Hopefully this stuff ends.

Al Galdi ‏@AlGaldi#Redskins signed two bad-boy safeties. So far the results (DUI arrest for Meriweather, year-long suspension for Jackson) are, uh, not great.

*Was on the Redskins’ roster at some point during the 2011 season

**On the PUP list, could return between Weeks Six and Nine

Of the nine players the Redskins drafted last April, eight made their current (as of this moment) 52-man roster. Only tackle Tom Compton, a sixth-round pick, was released. He is a good candidate for the practice squad.

For the most part, the draft picks’ roster spots did not come at the expense of the team’s 12-man draft class of 2011. Nine of those players remain. One other 2011 pick, Chris Neild, is on injured reserve. Linebacker Markus White could join the practice squad but cornerback Brandyn Thompson is not eligible.

Going back to Mike Shanahan’s first draft class, two players remain from 2010—tackle Trent Williams and linebacker Perry Riley. Both are starters. The other two remaining members of that group, offensive lineman Erik Cook and receiver Terrence Austin, were released.

Doing the math, you have 19 of the 52 players on the roster (37 percent) drafted by the current administration. Five other Redskins were drafted by previous regimes so a total of 46 percent of the roster was drafted by the franchise.

Still, most of the 19 drafted players will play reserve roles. Only nine players drafted by the Redskins (and five drafted by Shanahan) are expected to be starters this year.

In all, only 11 players on the current roster were with the organization when Shanahan took the reigns. The other 41 were drafted, signed, or traded for by Shanahan.

Everything seems to point towards an improved roster. But, I think I see it that way every year, only to be disappointed a few weeks into the season.

In the interest of good sportsmanship I think we should stop in occasionally to the Cowboys' regular season topic (if they start one) to take a shift babysitting Dez Bryant.

Week 1 will be interesting. I assume the Saints are going to come out buzzing with an us-against-the-world mentality. I think they'll start the season hot and fade as the season progresses. Defensively, they could be pretty bad. Week 1 will probably be the worst week to face them.

Brees is going to carve us apart. He'll throw for 500 yards if he wants to.

It's hard to predict. I agree they'll start with that mentality, but 1 or 2 hits of early adversity in the game may really throw them off, throw some uncertainty into them without Payton to keep the car from going into the ditch. Or they may just overwhelm the Skins like the Germans overwhelmed Pearl Harbor. It's hard to see Brees having a bad day.

Great article on offensive line play today. I learned some stuff reading it.

link

As I went through my tour of training camps, it struck me how one theme was constant wherever I went: offensive line play is a concern. Every team had some sort of issue up front on offense. I don’t believe there is a coaching staff in the league that is completely comfortable with its offensive line.

There is no question line play has deteriorated in recent years. Neither individual linemen nor offensive line units are what they used to be. So I started to ask people what they thought the reasons were. Here are some of the theories I heard.

*As athletes, offensive linemen have not kept pace with pass rushers.

“Offensive line play probably is not as good as it used to be because, more than ever, all the best athletes play defense,” Giants general manager Jerry Reese told me. “You see it at the combine. The height, weight, speed difference between the lines is pretty dramatic.”

Cooley Interview

:lmao: @:

During the conversation, Cooley revealed that he knew about his release on Monday and spent time on the sideline during practice talking to Dan Snyder and sharing memories, including one about Joe Gibbs and why he wanted Cooley on the team.

“The idea that Joe Gibbs thought I was a Mormon, a good religious kid and that’s why I came here,” Cooley said with a laugh. Snyder “laughed and said Joe came into his office six months later and said, ‘He’s not a Mormon at all.’ ”

We finished our fantasy football draft. I got RGIII, Royster, and Morris.

I waited a long time for a qb and took RGIII and Matt Ryan as my starters. Royster and Morris were both end of the draft fliers. I figure I have the Redskins' starting RB for about 2/3 of the games.

Helu?good luck guessing along with the Skelator.I don't care the value or round, I am avoiding Skin RB's at all costs this year. Shanny has been killing FFL owners since TD/Portis (2003).stay away.

John Keim about the Redskins' final roster.

There's too much to quote but it's worth a read.
good read.interesting to see Sean "the Human Turnstile" Locklear will be starting at OT for Giants Wed nite.

duck Eli!

surprised to see OT willie smith cut (and sign w Oakland - what do they see in out cut OT's (Heyer, too)?

hope keeping Black was the proper move

…Is the line depth really better? Hurt was a reserve in 2011 and he’s improved; Gettis and LeRibeus have more potential than Erik Cook and Black is better than Locklear. So yes it is. The single biggest thing the Redskins’ line needs is cohesion among the starters. That alone will help them improve.

By the way, if you guys haven't seen this yet it's pretty funny. You can click on any team.

This week's opponent.

