This year marked the 30th Anniversary for the festival, and since it is held in NC they had a lot of homegrowns playing. The most well-known of the NC bands is The Avett Brothers. They played last Thursday night, and put on a two hour show that was fantastic. They also played on Saturday afternoon doing a tribute to Doc Watson. They performed songs by the late great Doc Watson for an hour 1/2. For those who don't know, Doc Watson created Merlefest in honor of his late son Merle. They also did a gospel hour with their dad Jim on Sunday. Other NC artists that performed were Chatham County Line, Steep Canyon Rangers, Tift Merrit, Mandolin Orange, and Mipso. James Taylor also did a transantlic sessions special with Jerry Douglas, Sarah Jarosz, and some others. Sara Jarosz was also good performing alone.fatness said:Who played this year?simey said:I just got back from Merlefest today. It was great.
DId you see Tipsy?First weekend of Jazzfest with lots of ups and some downs - Friday was really good - caught Leon Bridges, then Joey Alexander(13 year old Indonesian kid) play some Coltrane, then NAS with Soul Rebels where Soul Rebels made the show pop. Killer New York.
Saturday was Corey Henry, Nigel Hall where Krasno joined on stage, Rebirth Brass and then Usher with Roots - Usher was pretty impressive but Roots makes the show.
Sunday a badd ### rain storm ruined most of the day - they opened gates at 3 - caught a brief few songs from Elle King, Then a couple of Mavericks tunes and then a killer set by Midnite Disturbers. Then headed to main stage for Petty and it was hard to take after Midnite Disturbers - it was a bit too blue and slow - I needed to keep dancing. Stayed for a few but then bailed and headed to Jazz tent for Maceo Parker - thank freaking god! Maceo basically dropping the James Brown songbook and he had the usually staid Jazz Tent in a dance fever. Great way to end the day - stopped by McClures/Nola Brewing for some food before calling it a night.
He was not around - it was Sunday night and it was a quick audible we made to stop there. No - I struggle with a lot of Jam bands generally after Jerry's passing. There are a few - I like CRB and Neal Casal are my favorites - I like JRAD they may be best of the Dead acts but it's not a must do. I love their spirit as it's more of a vibe that they tap than trying to duplicate. - I'm not a big Phish fan but admire what they do - I'm a bit older and it never really "clicked" for me in the Dead twilight/post Dead years. I'll be seeing some Panic on Thursday for a few songs at Jazzfest though because I love Jimmy Herring. Right now I'm more of a soul - funk - horns - jazz type of listener these days. I'll jump over to see Tower of Power that day for the most part.I may be in Denver for JRad/Phish Labor Day wkend. You going to ****'s Drew?
Escovedo doesn't come around here as much any more, sadly. Always does a great show. Best one I've seen was the first -- when he started playing and touring again after the bout with hepatitis, and he had his string quintet -- 2 acoustic guitars, one violin, 2 cellos.Currently planning to see: Poison, Def Leppard and Tesla, Alejandro Escovedo, Jason Isbell, and Green Day so far. May try to see Off With Their Heads and Steve Earle as well.
MMJ & Gary Clark Jr at Forest Hills on July 15...any NYC guys interested? Great seats near stage, hate to miss it, 4 tixUgh, will have to sell these, lax tourney in MD that weekend. Any NYC guys interested? Great seats.
I've never seen him and have really enjoyed a lot of his work. I'm pretty pumped to finally get the chance.Escovedo doesn't come around here as much any more, sadly. Always does a great show. You will see a fine show, whether electric or acoustic. The guy's masterful live.I've never seen him and have really enjoyed a lot of his work. I'm pretty pumped to finally get the chance.
Yup, saw him play an old church here in NJ - solo acoustic with the walk around at end. Played a row from me for one song. You will see a fine show, whether electric or acoustic. The guy's masterful live.
If it's an acoustic show he (and musicians) often wander the crowd at the end, sitting or standing various places, doing 3 songs or so unmiked.
Going to see Petty at Summerfest this year.Thought Petty was a tad slow as well...but still enjoyed seeing him
May 7th - Opeth/Gojira/Devon Townsend Starland Ballroom, Sayerville, NJ Was really interested to see Townsend and he didn't disappoint. What a great set even though I wasn't familiar with all of the songs. Would love to see him in a larger venue as the headliner. Gojira was just a death metal blast furnace of energy. Opeth played a great set of old and new even though I'm not a big fan of the "new" prog Opeth.
May 25th - Tool I believe this Hershey, PA show was a last minute add to their tour schedule. My 1st Tool show/experience. Didn't really live up to the hype but definitely glad I got to see them.
June 4th - Iron Maiden/Ghost B.C.
