MVP
Jimmy Graham leads top 25 NFL free agents for 2014

By Chris Wesseling

Around the League Writer

With just two more football Sundays left in the current season, the Around The League crew is taking its first glance at the 2014 NFL free-agent market.

It's early in the offseason process. Franchise tags have yet to be discussed. There's still time for clubs to lock up young stars to long-term contracts. Many of these names will be removed from consideration by the time we compile our more extensive previews regarding upcoming NFL free agents in early March.

Our list places the highest value on ascendent players with little or no reason to expect a dropoff in production over the next few years.

Without further ado, here are Around The League's top 25 NFL free agents for 2014:

1. Jimmy Graham, New Orleans Saints tight end
2. Greg Hardy, Carolina Panthers defensive end
3. Brian Orakpo, Washington Redskins linebacker
4. Jairus Byrd, Buffalo Bills safety
5. T.J. Ward, Cleveland Browns safety
6. Alterraun Verner, Tennessee Titans cornerback
7. Branden Albert, Kansas City Chiefs left tackle
8. Michael Johnson, Cincinnati Bengals defensive end
9. Lamarr Houston, Oakland Raiders defensive end
10. Brent Grimes, Miami Dolphins cornerback
11. Eugene Monroe, Baltimore Ravens left tackle
12. Vontae Davis, Indianapolis Colts cornerback
13. Linval Joseph, New York Giants defensive tackle
14. Jason Hatcher, Dallas Cowboys defensive tackle
15. Jared Veldheer, Oakland Raiders left tackle
16. Aqib Talib, New England Patriots cornerback
17. Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie, Denver Broncos cornerback
18. Alex Mack, Cleveland Browns center
19. Eric Decker, Denver Broncos wide receiver
20. Michael Bennett, Seattle Seahawks defensive end
21. B.J. Raji, Green Bay Packers defensive tackle
22. Sam Shields, Green Bay Packers cornerback
23. Walter Thurmond, Seattle Seahawks cornerback
24. Donald Butler, San Diego Chargers linebacker
25. Randy Starks, Miami Dolphins defensive tackle

We previewed Championship Sunday and sat down with Rams star Robert Quinn in the latest "Around The League Podcast."

2014 NFL Free Agents

Excerpt:

With access to NFL Players Association data, Rotoworld can generate the most accurate free agent list on the internet. The free agents below are listed loosely in order of how we see them being valued on the open market.

Keep in mind that franchise tags will inevitably deplete the top of the market. New Orleans' Jimmy Graham is an obvious franchise tagee after a mammoth 2013 season. Browns safety T.J. Ward will receive strong franchise-tag consideration as well.

2014 free agency will commence on the afternoon of March 13.

I guess you can't make the top 25 if you are over 30 and still playing at a high level. Jared Allen and Kevin Williams are free agents.

I didn't watch much of BJ Raji last season. What happenned to him? His stats are terrible.

I didn't know that some of those QBs were still in the league, in that case I suppose Vince needs to be on that list.

That list looks terrible. I wonder if such a weak market, if Vick can sneak a bigger pay day in than we'd expect like ok if you don't pay me I'm gone, I'll let Tebow and Claussen know you're looking for a QB.

Gerhart is better than 13 IMO.

Didn't Fred Davis not get offers recently when he was a free agent so he returned to the Redskins?

Who are the Lions TEs then?

I like Andre Roberts. He could be good depth somewhere.

I'd like to see Damian Williams get a chance, he won't, but I'd like to see it.

Brian Leonard should probably be on the FB list

The system he plays in isn't stat friendly for DEs
Didn't he play in the same system last year? He turned down 8 million per season and he had 12 solo tackles.
I hope he can be had cheap and that the Vikings take a look...he is the type of "fat" guy they need in the middle.

i thought he was lousy whenever I watched the pack this year, looked slow and not as powerful. Did he get lazy? Or was he playing injured?

His time at NT vs DE has varied over the years. Additionally, his snap count per game was scaled back this year.
True...but he also lacked any disruption we have seen in the past.

Didn't help him that Pickett was old and hurting and Raji was going to see the bulk of the attention in the middle as far as an offensive line is concerned.

Just Fauria and Matt Veldman on their roster right now. Scheffler was already gone in favor of Fauria, though they'll have an interesting decision on Pettigrew. And possibly vice versa.

