Concerts thread - FBG's lovin' live music, we're back in action! (2 Viewers)

Neil Young solo in Portland on May 17th, and in Seattle with Promise of the Real on the 20th. Two amazing, but completely different shows. I typically like him solo more than playing with others, but other than seeing him with Crazy Horse, this is the best collaboration I've seen. 'Ohio' and 'Old Man' were highlights.

Dude is a living legend. There is no other singer/songwriter I'd rather see live.
I have a number of friends who have seen him in the last few days and they're all saying he's at the top of his game.

Saw them both at Arroyo Seco Fest last year and Promise of the Real again at Willy Nelson’s festival. First time seeing Neil.  I get it now.

just got this news... some of you from the other music threads might remember that my non-IDLES favorite band is Parquet Courts and that floppinho- who I've linked playing music with his chapter of School of Rock- was part of the kid's chorus doing backing vocals on one of the songs off their last album, Wide Awake ("death will bring change").

wife calls me (while I'm in the middle of a meeting) to tell me that the band wants the kids to sing with them in central park summer stage on june 8th. :excited:

still in the working-out stages of it all- but would be pretty ####### great if this happened.
:pickle:

game on! I get a fancy bracelet for backstage action as chaperone.

dammit... wife just called and says she wants the bracelet. it's gonna be a fight.

my tinnitus is really going to be the end of seeing shows- even with earplugs. :kicksrock:

a show on friday I won't have to worry about in that regard... floppinho's 6th grade class recital. 1 flute, 1 viola, 1 clarinet, 1 ultra-super-handsome-talented-brilliant percussionist, 5 violins, 5 pianos.

all individual performances as the school is set up that way, not for ensembles. I think floppinho is on drums (not a kit) and marimba. the piano and violin kids are ridonculously good- like, already touring and playing places good. looking forward to it. and because percussion is only introduced in middle school, most of the kids- who are clearly super competitive with each other in the same instrument- seem to actually enjoy hearing something new.

his radiohead final show is the beginning of June. really looking forward to that based on the little I saw at the midseason show.

also still fingers' crossed for him getting to sing with Parquet Courts at Summer Stage in Central Park on the 8th.
floppinho's 6th grade recital was insane- it's mindbottling how talented these kids are at 11.

floppinho did a couple of vic furth preludes on drums (not a kit). some other highlights:

Concert Etude- C Mostras- for violin

Carmen Fantasy: 1.Allegro, 2.Moderato- P de Sarasate- for violin

Prelude and Allegro a la Pugnani- Kreisler/Ginzberg- for piano

Prelude in c minor, op 23, rondo- Rachmaninoff- for piano

I genuinely felt like I was sitting in a concert hall at lincoln center hearing professionals instead of in a makeshift lunch-room/ gym listening to kids. I'm blown away that my kid somehow is a part of all of this and goes to this school.

Snoop tomorrow

Strokes Monday.
Snoop was super fun. Basically plays his huge hits, then covers a bunch of other rap hits that he guested on versions of (The Next Episode, P.I.M.P, All I do is Win, Young Wild and Free, California Girls, etc...). Warren G came with him and the played 'Regulate' with Snoop singing Nate Dogg's part.

Strokes were great too, sound great, look great, don't talk too much but I knew that was the case going in. I sold the original seats I bought and upgraded to box seats closer to the stage, a great decision.

Strokes lead singer lived in the neighborhood and had a kid the same age as one of my kids...used to see them at our tiny neighborhood playground. He actively sought to avoid every other parent and kid there. Not the case with liev Schreiber or Jim Gaffigan

I have to say the Riot Fest lineup ####### kills every year. This year you can see:

  • Flaming Lips play Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots
  • Bloc Party play Silent Alarm
  • Against Me play Reinventing Axl Rose and Transgender Dysphoria Blues
  • Ween play The Mollusk, and...
  • Slayer
  • Blink 182
  • The Raconteurs
  • Bikini Kill
  • Patti Smith
  • Violent Femmes
  • Manchester Orchestra
  • B-52's
  • Rancid
  • Hot Snakes
  • Bob Mould
  • Guided by Voices
  • Pennywise
  • American Football
  • Ride
  • Lucero
and then the bottom of the lineup has like Pkew Pkew Pkew, Cherry Glazerr, Cursive, Skating Polly, Turnover, Nick Lowe, Surfer Blood, The Beaches

Going to see Dead & Company at The Hollywood Bowl tonight. I’ve been to around 30 shows back in the late 80’s, early 90’s, when Jerry was still with us. Also a number of Phil and Friends, The Other Ones, RatDog shows, but this is a special one. This will be my first concert with my daughter, Cassidy. Yes, we named her after the Grateful Dead song.

