So far they've given contracts to Stevie Johnson, Ruvell Martin, Scott Chandler and Kirk Morrison. They've also said that they extended a contract offer to D. Bell but haven't heard back from him. Heading into free agency today, the Bills have holes at LT, DE, WR and CB. They also could use some depth at OLB.

The Bills have ~$30M to spend under the cap and Buddy Nix has said multiple times now that the Bills plan to be very aggressive in free agency and make a splash. Also said that there are no spending limits outside of the spending cap.

In an interview on WGR this morning, Nix said that they have 2 players that they are really targeting and essentially want to be done in free agency by Friday. He said that people would recognize the names of the 2 players that the Bills are targeting.

I'm not really sure who the second guy is, but I'm pretty certain that the first guy is Vincent Jackson. Other Buffalo players have been hitting the guy up via Twitter, including former teammate Shawn Merriman. Nix was also one of the guys that drafted Jackson to begin with while he was in SD.

I have to imagine the other player will be a defensive player. The ridiculous side of me says Mario Williams, but I think it will be someone lower calibre than that. Perhaps one of the guys released by Indy? Could be a LT too I guess, but I'm not sure who that would be.

In the end, I just feel like us Bills fans are getting setup to be disappointed. There are other good teams out there with lots of cap room that are pursuing those top guys too. I feel like Buffalo is either going to end up being outbid for guys, or they're actually targeting lesser players that I won't be all that excited about anyway.

I guess that's what it has come to as Bills fans, we're always cynics because it always ends poorly anyway. Here's hoping that the Bills actually not only make a nice splash, but that the player(s) they get actually perform up to their expectations as well. Hopefully with their young talent and players that are genuinely excited about playing for Buffalo, they won't be forced to give out anymore ridiculous Langston Walker/Derrick Dockery type contracts where they grossly overpay mediocre talent.

I hate being a cynic, too. But what choice do the Bills give us?

Big name players do not come to Buffalo because the team is bad, the city and weather are bad, and income taxes are sky high. They will strike out on the top tier and overpay for the second tier. That is the unfortunate reality for this team until they are a proven winner.

Mario is a perfect fit for what the Bills need. Absolutely perfect. Will be surprised if they make a legit run at him, but he's exactly what they need.

I don't get the Vincent Jackson stuff. Fitz not exactly known for his deep balls and that's where Jackson excels.

Reports right now are that the Bills are actually the favoriteto land Williams as of now since they are offering the most money. Nice.If they get Wilkiams and Meachem, that would be an awesome start to FA. Then they can turn to the draft and get some help at LT and CB.

Mario Williams en route to visit BillsMarch 13, 2012 - 4:57 PM | 3 commentsBuffalo Bills may be getting aggressive in free agency like never before in their history.Houston Texans defensive end Mario Williams is en route to visiting the Bills tonight, the News confirmed. ESPN reported it first. Williams is the top defensive player available in free agency and probalby will command the highest salary for a defensive player in NFL history. His deal may eclipse the one Chicago gave to defensive end Julius Peppers, which called for $42 million in guaranteed money over the first three years.Meanwhile, reports indicate the Bills also have a visit scheduled with New Orleans receiver Robert Meachem.Bills General Manager Buddy Nix has said for a couple of weeks the Bills would be aggressive in free agency. But Buffalo never has gone after a target as prominent as Williams. Buffalo's biggest previous free-agent signing was guard Derrick Dockery, who got a $7 million-per-year deal in 2007.Williams, 6-foot-7 and 290 pounds, was the first overall pick of the 2006 NFL Draft. He has 53 sacks in six seasons. He had 14 sacks in 2007, 12 in 2008, nine in 2009, 8.5 in 2010 and five in five games in 2011. Williams missed the last 11 games of last season due to a torn pectoral muscle. However, he is fully healthy now. The Texans entered free agency with only $1 million in space under the salary cap and were in no position to re-sign Williams.Meachem, 6-2 and 214, would fill the Bills' need for a big outside receiver to complement Stevie Johnson. Meachem was a first-round pick in 2008 and has an impressive combination of size and speed. He ran a 40-yard dash time of 4.39 seconds (Lee Evans speed) coming out of the University of Tennessee. He has averaged 43 catches and 6.6 touchdowns over the past three years. He had 45 catches for 722 yards in 2009, 44 for 638 yards in 2010 and 40 for 620 yards last season. The Bills entered free agency with about $19.5 million in space under the salary cap, according to News figures. Only about eight or 10 teams had more space. The Bills had about $34 million in cash space under the cap. Teams can spend over the cap in actual cash but not in "cap dollars." Cap dollars includes amortized signing bonuses for all players on the roster, not just money spent this year.

