Andrew Luck..... Love fest inside.... (3 Viewers)

If you want to hear Colts GM Ballard talk about Lucks injury directly here is an interview he did with former Colts punter Pat Mcafee.

Sounds like they didn’t know what it was and it was some type of compound problem.

Andrew Luck was recorded warming up prior to Indianapolis' Week 2 preseason game against the Browns.

The full video can be seen in the link below. It's just warm-ups, but it's still a positive sign considering Colts GM Chris Ballard said Luck's high-ankle sprain recently spread and became a calf injury. He won't play in the preseason, but there's still "guarded optimism" he'll be ready for Week 1 (as first reported by ESPN's Chris Mortensen). Luck is currently being drafted as the No. 4 quarterback in fantasy, which is beginning to look more and more plausible given his extensive workouts.

Colts coach Frank Reich today: QB Andrew Luck will not practice this week. The issue remains a matter of "full speed movement vs. pain threshold."

Team, ideally, will want to know his status for Week 1 next Monday. That'll be 13 days shy of the season opener.

Andrew Luck (ankle) will not practice this week.

It's partially a side-to-side movement issue and partially a pain tolerance issue. Either way, it's not a great sign for his Week 1 outlook. The Colts have made it clear that they want their quarterback starter to be announced well before the season opener, so Luck will need to progress quickly. Expecting that to happen after months of lingering problems is optimistic, but they haven't ruled him out yet. If Luck is out, all Colts will obviously need to be downgraded even if Jacoby Brissett is a capable backup.

Literal shock o the season. Don't think anything will beat this in NFL headlines this year. JFC this is huge news. As a big Luck fan its really disappointing. Long run Colts made the right choice taking him over RG3 though

I mean....holy ####. Has there ever been a retirement this high profile in NFL history? He's had a lot of injuries, but not concussions. He's a youngish blue chip franchise QB. This has never happened, right?

This is way bigger than Calvin or Barry retiring "early".

Calvin Johnson and Barry Sanders come to mind

Barry Sanders and MegaTron for sure

None of these compare to a 29 year old $100M franchise QB though
It's a really limited pool, so in that regard you're right. Calvin was slightly more surprising, other than that one guy who called it here. (Just due to the current injury which was sounding odd)

Barry the first day of camp (via fax from London), Calvin before the draft

Trying to think of another player seemingly in his prime and hanging it up just weeks before the season
Did Chris Borland of the 49ers do it in Camp? I know he wasn't a "known" player but he seemed like a guy who was climbing that latter to be. Could be wrong. Retied about 2 or so yrs into his career and said the concussion issues around the league were a concern ad why he retired

ESPN's Adam Schefter reports that Andrew Luck has informed the Colts he is retiring from the NFL.

Per Schefter, Luck is "mentally worn down" and has already informed owner Jim Irsay of his intentions. It's the most stunning NFL news of the decade. Two years removed from a lost season to a shoulder injury, Luck had not practiced all summer as he dealt with a mysterious calf/ankle issue. It is perfectly reasonable to wonder if that was a ruse for a player struggling with his NFL future. Viewed as a once-in-a-decade type prospect when he entered the league out of Stanford in 2012, Luck produced a 2014-15 AFC Championship Game appearance and a pair of 39-touchdown campaigns. He took a massive beating in the process, playing behind shaky offensive lines while being cavalier with his body. Jacoby Brissett will now be under center Week 1. Although he is arguably the best backup in the league, Brissett will likely be a bottom-tier starter.
That's an interesting take... not buying it unless some more comes out though.

Barry was still playing well but he was still a 30 year old RB coming off the least efficient season of his career.

Megatron more surprising but still a big difference in a 30 year old WR vs. a 30 year old QB.

Luck is 29 he's also forfeiting 58M once retired

Horrible fans. The guy sacrificed his body for 7 years for the same ####ty franchise that got Peyton's neck broken. And rather than half-heartedly take their money for the next half decade while rehabbing constantly like he could have, he ends it like few have the balls to do. His passion waned so he stopped taking their money.

Scumbag move to boo a guy like that. Boo the owner and GMs who built the teams that got your last two franchise QBs killed.

Give the fans time to process - sure. Tell fans 1 week before the season that their QB they've counted on in the prime of his career is quitting - yea, they'll be pissed.

Cool. They'll regret that the last time he was in that stadium they made asses of themselves, but at least they got to...have a tantrum for a couple minutes? Guess that helps.

  Just saying I get why they're pissed. Doesn't make them horrible fans. The guys quit on them. Yea - the Colts front office sucks for not protecting the guy with a decent OL. Yea, football is a violent sport, I get why people retire early.  But a week before the season - I'd be pissed to. It's ok.

Agree to disagree. This is really not that different than if he'd been carted off the field with a career-ending injury and was boo'ed on his way out because fans thought he'd be healthy.

They need to be pissed at Irsay and Grigson, and he should have left the field for the last time with respectful applause. Sadness makes sense. Not anger.

Don't blame them.  They purchase tickets or the upcoming year based on Luck playing, now they are getting a lesser product because of Luck's decision.

Injuries ended his career, essentially. Would you feel this same way if you saw him snap his leg in half recently? No, because that would be ridiculous and entitled.

Among QBs with > 2000 passing attempts, 2012-2018:

  • Completion percentage: #20 (just behind E.Manning)
  • TD% #7 (just behind P.Rivers)
  • INT% #14 (just behind J.Flacco)
  • Passer rating #20 (just behind E.Manning)
  • ANY/A #17 (just behind C.Palmer)
Bummer for Indy that he's quitting but it's not like he was the Second Coming that everyone expected him to be, anyway.