If Raji wants more than 8 million per season, I hope they can find a NT in the draft.

Multiple sources tell me Hakeem Nicks was fined repeatedly for being late to meetings & missing treatment. He battled thru several injuries

This, pretty much. And one of the reasons he reportedly turned down the $8/m offer was that he wanted to play more NT in a DF that played more to his strengths. If they can get a reasonable deal for him, considering the low stats, I'd love to see the Vikings grab him for their missing NT role.

Rotoworld:

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports his "understanding" is the Patriots and free agent LeGarrette Blount want to hammer out a deal.

Blount said following Sunday's AFC title game loss that he wants to re-up with New England. 27 years old, Blount should generate free agent interest, but not to the point that he prices himself out of the Patriots' range. A two- or three-year pact with limited guaranteed money could make sense. Blount still lacks any hint of passing-game value, hurting his stock.

Tom Brady is already stumping for the Patriots to re-sign free agent Julian Edelman.

Edelman, 27, set career highs in catches (105), yards (1,056), and touchdowns (6) this season, emerging as New England's best receiver both inside and out. "He had an incredible season," said Brady. "... I mean, he was one guy that was so consistent and dependable for us." Edelman is Rotoworld's No. 4 free agent receiver, behind Eric Decker, Jeremy Maclin, and Hakeem Nicks.

Starting to pray now that the Bengals sign one of the top CB's out there. I would love to see Verner, Davis or Talib in stripes next year. Anyone besides Brent Grimes. I don't see them signing any of them, but if they did, it would be someone like Grimes.

Orakpo is interesting, are the skins up against the cap? Is he damaged goods?
The thinking around here:

Orakpo thinks he should be paid as an elite OLB.

The Redskins view him as a pretty good player, but not a difference maker. The Redskins will not break the bank to re-sign him, but some other team probably will.

Does someone give up a 2nd for Joique Bell?

Some have said he could be a lead back, does he become one?

Doubt it. For a second you can have a top back in the draft without his injury history, but obviously also less proven nfl ability.

Rotoworld:

Impending free agent DT Kevin Williams wants to re-sign with the Vikings.

"I'd like to play a couple more years (with Minnesota), but that's totally up to the Vikings," Williams said. He also really wants to play for new coach Mike Zimmer. Williams will be 33 before the start of next season and likely will have to settle for a one- or two-year deal with minimal guaranteed money. He's started at least 14 games in each of his 11 seasons. The Vikings have Sharrif Floyd waiting in the wings at the three-technique defensive tackle spot.

The New Orleans Times-Picayune admits Lance Moore's future with the Saints is in question.

Moore, 30 next August, is scheduled to count $5.1 million against the 2014 salary cap. That's far too high after he posted just 457 yards and battled injuries this past season. Moore saw his role reduced considerably, as Kenny Stills emerged as a bigger playmaker at receiver. His salary isn't guaranteed.

ESPN Cleveland fully expects the Browns to release Jason Campbell.

Campbell, 32, triggered an escalator in his contract because he played 45 percent of the snaps this past season and is now due $3.25 million in 2014. Beat writer Tony Grossi believes that's far too high a price to pay for a guy who was 1-7 as a starter and complained about the cold weather. Campbell and Brandon Weeden are expected to get pink slips this offseason, while Brian Hoyer (ACL surgery) should return to join an early-round draft pick at quarterback.

ESPN Chicago believes the Bears could look to upgrade on Michael Bush at backup running back.

Bush carries a $3.85 million salary cap number for 2014 and was dreadful this past season, rushing for just 197 yards and averaging 3.1 YPC. Michael Ford might be given an opportunity to earn the No. 2 job behind Matt Forte, but we'd certainly expect the Bears to look for another running back via the draft. We'd consider Bush a near-lock to be released this offseason.

The Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel reports that "it sounds like" the Packers are interested in re-signing impending free agent James Starks.

They may be interested, but we can't really see it happening. The Packers have talented runners in Johnathan Franklin and DuJuan Harris behind Eddie Lacy and aren't going to dole out the cash it'll take to keep Starks. After a bounce-back season in 2013, Starks should have a number of suitors.

The Packers are very lucky Raji turned down that deal. He's done nothing the last 2 seasons. In 2010, he had 6.5 sacks, 29 tackles, 3 passes defensed. In 2012 and 2013 COMBINED he had 29 tackles, 0 sacks and 0 passes defensed, 0 turnover plays as well.

