John Oliver is the best thing on TV. (1 Viewer)

He barely scratched the surface with shoddy medical examiners. Whole segment could be done on just one or two of them.

I would really like to see him hit the state of forensic science. Much of it is junk science yet it's still allowed in court. For instance matching a bullet to a box of bullets is meaningless. The bullet will match any other bullet made in that batch, 1000s, and will be close enough to likely match most bullets made in the same factory, millions, and yet people are serving long sentences based on this one piece of physical evidence. Forensic bite marks are proven to be extremely unreliable to the point they are useless and yet they are used to place people directly involved in a crime. Again often the only direct evidence and people are doing time because of junk science. The list goes on.

Sadly it’s the just about the best news program in the country and it only gets 30 minutes a week.

Oliver did an episode on forensic science in 2017

Obviously it just scratches the surface but that's to be expected of a segment that's just 19 minutes long.

My wife and I catch it every week he's on. She is more knowledgable than me medically and commented the same.....Oliver prolly just scratched the surface on the inadequacies of that profession and how its dealt with legally & politically. See below for further comments.

Yes, 100% agree. Finishing up the sixth season I doubt it'll get expanded. Hope I'm wrong.

Good show but I wish he would have spent some more time explaining why "High Crimes And Misdemeanors" has an open definition.
Watching the segment was worth it just for the joke about Trump thinking he could murder someone but would need to be caught publicly urinating too to meet the High Crimes and Misdemeanor clause.  I had not seen that clip of him saying the "And, not with or 'or'" part.  :lmao:

Bias in Medicine

I'm sure people who watch this will understand this story is true. I'm sure of it. However, if immigrants go to a hospital, I'm sure those same people will want to call ICE for every immigrant... just to be sure.

It’s hilarious but I missed how it started. Did he just randomly single them out or did something happen?

good show last Sunday.  Afghanistan translators and EMS services were both good stories
Yeah. I was hoping he mentioned the Afghan translators. I was remembering his piece from years ago when reading some of the recent news where the admin is trying to get some of them out.

Last night's episode dove directly into my world and discussed a situation I was involved in. This was well done on a very difficult issue.

You're a sex worker?

ETA: I thought you're a lawyer

Also, I thought it was spot on. Decriminalization is the best path forward. DC has monkeyed with the idea a couple of times, but the bills die in committee every time.

On thing that episode made me think of... why aren't there "make your own porno" businesses, that are basically brothels circumventing the law by turning prostitution into constitutionally protected "art."

Lot of folks do this with OnlyFans now.

I am. I was directly involved in exposing one of these situations mentioned in the episode. Surprisingly, there's even more shocking information that Oliver didn't relay.

I watched the episode last night and midway through the segment I found myself wondering which situation you were involved with. Not asking you to out your client here, just commenting. (Fairly sure I could make an educated guess but it's irrelevant.)

Pretty sure the majority of people that use these kind of services would not want a record of it even if it was considered 100% legal if you took that step.

PM sent.

And yes, those who know me from these boards over the years can probably make a pretty accurate educated guess as to which situation I was involved with.
