2012 offseason blurbgasm (1 Viewer)

Giants S Antrel Rolle will cover slot receivers while Terrell Thomas (knee) is out.

Thomas was slated to start opposite Corey Webster on the outside and then kick inside against three-wide sets. That plan is scrapped now that the Giants will have to turn to Prince Amukamara as a starting corner. Rolle covered slot receivers for the majority of last season

OXNARD, Calif. — It's all starting to slow down for Barry Church.

Deprived by the lockout of a chance last offseason to fully grasp defensive coordinator Rob Ryan's complicated scheme, Church wasn't ready to challenge for a starting job in 2011. But nearly a week into training camp, the third-year pro is the front-runner to land the strong safety job after using the spring and summer to master the playbook.

“The defense is starting to be a lot simpler, a lot easier,” said Church, who has intercepted Tony Romo twice in practice.

“I'm hitting my stride. The (offseason practices) helped me a lot. Without them last year with the new system, it was hard. But it's becoming second nature now.”

Abe Elam struggled at strong safety last season, so the Cowboys let him drift into free agency before signing seven-year veteran Brodney Pool to a one-year deal.

Only one problem: Pool failed his physical conditioning test Sunday. After finally passing it, he practiced for the first time Friday, running second team behind Church.

According to the Cleveland Plain Dealer, the Browns "fear" WLB Chris Gocong has suffered a ruptured right Achilles' tendon.

Browns WLB Chris Gocong has been diagnosed with a ruptured right Achilles' tendon, and is done for the season.

what are the chances DQ moves to wlb and they put the rookie in the middle?

Confirmation:

My link BREAKING: Cleveland Browns LB Chris Gocong suffers possible season-ending right Achilles injury, will undergo MRI

Published: Saturday, August 04, 2012, 10:21 AM Updated: Saturday, August 04, 2012, 11:31 AM

BEREA -- Browns linebacker Chris Gocong suffered what appeared to be a ruptured right Achilles in practice this morning and is likely lost for the season.

Gocong will undergo an MRI today, but judging from the way Gocong grabbed the back of his leg -- the all-too-familiar "Achilles grab'' -- an Achilles is what is feared by Gocong and the team, sources said.

"It would be a huge hit,'' said linebacker D'Qwell Jackson. "Chris is a great player.''

... Gocong, the Browns' starting weakside linebacker -- and starting strongside for the first three games in the possible absence of Scott Fujita -- was helped onto the cart by trainers and couldn't put any weight on the right leg...
No word yet on who takes on the SSLB spot.If D'Qwell makes the move it will only be for Fujita's suspension (the first three games).

The rook, James Michael Johnson, has looked good but the other rookie LB Emmanuel Acho (bro of Texans LB/DE Sam Acho) has also looked 'good' but hasn't flashed as much as JMJ.

No word yet on how the team might shuffle players but its is now possible that D'Qwell 'could' be moved outside with JMH taking over in the middle or even that JMH could be part of a rotation with Acho on the strong side, I can't say right now and haven't seen anything yet.

EDIT: Just saw this from YESTERDAY'S practice>>>

My link

... ... James-Michael Johnson played some weakside linebacker with the first-team defense, as the team prepares to play the first few games with Chris Gocong at strongside linebacker over Scott Fujita. ...
Fujita played on the strong side not on the weakside but reports of JMJ getting first team reps on the weakside shows the plan was to move Gocong to the strong side with D'Qwell in the middle and Kaluka Mauivau and 'possibly' JMH on the weakside but the blurb that JMH was getting first team reps outside 'probably' means they would be more willing to move him to the Strong side but that is just my speculation. This is the first report I've seen of James Michael Johnson getting first team reps and where the coaching staff was experimenting with him on the outside.

The Bills' official depth chart lists Justin Rogers as the team's primary kick returner.