The Packers were 26th against the run in 2013.

Pray your team doesn't sign him to anything more than the veteran minimum, because that's about what he's worth. Low effort, little results.

The Redskins view him as a pretty good player, but not a difference maker. The Redskins will not break the bank to re-sign him, but some other team probably will.
I could see Seattle throwing money at Orakpo and having him play their LEO position replacing Chris Clemons. Seattle has issues with signing some of their own players, but they still get a free pass on Wilson for another year. Further, they can save major cap space by cutting Bryant, Clemons, and Rice. Miller will have a big cap number, but I don't think they have a good option at blocking TE. Perhaps they have a plan.

I'd put Golde Tate above Maclin, Endleman and Nicks. He is as good a receiver is also a return man and stays healthy, which I think would make him more valuable than the others.

Rotoworld:

ESPN New York expects the Jets to release Santonio Holmes.

Gang Green can save $8.25 million against the salary cap by releasing Holmes and his $10.75 million cap hit. Holmes is due a $1 million roster bonus on March 13, but we'd expect the Jets to cut ties with the soon-to-be 30-year-old before then. Once the Jets release Holmes, Mark Sanchez, and Antonio Cromartie, they'll have over $40 million in cap space. Cromartie could re-sign.

FOX Sports 910 Phoenix hints LT Branden Albert will be the Cardinals' top target in free agency.

This isn't the first time we've seen the Albert-Arizona connection; the Cardinals' official website suggested earlier in the month that the team could make a run at Albert. Kansas City and Arizona reportedly discussed a trade involving Albert at last year's draft. The Cardinals are up against the salary cap, but teams can work around that. Look for Albert to target a deal similar to what the Rams gave Jake Long last offseason -- four years and $34 million with $16 million guaranteed.

The Washington Post expects the Redskins to target a cornerback in free agency and reports the team remains high on Aqib Talib.

Talib played for current Redskins DBs coach Raheem Morris from 2008-2011 when the two were together in Tampa Bay. When new Redskins coach Jay Gruden was hired, he kept Morris on his staff. The Redskins tried to go after Talib last offseason but didn't have the money due to cap penalties. Washington is out from under that and is now about $14 million under the projected cap.

ESPN Boston doesn't consider Julian Edelman a candidate for the Patriots franchise tag.

Neither do we. Edelman isn't the lethal outside receiver that commands a fully-guaranteed one-year, $11 million contract. Beat writer Mike Reiss expects Edelman to land a deal similar to what the Patriots gave Danny Amendola last offseason -- five years and $28.5 million with $10 million guaranteed. Reiss also mentions the Browns and Texans as teams that could target Edelman in free agency. New Texans coach Bill O'Brien called plays in New England from 2009-2011. Edelman is our No. 4 free-agent wide receiver.

ESPN Chicago believes there's "simply no way" RE Julius Peppers can return to the Bears in 2014 at his existing salary.

We agree. Peppers, 34, is scheduled to earn a $13.9 million base salary and count $18.183 million against the cap. A contract extension would make little sense, so Peppers will likely have to take a drastic pay cut or be outright released. Peppers could re-sign on a much cheaper deal, but the Bears would be smart to get younger on defense. Peppers admitted he's in his decline phase.

Rotoworld:

The Miami Herald believes it "wouldn’t be surprising" if the Dolphins pursued impending free agent LeGarrette Blount.

It would be a classic Jeff Ireland move — buying high on a player who isn't exactly a projectable long-term option — and one unlikely to pay off for new GM Dennis Hickey, who was an advocate of Blount in Tampa Bay. Blount had a resurgence under coach Bill Belichick in New England this season, but would be an extremely poor fit for a team with such a power/leadership vacuum. Even were Blount to play close to his 2013 level, he's essentially a rich man's Daniel Thomas. The Dolphins need a smarter approach in free agency this offseason. Signing Blount would be a poor start.

Rotoworld:

Free agent Maurice Jones-Drew said he hasn't had any contract negotiations with the Jaguars yet.

