***Detroit Tigers thread: 1st pick yet again, this is not fun*** (2 Viewers)

good to see JV having a good outing last night, he is the key to the tigers post season run
Why is he the key? Even if he falters, the Tigers still have 4 very good pitchers. I would think they can make a long run (and even win it all) regardless of how Verlander pitches.
But no ONE on the tiger pitching staff has the playoff or major league experience of JV. In the past five years JV has pitched more innings then any pitcher in the AL. The tigers go as far as JV and Miggy take then in the playoffs. Experience beats good any day

Sorry but there is so much wrong with your last statement. I'll take talent over experience any day of the week. With that said, JV is both talented and experienced. It's just that the Tigers have several options if he falters. I don't think any other team has that type of depth in the rotation. That's why I don't think any one guy on that team is the "key" to success.

Ricky just mowed them down tonight, not a bad #5 starter.

Holy nonsense Batman!

Porcello solid enough again as he improves his team-leading ERA. Impressive!! And the offense scores in every inning. Nice.

JDM started in LF, Raj in CF. When Carrera came in as a defensive replacement for Hunter, Davis went to left and Martinez swapped corners

GAME NOTES

-- Jorge De La Rosa's start this afternoon at Comerica Park marks the Rockies' 19th straight start by a left-handed pitcher. The streak is the fourth longest by any team since 1914. The record is 20.

-- Sanchez has gotten excellent run support lately. The Tigers have had a seven-run inning in two of Sanchez's last three starts.

-- De La Rosa has not given up more than three earned runs in his last five starts.

-- In his last two starts in the leadoff spot since the Tigers traded Austin Jackson, Rajai Davis has three runs, five hits and three RBI.

-- Miguel Cabrera has a .500 career average versus Jorge De La Rosa.

-- The Tigers have a 101-57 record in interleague play since 2006.

-- Cabrera's home run last night versus the Rockies was his 244th with the Tigers, tying him for sixth place on the club's all-time list with Lou Whitaker. It also gave him at least one hit in 22 of his last 23 games vs. Colorado.

-- Cabrera's homer last night traveled 445 feet, according to ESPN Facts and Info, and was the longest at Comerica Park this season.

Watched the Conneticut Tigers twice this weekend. 7th round pick from South Carolina Joey Pankake (3B/SS) looks pretty solid.

DOMINANT performance from Anibal today. Wow.

Serious Q - does Soria have even one swinging strike in his four appearances for the D so far? On the plus side, lowered his ERA to 16.88 today.

DOMINANT performance from Anibal today. Wow.
Lowered his WHIP to 1.02, I believe. This could turn into an interesting, mostly-friendly competition for the post-season pitching line-up.
The Rockies have been out scored 55-103 in their last 20 games* (2-18 in that span). Nice sweep and 3 VG QS. Looking forward to seeing them live this week.ETA: *last 20 [road] games

Going to see the Mud Hens play today. Anybody in particular to watch?
McCann and Fields the only ones of interest in the field.
Fields looked bad at the plate and his season numbers are horrible. McCann did not play. Worth did not do much. Perez looked OK at SS, but was somewhat lackadaisical on one ball which was an infield hit. Pina has good potential behind the plate. They hit Krol pretty hard. Whelan collected his 19th save and has an ERA of 1.95. His stuff did not look that great, but he has been effective this year.

Glad to see the Tigers found someone they can handle. This team should be winning almost every series, but they continue to struggle. The Tigers should be about 15 games up, but will probably pull the same stuff they have been pulling the last few seasons and let the mediocre teams hang in the race. They are lucky it has not bitten them in the #### yet.

Fields looked bad at the plate and his season numbers are horrible.
He had an .800 OPS at Erie last year and is one of the few guys in Toledo with some chance of being an every day player. That team is loaded with crap. Pina has been released by almost every team in baseball, and Whelan was in the Granderson trade and has bounced around lately.

He's always been a high K guy but he has also always been a high BB guy. He was really bad the past two seasons, but his walks are way down this year and he has yet to yield a homer. Seems like there are worse options than him currently on the big club.

3 CYA winners in a row [starting the first three at the Stadium]. Of course, we're also looking at a team with zero (0) pitchers with an ERA under 3.00 (min 20 innings).

