***Official*** 2012 FBG Subscriber Contest Thread (3 Viewers)

Totally understand your line of thought, and I agree. The issue is that if they perform too poorly you are also out - so it leads to some paradoxical rooting interests.

For example, for purposes of the contest I was quite happy with Julio's performance last night to thin him out a bit.

Also, I have Graham + Hernandez + Dwayne Allen at TE. I think my ideal scenario here is for Hernandez to sit out until week 6 to thin his ownership, but would really like him back for Graham's bye week.
That is precisely along the lines of my thinking. For purposes of this contest* I am not terribly troubled by Forte's injury because I have Bush. I am concerned that I now have no "back-up" to Bush so an injury to him could be really hard for me to overcome. That fear aside, I'm thinking that the risk of the "average" Forte owner being eliminated is greater than my specific risk. Also, if I am still alive when Forte returns, the risk of the "average" Bush owner being eliminated will be greater than my specific risk.

*For purposes of the league in which I have Forte but not Bush, however, I am terribly troubled by Forte's injury. Situational assessment in fantasy football is something my wife can't get -- "You want that player to do well because you have him in a league, but not too well because you're playing against him in another league? Fantasy football is stupid."

It's interesting to me that everyone cheers for owners of other players to be eliminated early in order to help their teams. At some level I get that, but I actually want owners of my players to be eliminated in the early weeks. I figure if, say, all S. Jackson and Forte owners besides me are gone and those guys throw-up big numbers late, I get a huge bump against the field. As the season wears on, I shift my cheering for owners of other players to be eliminated. In the early going, however, I want to become part of a very small group of owners for all of my players.
This is the basis for the closely related theory that it's better to barely skate by the cut in the early weeks as opposed to putting up big scores. Not because you're "wasting points," but because it's assumed that if you just barely make the cut, then a lot of teams similar to your own will get eliminated. If you think uniqueness is important, then this might be plausible.
At the end of the day you are going to need to score the most points in the top 250. So uniqueness for its own sake is meaningless. However, let's assume you had the perfect roster in the top 250 so you optimize the point scoring. But let's assume someone has an identical roster, your expected value just got reduced. So I don't think it is a large leap that uniqueness on good players (high-point scorers) is desirable. If you also think there is little or no relationship between points scored in the early weeks and weeks 14-16 then you would want your "good" players to be thinned out a little, assuming you stay in the contest.

Granted, we don't know the players that are going to go off in weeks 14-16 so this is all kinds of statistically improbable of making a difference. But the general idea holds imho.

Where do you find this? I hope you are right about it being good to barely make the cut. Out of 21 RB/WR/TE (30-man total) I managed only 3 TDs and one was Andre Roberts :bag: So I'm part of the reason 30-man rosters didn't hold up as well as 29. 147.60 :scared:

In my case it's more because I know Julio is a stud and on so many rosters that the % ownership could get so high that it would be difficult to advance 13 straight weeks against that crowd. Maybe I should have selected him but I thought (wrongly thus far) that Marshall would be more consistant.

I built my own database of all the entries in the contest. Each week I'll usually post some summary stats like this, as well as anything else I find interesting or relevant to the discussion at that time. FBG provides this querier where you can look up some very general information on your own, as well. I don't actually know if it's good to barely make the cut. I actually suspect it's probably not good, in terms of predicting your success in later weeks. But, in theory, if you value uniqueness, then being close to the cut would seem to be more likely to weed out teams similar to your own. If you score 200+, then everyone with the same players as you probably also had a great week.

Here's a table showing the survival rates for teams that owned each player. It's pretty long so I put it in spoilers (I thought there was a way to add a scrolling code box but it doesn't seem to be working?)

Code:

I thought this was pretty funny somehow.-QG

If nothing else, it proves the lack of reliability on small sample sizes.

I'm going to go ahead and predict that something very close to 100% of Stafford owners will advance this week. The Titans might be the worst NFL team I've seen in years. I told LHucks he would have more than 1 test this season. This week probably won't be one of them.

Ooooooooooooooooooooof my earliest dismissal ever. I followed up a 190s week one effort with a 90s week two effort. I had double digit scoring from a slew of my roster in week one and only from two guys in week two.

Very disappointed that I will not be tagging along any longer this year. This is an exciting contest and I wish you guys that are so active in this thread the best of luck and long life in the weeks ahead.

Adios

Survived week 2 despite my WR's being a real let down. Garcon out, Blackmon Goose egg, Torrey Smith slow start, Maclin battling injuries.

I don't think uniqueness is particularly important for uniqueness's sake. My thought process in this regard is not terribly different than I tried to articulate about projections -- in week 2 I still feel comfortable with my original projections/thoughts about players (injuries and roll changes excepted of course) to feel that they were generally accurate. At this point in the season, I don't have enough data to make me conclude that I blew any of my picks. As such, I am still of the general opinion that I drafted the "right" team -- as I would imagine most owners who are still alive feel about their respective teams. At the end of the day, no one drafted player X thinking he was the "wrong" choice. To be sure, as the season wears on and we get more data, I may conclude that player X was a really crappy choice for inclusion on my team and realize that if I fare well it will be IN SPITE of him not BECAUSE of him. At that point, I'm forced to root against owners of other superior players at that position. Right now, however, I still like my team about as much as when I picked it.
OR, you can be like me and review your team after the deadline to find that all three of your QBs are sitting in week 7 - Pretty sure I won't be around in week 8.

