Seems like a lackluster group there - the ones on the edge of good will probably get overpaid.

Tigers let Veras go.

Oakland is picking up the options of Crisp and Anderson.

Yankees voiding Jeter's previous feal and giving him more $ for a one year deal.

Why would the yankees sign jeter to a $12m deal when he had a player option for $9.5m. I understand hes derek jeter but he player 17 games

For some reason I thought the Yankees might let Jeter walk so that he could latch on with a contender. Guess not.

I believe the new deal means Jeter is a free agent after the year instead of being locked up. Slightly more short term money for greater long term flexibility.

Good for him. I remember him coming over for Blanton, then he got lost in the system obviously and wound up with Chicago (as did Matthew Spencer, who also wound up with the Cubs and who is also now out of baseball). Not the best haul.

I think Cano re-signing with NY is inevitable, it'll be interesting to see how and if Roc Nation/CAA can gain any leverage whatsoever with the Doyers signing a 2B already. Beltran to NY also makes sense.

Gammons reported earlier in the week about the terrifying possibility of the Dodgers emptying out their minor league cabinet for Price AND bidding a huge amount to get Tanaka. Although the Angels are apparently willing to deal Trumbo for Price.

The A's I'm sure consider Young and Balfour good as gone. I hoped they'd try to find a way to nab Colon again, but with most of their rotation set I'm sure it won't be too difficult to find another reclamation project. I could see Capuano.

The Haren-to-SF idea doesn't really wash me, as Sabean doesn't seem like a guy who is going to look past ERA.

ANd I doubt anyone accepts one
Granderson probably should consider it. I don't see anybody else going much above 2/$20M for him, particularly with the compensation pick involved. Outside of 2011, he just hasn't been that productive recently.

1/$14M in a friendly ballpark seems like a decent option. He still has a chance to resurrect his market value and go for one last multi-year deal next winter.

really? I thought i read chw will offer a big contract to him. I would be surprised if he gets anything less than 3/45

You're probably right but I really don't like a big contract and a compensation pick for a declining player.

Granderson's only an injury-plagued (of the non-muscular variety) away from two 40 HR seasons, he can do better than a qualifying offer I think.

No qualifying offer for Peralta. It would be terribly unsurprising if he wound up with the Cards.

Burnett seems like the most likely player to accept one. He's talked about retirement, and $14mm for his production next year is probably about right.

Liriano and Rivera win MLB comeback player of the year for their respective leagues.

D-Backs are hot on the heels of Samardjiza, who is entering his Arb 2 season.

Problem for Granderson is he'd be worth an offer higher than a qualifying offer if the draft pick compensation isn't attached, but is he worth both the money and the first rounder? He may wind up being in the same boat as Lohse last season.

Yes. 5 PM yesterday.

Only 13 players received qualifying offers. Ellsbury, Napoli, Drew, Cano, Grandy, Kuroda, Beltran, Choo, Cruz, Jiminez, McCann, Morales, Santana

Yankees have it let it be known they're willing to break the posting fee for Tanaka.

Red Sawx interested in Hudson to replace Dempster as their overpaid ####ty fifth starter. Giants like Arroyo.

Is tanaka any good? Im assuming not as good as darvish
His contract will beg to differ.

If re-signing Robinson Cano is priority No. 1 for the New York Yankees this offseason, securing the rights to Japanese starter Masahiro Tanaka is No. 1a. And they’re willing to spend more money than any team ever has bidding on a Japanese player.Sources with knowledge of the Yankees’ plans said they are “going to be bold” in bidding on the 25-year-old right-hander when the Rakuten Golden Eagles post him, likely later this month. Just how high the Yankees plan on going is unclear, but executives believe the winning bid for the rights to negotiate a contract with Tanaka will top $75 million, nearly a 50 percent premium over the posting fees for Yu Darvish and Daisuke Matsuzaka.

One of the main holdups: Nobody knows what the bidding process even looks like, as Major League Baseball and Nippon Professional Baseball continue to hash out the details of the posting system. In the past, teams have placed blind bids on players, with the highest bid winning exclusive negotiating rights and the Japanese team pocketing the entirety of the bid. Proposals for a new system from MLB seek to limit the money going to Japan and have met resistance from teams that use monster posting fees to recapitalize.

Tanaka went 24-0 with a 1.27 ERA this season, losing his first game during a 160-pitch outing in the Japan Series but coming back the next day to throw the final 15 pitches in a championship-clinching Rakuten victory. He especially appeals to the Yankees because the posting fee does not count against teams’ luxury-tax figures, and the Yankees are aiming to dip below a $189 million payroll to reset their tax rate.

Even for AAAA, 24-0 is pretty good.

Rockies beat writer Troy Renck compared Tanaka to Anibal Sanchez. He quoted a scout that said "Great fastball command, good deception, great strikeout pitches with fastball, forkball and slider. ... Finds extra gear with runners on base."

The NPB posting fee is real money but it doesn't count in luxury tax calculations

I don't think there's any doubt he'll get more than Darvish, but teams are flooded with cash right now. It's a new age. The White Sox are going to seem like geniuses for that Abreu contract when all is said and done.