Key stretch as the Tigers play 24 of the next 32 on the road. Then again, they have outstanding away from Comerica YTD.

True, but we've got 4 of the top 18 in ERA (bunched at #14-18), 4 of the top 15 in WHIP, 4 of the top 15 in innings pitched.

So none of them are very good, obviously, but they're all we've got and we'll have to find a way to make the postseason with this rag-tag group.

The Tigers kick off a four game series against the New York Yankees at Yankee Stadium. Max Scherzer and Brandon McCarthy are tonight's starting pitchers.

Detroit Tigers (61-47) at New York Yankees (57-53)Time/Place: 7:05 p.m., Yankee Stadium

ESPN, MLB.TV

Pitching Matchup: RHP Max Scherzer (13-3, 3.27 ERA) vs. RHP Brandon McCarthy(6-10, 4.56 ERA)

Pitcher GS IP K/9 BB/9 HR/9 WHIP FIP SIERA fWAR Scherzer 22 146.0 10.29 2.53 0.86 1.17 3.00 2.98 3.5 McCarthy 22 134.1 7.57 1.61 1.14 1.36 3.68 3.08 1.7 Brandon McCarthy made 18 starts for the Arizona Diamondbacks this season, allowing a 5.01 ERA and a 1.38 WHIP in 109 2/3 innings. Based on these numbers, general manager Kevin Towers' decision to trade McCarthy to the Yankees in exchange for lefty Vidal Nuno seems like a good idea, correct? Not if you look deeper. Despite the ugly ERA, McCarthy held opponents to a respectable 3.82 FIP and a 4.65 strikeout-to-walk ratio, his best since the 2011 season. The strikeout rate itself is the highest of McCarthy's career, and his elevated home run rate -- which tends to happen in Arizona -- kept his FIP as high as it was. His 2.91 xFIP with the Diamondbacks (it's 2.96 for the entire season) ranks 10th in all of baseball, and his 3.08 SIERA ranks 13th.

Now in New York, McCarthy's results are finally starting to match his stellar peripherals. He is 3-0 with a 2.55 ERA in his first four starts, all Yankee victories. He has also tallied 20 strikeouts to just four walks in 24 2/3 innings, good enough for a 3.06 FIP. How good is this? Teammate Masahiro Tanaka ranks 20th among qualified pitchers with a 3.07 FIP. Unfortunately for baseball fans everywhere, McCarthy also leads Tanaka in healthy UCLs, 2 to 1.

While he has done a great job of limiting walks throughout his career, McCarthy still allows plenty of baserunners. Even during his short-but-dominant stretch in a Yankees uniform, he has given up 28 hits in 24 2/3 innings. His change in repertoire a few years back -- he relies heavily on a two-seam fastball now -- left him vulnerable to the BABIP gods, and they have gotten their vengeance this season. He allowed a .347 BABIP with the Diamondbacks, and things haven't improved much (.333) in New York. However, his .251 BABIP on ground balls is right around the league average.

Don't look now, but Max Scherzer is leading the American League in wins again. It took him a few more starts to get to the top of the list this season, but his recent performance has led to a swift ascent up the rankings. Scherzer went 4-0 with a 2.08 ERA and a 3.03 FIP in July, leading the Tigers to a 4-1 record in games that he started. It was a huge improvement from June, when he allowed a 4.81 ERA and an opposing batting average of .286. In his last start, he dominated the Chicago White Sox for seven innings, picking up his fourth win of the season at their expense.

Hitter to fear: Jacoby Ellsbury (.462/.611/.769 in 18 plate appearances)

Hitter to fail: Brett Gardner (.000/.125/.000 in 16 plate appearances)

With numbers like those, it's safe to say that Jacoby Ellsbury owns Max Scherzer. Ellsbury's 1.380 OPS ranks eighth among players with at least 10 career plate appearances against Scherzer, behind names like Jose Bautista, Shin-Soo Choo, and Yoenis Cespedes (your move, Billy Beane). Ellsbury is also one of two Yankees with an OPS above .700 against Scherzer, the other being Derek Jeter at .701. The rest? Well, it's not pretty. Brett Gardner's .125 OPS is entire thanks to two walks in 16 plate appearances, while the newest Yankee -- shortstop Stephen Drew -- has just three hits in 19 at-bats. Catcher Brian McCann is also hitless in nine plate appearances against Scherzer, but has drawn four walks.

