Plastic Bertrand is always the first one I think of when I think "French song".

Scratch that... second one. Here's the obvious choice.

Like the MC Solar mention up thread too. Phoenix is a decent recent choice for poppy indie stuff.

eta: and I've always been partial to Bonnie and Clyde.