And the best part about all this is that the Saints doubled down on the stupid and handed the interim head coaching job to a guy who is himself serving a six-game suspension. Then they got into a contract squabble with Drew Brees, who is only the most important player the franchise has ever had and probably will ever have. It's as if, in January, the Saints looked at themselves and were like, "Jesus, we've gotten wayyy too functional and successful. THAT'S NOT WHAT THE NEW ORLEANS SAINTS ARE ALL ABOUT GUMBO ANDOUILLE SAUSAGE!" And then they spent next few weeks cramming in as many bad decisions as they could so that they could reclaim their identity as the most incompetent team in football. Un####ingbelievable. This will be the most senseless 9-7 season in NFL history. Also, Drew Brees is going bald.
4. Holy ####, this defense. No Tracy Porter. No Jonathan Vilma for a year. No Will Smith for four games. Bear in mind that this is the same defense that allowed Alex Smith to throw for two touchdowns in the final 2:18 of last season's divisional playoff loss. And now it's somehow even worse. The season hasn't even started yet and Vernon Davis has already caught 500 yards worth of passes against it. GOOD THING MY MAWMAW MADE THIS HERE BLACKENED GUMBOLAYA HOOWEE SOMEBODY GIT ME A WASHBOARD AND A SPOON SO WE CAN HAVE A BOUCHERIE. Whatever. Eat ####.

So what are the thoughts on if Santana Moss is relevant as a meaningful part of the passing game? Seeing him NOT listed as a starter is a very unusual thing.

While S.Moss is not listed as a starter, I think it's a safe bet to say that there won't be much difference between the # of snaps he sees, and those of Garcon, Morgan and Hankerson. He's still the most experienced and polished of the WR, and the main reason he isn't listed as a 'starter' is because the Redskins' base offense is a 2WR set, and they are playing him out of the slot this season to take advantage of his quickness and create matchup problems. I don't think at any point in his career had the kind of advantage and seen the kind of coverage he's going to see this year, and it plays to his advantage. He's going to get open. Just remains to be seen if Griffin can consistently get him the ball...

You can currently draft Moss as a WR5/6 maybe even 7. If Griff shows he can get it done, getting low end WR3/high end WR4 stats out of him won't be a stretch, and he'll have some spikes where he's a nice flex position spot start...

...like this week in New Orleans, which is very likely to be a road shootout for the 'skins O...

Moss' 3.8 receptions and 49 yards per game last year were career lows for him. And that was as a starter. He's on the downside of his career. He's not as fast as he used to be. The talk this offseason was about him losing weight, but I still have a hard time believing he's going to increase his production.

I think Moss is headed for WR3 or WR4 status on the Redskins. Once you include the TE and RB positions receiving targets, the picture isn't pretty for Moss as a fantasy-relevant WR. The Redskins were 5th in pass attempts last year. I don't see that repeating.

:goodposting: I'd go a touch further and say he will be a solid WR3.

I think Moss will be ok as a WR3, but we will see.

I was thinking that Hankerson really has not done much in the preseason. Is there a chance he is inactive in week 1?

I doubt it. My guess is they will have 5 WRs active (including Banks). If they were to make Hankerson inactive, that would mean Briscoe or Robinson would be active and I just can't imagine that's the route they'd go.

Maybe I am imagining things, but I could see them activating Briscoe and making Hankerson inactive.

The 2011 Washington Redskins passing attack had more completions and yards than any year during Moss' Redskins career other than 2010 (McNabb). It's not like Moss had been playing with a long line top-notch QBs before Grossman. He's getting older and slower. He's looked like a different player the last couple years with the ball in his hands. I'm just not expecting much from him. If he can excel in the slot and catch a bunch of balls, that's great. But, I'd expect fairly low yardage in that situation. At best, he'll be the 3rd option in the passing game.

If I recall correctly, Moss started off the year pretty good, got injured and missed a few games, and never looked the same once he came back from the injury.Through the first 3 games of 2011, he averaged 5 1/3 catches for 69 yards and 1/3 td. If he can get close to that, it would be pretty good. If he can't, hopefully some of these other receivers will be pushing him for playing time.

Cue the music, here comes Reed Doughty......Meriweather out 2-4 weeks!!!
The 3 safeties they brought in to bolster the secondary aren't doing much bolstering. Doughty's in good shape. He'll be doggedly pursuing New Orleans WR's down the field all night. When he gets tired they'll have Games and Madieu Williams to do the chasing.

It was fun scouting division rivals on opening night. Giants have definite chinks in their armor (at least for now). Wish we could play them a little earlier in the season.

They aren't a good team. They were 9-7 last year and got swept by a terrible Redskins team. They got hot and got a lot of lucky breaks through their run. They are the worst Super Bowl winner in the history of the league.

In a league full of parity, getting hot and lucky at the right time gives every team, including the Redskins, hope for a great season. That is the NFL.

The Cowboys' cornerbacks are very good this year. The Redskins will have a tough time passing to their WR's against them.

Redskins inactives are D. Briscoe, Brandon Meriweather, Josh LeRibeus, Rex Grossman, Chris Baker, Adam Gettis, Crezdon Butler

Who is the backup nose tackle?

Also, please note the bolded name above. We're going with a rookie RB, and rookie QB, and a backup rookie QB.

I'm amped.