Of note on the other side of the ball: Miguel Cabrera is hitting .417/.493/.967 with 10 home runs in 71 career plate appearances at the new Yankee Stadium.

OutlookWith Masahiro Tanaka on the disabled list, McCarthy might be the toughest pitching matchup that the Tigers will face in this series. His peripheral numbers have been solid all season long, and he has taken his game to another level since arriving in the Bronx. McCarthy will need to be on top of his game tonight, because this is not the Yankees offense we've become accustomed to over the years. Their .717 home OPS ranks eighth in the American League, and they have a run differential of -36 at Yankee Stadium this season. That said, Scherzer has struggled against the Yankees in his career and sports a career ERA of 5.17 at Yankee Stadium.

Looks like DD's boy Smokey played a part in the Price deal according to MLBTradeRumors.com:

  • Tigers GM Dave Dombrowski told Rosenthal that Mike Russell (a scout who covers the Rays for Detroit) and Jim Leyland advocated for acquiring David Price. Without their advice, Detroit might have passed on Price.

I'll be in the Jim Beam Suite for the next 74 hours if anyone needs me....

Here's a quick look at the next series for the Detroit Tigers:

Opponent: New York Yankees

Site: Yankee Stadium in New York

Records: Tigers, 61-47 (1st in AL Central); Yankees, 57-53 (3rd in AL East)

Schedule

Monday: RHP Max Scherzer (13-3, 3.27 ERA) vs. RHP Brandon McCarthy (6-10, 4.56 ERA), 7:05 p.m., FSD, ESPN

Tuesday: LHP David Price (11-8, 3.11 ERA) vs. RHP Hiroki Kuroda (7-7, 3.98 ERA), 7:05 p.m., FSD, MLB Network

Wednesday: RHP Justin Verlander (10-9, 4.66 ERA) vs. LHP Chris Capuano (1-2, 4.50 ERA), 7:05 p.m., FSD

Thursday: RHP Rick Porcello (13-5, 3.18 ERA) vs. RHP Shane Greene (2-1, 3.68 ERA), FSD, MLB Network

Scouting the Yankees: These are not the Yankees of old. Injuries and age have caught up with them. They don't do anything especially well. In some ways, it's impressive that they remain in the hunt for a wild-card spot in the postseason. The Yankees rank eighth in the American League in team ERA (3.89). Their starting rotation is eighth in team ERA despite the fact that it has been decimated by injuries. The Yankees have used 11 starting pitchers and 10 of those 11 have made at least four starts. CC Sabathia is out for the season with a knee issue and Masahiro Tanaka's elbow is a major concern. The Tigers will see veteran Hiroki Kuroda as well as Brandon McCarthy, who is 3-0 with a 2.55 ERA in four starts since the Yankees obtained him in a trade with the Arizona Diamondbacks. The Yankees offense ranks 11th in the American League in batting average and 12th in runs scored. The Yankees have four players (Mark Teixeira, Jacoby Ellsbury, Brett Gardner and Brian McCann) with more than 45 RBIs this season, but both Teixeira and McCann are hitting below .240. No Yankees hitter has 20 home runs.

Speaking of Old Smokey some of those reporters are lucky that Ausmus and not Leyland are fielding those after the game questions.

Instead of that puzzled look they would be getting the post game dinner spit back at them.

GAME NOTES

-- With right-handed pitcher Brandon McCarthy set to start for New York tonight, center fielder Ezequiel Carrera will make his Tigers debut in the starting lineup. It's his first start for the Tigers since being called up from Triple-A Toledo on Thursday.

-- Carrera will bat second behind leadoff hitter Ian Kinsler. Brad Ausmus said he would probably lead Kinsler off against righties when Rajai Davis doesn't play. As of now, it appears Ausmus will use Carrera and Davis in a platoon in center.

-- Don Kelly gets the start at third tonight over Nick Castellanos, who has never faced McCarthy. Ausmus is likely trying to stack his lineup with lefties against McCarthy, who has allowed left-handed hitters to bat .311 off him this year.

-- Tigers starter Max Scherzer will attempt to become the first pitcher in the majors to win 14 games tonight. Scherzer has recorded five straight winning decisions. He is 5-0 with a 2.08 ERA in his last seven starts.

