I think you have to consider Tolbert as a surprise cut with Ward's play. Maybe Broeckel too

I also think Trusnik is a potential cut as Wegher has been playing so well on STs. We could go with just 5 LBs which would make space for Wegher.

Tolbert is the FB, and I will be surprised if they cut him.

Yep, staff seems to love him so it would be a surprise but would any cut really be a surprise after Smitty? seemingly a lot of reasons stacking up

1) Tolbert turns 30 in November (and broke his leg last year)

2) He is a FA after this year and he doesn't seem like a probable resign unless he settles for a big pay cut

3) a cut would save a lot of cap money this year ~ 2.5 mill I think

4) He has one of the last Hurney's contracts. This was not gman's guy originally..

5) Tolbert hasn't been effective at actually blocking IMO and we haven't been very good in the red zone of late with him

6) Is Lee Ward the next Brad Hoover? might be good to give him PT if Tolbert isn't the FB of the future

Tolbert is a Rivera favorite and is pretty versatile. If there is someone behind him though that can do his job I could see us getting something for him in a trade.

I just don't see a 30 year old FB with a 1 year 2.5 mill contract having any trade value.

Kalil out until at least the first game with a knee sprain. Let's hope for a speedy recovery.

This season is trending down rather quickly.

Silver lining is the division could suck again... Fingers crossed.

I don't think it will unfortunately. Atl looks promising. NO is always a threat because of Brees. Hell, even TB might be better if Winston plays to his label.

Ugh.

Really? Game day and this is on the 4th page? Shame.

Anyway our ones beat their ones so I'm good.

Corey seems to be in a bad place hope he gets his head straight we know he has the ability.

Folkert injured an ankle allegedly and that's why he got turnstiled a couple of times.

Cotch out with a groin injury that is said to be minor.

Tillman unspecified head injury.

This really should have been over in the first half. Those drops were more than a little costly. The drive to start the second half was the best of the preseason.

I don't think Tolbert is getting cut. Cam trust him, and he can still play.

Corey's drops were brutal, and there were several other plays where he's gotta be stronger at the catch point, having passes knocked away instead of going to get them.

Fozzy sighting toward the end of the first half... First time he's flashed this preseason. Also had a really nice kick return. Maybe Todman is the guy that gets cut?

Hopefully Cotchery will be fine. I think once Corey takes some of that pressure off himself of having to deliver in KB's absence, and just focuses on playing, he will be ok.

Ginn actually looked pretty solid to me too... It's gonna be a Macgyver'd WR corps, and it's not ideal, but hopefully they figure it out.

The TD pass that Cam hit him in stride was one of the prettiest throws by him in the preseason. Had crazy zip and accuracy on it. Gives me hope that Newton is still developing.

Just watching the game now, but two easy dropped INTs that were probably pick sixes on the first drive of the second half. Bene had a guaranteed pick six; Norman had a good shot. Both dropped.

Yep. Combine that with Philly's two dropped TDs and this game could have been very different.

First unit defense looks really good.

Can anyone on this team catch a football? good grief. Dropped TD passes and two botched pick 6. Glad it wasn't a regular season game. Imagine blowing an opportunity like that in a playoff game.. let alone 4 of them. Come on Corey!

Is the Brown experiment over yet? I never understood the pick. He's doing now what he did in college. He didn't fight for the ball in college and he doesn't appear to have learned to do that in the NFL either. Throw on top of that Ron putting him as #1 on the depth chart and he seems to be crumbling under the pressure. We saw flashes of improvement last year, but he seems to have regressed. Frustrating.

Assuming you mean Philly Brown... he wasn't drafted. UDFA signed by GMan.

Expectations should have always been low for Brown. Then today's Observer column by Person is projecting Boykin to be off the roster in favor of "White Rain" Bersin (I swear that guy has photos of JR doing very illegal things).

Funchess better be KB part II or they're in some trouble at WR. Teams will stack the box, double Olsen, and dare Ted Ginn and Philly Brown to beat them...

Looks like Colin Jones may end up done for the season. Groin injury requiring a look from a specialist. Double hit since he's such a part of special teams and a versatile DB. Takes options off the table for the defense.

This. Good hands and showed some abilities on intermediate routes, not just a fly down the field guy.

As mentioned, Corey Brown wasn't a draft pick. Also the first depth chart in preseason is pretty meaningless.

8-8 maybe 9-7 with this defense. Our offense is pretty bland now.

It's a little early to be sticking a fork in the team.

I agree, but the offense is going to have some problems. Defense looks good though. Sounds like a recipe for an 8-8ish season.

They're probably going to start the season with who Ginn as the #1 WR? If putting Brown as #1 wrecks his psyche, I'd say it's the exact opposite of meaningless. They need someone on this roster to step up. People are hoping it's Funchess, but I'd be shocked if that happens. He'd have to do a ton of maturing and study to get to that level. It's a bit much for a guy in his position.

I don't think Brown seeing his name as #1 on an unofficial depth chart is why he is having drops, but all of the receivers have more pressure on them with KB going down. I think Brown had some bad drops in game 1 due to nerves, and now he is in his head. Just like kickers get in their head when they start missing kicks. The Panthers are hoping Funchess will be the replacement for KB this season. I hope Funchess catches on quickly, but he has to get that hamstring healthy before he can do anything significant on the field. I think I read he left practice early today due to his hamstring feeling tight. It may have just been a precaution. I think the offense will click, I just hope it happens sooner in the season versus later.

Exactly. Not exactly a blockbuster move.

Yet you started a separate thread?

Be sure to let the board police know that people are having fun out there.

Just didn't get the point... that's all. More to sift through.

Well I hope it wasn't a high pick. He isn't particularly fast at 4.47 in the 40. Supposed to have good hands though. Seems like a slot guy, a number 3 at best. Not sure I get why we would bother.

Are any locals or Panther fans actually taking flyers in redraft on any Carolina WRs right now in drafts? - Is it pretty much Funchess?

This was on cat scratch reader:

While Carolina could have waited for Norwood to be released sometime this week, the loss of Kelvin Benjamin and the current struggles of Corey Brown forced their hand. Plus, Norwood may not have fallen to the Panthers’ spot on the waiver wire. A fourth-round pick in 2014, Norwood caught just nine passes for 102 yards as a rookie.

The Panthers, especially receivers coach Ricky Proehl, were high on the former Alabama receiver during the draft process, so much so, that according to a source, they would have used a pick on him. Instead, the Seahawks grabbed him at No. 123 overall, five spots ahead of Carolina, who then took safety Tre Boston.

Gettleman said they studied him a lot going into last year's draft, and he has the size you look for along with toughness and smarts.

Did a local draft last night. Funchess and Olsen were the only Panthers receivers picked.

A guy in my league drafted Funchess this past weekend. I drafted Olsen.

Boykin cut too... guess they're banking on Brown, Ginn, Funchess, Norwood, White Rain

NFL Philosophy @NFLosophy 5m5 minutes ago

Odd to see Carolina cut WR Jarrett Boykin, per @jjones9. When it doesn't make sense, there's reason. I tend to trust teams in this situation

Weird.

and Cotchery. Olsen will help a lot even though he will see some double teaming.