Going to Chicago Bluesfest.  https://www.chicago.gov/city/en/depts/dca/supp_info/chicago_blues_festival16.html?fbclid=IwAR1_QUDp8rN5lGxKVdmpSruCelsoH4kEvzhgPjdGtM9Wm2kC6xD4hqswx7g Going to see hundreds of great musicians with three days of Fest and possible Thursday show. Taking time for dinner at my mothers so not sure will see any Thursday. This will be my first at Millenium Park with many friends performing and great veterans. Especially looking forward to Jimmy Johnson, Carl Weathersby performing with my friends Rico McFarland and Wayne Baker Brooks, and Michael Ledbetter tribute. My frequent houseguests Susan Williams and Wright Groove perform between, Jimmy Johnson and Charlie Musselwhite/Billy Boy Arnold set. Meeting Ivy Ford Sunday who I judged in Memphis. Started to map out a schedule to follow and had 12 bands before Friday's headliner stage and Susan Williams was anounced. Other greats Latimore, Jarekus Singleton , Bobby Rush, Ruthie Foster  and Joe Morganfield and many I am forgetting. https://www.facebook.com/ChicagoBluesFestival/photos/gm.822787404732078/10155912076172161/?type=3&theater

Brokedown Palace

Incredible show last night as John Mayer melted everyone's faces. They had a high school jazz band (with a huge horn section) come out for the intro and then played Shakedown with the band. Was so stoked to hear Cassidy with my daughter, and a perfect ending with Brokedown Palace. Place was full to the gills and one of the biggest deadheads around was at the show...Bill Walton. Amazing time to say the least.

Not music but saw Adam Sandler on tour last week in Blaine, MN.  meh.

His show 2 years ago was a lot better.  Glad he sand the Farley song again, but at the first one when he debuted it, it was one of the most beautiful moments of my life.

I recently saw Bobby Brown with Bell Biv Devoe.  Bobby doesn’t have the energy to keep up with the rest of the boys these days.  Hell, he barely even tries to.

Seeing that set list makes me want to go see Dead & Co when they come to Foxboro on June 22.   I'm just a little concerned about the venue...  Gillette Stadium is huge and I'm sure the best seats will be far away from the stage.  Anyhow.  I previously saw Dead & Co. at Fenway and at the Boston Garden.  The audio at the Garden was pretty good but at Fenway it could have been turned up a few notches to suit me.

Awesome.  Hitting Deer Creek and Wrigley next week.  Can’t wait.

Thats so freaking cool.  That had to be chilling.

I had to give up my Dead and Co tix at the Bowl. Freakin’ business trip. 15+ friends went and said it was awesome as expected. Every band brings their A game to that venue.

Going to The Record Company tonight with my sister and her boyfriend. I had never heard of them but early listens are promising. Anyone here a fan?

Summer starts off slow, then 3 in 4 days in mid-August.

Zombie/Manson - July 13, Riverbend

Alice Cooper/Halestorm - July 23, Riverbend

Breaking Benjamin/Chevelle/3 Days Grace - August 7, Riverbend

Iron Maiden - August 15, Riverbend

Skillet/Sevendust - August 16, PNC Pavilion at Riverbend

Korn/Alice in Chains - August 18, Riverbend

Summer has started so that means as many outdoor concerts as I can get to at the trifecta, which is the Hollywood Bowl, Santa Barbara Bowl and Greek Theater. All fantastic venues.

Last night was Train, Goo Goo Dolls and Allen Stone at the Santa Barbara Bowl. Beautiful night. Train - real pro’s. So tight technically and Pat was great. All the hits plus some new stuff. Only bummer was while they did a Queen cover they didn’t do more. I’ve seen them close with Ramble On/Dream On in encores and crush it.

Goo Goo Dolls started slow but finished strong  In an hour set they should never let the bass player sing a note.  Waste of 2 songs

Allen Stone was the guy we wanted to see  Saw him at Arroyo Seco Fest on a small stage and love his voice/vibe  He came out to sing with Pat later and went toe to toe  Really, really good

Santana with Doobie Brothers then Hootie and the Blowfish on back to back nights at the Hollywood Bowl in less than 2 weeks. Just getting a hotel there and will walk to the Bowl for pregame.  Not a bad Monday/Tuesday

I'm a fan.If you scroll back a bit I saw them and gave them a good review. They are all great to watch individually. If I remember correctly the bass player was in such a groove he was on another planet when I saw them.

