Thoughts on Brandon Marshall (1 Viewer)

Bears cut Santonio Holmes today. Probably more due to the fact that Holmes is unproductive and probably a cancer in the clubhouse, but also may mean that Marshall's ankle is OK.
And that they're ready to activate that rookie 2nd year WR Marquess Wilson who broke his collarbone at the beginning oh the year.

Wilson’s return nears: When asked about waiving Santonio Holmes, Kromer referred to Marquess Wilson being back at practice. The Bears still have that open roster spot, should they decide to activate Wilson before Sunday.

“He's got great body control, but he can still go up and get the ball, so he's a little bit of a different type of guy, which we kind of need,” said Jay Cutler.

Anyone hear anything on Marshall's Friday practice participation - haven't seen anything on Rotoworld or via Google search.

Didn't look like the ankle bothered him at all. I was hoping coming out of the bye he would start turning it around. That's 200yds+ and 3TDs the last 2 weeks.

Rotoworld:

Brandon Marshall caught 6-of-11 targets for 42 yards in Chicago's Week 13 loss to the Lions.

It was a disappointing day for Marshall, who appeared to tweak something early, and committed two drops. He was the target on Jay Cutler's first interception. With 75 percent of the season now in the books, Marshall is on pace for just 77/880/11. Both the yards and catches would be his fewest since his rookie year in 2006.

Anything but a WR1 this year. Totally not living up to his ADP even with the couple of big games he had recently. Way too many clunkers interspersed with the good ones. He'll have won you one week only to cost you another.

The continued emergence of Jeffrey has hurt him. No need for Jay to just keep forcing it to BM when he's got an equally (if not more) talented guy opposite.

I don't see why he isn't on everyone's bust list for 2014.
He should definitely be near the top now.
I don't know if near the top. He's had 3-4 huge games. However, he's been a roller coaster with a few nearly worthless games mixed in there. Definitely deserves to be on the bust list but hasn't flamed out completely like Martin or Zac Stacy or even as badly as Andre Johnson, who is not even the highest scoring WR named Andre (that would be A. Holmes).

At least, his playoff Schedule is not that bad ( Boys, Saints Lions). But right now, he's no more than a low end wr2 ....

He is so streaky he's hard to trust. Just a few weeks back he put up back to back 28 point games. The duds are tough to swallow for sure. He reminds me of the Vincent Jackson of old though not as extreme (3, 3, 39).

glad i had the stones to bench him tonight. hope he's alright tho. will make the decision to keep him riding the pine easier going forward.

I'm already starting Cutler and Jeffery in one league. If I move on (which I totally expect) would it be insane to pick up Wilson and start all 3 of them if Marshall is indeed gone for the season? For full disclosure, he would be starting over either Benjamin at WR3 or F-Jax at a flex.

Can't imagine they'd have him to come back for weeks 16 and 17 in meaningless games. Thanks for playing, Brandon.

Per Shefty he said he's out for the season, but didn't specifically say the team put him on IR. Saw this on Schefter's Facebook feed, not on his Twitter account:

Bears WR Brandon Marshall remains hospitalized with 2 broken ribs and a collapsed lung that doctors successfully treated, per source. Marshall is out for season.

Your "stones" would have shriveled up if he hadn't gotten hurt. He would have had a big night.

Nice try, though.
Ya, terrible to brag about benching him. He would have been huge tonight.
whatever...

not bragging, just benched him after the past 3 weeks of under performing (not to mention he only had maybe, what, 4 or 5 weeks of the "regular" FF season that were WR1'ish). The rest was a disappointment. He wasn't a complete waste of roster space this year (if he wasn't on your bench for those 4 or 5 weeks), but certainly a "bust" considering where he was drafted. not blaming him specifically. injuries + cutler not having a very good season + the bears D...

week one of the playoffs = time to make tough decisions w/ starting lineups. jeffery has been killing it over the past month while BM was putting up < 50 yds / game. not to mention bennett getting a lot of the looks.

yea, he was looking good last night prior to getting crushed in the back, and could have gone on to have a good game. maybe.

I do hope he recovers well. collapsed lung + broken ribs is serious stuff. I just won't be drafting him next season, unless it's in the 4th round. it seems like the NFL DC's have figured Testman and his shiny new offense out already.

Rotoworld:

Bears placed WR Brandon Marshall on injured reserve with fractured ribs and a collapsed lung, ending his season.
This was an expected move. Marshall, 31 in March, will return to the Bears in 2015 after GM Phil Emery signed him to a new four-year, $39.3 million deal last May. He appears to have been passed by Alshon Jeffery as Chicago's top receiver, but will be a solid bounce-back target as a WR2 in fantasy next year.

Rotoworld:

ESPN Chicago's Michael C. Wright writes that "nobody knows" whether Brandon Marshall will be back with the Bears in 2015.

The Bears signed Marshall to a new four-year, $39 million deal last May, but the regime that handed him that extension is gone. Marshall is still a fine player and worth the money, but there's some question whether he'll be able to coexist with Chicago's new staff. OC Adam Gase was the Broncos' WRs coach when Mike Shanahan banished Marshall from Denver. Marshall also had a 2014 falling out with Jay Cutler. Per the website OverTheCap.com, the Bears could save $3.95 million in cap space by cutting Marshall this offseason.

OverTheCap would be wrong since 2015 is fully guaranteed according to Spotrac.

If on the roster the 3rd day of the league year. Spotrac isn't correct until then.

Gotcha.

What the motive for cutting Marshall with just a $7.5M salary for 2015 and the Bears nearly $30M under the cap - is he that much of a distraction?

Rotoworld:

Brandon Marshall recently sat down with new coach John Fox and GM Ryan Pace to discuss his future with the Bears, but was "assured nothing."
Most expect Marshall back with Chicago in 2015, but the people closest to the situation (Marshall, Fox, and Pace) haven't come out and assured that the receiver will be back in a Bears uniform. Marshall continues to say that he wants to remain with the team. He's also openly supported the hire of OC Adam Gase.

Rotoworld:

Coach John Fox was noncommittal Wednesday when asked about Jay Cutler and Brandon Marshall's futures with the Bears.

"I don't think there's any question there's ability and talent there," Fox said of Cutler. "But there's a lot more that goes into it." Fox also hinted at reservations about Marshall's participation on HBO's in-season Inside the NFL show. Combined with the NFL's quarterback shortage, Cutler's contract still makes it likely the Bears retain him. Marshall's future is less assured because the Bears could save cap dollars by moving on. It sounds like the Bears haven't made final decisions on either player. Marshall would be more likely to get the boot.