No surprise. The Jags aren't going to make an offer until the market is set, especially with Jones-Drew overvaluing his worth. He'll turn 29 in March, has 2,135 career touches on his resume, sustained a Lisfranc fracture in 2012 and is coming off a season in which he averaged 3.43 YPC. "We haven't really talked up to this point yet," MJD said. "They want to let me go out and test the market a little bit, which I appreciate. We'll just go from there." We'd be very surprised if the rebuilding Jaguars used a significant portion of their cap space on the game's most replaceable and injury-prone position. Jones-Drew appears resigned to moving on for the twilight of his career.

Great year to be a FA WR. Guys like Nicks and Maclin (injury concerns) and Decker and Edelman (products of HoF QBs?) should get paid much better than they could have expected in a normal market.

Looks like Denver and New England could have a tough time bringing their guys back and Nicks may not suffer financially as much as he should have after a poor walk year.

For the record, I don't think Decker is solely a product of Manning and the Denver offense, but that question could have plagued him if the market had more to offer.

FWIW, I remember seeing a beat reporter outta Denver that said Decker was #1 priority to get re-signed by Denver. And that he was likely to pull in a Mike Wallace type contract. May have been Lammey. I can't remember.

Rotoworld:

Jaguars GM Dave Caldwell said Friday the only free agent he intends to "reach out to" before the market opens on March 11 is Chad Henne.

In other words, Caldwell won't even have words with Maurice Jones-Drew ahead of free agency. Henne is a backup-caliber quarterback and has proved that time and time again, but Jacksonville could retain him for a 2014 training camp battle with a rookie. If selected with the No. 3 overall pick, that rookie would surely enter the fall as the favorite to start over Henne.

Can Denver afford that? I thought they were close against the cap. With D. Thomas, Welker, J. Thomas and Tamme around, Decker could be a luxury they can't afford - especially if teams with need and cap room like Cleveland, Indy, NYJ etc. throw some money his way.

The player rep for free agent Jermichael Finley (neck surgery) told PFT Finley's doctor is "99.9 percent certain" he'll be cleared for contact in 3-4 weeks.

Finley underwent single-fusion spinal surgery on two vertebrae in November. The agent, Blake Baratz, stated immediately following the procedure that Finley "has every intention of resuming his football career." Finley will likely have to settle for a one-year contract in free agency on a "prove-it" deal after such a scary injury. He's Rotoworld's No. 3 free agent tight end, behind Jimmy Graham and Dennis Pitta. Finley turns 27 years old in March.

I think the depth at WR in the coming draft will have a major affect on the free agent market. There's a plus/minus to drafting one versus paying a free agent, but IMO I see many teams just opting to draft one instead of committing themselves to a player for big $.

Free agent snapshot: Eric Decker

By Christopher Price

When free agency begins in early March, there are a handful of players across the league who could appeal to New England. Over the next two weeks — with the understanding that the status of these players could change because of the franchise or transition tag – we’ll look at 10 possibilities for the Patriots to consider. We have to stress that these guys aren’t necessarily considered the elite of the free agent class – instead, they are players we think would be a good fit in New England. We started our series with looks at Anquan Boldin, Emmanuel Sanders and Dennis Pitta. Today, it’s Eric Decker.

ERIC DECKER

Position: Wide receiver

Age: 26 (will turn 27 on March 15)

Height: 6-foot-3

Weight: 214 pounds

The skinny: You want to get back at a conference rival for swiping your elite-level pass catcher in free agency? Swipe theirs! OK, so it wouldn’t be as easy as that, but the idea of New England inking Decker a year after the Broncos picked up Wes Welker would be interesting, to say the least. Decker — who was taken three spots before the Patriots drafted Taylor Price in 2010 — finished the 2013 season with a career-best 87 catches for 1,288 receiving yards and 11 touchdowns, and will hit the market at the perfect time, particularly if he’s able to help Denver win on Sunday. He’s durable (he hasn’t missed a game the last three years), has some positional versatility (he’s lined up at both the X and the Z while with the Broncos), and he has some value as a special teamer (he worked as a punt and kick returner relatively early in his career with the Broncos before the job was given to Trindon Holliday).

By the numbers: 63. Of Decker’s 87 catches in 2013, 63 of them went for first down, a rate of 72.4 percent and good enough for ninth in the league. Decker was also in the top 10 in receptions of 20 yards or more (19, tied for ninth) and receiving touchdowns (11, tied for eighth overall).