It's confirmed that Super Mario has landed in Buffalo. Nix and Wanny flew there with him in a private jet. I think this is virtually a done deal.

Just heard the Bills are willing to make Mario Williams the highest paid defensive player in the league.

I'm ok with that. Bring him on!

Wow, apparently the Bills are deadly serious about signing Mario Williams:

@JoeB_WGR: Per @gggaughan of The Buffalo News, #Bills are committed to making Mario Williams the highest paid defensive player in the league. Whoa.
I'm a huge fan of Super Mario, but his injury history scares me. If you're the Bills, I guess you gotta overpay to get guys in Buffalo. I just hope that if they do this, it works out and doesn't doom the next decade.Ralph Wilson clearly realizing that his time here on earth is short and it's time to go all out to try to win one.

yea i dont know man, obviously i'm happy if we get him b/c it will make us a lot better, but he isn't close to the best defensive player or even defensive end in the league.

I would put him top 3. He's one of the best overall DE's in the NFL. I put him right behind J.Allen and JPP.

Yea and i think that playing next to Kyle Williams and Marcel Dareus is going to make him much more productive. All in all i guess its a good move, but 100million dollar 40+ mil+ guaranteed contracts are scary lol.

Someone pointed out in the Pierre Garçon thread that the new tv deal kicks in next year and it's possible the cap could go up by up to $50M. If that ends up being the case, that contract won't seem as bad as long as he's not hurt all the time and as long as some of the guaranteed money is only guaranteed for injury.

it's not your money. about time Wilson opens up the vault.

years of pinching pennies has put them in a position to overpay for a guy. why not have it be the best FA player available who also happens to play a position you need the most help at?

love the fact that they are going after him aggressively. if it doesn't work out, it's because of how poorly they have managed the franchise in the past.

good points.

Call me crazy, but I think this is gonna happen. I think we get Meachem too. If we get both of them I could see us being a tough team to beat if the offense plays how it did the first half of the year. Meachem is in my opinion the perfect fit for the other side of Stevie. Deep threat (if Fitz can reach him) that can block well. That's exactly what we need.

Buddy Nix typically goes to bed at like 9pm. Bills making a huge splash this year. The NFL started free agency at 4pm instead of 12am. Coincidence?

================================================================================================================================================================

This is a true story, it would take the Bills to make it so obvious.

As many of you know, my career started with the Bills, I have many close friends and ties in Western NY. It's where I got a little deeper in the Mario Williams situation.

FA started at 4pm Est time, Mario boarded a private jet with tail number NH** (sorry was asked to keep the last 2 digits off) at 2:07CDT (according to flight records). From run way to run way it is 1366 miles or about 2 hours and 50 minute flight time. His jet landed in Rochester NY at 5:13EST.

How is it that Jet made it 1366 miles or made a 2hr and 50min flight in only 1hr and 13min unless the Jet actually left earlier? Despite all that and assuming the records are wrong and the jet arrived at 6:50EST (Which we all know did not happen), how is it the Bills contacted Williams agent and arranged a flight in less then 7 minutes?

Better yet, 3 rooms at the Courtyard Brighton were booked by the Bills under a alias (Sorry can't say, used to be what I did) for tonight and tomorrow 3 days ago. Normally you would think this is business as usual, the Bills were certain they would need them, they surely would have someone in for a visit.....right.......uh yeah. Hotel staff was instructed to express their excitement for the guests to make them feel welcome. One hotel staffer was instructed to address the guest as "Mario" and not "Mr. Williams" as it was told Mario quickly reminds anyone who does so that Mr. Williams is reserved for his grandfather.

Not sure where you're getting your info, but according to the Bills website, Nix & Co. picked up Mario in North Carolina, which is less than 550 miles and only a 60-75 minute flight to Buffalo.http://www.buffalobills.com/news/article-1/Top-FA-pass-rusher-Williams-arrives-in-Buffalo/05e04127-01c5-4d86-814c-c79ca57496bc
Bills GM Buddy Nix and defensive coordinator Dave Wannstedt flew to North Carolina Tuesday afternoon to personally escort free agent DE Mario Williams back to Buffalo by private jet. Williams agreed to see what the Bills had to offer and traveled back to Buffalo with Nix and Wannstedt.Williams is now having dinner with Nix, Wannstedt, CEO Russ Brandon, head coach Chan Gailey and DT Kyle Williams this evening as the Bills brass put on the full court press to land the prized free agent. Defensive line coach Giff Smith and assistant defensive line coach William Inge are also seated at the table.
Further, there has been speculation that they went to dinner in downtown Buffalo at Tempo restaurant with the private 2nd floor dining room reserved for them. Not sure why you'd think they'd take him to Rochester. They're going out of the way to show how heavily they're courting him.

