I'm getting pretty psyched about him in dynasty. If they really do throw him the ball, the sky's the limit in the next few years.

 
Morning practice today-

9 on 7 (running drill) was dominated by the D against the Titans porous OL. Coaches threw fits and the OL picked it up...some.

Mularkey called out Henry for his ability to hit slim holes.

This is something to consider. Murray can't "make something happen" when the line stinks, Henry can.

The plan hasn't changed or anything, it's still Murray, but (today, after a single practice, overreact) if the Titans face a top rush D maybe that means you start Henry in FF.

Sit tight, one day only, but gold star for Henry today

 
 

The Nashville Tennessean reports Derrick Henry has displayed "surprisingly excellent pass-catching ability."
The Titans' website passed along a similar report Thursday, saying Henry "continues to catch the ball well out of the backfield." Coach Mike Mularkey said something similar in June. The Titans clearly don't want to limit their day-two back to two-down duties. DeMarco Murray is the heavy favorite to man third downs early on, but Henry will be pressuring him on all fronts.

I've got to talk to him about that tempo period because we've got a bunch of guys up front that are creating things for him and he's not hitting it like I'd like to see him hit it. Later in the practice—I hope that's not the case in games. We need him to be full-strength. As soon as we call his number, he needs to hit things better.”

Henry is a good college RB and great athlete for his size. However, he has a horrible body type for the RB position. Long legs/top heavy have made it difficult for him to maintain his balance, cut outside of his frame, stop/start, and lateral agility beyond a 45 degree angle. Go watch the Auburn tape at draftbreakdown, he falls down all the time...due to his body type. He's a downhill runner that needs a good OL to succeed. Other runners that are quick and have lateral agility can compensate for a worse OL. Henry would be miserable behind a bad OL. If you watch tape, Bama creates a running game that's downhill and holds backside DE's with jet sweeps to allow for a less than 45 degree angle cutback inside of that DE if Henry needs to. Straight ahead running only works with a great OL...not many of those exist in the NFL.

He's a worse version of DMC. Remember DMC in Oakland? Long legs prevented him from avoiding all of the defenders in the backfield because he didn't possess the agility. The OL was terrible and got owned by defensive fronts. Now in Dallas DMC is a solid RB in his late years. This is exactly what Henry needs.

Still looks like the heisman runner. NFL talent didn't make him seem less or somewhat average.

 
He does look good.  My biggest concern is that defenders are going to quickly realize that the best way to bring him down is by torpedoing at his knees, as they do to Gronk.  Hope he can avoid any catastrophic knee injuries.

Agreed. Terrible tackling technique by the Chargers.

To Henry's credit he was able to get out of a couple easy leg tackles, defenders have to learn to just grab hold of him and not let go so another defender can help clean up.

True but they're better than the college defenses he faced.

He's going to have a lot of steps in this process of becoming a pro.

He nailed the Titans scrimmage with 3 TDs and now he did well in a preseason game.

Murray is not supposed to play much this summer, Henry will probably get to face ones next week. The Panthers are a very nice test for him. I'd also imagine with their defensive mindset they showed in 2015, they might even get a little "up" for stopping Henry. There's not a whole lot for veterans to get excited about in the summer. This could be good for the Panthers too.

The Titans have 11 WRs and have to make some very big decisions. The rest of preseason can't be this much about the run. 11 catches by WRs last night is not enough. They could cut one or two first round caliber talents at WR, guys they put a lot of effort into developing. They have to evaluate them in games. Golden Boy only completed five passes. I wasn't so pleased with how he reacted to pressure a couple times. He needs some work this summer too.

Brandon Jacobs and Bam Morris hurt their knees just being athletes, wasn't due to a hit. This never happened to them. I think Okoye was the same.

Gronk is at a disadvantage sitting in a zone or waiting for a pass to come. These guys are running right at a defender. Gronk is more Bavaro-like. He's ready to carry 500 defenders on his back while running straight ahead. He is not running at them hoping for a collision. If any TE is like these backs, it'd be young Jeremy Schockey before the Giants ruined him by making him stop doing this attacking style.

Solid point and while I don't disagree, that's simply my biggest concern regarding Henry.  

I also don't think there was as in the way of defenders diving straight at knees back in the day (Okoye, Bettis, etc) as there is in today's game with all the emphasis on avoiding head shots.

There were at least a few times that the Titans lined up both Murray and Henry in the backfield, which was interesting. I think every carry out of those formations went to Murray, but you have to figure Henry is out there for a reason. If they actually use those formations, it could help Henry get carries even while splitting time.

 
I was really pleased. I think Henry will take over this year. Murray was mostly getting stuffed for little or no gain. But even if it remains a timeshare looks like Titans could run 30-40 times a game. 

 
Henry looks to be a stud!  Does anyone know why/how he was able to wear the #2 for the game yesterday as a RB?  I didn't think RB's could wear single digits - Reggie Bush wanted to wear 5 but the NFL didn't let him.....

They drafted an excellent FB last year.  A late game fumble miscue got him about benched til late in the season. 