June 28th - Fates Warning
July 9th - King Crimson
July 13th - Foreigner / Cheap Trick
July 27th - Boston, Joan Jett
August 9th - Roger Waters
August 26th - Gary Clark, Jr. <-Still on my "definitely maybe" list
I don't think too much of what passes for country music these days but wanted to echo what you said about Kenny Chesney. I saw him at the last FarmAid at Hershey (2102 maybe?) and he and his band were very good. I don't care for his music but playing good is playing good, and by the time it was their turn to get off the stage (there are a lot of acts to fit in at FarmAid) they were just getting warmed up. There was a couple a few rows in front of us standing, and the woman really just wanted to get out of there and ####. She was dancing with the music but mostly looking down to make sure she was showing enough boob, and grinding her hips and crotch against the guy she was with who was totally into Chesney. You could read his mind as he'd kiss her and then look back at the stage: "wow, she really wants it now, but damn it THAT'S KENNY".Lady Antebellum was awesome last night at the Hollywood Bowl. They are just pros now. Added a horn section and their band is airtight. Tons of hits and the encores were interesting. Didn't see Hillary and Kelsea Ballerini killin' Beyonce's Crazy in Love coming. Saw what you want about Country, but acts like Eric Church, Lady Antebellum, Kenny Chesney, Tim McGraw - they do concerts right. You get your money's worth. 2 1/2, 3 hour shows
Agree, but my concern with the bold part is outside of the just concluded Eric Church tour, it's 90 minutes max of the headliner and 75 minutes of relative nobody's in support that have at best one good song.Lady Antebellum was awesome last night at the Hollywood Bowl. Saw Maiden last week in Newark, totally agree, they absolutely crushed it. They continue to put out high quality music and are just killer in concert. Thinking of going to see them again next month in BrooklynWe had literally zero problem getting in or out.
Spent 2 hours at the tasting room at Cigar City brewing before the show, then stopped for about an hour at Ferg's to watch some hard rock cover band. At one point, I think they had an 11 year old kid playing drums on "For Whom the Bell Tolls."
Show was unbelievable. Place was packed for Ghost to open and they killed in only 45 minutes. They're headed for really big things. Maiden took the stage and kicked everyone's ### for 2 hours. People probably think these guys are a novelty act now like the Stones. No sir. Bruce is still doing ####ing leaps off the drum riser, they sound every bit as good as they did 30 years ago. High energy, technical perfection, tighter than Tom Thumb's ###. They're as good a rock show as you're ever going to see. Ageless. I was blown away.
If anyone reading this has the opportunity to go see them, do it. Even if you're not a rabid fan.
Saw them for the first time in Michigan last week and thought they were great. Not much in terms of stage presence, but on absolute point musically and a cool video / laser montage throughout the show made up for them not really doing anything on stage but playing their music.May 25th - Tool I believe this Hershey, PA show was a last minute add to their tour schedule. Very cool show for sure. I my biggest take away was the strangeness of Maynard. "my God he's a freaking alien". His voice is still awesome. I felt a bit weird as a 49 year old going wild over a 10' Eddie walking across the stage. Some other guy with the same name as me approves this message.Sunday....

Still having that voice at his age is seriously impressive. Metal isn't quite my thing (I went to the Metallica/GnR tour knowing that was rock music history in the making; saw Skid Row right when they hit it big, but only because they were the opening act for Bon Jovi so I doubt that counts). I'm glad it's out there for people to enjoy (can't deny the energy) and this era we're in where bands can still book shows 30-40 years after forming is fascinating to me.His voice is still awesome. That's cool. I love just about all genres of music - I'm just as likely to be at that H&O show as I'm a death metal show. Except country - I tried it, I can't do it (although I do have some Johnny Cash in my library that gets semi-regular play). I just love live music in general. I hadn't seen IM in 30 years so I wasn't sure how it would be. But yeah, Bruce is still belting it out pretty strong without altering the songs.Still having that voice at his age is seriously impressive. To demonstrate what's a bit more my speed.. last month I saw Hall & Oates with Tears For Fears. I had a great time, but it was clear the vocalists are past their primes. Curt Smith can't hit the high notes anymore, so they added a female backup vocal to fill out the sound, letting Curt stay in his current range and adding a harmony to mirror the sound of the original track. Darryl Hall is still a great singer but he can't sing high other than falsetto, so the band rearranged their hits in lower keys and added more musical improvision in spots where Darryl used to sing high over everything.
Don't post much in this thread but am a heavy lurker. Been getting out and seeing more live music the last few years, and I have a 14-year-old who enjoys playing and seeing shows, so that's fun. Enjoy reading about what concerts folks here are going to and what's on the docket for the next few months.
How in the hell do I not know this is happening?Sitting in basement bar at Thalia Hall pregaming for the first of 3 nights of the Hold Steady in Chicago. Really stoked about Mary Timony opening Night 2.