It's a surprise in that most expected Brad Smith to be listed in the initial release. Rogers averaged 28.7 yards per return as a late season fill-in. In addition to special teams, he's competing with Leodis McKelvin for the Bills' starting nickel corner job.

paul kruger's on sirius - nfl radio and he says he's gonna replace jarrett johnson on 1st and 2nd downs on the strong side, while reverting to his old role on 3rd down, while upshaw takes suggs' spot.

he's says kindle is working at the suggs position and looks great -- he speculated maybe he could come in on 3rd downs.
Ravens LB Paul Kruger has been a "standout performer" in the early stages of training camp.Kruger is replacing Terrell Suggs as the first-team "rush" linebacker, and is a popular breakout candidate after spending his first three years as a reserve. This will be the first season of Kruger's career as an every-down player. He averaged about 20 snaps a game in 2011, recording 15 tackles and 5.5 sacks.

Lions FS Louis Delmas underwent left knee surgery Tuesday.

Dr. James Andrews performed the procedure. The only good news for Delmas is that this is not the same knee that kept him out of the final five regular season games last season.

In addition to a knee sprain, Packers ILB Desmond Bishop also suffered a potential hamstring injury in Thursday's preseason opener.

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports Patriots LB Dane Fletcher sustained a torn left ACL in Thursday's preseason opener.

Bears SS Major Wright exited Thursday's preseason opener with a hamstring injury.

Falcons MLB Akeem Dent left Thursday's preseason opener with a concussion.

Bengals MLB Rey Maualuga and DE Carlos Dunlap were forced from Friday's preseason opener with right knee injuries.

Aaron Ross is practicing as the Jaguars' starting left cornerback in base packages, and kicking to the slot in the nickel defense.

Rashean Mathis replaces Ross at LCB in the nickel. Derek Cox is entrenched as the right cornerback.

Bengals S Taylor Mays suffered a "possible concussion" in Friday's preseason opener.

Jets S Eric Smith left Friday's preseason opener with a left knee injury.

Playing on the Jets' punt team, Smith's knee twisted in ugly fashion in the second quarter, but he did limp off the field under his own power. Per ESPN New York's Rich Cimini, his knee was "heavily wrapped" on the sideline.

Bengals MLB Rey Maualuga (knee) is expected to miss only a "couple of days" of practice."I got good news from the trainer," Maualuga said after Friday's preseason opener. "Tomorrow we've got off and I could be back Sunday for practice."

Eagles RCB Nnamdi Asomugha was carted off the field Monday following a thundering collision with S Nate Allen.

Asomugha remained down for nearly five minutes before finally rising to his feet. He reportedly didn't move his legs for "quite a while." The Philadelphia Inquirer & Daily News' Les Bowen believes Asomugha likely suffered a concussion.

Colts MLB Pat Angerer suffered a broken foot in Sunday's preseason opener, and will be sidelined a minimum of six weeks.

The injury requires surgery. It's a huge blow for a run defense that ranked 29th in the league last season, as Angerer could miss upwards of 3-4 games. Angerer was fourth in the NFL with 148 tackles in 2011. He was expected to be the linchpin in new coach Chuck Pagano's 3-4 scheme. According to Pagano, Moise Fokou, Greg Lloyd, Jerrell Freeman and Mario Harvey will all compete for Angerer's spot, but the Colts will explore the free agent market.

OLB Aldon Smith (hip) might be held out of the rest of the 49ers' exhibition games.

The right hip bruise Smith sustained on Friday night isn't serious, but he'll sit out at least a week of practice

Vikings DE Everson Griffen will report to camp as a linebacker, and could be in for a permanent position switch depending on how he performs in the preseason.

The Vikings decided to make the switch on the final day of minicamp. Buried on the depth chart behind workhorses Jared Allen and Brian Robison at end, Griffen was productive as a pass-rusher in limited snaps as a linebacker last season.
The Vikings have shifted LB Everson Griffen back to defensive end."We saw enough of him at linebacker where we feel like this is going to be better for him,"

Broncos DL Jason Hunter will be out at least two months after tearing his triceps Tuesday.