He was studly last night. He was Henry's college blocker and is his roommate in the dorms too. Watch those runs again, he takes someone out every play.  The line blocked better than they have in years, but even when the Chargers had a LB there to make a tackle, Fowler nailed em'.

There won't be too much Henry/Murray backfield as long as the FB is blowing guys up. In camp and OTAs, the Henry Murray backfield has a shift where one goes to the slot. They had CB injuries and when the better CBs returned, those two didn't do so well in the slot. It's a part time set, a package. They like the FB more and more. Now they have a play they called a few times last night where the TE shifts from near the LOS to the FB/H-back spot.

There's 90 players on the roster and 99 two digit numbers(naturally) minus the retired ones.

His number will change when they make cuts

It is interesting however from the perspective of Henry possibly being used as an HBack or TE as I recall you talking about.

I haven't studied Henry as a blocker very much, most of the time he had the ball, but the blocks I did see, he seemed to do that well.

What about a package that has Henry playing TE on the line with Fowler at FB and Murray at HB?

Yes this would take Walker and/or Stevens off the field unless they are in 3 TE, so perhaps those guys are still better options than Henry at this point. Still kind of fun to think about. I would call that pretty exotic along with smash mouth.

Ok - maybe that is the case???  But why are the Titans selling #2 Henry jerseys on NFL.com?

Reggie Bush was not allowed to wear the #5 in a pre-season game??  What is the deal here??

Mariota may have been the top selling rookie, he was at one point.

Probably has to do with sales and $. Maybe he gets even more this way as guys with #2 buy the new jersey also?

That just seems wrong - to sell a jersey that you know he will not be wearing...

There red are specific rules for what numbers certain positions can wear.  I wonder if he or the Titans will be fined for this...

Happens every year, it just grabs attention when it happens to a stud rookie.

Keith Byard and Sankey had the same # til recently.

Deion Sanders wore #2 every practice but wasn't allowed in games. Some diehards say "true fans" wear #2 for him.

Derrick Henry rushed five times for 31 yards against the Panthers Saturday.
Henry saw some snaps with the first-team offense, but the vast majority of his work came after Marcus Mariota left the field. Henry once again looked strong against backup defenders, gaining 25 yards on his first three carries of the second half and consistently gaining yards after contact. It is going to be difficult for the Titans to keep the talented rookie on the sidelines this season.

The #2 Henry jerseys you see are Customs from Nike...but Nike is only making the #24s, since that's his official league-approved number.

After two preseason games I don't want to overreact, but when you consider what he did in college, his measurables and how he has done so far in NFL, I am very, very optimistic.  He doesn't go down at first contact and also falls forward for a few extra yards. He picks his holes with good vision and shows good burst. His combination of power, speed and agility are impressive. He has "it" based on what I have seen. I wouldn't trade him for anyone in his rookie class at this point in dynasty.  Elliott is in a better situation but I am not at all convinced he is a better player.

I don't think he's picking holes. He loves his college FB and follows him anywhere. They're quite formidable.

Yeah, maybe that wasn't the right way to describe it. What I am impressed by is how he aggressively cuts and moves around his blockers, and then accelerates through a seam or hole, breaking arms tackles and such.  

 
 

Coach Mike Mularkey promised Wednesday that the Titans will "find ways" to get Derrick Henry on the field this season.
Mularkey confirmed DeMarco Murray is the "starter," but the Titans are likely to use a two-back offense that could expand to three if Dexter McCluster is incorporated as the passing-down specialist. Henry has looked genuinely special this August. The Titans would be foolish to not give him 10-14 touches per game. With that said, Murray has dominated the first-team preseason snaps so far.

Gotta admit, I'm diggin the "exotic smashmouth" in Tennessee.....Murray is a beast that needs to be fed!.....bring in a fresh Henry, very nice!  That Sharpe kid look like a gamer too.....loved it when he ran over to help Mariota up after he got tackled.....he seems like a solid team guy in the little I've seen him....O line is the big question mark I guess.

WRs are brutal, maybe the worst in the league. Would help create some space for the backs if they at least had a threat. I do like Henry in dynasty though.

 
Roto did an endaround on that quote there. If you want to quote Mularkey do it, not Terry...it's botched up and I was actually wondering why this didn't get more attention here til I noticed that. Other boards are discussing his quote today and ....here:

Until we start putting game plans together and we get a good day-and-a-half of sitting there with an offense together, we'll find ways to get him on the field. We know what he's capable of doing. Again, I just want to be careful of—I did it one time where I went in and I started worrying about how many numbers guys would get, and it didn't work. So we're going to do what's best for the team like we've been doing from the beginning, and whatever that is, if he's a large part of it, it is. He'll have a role, definitely.

Oh absolutely, yeah. And DeMarco (Murray) hasn't shown me any reason not to be on the field. It's going to be hard to get them all the ball. They all have a role to play. If they don't have it, they're going to play a piece in the play to make the play successful. But again, we have not gotten into a total game plan as of yet with all the guys we have now.
