What Did I Learn....Survivor Leagues 2012 (1 Viewer)

Stinkin Ref

IBL Representative
Kinda of bored on a Friday-pretty slow here…so dove into the team that won MBSL2 to try and learn a few things and see how it happened.

2.08 Ryan, Matt ATL (10 starts) drafted QB6/24 finished QB5/5

10.08 Wilson, Russell SEA (7 starts) drafted QB25/152 finished QB11/11 (steal)

Having these two healthy all year really helped. They ham and egged it pretty well all year and I had a very solid score each week at this position, other then week 11 when Wilson was on bye and Ryan only put up 14.75. (had some monster games from other guys that week scoring 210 points with Ryan only contributing his 14.75) I had some monster scores here.

What I learned: Obviously I kind of lucked into Wilson drastically exceeding expectations, but even if you take a stud early, it’s nice to have a guy with some potential pop as your backup. Not sure I was expecting that much pop, but I got to say, I think it really helped advancing sometimes. Big believer in having 2 above average QB’s. And healthy ones.

6.08 McGahee, Willis DEN (8 starts) drafted RB26/88 finished RB28/146

7.09 Jennings, Rashad JAC (5 starts) drafted RB35/105 finished RB57/282

9.09 Royster, Evan WAS (2 starts) drafted RB44/137 finished RB 73/340

15.09 Powell, Bilal NYJ (7 starts) drafted RB65/233 finished RB 43/236 (semi steal)

18.08 Woodhead, Danny NEP (12 starts) drafted RB 68/280 finished RB24/131 (major steal)

I made this comment in the MBSL2 comment thread after the draft: “how the #### did Powell and Woodhead end up on my roster...I haven't drafted them in ANY of these mofo's”

Well as you can see, if not for those two, I probably don’t win this thing. Initially I thought maybe James Jones would be in the running for the game ball here, but I gotta think it goes to Woodhead. Last round pick that scores for me in over 2/3rds of the week. And considering the crap I had at RB compared to WR, Danny is the man. Powell in the 15th also paid off as he scored in 5 of the 7 games down the stretch. Powell and Woodhead really came on when McGahee and Jennings went down. Kind of the perfect storm.

What did I learn: Well I went in to most of these survivor drafts and anarchy drafts with the mentality to wait on RB. I made it to two survivor finals with pretty underwhelming RB corps. I want to be careful to actually think that is a good strategy because had it not been for kinda of a fluky season by Woodhead (finishing RB24) I ain’t even writing this stupid post. ( I guess if nothing else, every pick counts, so don’t lose focus at the end of the draft)

3.09 Bryant, Dez DAL (14 starts) drafted WR13/41 finished WR4/31 (steal)

4.08 Bowe, Dwayne KCC (8 starts) drafted WR22/56 finished WR42/129 (semi bust)

5.09 Blackmon, Justin JAC (9 starts) drafted WR31/73 finished WR 29/96

8.08 Moore, Lance NOS (9 starts) drafted WR42/120 finished WR 21/77 (major steal)

11.09 Jones, James GBP (11 starts) drafted WR62/169 finished WR17/63 (major steal)

I made this comment after the draft: “only 5 WR's but they all have different bye weeks....so that's a plus....and a few of them are hard core bad ### muthas”

Well, this group was pretty much money. Contributions everywhere. Big that I had all different bye weeks and having 4 of them finish in the top 30 (3 in top 21) at WR really helped. The injury to Jennings really made Jones the winner winner chicken dinner. Bryant was beastly.

What I learned: Tough to say with this group. The WR2 in NO will always have value as long as Brees is around, as will WR3 and 4’s in GB. And I guess trust your eye balls sometimes, Bryant and Blackmon pass the eye ball test as well as Bowe and even Jones for that matter. I like the big athletic WR’s that go get the ball.

1.09 Gronkowski, Rob NEP (13 starts) drafted TE2/9 finished TE6/52

12.08 Moeaki, Tony KCC TE (4 starts) drafted TE25/184 finished TE32/199

A little surprised to see Gronk still finish as TE6. Two of his “starts” above for me were when he was on bye week and in week 16 when he didn’t play. That my friends is the definition of a great fantasy player.

What did I learn: TE’s are ####### money in these things but only starting one each week compared to all of them in an Anarchy league, makes doing that dance at the beginning of the draft a little trickier. I think I would still take Gronk over a RB with question marks at that part of the draft. TE/QB start worked out okay for me.

13.09 Akers, David SFO (12 starts) drafted PK1/201 finished PK9/178

17.09 Hauschka, Steven SEA (5 starts) drafted PK22/265 finished PK12/195

14.08 Patriots, New England NEP Def (12 starts) drafted DST13/216 finished DST 3/107

16.08 Saints, New Orleans NOS Def (5 starts) drafted DST23/248 finished DST 21/194

Not much to see here other then NE outplaying their draft position pretty good. Always hate the PK and DST runs, but you kind of have to say screw it and just get on board.

Overall What did I learn: I think 2 solid QB’s is underrated in these, think it’s real important. And I think you have to be pretty lucky and have some guys not only find themselves in a better situation then where they are at before the season starts, but they need to have TALENT and perform for you when they do get in that situation. Talent will find the field eventually.

And I’ll leave you with this snippet from the League Website after the draft that I ran across while doing some research for this post about my draft (I didn’t even really know this was on here and obviously the site doesn’t know how our leagues works, but I found it funny:

“Coach Stinkin Ref had a terrible draft in the recent 2012 FBG MBSL 2 draft. Their Stinkin Ref franchise came away with the number 15 ranked draft (out of 16) in the league based on analysis by MyFantasyLeague.com.”

you can win with one defense

And you don't have to hit it "out of the park" on a late rounder.

You have to be solid in the first few rounds.

studs win in this, with injuries and no waiver moves/trades. look at that team Old MIl drafted, after the 11th round Cobb pick he got nothing to contribute besides K/Def.However he owned picks 1 -6

You can win with 3 defenses also as I did in pdsl. In fact Tennessee dst put up 37 in week 17 putting me over the top. Just no set formula here.

All luck in these formats. Luck draft spot, luck of people falling to you, luck of everyone staying healthy, luck of bye weeks, luck of schedule, luck of matchups, just all luck. At least in other formats and leagues you can have a little impact on the results. That being said, I can't wait to draft in the survivors again.

was that a 24 round PDSL...?...cause if it was....that changes things quite a bit when saying you can have 3 DST's and win....potential for more teams going the 3 DST route with 6 more draft picks....much more risk going 3 dst in the 18 rounders....