Hunter appeared to sustain the injury while hitting a blocking sled in practice. A 14-game starter over the last two years, he had been promoted to the first-string ahead of Robert Ayers at the beginning of camp.

Titans LE Derrick Morgan continues to split first-team reps with Pannel Egboh.

Steelers OLB James Harrison underwent arthroscopic surgery on his troublesome knee Wednesday morning. He's going to miss regular season action, and may even open the year on PUP, which would cost Harrison the first six games. In Harrison's four missed games in 2011, the Steelers went 4-0 and allowed just 16.75 points per game, though the Jaguars, Cardinals, and Titans were three of their opponents and that's not necessarily a predictive stat. Look for Chris Carter and Jason Worilds to share snaps across from LaMarr Woodley while Harrison is out. Harrison is 34 and the knee has been an ongoing issue, so it's shaping up as a long-term concern.

hasn't he been out with his wrist? he had surgery in june, i think. i want to say he hasn't been in training camp and/or played in preseason yet.

Broncos WLB D.J. Williams was found guilty of driving while ability-impaired and driving without headlights, stemming from a November, 2010 DUI arrest.

Coach Leslie Frazier confirms the Vikings are counting on rookie FS Harrison Smith to be a starter.

Smith made his first start in Friday's win over the Bills. "We're counting on that. That's one of the reasons we drafted him when we did," Frazier said. "I haven't seen anything, without looking at the tape, that would upset that."

and if you're looking at match ups for your de, big bad levi brown is down.

but, you probably already had this week circled.

Saints MLB Curtis Lofton will miss the remainder of preseason with a high ankle sprain.

Saints WLB David Hawthorne has undergone meniscus surgery, and is uncertain for Week 1.

Interim coach Joe Vitt also revealed that MLB Curtis Lofton is dealing with a high-ankle sprain. Hawthorne tore his meniscus in Friday's preseason tilt with the Jaguars, but initially stayed in the game.

Saints OLB Chris Chamberlain tore his left ACL in Friday's preseason loss to the Jaguars, and is done for the season.

Chamberlain was in the mix to start at strong-side linebacker.

Chiefs LCB Brandon Flowers was sporting a walking boot on his injured left heel at Monday's practice.

Flowers has missed nearly three weeks of practice

Coach Mike Shanahan confirmed Monday that OLB Brian Orakpo (shoulder) has avoided serious injury, but said he won't suit up for Washington's final two preseason games.

Nor will Brandon Meriweather (knee). Both players are expected to be at or near 100 percent for Week 1

NFL suspended Chiefs OLB Tamba Hali one game for violating the league's substance abuse policy.

Keenan Lewis is expected to win the Steelers' left cornerback job.

Lewis has reportedly had a "strong camp" and "impressed coaches" with his knowledge of the scheme. He'll start the season ahead of Cortez Allen, who slides in as the nickel back behind RCB Ike Taylor and Lewis.

Fourth-round pick Miles Burris has worked as the Raiders' starting weak-side linebacker throughout training camp.

He had four tackles in Oakland's first two preseason games. Usual WLB Aaron Curry is suddenly on the bubble due to recurring knee woes, leaving Burris as the favorite to start in Week 1.

Bills DE Shawne Merriman (Achilles, shoulder surgeries) insists he's 100 percent.

"I feel very comfortable right now," said the oft-injured pass rusher. Coach Chan Gailey has liked what he's seen. "He looks quick. He looks healthy," Gailey said. "That part of it has been refreshing for us, to see some what of I think we're going to see is the old Shawne Merriman this year."

oops, copied an old one by mistake.

lolz

guess we really are seeing an old shawne merriman this year.

Vikings RCB Chris Cook suffered a concussion in last Friday's win over the Bills.

Panthers MLB Jon Beason (hamstring) is questionable for Week 1.

Beason has missed the majority of camp with an injury he admits he suffered while overcompensating for his surgically-repaired Achilles' tendon.

Coach Andy Reid acknowledged that rookie CB Brandon Boykin has "narrowed the gap" on Joselio Hanson in the Eagles' nickel back competition.

