jonathan Scott ($2.7 mil)

17. CB Bryant McFadden ($2.7 mil)
Could save another couple mill by cutting Mendenhall.Anyone remember how good Baron Batch looked before he got hurt? Between Redman, Batch, Dwyer and Clay, they really don't need Mendenhall.

I also think Kemoeatu might get added to your list.

The Mendenhall hate is strong with CrossEyed
Indeed, cutting a 1st rd talent for a 6th rder, 7th rder, and a UDFA I dont think is a good football decision.
Never understood what a guy's draft position has to do with the decision to keep him once he's entering his 5th season. There have been plenty of early round busts and late round/undrafted HOFers.

I guess the Steelers should have kept Alonzo Jackson since he was drafted in the 2nd round and James Harrison wasn't drafted at all.

I sure hope they don't cut Harrison. Coming off back surgery and later a broken orbital bone the guy had 9 sacks in 11 games. He didn't have his best game yesterday but the entire D would be released if we're basing it on that game.

I agree with this although Harrison is one hit away from a 4-game suspension and probably only a couple hits away from a year-long suspension. This is something that needs to be considered when evaluating whether or not he is worth his cap value.

Are you intimating that those RB's are better (excluding Redman) than Rashard Mendenhall? I'd like to hear your reasoning on this.

Read in the Trib today that if Steelers cut Harrison, he would still count for $4 MIL of $8MIL on next season's tab.Translation: Not going to get cut.

I'm not, but in a cap league you have to weigh the cost/benefit. I think that Redman is every bit Mendenhall's equal. Not the exact same skill set, but what Redman does better than Mendenhall more than makes up for the only advantage Mendenhall has, which is speed. So Redman becomes their starter. Behind him you have what appears to be three capable backups. I wouldn't necessarily trust one of them to carry the load, but I think as a unit they are more than capable, especially since the Steelers are no longer a run first team. Take Mendenhall's $2.1 million and add it to some other money you have available to shore up the OL, or replace one of their aging LBs or DLs.

Rashard Mendenhall 2012 Salary: $2.1 MIL

Roster Spots Taken: 1

Clay/Dwyer/Batch 2012 Combined Salary: ~$1.5 MIL

Roster Spots Taken: 3

Is it worth $600K to get rid of a proven starter in Mendenhall for 3 unproven "back up" RB's eat up a 2 additional roster spots?

He may not be pursued when he becomes a FA but Mendenhall is not going to get cut in 2012.

:goodposting: Agreed, nor should he be at that point too because he'll be another year older (which is about 5 yrs in RB years) and much more expensive out on the open market. At that point, Steelers can draft a high pedigree RB in the 2013 or 2014 draft as Redman handles the main duties. But as for right now, when Mendy is signed for a more-than-reasonable price for a starting RB, it'd be pointless to release him (and still probably have to pay him some $$$ as well).I'd rather have a Mendy/Redman combo, than Redman and a cast of lesser RBsI expect the Steelers to obviously retain Mendy/Redman/Dwyer/Batch and release Spann/Clay (total savings of around $900 K)