From Buffalo News:

Meachem & critical massMarch 13, 2012 - 9:21 PM | 0 commentsHere's why the Bills could use wide receiver Robert Meachem - or someone like him. They have one of the better one-two running back combinations in the league in Fred Jackson and C.J. Spiller. They have a go-to X-receiver on the outside in Stevie Johnson. They have very capable targets for the middle of the field in slotman David Nelson and tight end Scott Chandler. What they're lacking is the outside guy to stretch the field from the flanker or Z position. With somebody reliable in that spot, the offense all of a sudden has critical mass. Johnson and the middle-of-the-field targets become much harder to defend. The Bills’ starting Z receiver last year averaged only 10.1 yards a catch and produced only two catches of more than 30 yards. It would have helped on third downs, too. The Bills were 28th in third-down conversion percentage. The Bills have some young guys who might develop and could provide excellent depth in Donald Jones, Marcus Easley and David Clowney. A guy like Meachem would strike more fear into defenses.---Mark Gaughan

Screw you Yahoo. That headline is just downright insulting. :bleep: you.http://sports.yahoo.com/blogs/nfl-shutdown-corner/buffalo-bills-report-mario-williams-actually-considering-buffalo-233347846.html;_ylt=AqtTb2ETPGqXhyhu1yjY1_VDubYF
it's true though. ownership/management has put themselves in this position.

There may be some truth, although I think it's overblown. In fact, I think you've actually posted some of the relevant points before about how they've opened the wallet and paid guys before. They just have sucked at evaluating talent. Tom Donahoe was supposed to be a great GM and was talked up around the league before the Bills brought him in as GM. He sucked. The Bills were terrible at identifying talent under him. But the Bills have been willing to spend. I broke down their spending versus that of the Pats in another thread a while ago and they're basically right there with the Pats. The difference is that Buffalo just hasn't identified talent well. I think we're all aware of their failings over the last decade plus.It just seems incredibly low and unprofessional to run that as a headline on a website like Yahoo. I could absolutely see that on Deadspin, PFT or Bleacher Report, but that's pretty pathetic by Yahoo to stoop to such levels on a piece that seems like it's just supposed to be a news piece.

when your franchise has the longest non-playoff streak, I think it's reasonable and expected for media members to take shots at them like that. team seems to be turning a corner lately though so hopefully they can get Mario to buy in.

Expected? Probably. Reasonable? I don't think so. If Peter King or Gregg Easterbrook or Bill Barwell take a shot at Buffalo in a column it's one thing. To take a shot at them in a news piece headline is cheap and tawdry.

Oh well, someday the Bills WILL turn it around. Hopefully this offseason is a major part of that. Being able to shove it down the throats of the haters when that time comes will taste all the more sweet.

that didn't look like a news article to me.looks like a blog entry from Shutdown Corner.last paragraph sums it up pretty well:

And there's no reason that the Bills shouldn't be excited. That a superstar like Williams is considering them amounts to a vote of confidence. He can go just about anywhere he wants. If he didn't believe he could win in Buffalo, and if he didn't like the foundation and coaching staff in place, he wouldn't be there. And landing Williams would only make it easier to land other targets on their free-agent list.

Mario Williams - LB - Texans

NFL.com's Jason La Canfora reports free agent DE/OLB Mario Williams will likely leave Buffalo without signing, and is expected to make at least one more visit

Chargers were willing to pay Meachum more then we were. That's fine. Still think we will get Mario. If not, i don't know what to say....lol

Considering some of the money that's being thrown around, best move you guys made was sign Stevie Styles to a cheap contract. If i were him, I'd be getting new representation.

:goodposting: We stole him. Garcon got more money didn't he? I know Colston got more.

I know what to say. Move the franchise to another city. No one wants to come there, even when you throw loads of money at them.

Mario left Buffalo without signing - and has already said he plans to visit at least one other team before making a decision. I, for one, was impressed when many were reporting that the Bills were going to try to land Meachum and Williams...now, I am not nearly as impressed. In fact, if the Bills don't land Williams, I think Bills fans have every right to be po'd.

Funny because everyone seemed to want to go to Philly last year and they still sucked. Must be the hostile fan environment and overall depressing city that is Philly that causes their perpetual loserdom. If Buffalo loses out on Mario, that will suck. Not paying Robert Meachem $6M a year isn't something I consider a loss. Seeing what they have in Marcus Easley, drafting Michael Floyd or trading up from the top of the 2nd to late 1st to draft Stephen Hill all sound like better options than paying Meachem $6M a year.Forgot that flap was a Bears fan, not a Philly fan. Well, Mario could certainly be the whippersnapper on the Bears while Urlacher and Briggs hobble around. Maybe he can even make some extra money babysitting their grandkids.
