Just got back from 2 weeks in Cabo. Great resorts, pools/beaches every day, great views, much bueno tequila and sensational food. World class fishing, terrific golf and everything you'd want to scratch your particular itch. Have some cervezas, bet a few horse races at the casino, then take your winnings for a massage across the street.

Still recovering. That Double Double after landing at LAX helped.

 Well, I am in Paris right now, having just travelled through Rome, Sicily, and London...

love cabo. we went for our 1st and 2nd anniversaries (sept) about 18 years ago and were evacuated both times due to hurricanes.

We have a house for sale in San Jose. If any of you Cabo lovers are interested, PM me and I'll send you the listing. No joke.

Forgot to add that I honeymooned in Cabo 22 years ago and loved it then. I'm sure it's changed a bunch in that time.

Please don't beat me up for this as I am not a world traveler and have some paranoia. Is CABO safe? Is it like other places as long as you stay on the resort you are fine.

That was my question. I know the Cancun/Rivera Maya area is fairly safe but I would feel uncomfortable going pretty much anywhere else in Mexico.

Cabo is 100% safe. You are in Baja. Not mainland Mexico. We walk/drive everywhere up, including the wee hours. We stayed on the Pacific side - 1st week at Pueblo Bonito Sunset Beach, 2nd week at Playa Grande. IMO PG has the perfect location. 3 minute walk to the marina and very close to all of the best restaurants. If anyone goes hit me up. Feel I've got the town down cold by now. There are sensational restaurants. Also great places to party. Happy Endings Cantina - 2 Pacificos and 2 shots of tequilas for $5. No BS.

Hacienda Cantina Y Cocina is one of the best restaurants on earth. The quality/value metric is ridiculous.

How many machine guns did you see on your walk?

Went fishing at Lake El Salto out side of Mazatlan a couple of years ago. Once we got outside of Mazatlan it was another world. Our driver told us to never get out of the vehicle and never leave the property after dark. I got up in the middle of the night went outside to get some fresh air and there were dudes with machine guns all over guarding the property. That was enough Mexico for me.

It's like saying you don't want to spend time in Denver because you heard there's bad crime in East LA.

Agreed. Cabo is amazing. Last time there was when wife and I went for our honeymoon in 07. One of the best weeks of my life. FIL still has a nice time share there so we're hoping to get back in the next couple of years. Although I had trouble finding football there and missed AP ripping off 200 yards against the Bears...

Am I the only one who feels like Smails takes tons of vacations? I swear, every other post seems to be about going to, during, or coming back from some sweet trip.

Totally jealous.

Does anyone go to Cabo from the East coast? Just wondering how much nicer it would need to be to justify the longer trip compared to the nice resorts on the east side of the country.

Not sure why you would. You can replace "Cabo" in this title with about a million other places in the carrib / central America that are much closer/cheaper for east coasters and don't include machine guns.

How does Cabo compare to Cancun? I've been to Cancun a few times but have been contemplating trying Cabo.
same,

where do you go in cancun btw?
There are always resort activities. Downtown Cancun has clubs and bars and shopping etc. The clubs are a mix of a Vegas show with normal club activities. Coco Bunga was fun, music imitators like Madonna, Lady Gaga, Michael Jackson and a cool show. We took the bus from our resort in Hotel Zone, took about 10-15 min by bus to downtown Cancun. There are excursions you can plan like snorkeling, day adventure parks and the like. We did a day trip to Play Del Carmen, more shopping, restaurants, touristy stuff.

We go to Cabo every year for the Sammy Hagar Birthday Bash.....great time and as Judge says, Cabo Rules !!!!

My favorites are the two little bars behind Cabo Wabo....and for food, Salvatores can't be beat....my girl and I sat in a open air Cantina on the Marina one Sunday and watched 6 hours of NFL...Drank $ 8 buckets of beer and cocktails and food....Total bill was $ 42...
You're talking about Rips, correct? Love Rips, though the band at the other bar was a little off (and loud). Salvatore's has amazing Italian food. We ordered 2 lasagnas to feed 5. No joke, they are as big as a football. The pork shank is one of the best dishes ever.

Did you win the lottery for Sammy's bash this year? Supposed to be epic. Toby Keith came on stage the night before we were there last week.

Dude - you are so off base with the machine gun comments. It's amazing how many people have this perception. Safe as can be. Not kidding.

Cabo is very unique. On the southern tip of the Baja peninsula. It's basically a desert with water on both sides. You can play 2 nines of golf, one will be surrounded by cactus and the other 9 on the ocean. Typically not humid at all unless it's July-Sept. World class fishing. I've been to several places in the Caribbean but never Cancun. I agree it's what you are close to. Cabo is a little over 2 hours from LAX on a direct flight. I would choose it over Cancun every time just because of that. Also why I lean to Hawaii. I'm sure if I was on the East Coast I'd be a Caribbean guy.

