And with Cannon essentially a right MF tonight, if Morris can trap, dribble, pass or shoot...yeah- let's figure something else like Boyd here.

Eta...that's CAN'T...can't do those things

Absent a few miscues the back line has been pretty strong

Needed Bradley helping better there - Ream was isolated between two spots

Wow, what a great ball into the box. Cannon, right?

I like seeing that there actually is a drop off in talent here for the mex team.

Ew...hyperextended elbow for pizarro there.

He doesn’t need his arm anyway. It’s soccer. 😁

Good first half.  The positioning and energy spent covering for each other is very impressive (credit to Berrhalter)

Boyd in would be good, but players are going to be gassed soon

Halftime observations

* Lets start at the back.  The back 4, all of them including Ream, have been excellent.  Cannon's touch is fantastic tonight and Miazga is eating almost every high ball.

* Weston has not been involved much at all but he seems to be working hard covering defensively

* Jozy's scuff was unfortunate because it was the best chance of the half, but he has been very good outside of that.  He has been a solid outlet player all half

* Morris has stood out for me as the only US player to have a poor half.  Nips worked his butt off on the other side

* Pulisic is going to make something happen, it is almost there

A very solid half for the US IMO

* Mexico has not been tight at the back consistently.  The US will get chances tonight.  Hopefully they can bury one or two of them.

Several good (actually great) chances and nothing to show for it.

Add Bradley looking poor with Morris. Although he seemed to pick up the pace a little toward the end of the half.

Otherwise completely agree.

How much coke is Nips doing at half time?

Andy and I mentioned before the game swag needing to stay deep to help Caillou...which he has. So much so that Caillou isn't even going into tackles.

But they miss swag higher up, making the killer pass, driving the ball deep, and especially winning second balls to keep plays alive- they've been essentially ceded to Mex.

Having said that, I thought the US looked really good.  Just need to finish.

Pulisic looks like the best player on the field.

Very curious to see how the stamina holds. That was a fast first half.

The right side seems ripe to keep attacking.  We had three attacks die with Morris.   I would really love to see Boyd get a shot.  He is a better natural attacker than Morris and Berhalter has to make sure he gets back and helps.

I don't think he's been poor- his usual slower self for sure, but still knocking the good smart ball around. Just isn't offering much defensively other than trying to cover passing lanes and staying goalside of hisan.

His heat map has to be off the charts.   That is the level of effort he needs to give because we know its not his foot skills that are keeping him in the line up.

And like I said...with Cannon pushed into the MF, Morris doesn't have to do quite so much...perfect for BOyd

Berhalter has not been quick on the trigger so far this tournament.

Jozy is the key to me.  If he loses his wind and we have to replace with Zardes, that is going to be a big drop off.

Although I'll take the inverse of Jozy here with a bunch of zardoz touches, but a goal.

Of all the players, Cannon has really popped.  He had that one play where he settled the ball perfectly, beat two guys and drove the ball up the field, that Yedlin has no ability to make with his hard touch.

Very exciting to see given his age and lack of experience.

I think we are going to 2 or 3 real good chances for both sides in the second half.  Should be fun to watch.

Okay, so now we get to jump on a Mexican player and choke another and no cards should be given.

This could be huge if they have to replace him and Ochoa for injury