Per the Boston Herald's Jeff Howe, "word is" free agent DE Andre Carter still lacks speed and explosion coming off last year's torn quadriceps muscle.

Giants WLB Michael Boley has missed almost all of training camp due to a hamstring pull.

Steelers OLB Jason Worilds (wrist surgery) still has no timetable for a return.

Worilds' wrist issue is proving to be much more severe than originally thought. He remains on the active/PUP list even though he claimed he just had a "cleanup" procedure more than two months ago. Second-year man Chris Carter has been filling in for James Harrison (knee) with the first-stringers.

Brian Urlacher went to Europe in May or June to seek an alternative treatment on his knee.

The Bears and Urlacher won't confirm it, but he almost certainly had the "Kobe surgery." Performed by German-based Dr. Peter Wehling, the non-invasive procedure involves taking blood from an athlete, spinning it and then injecting the protein-rich serum back into a troublesome knee. It worked wonders for Kobe Bryant last season and has also been used by Alex Rodriguez, Grant Hill, Vijay Singh and others.

The Buccaneers have inserted rookie WLB Lavonte David into their nickel package.Already holding a starting job, David will be an every-down player in Greg Schiano's defense. David will square off with Jimmy Graham, Tony Gonzalez, and Greg Olsen in the NFC South, so his coverage skills will be tested. It's still great news for his IDP value. We like his chances of leading the Bucs in tackles.

Thanks for pointing that out. It does not say anywhere in that story that David has been inserted into their nickel packages.

Here is the whole story as written:

Link

The Bucs have to be pleased with the way rookie weak-side linebacker Lavonte David has seamlessly joined the starting lineup and become a contributor.

Through two preseason games, the Bucs feel rather good about the decision to draft him in the second round out of Nebraska.

But tonight’s game against the Patriots presents a unique test for David. With New England’s savvy and heavy use of tight ends, David could be asked to take on Aaron Hernandez and/or Rob Gronkowski in pass coverage.

The Bucs sometimes include David in their nickel package, which they use on passing downs, meaning it’s likely David will be dropping into coverage at times. And, at some of those times, he’s likely to get matched up with this dangerous pair of tight ends.

There’s also a bigger picture here. It’s not just about tonight, not when you consider the proliferation of pass-catching tight ends around the league. Just look at what the Bucs face in their own division, with Jimmy Graham in New Orleans and Tony Gonzalez in Atlanta. David needs to be ready for those matchups when they come, and this game could be a preview.

Rookie safety Mark Barron and safety Ronde Barber – something of a tight end specialist – might get isolated on the tight ends at times, too.

But David, at least in the nickel package, will be in the thick of things, lining up near the line of scrimmage. When the Bucs drafted David, among the things they coveted was his coverage skills.

And tonight, look for those to be put to the test against New England.

oops sorry guys. I will have to learn to look at the actual story when Rotoworld is involved. Thanks for pointing it out!

Part of my job responsibilities in the real world is being an investigator.

The sentence "The Buccaneers have inserted rookie WLB Lavonte David into their nickel package" is actually true.

The have inserted him... sometimes.

How information is presented and the meaning behind it is the key here.

As expected, the Redskins have been giving CB DeAngelo Hall snaps at free safety this preseason.

Hall admits he's still adjusting to tackling angles and coverage duties at the new position, but the Redskins are following through with their original plan of using him in a Charles Woodson-type role. When Hall plays safety in the nickel, Cedric Griffin and Josh Wilson have been on the corners

Lions LCB Chris Houston was forced from Saturday night's preseason game with a left ankle injury.

Houston was shown being attended to on the sideline by the Lions' training staff and is questionable to return. Bill Bentley started at right cornerback over Jacob Lacey and was also removed from the game with a shoulder injury.

It's a good sign for Williams, who may not even be back to 100-percent health after undergoing foot surgery last season. Williams was Pro Football Focus' top-rated defensive tackle in 2010.