Enjoy!!!!!

Bros  a big live music guy. Not trying to piss on anything here but last 5 posts I read Bob Seger, Korn, Alice In Chains, Goo Goo Dolls, Santana, Iron Maiden, and I think Sevendusf.

Which leads me to my next question - how old are you exactly?

I'll add Rolling Stones, Eric Clapton, Eagles....Old enough (57) to enjoy all genres of music, young and old.  One weekend I'll go to Bruno Mars/Chris Stapleton, then see blues like Kenny Wayne Shepherd, Samantha Fish, Joe Bonnamassa, Robert Cray - love others like Tedeschi Trucks, etc.  But I do want to see these older acts while they are still above ground.  Almost never got to see Petty before I did the year he died.  Bummed I missed Seger...

Going to see Eric Burden and The Animals tonight! Super stoked. I didn't know he was still doing his thing. Totally got me by surprise. Which makes it that much more exciting. I had them filed under "bands I never got to see".

Three Dead and Company shows in 4 days.  I never even did a string like this when Jerry was still alive.  Deer Creek lot scene was awesome Wednesday.  At Wrigley the last two nights was pretty cool, although we got soaked Friday night.
The last show I saw was in the late 90's, but I did a few parking lot scenes into the early 00's.

Have things changed much since then?

I would say not much when you look at a show like Deer Creek.  Lot scene very similar.  Probably biggest difference is that everyone, and I mean everyone, has their own pot at shows.

I'd say Chicago was a little different.  I think less die-hard fans and probably more people there out of curiosity.

The music has changed.  Weir likes the tempo slow, and there's not a whole lot of experimentation going on.  Mayer's sound is more bluesy, but still fits.

I like Mayer too.

I remember my 1st time at a parking lot scene. I was trying to score - obviously - but I was also really trying to fit in (in an honest way), but I was never a real deadhead. After failing to connect on many levels, one of the more open heads pointed out that I was wearing a metal watch and Ray Ban aviator sunglasses. Apparently, that implied that I was a NARC to too many folk.

Next scene I was better prepared. Doses flowed like wine.

I never even missed my watch --- and doubt I could have used it anyways.

We saw jazz/soul singer Jose James over the weekend.

Finn Andrews from The Veils tomorrow night.  He's only doing a handful of US dates at the tail end of his world tour.

Jose James fan, here. Hard to go all in for me, but love the songs individually... if that makes sense.

This was one my favorite tunes and albums the year it came out

Wasn't aware of this series from NPR, but Idles playing in a small office is kind of fun:

Uh, yeah, I'm going to have to ask you to quiet it down.
the tiny desk series is fantastic... and a deep rabbit hole.

was hoping for, but not expecting IDLES to do this- looking forward to checking it out- thanks!
lol... they've got guitarist jon tethered to that drum (in the same USA legging he wore to the show I saw)- if not he'd have single-handedly destroyed the room. no idea where the keyboard or keyboardist came from.

I saw the Earls of Leicester again this past weekend.  They are fantastic; a must-see act for anyone interested in bluegrass music.  This is an all-star band lead by Jerry Douglass that plays exclusively Flat and Scruggs music recorded between 1954 and 1965.  Every dude in this band is at the absolute top of his game.  One bonus with this band is that I'm not the oldest guy at the show.  I always think of my dad when Charlie Cushman plays the Foggy Mountain Breakdown.

Guns N Roses on sale tomorrow for Vegas first week in November.  Can combine with Breeders Cup action in the Sportsbook so intrigued.  Worth going? Never seen.  I know they struggled early to get in playing shape but latest reviews I've seen have been good.  Anybody go?

Howard Jones and Men Without Hats July 21st

Alarm with Modern English September 8th

Both in St. Pete

Arkells are playing the hockey arena in my hometown in the fall.

Not a huge band outside Canada but this is really cool, the first time I saw them was in this arena 11 years ago opening for Metric. Since then, they've worked up to headlining the tiny dive bar in the city, to playing the college campus, to the bigger dive bar, to the few hundred capacity concert venue and now returning to headline at the big arena.

I've seen them at all those local venues, and larger Toronto venues and festivals and Town Ballroom with @Steve Tasker but I think seeing them come back to the arena as headliners will be super cool (and I hope they sell a decent number of tickets cause they're jumping from 400 to 2000+).