Why it would work: Several reasons: One, the Broncos have several expiring contracts — 17 unrestricted free agents, to be specific — and would be hard-pressed to retain them all, including Decker. (In that same vein, it appears unlikely Denver would be interested in franchising him.) And two, Decker’s background with Josh McDaniels (McDaniels was his head coach with the Broncos when he was drafted by Denver) could create a nice comfort zone for the receiver. In good cases and bad, McDaniels has brought several pass catchers with him from stops in Denver and St. Louis — Decker could be the next McDaniels import to sign with New England.

Why it might not work: Money. A distinctly lackluster class of free agent wide receivers could drive up Decker’s asking price, and right out of the Patriots’ price range.

Quote: “He did draft me, and I’m very thankful that he gave me the opportunity to be playing in the NFL, especially with such a great organization like Denver. I’ve got a lot of respect for him as a coach. He’s a brilliant mind, offensively. I’m sure, like any coach, he’s excited and he’s happy for the guys that he drafted.” — Decker, speaking this week about the impact McDaniels had on his career

Our take: It seems like something of a long-shot — after all, a guy who has had 216 catches over the last three seasons will draw plenty of interest on the open market, especially when you consider that it’ll be something of a depressed year for receivers’ contracts. Throw in the fact that the Patriots aren’t expected to have a ton of dough under the cap this spring, and it feels like Decker is a little out of their range. But Decker clearly has an affinity for McDaniels, and the Patriots offensive coordinator has managed to find a way to get many of the guys he favored at previous stops to Foxboro the last few years, a group that includes Brandon Lloyd, Michael Hoomanawanui, Daniel Fells, Danny Amendola and Greg Salas. It’ll be interesting to see that if the Patriots are going to be involved in the pursuit of Decker, how much of an influence McDaniels could have.

Rotoworld:

Owner Shad Khan and GM Dave Caldwell both confirmed at the Super Bowl Friday that Maurice Jones-Drew will be allowed to test the free agent market.

The only Jaguars free agent Caldwell wants to speak with is Chad Henne, probably to return as a draft pick's 2014 backup. Re-signing Jones-Drew is low on Jacksonville's list of offseason priorities, if it's even a goal at all. "It takes two to tango," Khan said of Jones-Drew, a career Jaguar. "Personally, I would love to see him back but it has to make sense for him. Dave has been on the record with what we want to do and that’s absolutely true."

ESPN Boston's Mike Reiss suggests Houston as a possible landing spot for free agent Julian Edelman.
Despite Edelman's breakout 105-catch 2013 season, Reiss believes the Patriots will be unwilling to pay him Danny Amendola money (five years, $28.5 million). "The Patriots could absorb it but I think they would ultimately decide not to," writes Reiss. Ex-Patriots OC and WRs coach Bill O'Brien is now the Texans' head coach. With Houston, Edelman could round out an awfully nice three-receiver package alongside Andre Johnson and DeAndre Hopkins.

ESPN's Adam Schefter reported on Sunday Countdown that the Jets and Bucs are both "expected to have some level of interest" in free agent Michael Vick.
Vick's old offensive coordinator in Philly, Marty Mornhinweg, is entering his second year as the Jets' OC. The Bucs recently hired Lovie Smith as head coach and could pursue competition for holdover sophomore Mike Glennon. Both clubs have salary cap room to spend and young quarterbacks on their current rosters who've yet to establish themselves in the league. Vick turns 34 in June.

No way the broncos sign decker to Wallace numbers. They aren't that dumb. The Thomas brothers drive the receiving corp and deserve the money.

After speaking to coach Marc Trestman, ESPN's Chris Mortensen confirmed on Sunday Countdown that the Bears "would love to have" free agent Josh McCown back.
McCown has mutually expressed his interest in re-signing with Chicago. Despite turning 35 before next season, McCown ostensibly has no intent to try parlaying his productive 2013 campaign into a 2014 starting job. The Bears should be able to retain McCown affordably, as he sounds amenable to a hometown discount. We could envision a three-year, $10 million commitment.

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports the Broncos plan to let Eric Decker test the free agent market in March.
In other words, they won't be re-signing him ahead of March 11. Per RapSheet, the Broncos "view (Decker) as a No. 2," and with both Demaryius and Julius Thomas entering contract years, Denver isn't willing to commit No. 1-receiver money to Decker. The team's "hope" is reportedly that Decker will receive his best offer and give the Broncos a chance to match. Ultimately, we expect Decker to follow the money. He's the top wideout eligible to hit the open market.
