North Korea thread (7 Viewers)

The one thing we needed to do right in the last 30 years - nuclear nonproliferation.  And we ####ed it up bigtime.

N. Korea resumes radio broadcast of encrypted numbers

SEOUL, April 9 (Yonhap) -- North Korea on Sunday resumed its radio broadcast of mysterious random numbers, which is believed to be coded orders to its spies outside of the country.

"From now on, we announce tasks of mechanical engineering review for the Unit 21 expedition members of the remote education university," North Korea's state-run Pyongyang Radio said at 12:15 a.m.

"Number 69 on page 602, number 79 on page 133, number 18 on page 216," the broadcast said. A total of 70 sets of such five-digit numbers were read out twice.

Pyongyang Radio last aired a similar broadcast on March 24.

It was the 31st such broadcast since the North resumed the Cold-War era spycraft on June 24 last year amid escalating inter-Korean tensions. It suspended such clandestine broadcasts in 2000.

North Korea may have tested new technology in latest missile

...

Initial U.S. and South Korean assessments had indicated it was an advanced KN-15 medium-range missile, whose first known test by North Korea was in February. But unlike the KN-15, which uses solid fuel, the missile fired Wednesday used liquid fuel and was fired from a fixed location, rather than a mobile launcher, the official said.

The South Korean military said the missile was fired from land near the east coast city of Sinpo and flew only about 60 kilometers (40 miles).
... Analysts say North Korea might also time nuclear and long-range rocket tests to the April 15 birthday of North Korea founder Kim Il Sung, the late grandfather of current leader Kim Jong Un. ...

What Happens When North Korea Tests a Missile That Could Reach the U.S.?

North Korea, frequently the butt of jokes and memes for being backwards, is preparing to test an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM). Such a missile, unlike the medium-range variety the country tested off its east coast on Monday, is one that could possibly deliver a warhead to the American mainland. The possibility is no joke, and it is going to be one of several painful discussions that Presidents Donald Trump and Xi Jinping need to have at their upcoming summit in Florida. According to Thae Yong Ho, a recent North Korean defector who had served in the country’s embassy in the U.K., Kim Jong Un wants a test in 2017 or early 2018.

This test will likely fail. Launching an ICBM successfully is hard, and there are many points where failure can occur. The regime spent much of 2016 conducting component tests and rolling out propaganda images and video to promote its capability. While North Korea is notorious for faking images of its weapons programs, there were several images that stood out as probably true.

...

The KN-08 ICBM has been paraded in Pyongyang since 2012. At first, open-source analysts found its crude workmanship unconvincing, but by 2016 North Korea demonstrated that not only is it a real ICBM, but its engine is using a more energetic fuel than previously thought. The translucent pinky-purple color of the flames seen in photos of the April 2016 engine test at Sohae are a hallmark of a fuel-oxidizer combination energetic enough to make a target not only out of the West coast of the U.S., but also Washington, DC.

The KN-14, paraded in October 2015, is a variant. It is less frequently photographed, but if it has the same engine, it can probably put at least Chicago at risk, and may even be more accurate than the KN-08.

-@POTUS has just spoken on phone with @AbeShinzo. Call lasted about 40 minutes.
The call comes a day after @POTUS spoke to #ROK acting prime minister and as @USNavy moves more vessels towards the Korean Peninsula.
On phone @AbeShinzo and @POTUS agree on close coordination on #DPRK, Japanese officials say. No info yet from @WhiteHouse about the call.

In Tokyo @AbeShinzo tells reporters he and @POTUS "completely agreed" on the importance of solidarity about #DPRK among Japan, US & #ROK

In Tokyo @AbeShinzo says he told @POTUS that #Japan is watching closely how #China responds to pressuring #DPRK on missiles and nukes.
This was the second @POTUS-@AbeShinzo extended phone conversation within four days. Highly unusual.

Does this guy just want to die? What's his end game? I know he is a sociopath but he's lived outside that rathole; he has to know going to the mattresses with Japan and the US is instant   death.

His endgame is to continue to live in material wealth while his people suffer, while looking like a tough guy so his poor subjects think they're suffering for a reason.  In other words, same as his middle game and his opening.

He quite likely has no intention of seriously provoking anything.  My guess is that the buildup of U.S. forces in the region (those carrier battle groups come in handy) is making him reconsider shooting off his mouth/missiles any time soon.  He's unlucky (or perhaps actually lucky, given that it gives him an excuse to back down and he can tell his completely isolated people whatever he wants) that the "president" of the U.S. needs external distractions right now.

There is only one man who can save us right now. He has been a friend of both President Trump and the North Korean leader. A guy who understands both of them quite well. We desperately need his diplomatic skills.

Dennis Rodman, where are you?

dude how come I didn't know KFC was open on XMAS?
Because you don't live in Japan?
Colonel Sanders was most likely our nation's most underappreciated covert foreign propaganda specialist evah!

Many think he earned the rank of Colonel from the Kentucky Colonel's...#FakeNews

While he was a KY Col, that was just a convenient cover.

I'd like to reveal more of his operations, but I'm gagged at the moment. (Take that as you will)

When I was in Japan  (maybe '97 or '98) there was a KFC on just about every block. My favorite was the one with not one, not two, but three life size Col. Sanders mannequins on the balcony over the entrance.

So I'm a dummy. I like following these threads because I learn quite a bit from you guys. Can someone explain why this is a thing? Is KJU just flexing too much right now? Is Donald? Is this just yet another military dry hump? TIA

One can never be too sure. He's continued to build up the military and may at some point want to use it. Most likely he's trying to look tough for his people, raise NK morale, paint the US as a fading, desperate imperialistic power and continue create just enough resistance to keep his long range missle and nuke program going.

Traditionally when NK tests new military capabilities we give them aid in order to stop working on advancing their military capabilities.

I don't think that strategy will work with the current USA president.

Well, China deployed 150,000 troops to the North Korean border, so... maybe?

We have options for almost every military action you can think of. Never hurts to be prepared.
Do you gather that's what's being requested?  You think Trump is saying "we have options for everything except North Korea, so make some happen"?  Because yes, I'd imagine we do already have these scenarios.  Sounds like he wants them to consider.

I'm guessing his troops are hungry so he can trade a slowdown in his weapons development for food.

Can't just grab a snickers when you're feeling ornery over there.  No snickers to be found.

Also China has moved 150k soldiers and medical supplies to the NK border in anticipation of a US attack.

per some twitter, not confirmed
