Dynasty Start Up Draft Thoughts For Pick 1.06

15 posts in this topic

I have a dynasty start up draft this weekend and just found out I have the 6th pick. It's a 12 man ppr league with idp(1QB,3WR,2RB,1TE,1W/R,1W/R/T). I know that Newton will be available but I'd be missing out on CJ2K,Ryan Matthews,MJD. A top 3 QB or Top 5 RB, which direction would you take? Any thoughts appreciated.

The six spot is the absolutely worst spot in a start-up. There's a fair drop from the obvious Top 5. I've drafted from both the 6 and the 7 spot recently. Both times I tried to move down but no one took the bait. I took Cam at 6 and AJ Green at 7. I would never take the 2nd tier RB's at 1.06. You'll get one of them at 2.07. If Matthews and CJ are gone then MJD, Forte, AP or DMC will be there.

But plan A should be to trade down IMO

Take Green/Newton and be happy with it. Get RB's later.

I was leaning that way. Grabbing Newton at six and than trying to get Julio Jones or DeMarco Murray in the 2nd round. I just was wondering if Matthews would work his way up towards that 1st tier now that Tolbert is in Carolina. Lot more oppurtunities coming his way this year.

Just throwing in my two cents, if it's not too late. I would at least consider Matthew Stafford in this spot as well. He has been great when healthy, plays in an extremely pass-happy offense, and doesn't rely on rushing touchdowns as much as Newton. I love Newton but I currently rank him just behind Stafford because I believe his rushing totals will decline (at least the touchdowns). It's just a thought.

I think Stafford is a player I'd consider also. I'd love for Calvin to fall to me but I don't really think that will happend.

I do know the guy picking at 12 really likes Newton. Maybe I could swing some sort of trade that would also include the 1.01 pick for the rookie draft next month. Maybe swap first round picks in both drafts.

I'm open to any thoughts.

But while Stafford didn't rely on rushing TDs he did rely on an extremely high number of attempts that is unlikely to be repeated.

You'd probably be very lucky to see Julio there that late. Most startups I have seen he is one of the first 4 WR's off the board, even saw him go in the mid-1st as the 2nd WR taken. I would recommmend trading back if you can. WR is deep so moving back into the late 1st or early 2nd can still net you a top notch WR like a Nicks and you should be able to wring some pretty nice value out of what you receive for the move down. If you can swing a deal with the #12 guy where you get the #1 rookie by all means do it. If that won't work, you may also consider moving back to the 10 or 11 as well so that you can draft Andrew Luck as your QB and then focus on young WR's or RB's with your Vet draft picks.I didn't realize that people still did split initial drafts still... owning the rights to Trent Richardson is like having an extra 1st round pick in a startup, that's a massive advantage. I'd rather have the 12 than the 1st overall pick in that setup easy.

there is no way i would take stafford at 1.6. come on people, he has had 1 great season, and 2 poor injury riddled seasons. you don't win leagues in round #1 but sure can lose them.

take a top flight young wr or rb. if you go mathews or green, then try and go the other way in round 2. wait on your qbs.

I would not want to take Newton at 6 in a 12 team league that starts that many RB/WR/TE flexes. I would want to go RB or WR, and personally I lean towards WR's for their longer longevity. I'd be very happy with Green at that spot in a PPR league.
