I just happened to look and Pokerstars is still up and looks like its taking deposits? What's changed?

Online poker has never been illegal, banking with US banks was the issue and no, for the US nothing has changed.

not illegal to play. never has been.

pokerstars won't take money from US players though as far as I know.

Depends on which state you live in. Sites like PokerStars won't offer the game to people that live in WA state. We have our own special law that makes playing any form of online poker a class C felony. Yes, the same state that just made smoking weed legal. Go figure.

What about in NJ? We have online casinos that are now legal.

ETA:
Will PokerStars / Full Tilt Poker be available in NJ?
Highly likely. The current launch target is Q3 2015.
Once Amaya completed their purchase of PokerStars, there appeared to be a good chance that PokerStars and Full Tilt Poker would be available in New Jersey. The thinking was that the purchase would remove the executives and associations that had caused concern for NJ regulators.
New Jersey law does not contain a so-called “bad actors” clause, so the decision about whether to allow PokerStars in is left completely up to regulators. And regulators initially appeared to be bullish on PokerStars’ chances post-Amaya purchase.
With that said, PokerStars’ approval to offer online poker in NJ is taking longer than anticipated. Here’s an article covering the various theories behind that delay.

This. I play all the time. It's just my hobby/fun money so I have no desire to cash out.

Got invited to testify at a senate hearing in Washington state next week. Will do my best to represent the online poker crowd.

- Game of skill. Long term winners don't just get lucky
- As safe and secure as other online entities like banks and businesses
- We shouldn't be classified as criminals when we choose to spend our entertainment dollar playing poker

Always willing to share my iPoker history whenever I can. I hope one day we'll be back in business.

If things go south, just stand up and say, 'Well, then I hope that old POS Sheldon Adelson dies, then all of you bastards can quit sucking his ####.'

"Look, the FBI guys, they promised me a deal. So, so I made up a lot of stuff about Otis from the Internet 'cause that's what they wanted. But it was all lies. Uh, everything. And I kept saying Otis did this and Otis did that. So, I said yeah sure -- why not?"

Americas Card Room. You can play in the US and they have a sports book too
Several states (I think mine was first) have adopted their own laws making online gambling of any sort illegal. In WA state its a class C felony. Yes, playing poker for nickels and pennies is a FELONY in my state. Burn up a bowl at home? No sweat. Rake a 12 cent pot in holdem, felony. Because of this, all the poker providers don't offer the game in our state.

Who are you IRL, if you don't mind.

NJ is legal, but we only get to play bs other people in NJ, so no massive tourneys are there unless you go to a still not legal offshore site. So it is half fixed for us.

Of course you are criminals if the government doesn't get a cut.

In Ohio and don't think we have any laws on it. I hope not, anyways.

Illegal

The Federal Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act 2006 holds operating an online poker business in Ohio as illegal, unless a state has passed legislation permitting it. Since Ohio has not passed any such legislation, operating an online poker site is deemed illegal in the state. However, residents of Ohio continue to play poker legally at offshore sites not regulated under United States jurisdiction.

You are an American hero. Much respect.
Sort of a weird scenario. Teacher confesses crime in front of state senate. A few articles are starting to pop up. Seattle radio station picked it up as well. Wondering how much attention I want from all this. Had the superintendent of the school I teach at talk to me yesterday. He let me know I was good to go if I wanted to pursue the issue and bring it into the light.

Also got blasted by some random internet stranger calling me an addict. Apparently I've been locked away in a dark room because I have no friends. I guess you'll have this if you put yourself in the spotlight.

Shick said he made about $2,000 in profits during that summer playing online poker, but would have actually lost more than $1,000 if playing with the same degree of success at a physical casino, because of the higher rake, or commission, taken by the cardroom
Was this back in the golden age of online poker? Nowadays I have a hard time believing anyone is making any real money with online poker. It's full of nothing but super-tight nits.

Meanwhile the live players in Washington card rooms continue to be fish. Yeah you have to pay a higher rake and get fewer hands in, but the money you can make from a few pots is much higher than what you're going to see online.

The 214,000 hands of data I shared was from only the summer of 2009. The game tightened up a lot then and I was making about 2BB/100 hands. Compared to the other grinders (according to pokerratings.com) I was doing quite well. I remember well the 2003 to 2006 hey-day. Was no problem making cash then, but the game changed severely when the multi-table full ring grinders became the norm as opposed to the rarity.

I was (and I guess I still am) a low limit full ring grinder. Once you commit to the limit game your profit margins are sort of predefined if you play disciplined. From what I understand players who play well can crush no-limit live games. It's much more difficult in a live limit game.
