Jadeveon Clowney DE South Carolina (1 Viewer)

Rotoworld:

Jadeveon Clowney (knee) is getting a second opinion from Dr. James Andrews.

Visiting the doctor most synonymous with athlete surgeries is rarely a good sign, but there's no concrete reason to expect Dr. Andrews to turn up bad news. With only four games remaining, however, it is possible Clowney has played his final down of the season. His status should be updated before the end of the week.

@McClain_on_NFL: Clowney's microfracture surgery on his right knee is a 9-month rehab process, which means he might not be ready for start of season.

@McClain_on_NFL: Clowney's original surgery included cartilage damage as well as the lateral meniscus.

@McClain_on_NFL: The Texans sent Clowney to Dr. James Andrews to see if he agreed with their opinion. When he did, Dr. Lowe performed the surgery.

@McClain_on_NFL: Clowney's surgery was performed on Dec. 7. Nine months is Sept. 7, but that's a long time in between.

@RapSheet: When Clowney tore his meniscus, was also cartilage damage. #Texans knew microfracture was possible. Knee wouldnt tolerate a mere cleanup

@RapSheet: Jadeveon Clowneys knee never really healed, but he tried to play through it. As is the case his final year in college, explains a lot

Rotoworld take:

Jadeveon Clowney - LB - Texans

ESPN's Adam Schefter reports Texans OLB Jadeveon Clowney (injured reserve, knee) underwent microfracture surgery on his right knee Monday and will be sidelined nine months.

It's one of the worst surgeries an NFL player can undergo. What Clowney does have going for him, though, is his youth. He'll turn 22 in February. But setbacks are common following microfracture surgery, and it's been known to derail careers. Eagles OLB Brandon Graham underwent microfracture surgery as a 22-year-old in December 2010 and wasn't back in his normal role until Week 1 of 2012. It's a real possibility Clowney misses the majority, or all, of the 2015 season. He'll be a candidate for reserve/PUP in August.

Kelce had microfracture in October and was playing in July.

Micro fracture surgery isn't all the same. Large spot on the articulate surface is obviously more severe than a small spot on the patella. Hard to say when he'll be back and how serious without more info.

Richard Lehman – founder of the U.S. Center for Sports Medicine – told The Houston Chronicle this week the Texans made the wrong move in opting for microfracture surgery for Clowney

“It could be career-ending. Everybody knows that,” Lehman told Chronicle reporter Dale Robertson of Clowney’s surgery, adding that a microfracture procedure “is fine for weekend warriors, but I’m not a fan of it for an elite athlete like Jadeveon Clowney.”

That's true, but isn't him getting microfracture a sign that he only has a small spot that he needs to regrow?

Timothy Hewett, director of research for Ohio State University Sports Medicine and director of the school's Sports Health & Performance Institute, stressed that he knew no specifics of Clowney's case and that microfracture surgery "may very well be" appropriate.

"It appears to do well mainly in small lesions (holes) and over the shorter term. I could not say how large his lesion is," said Hewett, who also acknowledged there are doubts about the procedure.

"Microfracture is sort of losing favor these days in large part. … It's more of a short-term remedy," said Hewett. "But if you look at the longer-term outcomes after microfracture, they're not very good. And this is especially apparent in the NBA. Some really high profile players in the NBA (such as Greg Oden) had microfracture and did not do well.

"If you look at the data … if you have a relatively small lesion, and you want to get the player back relatively quickly, it's an OK short-term solution."

Texans OLB Jadeveon Clowney still can't put weight on his knee after undergoing microfracture surgery on December 8.

Clowney has already undergone three surgeries as a pro, including a knee scope before the microfracture and sports hernia surgery last June. During the season, Clowney tore his lateral meniscus and suffered "articular cartilage damage." Said GM Rick Smith, "That surgery requires a pretty significant amount of time that you are not weight bearing, and then you kind of gotta work yourself back to it. He's been diligent in his rehab." Clowney is a question mark for 2015 training camp.

2015 NFL Combine- ThursdayExcerpt:

I’ve spoken with a number of people since the Senior Bowl who have openly said there is serious concern over Jadeveon Clowney’s future. A variety of opinions have come from numerous sources, including those close to the Texans. I’ve heard everything from don’t expect much from Clowney in 2015 to the belief he may struggle to ever regain full health from the microfracture surgery. The reasoning for the latter is Clowney underwent the procedure at an early age.

Is it going to hurt him like it hurt Kelce?

Texans GM Rick Smith said he's hopeful OLB Jadeveon Clowney (knee surgery) will be ready for Week 1.

Clowney underwent microfracture surgery on Dec. 8. The recovery process is going well and he's expected to make a full recovery, but the Texans certainly won't rush him. The No. 1 overall pick in last year's draft had zero sacks in four games as a rookie.

NFL draft insider Tony Pauline has heard from a "number of people" that there is "serious concern" about Texans OLB Jadeveon Clowney's surgically repaired knee.

Pauline cites "numerous sources, including those close to the Texans" when cautioning to "not expect much" from Clowney in 2015. "He may struggle to ever regain full health from the microfracture surgery," Pauline writes. As of late January, Clowney could bear no weight on his knee. He also had the knee scoped before his microfracture, in addition to sports hernia surgery last June. Clowney appeared in only four games as a rookie.

So in just over an hour, Rotoworld reported that his recovery is a)going well and is expected to make a full recovery and b)he may struggle to ever regain full health.

Oof.

Clowney has done right things: Texans GM Rick Smith talked a lot about being proud of various players, and one was Jadeveon Clowney, the first overall pick last year who had microfracture surgery in December after suffering a lateral meniscus tear and articular cartilage damage. Smith said he's been pleased with Clowney's approach to what will be a difficult rehab. "I do think that he can be a very impactful player and reach his potential," Smith said. Said Houston coach Bill O'Brien: "The first six weeks were very important because he couldn't put any weight on the knee. He had to be really disciplined in whatever he could do rehabwise. He had to be very disciplined doing that, and he was." -- Tania Ganguli

"Hopefully he'll be able to get out on the field sometime during training camp," head coach Bill O'Brien said in a Monday morning NFL Network interview with Tiffany Blackmon. "Maybe at the beginning of training camp if he continues to work at the pace that he's been working."

"Our team needs him, and he knows that. He's working hard to get back out there," O'Brien said.

"He's in there every day," O'Brien said. "He's putting in a lot of time in our training room with our trainers and our doctors."

Rotoworld:

Texans OLB Jadeveon Clowney (knee) confirmed he hasn't had any setbacks.
Clowney is expected to miss Houston's entire offseason program recovering from microfracture surgery. He should be ready at some point in training camp, but remains questionable for Week 1. The first-overall pick in last year's draft, Clowney appeared in just four games as a rookie.

Over under on how many games he plays this year?

+/- 6

I'll take the under.
How many did you think Kelce would play at this time last year?
Kelce likely wasn't born with a mangina.
Just to add to that, all the reports this time last year were that Kelce would be full-go for the start of training camp, not "hopeful" for "week one."

So mangina or not, just based on the blurbs coming from the people around the respective teams, it looks like Kelce was a couple months ahead. Worse, though, is that Kelce's role didn't specifically require him to be significantly more explosive in his movement than the other guys on the field; Clowney's does.