Not really. We are big on family vacations, so I plan one big one a year. Usually 10-14 days, though Europe was 18. I'm all about life experiences. And I'll spend for them. It helps that I get a lot of airline and hotel points through work, and I bought 2 two bedroom timeshares a long time ago when realizing that 1 hotel room wasn't holding a family of 5. So that sort of forces vacations.

Other than that, I need carrots on my calendar to keep me sane. Doing a boys trip to Del Mar in August to party and play the ponies (just a drive for me), and then going with the same couple we went to Cabo with to New Orleans in October. Just need a little somethin' every few months. Concert, whatever. I'm the anti-Dentist when it comes to spending on this stuff. I want to live and experience now. If I'm 90 and standing outside a soup kitchen I will have made the wrong choice. Otherwise.......

 My kind of guy.

I've been to Cabo twice and Playa Del Carmen (just south of Cancun) once. I'll take PDC over Cabo every time, but the last time I was in Cabo was 2002 while the PDC trip was in 2008. The Gulf water is warmer than the Pacific and the Mayan ruins and cenotes trump the activities in Cabo, IMO.

That being said, Cabo is fun. Taking an ATV tour was a blast. The downtown area is compact and easy to get around with lots of good restaurants and bars.

i have been to cabo and cancun. i enjoyed them both. cabo is more mellow, shorter travel day (2 1/2 hr flight). you can still go a little crazy, just fewer discos, etc. we went to cancun about 20 years ago. took several drives (tulum, playa, xel-ha, chichen itza, coba) and made it out to isla mujeres and cozumel on that trip. really liked the towns south of cancun and cozumel. went to cozumel about 6 years ago and had a different experience than the first trip...way too many cruise ships coming and going. liked the other side of the island. when we lived in colorado, my preferrence was the yucatan. being on the west coast, i prefer looking at cabo, ixtapa/zihuatinejo, puerto vallarta. if i lived on the east coast i would focus on the caribbean islands and the yucatan for mexico.

we prefer fewer crowds.

Machine gun comment was about Yucatan side. They're everywhere from Cancun (which sucks) down to Tulum (which is awesome). Cabo is definitely on my bucket list though. Supposed to be one of best places on earth to catch a rooster fish from the surf. :fishy:

eta - meant that Cancun sucks for a family looking for a chill time. Im sure its awesome for spring breakers or people looking to party.

Now I gotta get the wife on board.

Any suggestions as far as hotels stay? The wife is a bit of a princess when it comes to hotels so my initial search returned this place: Zoetry Case del Mar

I am totally on board with you on this. I often tell the wife that we should always have something to look forward to just a couple of months away

Being on the East Coast, our get-aways with the family are typically New York, Charleston/Hilton Head, and Key West. We've been to Key West around 10x (my sister has a place there) and that's my go-to for getting away from it all and just relaxing.

You realize about the only thing I'm willing to spend money on is experiences/vacations.

I'm not cheap on everything.. just almost everything.

But I spent 12 days in the Caribbean last year and another 6 days at a very nice lake in our state.... and I have a small season package of premium tickets to our local MLB team.

I also agree that you have to have things to look forward to... and I like "doing stuff". I'm a boat owner (no loan - older boat) as well which is completely a -EV experience.. but damn fun!

I make the decision to live in a cheap house and we own 2 cheap cars so that I can meet both my goals of saving heavily so I don't have to do another root canal in my life.. while also enjoying life. But my definition of enjoying life doesn't include what most of our country values... the big house, the name brand clothing, the luxury auto, the maid, and eating out multiple times a week.

I'm with you here. Vacations are just worth it. We used to just do a semi-nice vacation once a year (or every other) but have recently decided this is something we enjoy doing, regardless of cost.

So far this summer we've done Michigan UP (this was a cheapie though because we stayed with the inlaws) and an adults only trip to Put-in-Bay. Also have a Fla trip planned for next week (family trip, Disney and Legoland), and we are talking about possibly Grand Cayman or the Fla Keys in Dec.

Only thing to know here is there is a BIG difference between being in the "Corridor" and downtown Cabo (Medano Beach area). Many of the top all-inclusives are in the Corridor. I stayed at the Hilton Los Cabos my first trip. Only problem? It's a 20 minute drive if you have a rental car or an expensive taxi ride every time you want to go where the action is. The reviews for the Zoetry are good, but it's an AI, very quiet, not much going on at night. If that's what you want, go for it. My opinion? I wouldn't do an AI. So many great restaurants, bars, hole in the walls etc near Medano Beach that I would want a hotel (Casa Dorada, etc) where you can just walk to the action.

I like your style then. I just don't get the people that re-use paper towels, then die with $10 million in the bank having done nothing fun in their lives.