-- Tigers designated hitter Victor Martinez, who has two homers in as many games, has a team-high 23 home runs. He's two shy of matching his career high, which he set in 2007 with Cleveland.

-- Yankees left fielder Brett Gardner has five home runs in six games. He hit eight all of last year, his previous career high. Gardner is 0 for 14 with five strikeouts in his career against Scherzer.

-- Today's forecast in New York City calls for mostly sunny skies with temperatures steady in the low 80s. Later tonight, there's a few clouds forecast and a stray shower or thunderstorm is possible.

He's a plus defender. This is a guy they can bring on in the 7th inning to play defense, because Rajei really doesn't belong in CF. Against righties they might be able to play him in CF and Dirks in LF.

Don Kelly should start taking balls at SS so they can cut Romine. What a waste of a roster space.

"Wow" is right. :sportscentertop10::

Avilaville: Where rallies go to die.
The catch was the highlight of the night. Saved at least a couple runs there. Kinsler had three nice plays as well (2 on DPs). Max did not have his usual command & I'm pretty amazed Ausmus got 7 out of him.

The key to the night was Avila/Suarez striking out B2B in the 2nd with the bases loaded. The Yankees bullpen got worked the night before and McCarthy was primed to get blown out. Pathetic we couldn't get at least a SF.

They are calling Suarez's injury a sprained knee. Are hopeful it will only be several days off with no DL. Will be more thoroughly evaluated today. He needs to change his slide a bit, IMO.

McCarthy has been on a roll and has largely been a victim of bad luck this season prior to his trade.

I'd read that, too. Scherzer - without his "A" game, got outdueled. Take away the great catch and the 2 DPs and it definitely would have been much worse. But still, Avila has to get his bat on the stupid ball.

Price, JV, and Porcello up next!

http://www.mlive.com/tigers/index.ssf/2014/08/report_detroit_tigers_sign_rel.html

NEW YORK -- The Detroit Tigers continue to try to improve in the bullpen. They made what appears to be a low-risk move Tuesday afternoon.

The Tigers have signed relief pitcher Jim Johnson to a minor-league deal, according to Ken Rosenthal of Foxsports.com.

Johnson had 51 saves in 2012 and 50 in 2013 while pitching for the Baltimore Orioles before being traded to the Oakland Athletics in the offseason.

Johnson fell on hard times in Oakland. He had a 7.14 ERA and just two saves in 38 games for the A's before they released him Friday. His WHIP this season is 2.058.

Johnson is 22-28 with a 3.47 ERA and 124 saves in 398 career games spanning nine seasons.

GAME NOTES

-- Newly acquired starter David Price will make his Tigers debut tonight in New York. Acquired in a blockbuster trade last Thursday, Price is 6-2 with a 3.57 ERA in 12 starts at Yankee Stadium.

-- Tigers shortstop Eugenio Suarez is out of the starting lineup, a day after leaving the game with a sprained left knee. Suarez injured his knee while attempting to steal second base in the fifth inning Monday. There's no timetable for his return.

-- With Suarez indefinitely sidelined, Andrew Romine will get the start at shortstop. Utility player Don Kelly will be the Tigers' backup shortstop while Suarez is held out.

-- Right-hander Hiroki Kuroda will start for the Yankees tonight. He gave up three runs in seven innings last Wednesday. He's 0-2 with a 3.67 ERA in four starts against the Tigers.

-- Tigers manager Brad Ausmus has elected to give Rajai Davis the start in center field over newly promoted outfielder Ezequiel Carrera, who will likely see the majority of his at-bats against right-handers.

-- Today's forecast in New York City calls for a few isolated thunderstorms and a few passing clouds. Partly cloudy skies with temperatures falling into the low to middle 70s.

We have a business partner/agent who is friends with the Yankees first baseman. Last winter he decided to treat him to a BB game at the Carrierdome. Our friend is...rather large...and cuts a distinctive figure. Someone uploaded a pic of the pair, it went viral, they had no idea this was going on for hours, my buddies & I had a blast following this from a bar in midtown. It was the greatest ####### day in the history of the innerwebs.

No single link can do this justice; I would strongly encourage you to Google "Mark Teixeira Jewish Consigliere". Mother####ing priceless.