Was looking for something in the 2011 thread and stumbled across this - more fodder for the "uniqueness" debate:

Made the final 250 for the first time ever. Thank you Floyd for coming back this week and even a bigger thank you Lord Stephens-Howling whose OT heorics were the difference at my flex postion.

I think I'm in the top 100 total scores for the year, however I have zero chance to finish in the big money. My roster is completely covered by the field...

Brady 13%, Stafford >50%

Wells 50%, Bush 30%, Tate >50%, Barber and Jones around 20%

VJ 30%, Floyd 20%, Moore 35%, Manningham 16%, Moore 40%, Brown >50%, Burleson >50%

Graham 40%, Kendricks 40%

Even my kickers and Ds are roughly around 20% ownership.

My only real difference makers are Brady and Pettigrew. The one commonly held guy that I don't have is Ray Rice and he's the one I would need to be competitive.

I think I'm pretty much locked into a 75th to 175th finish.
If I recall correctly, BnB finished 9th overall.

Interesting. I like the querier. I would have to assume Amendola has the highest survival rate at 98.78% this week. You really, really had to screw up not to make the cut with Amendola.

I will be sure to listen to your advice every other week now. :P

There are 478 live teams that will be taking a guaranteed zero at QB at least once this year: 213 have only 1 QB, 250 have only 2 QBs who both share the same bye week, and 15 have 3 QBs, all of whom share the same bye week. So you're not alone. :)Also, I always like to point out that the guy who won the whole contest a few years ago took a zero at QB in week 9 or so, when one of his QBs was on bye and the other was injured. So it's not necessarily the death of your team, though it's certainly not good.

It is interesting to look at the Amendola owners that didn't make the cut. Some of them were obvious junk entries that weren't going to make it very far regardless, while others were reasonable entries that just had a bad week and barely missed:

And Winslow is apparently going to sign with the Pats :lmao: -QG
Dude is just toying with us. Gonna show everyone how to win with a roster that cost a total of $121.
Guy probably started by selecting his cheap sleeper picks and forgot to come back and fill in the higher priced players. This is how I start my teams roster. Low value players and kicker/defense then fill in the higher priced guys.

Earliest exit ever for me. Thanks WR corp! :bye:

Julio Jones $23 5.50

Torrey Smith $16 7.10

Lance Moore $11 5.00

Titus Young $10 2.10

Justin Blackmon $7 0.00

Steve Smith $5 6.90

My thoughts exactly.

I often speak in bold declaratives in this forum, so I'll try to be humble and ask an honest question with a bold font:

Did I totally blow it by paying for both Brees and Ryan?

I figured at 6 points per passing TD, one of those two guys would help me out every week.

Was looking for something in the 2011 thread and stumbled across this - more fodder for the "uniqueness" debate:

'BassNBrew said:

Interesting enough and further pointing out my wrongness...if I had rostered another highly owned guy Megatron over VJax I would have finished second knocking on the door for first place. That said, Buffalo D and their 29 points moved me up 20 spots and Brady and Pettigrew contributed two huge scores that most didn't get.

Who'd have thought that the $6 I spent on Tannehill + Myers would have saved my bacon this week? Only four teams have the same combination, and both players scored for three of them. (I'm the only one that was close enough to the cut for it to have mattered though.)

I know people had to be eliminated in week 1, but I'd have hoped that it would have been mostly junk entries and not regular posters.

We'll see at the end of the year. My initial thought is you could have used the money better elsewhere.

I suppose my strategy was I'd have a top flight QB even if one of those guys is out for an extended period.

We'll see at the end of the year. My initial thought is you could have used the money better elsewhere.
I suppose my strategy was I'd have a top flight QB even if one of those guys is out for an extended period.
I couldn't figure out any way to have reliable depth at every position in case of injury. I went with depth in numbers @ WR and made a conscious effort to have some degree of reliability @ RB. That didn't leave me enough to do the same @ QB, so that's where (IMO) my greatest injury-risk lies.

Over one third (238/693) of the B. Marshall/D. McFadden owners were eliminated.
:) 88/212 (41%) eliminated with those two and JJones. Add Dex and 20 of 33 teams (60%) were eliminated. I don't think it's initial big-name uniqueness that matters, it's who remains.

I BARELY made the cut after breaking 220 last week. I think that has to be a good thing as it weeds out some similar rosters and I think I like my chances albeit a few different decisions for depth would have really put me over the top. I had MBennett and Amendola in at one point (among others to hit early) but wanted Turbin and thought Tolbert would provide burst value (which he actually did this week) ... as did James Jones in week 1. Long season though and some of my studs already had a bad game.
