I just got back from Merlefest today. It was great.
Who played this year?
This year marked the 30th Anniversary for the festival, and since it is held in NC they had a lot of homegrowns playing. The most well-known of the NC bands is The Avett Brothers. They played last Thursday night, and put on a two hour show that was fantastic. They also played on Saturday afternoon doing a tribute to Doc Watson. They performed songs by the late great Doc Watson for an hour 1/2. For those who don't know, Doc Watson created Merlefest in honor of his late son Merle. They also did a gospel hour with their dad Jim on Sunday.  Other NC artists that performed were Chatham County Line, Steep Canyon Rangers, Tift Merrit, Mandolin Orange, and Mipso. James Taylor also did a transantlic sessions special with Jerry Douglas, Sarah Jarosz, and some others. Sara Jarosz was also good performing alone.

Bela Fleck, Del McCoury Band, Peter Rowan, Marty Stuart, and Sam Bush were great, and I was impressed with Canada's Megan Nash. The Kruger Brothers, The Steel Wheels, Jim Lauderdale, Chris Jones and the Night Drivers were also good.  I left Sunday before the Zac Brown Band performed. One of the fun things they do on Saturday is The Hillside Album Hour. Every year The Waybacks (this year with guest Cecia Woodsmith) perform a classic rock album in its entirety on the Hillside stage, and a few weeks before the festival they throw out 5 obscure hints on what it will be. This year it was Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band. I

First weekend of Jazzfest with lots of ups and some downs - Friday was really good - caught Leon Bridges, then Joey Alexander(13 year old Indonesian kid) play some Coltrane, then NAS with Soul Rebels where Soul Rebels made the show pop. Killer New York.

Saturday was Corey Henry, Nigel Hall where Krasno joined on stage, Rebirth Brass and then Usher with Roots - Usher was pretty impressive but Roots makes the show.

Sunday a badd ### rain storm ruined most of the day - they opened gates at 3 - caught a brief few songs from Elle King, Then a couple of Mavericks tunes and then a killer set by Midnite Disturbers. Then headed to main stage for Petty and it was hard to take after Midnite Disturbers - it was a bit too blue and slow - I needed to keep dancing. Stayed for a few but then bailed and headed to Jazz tent for Maceo Parker - thank freaking god! Maceo basically dropping the James Brown songbook and he had the usually staid Jazz Tent in a dance fever. Great way to end the day - stopped by McClures/Nola Brewing for some food before calling it a night.

I saw Killswitch Engage and Anthrax this past weekend. That's usually not my type of show, but a couple buddies were going and had an extra ticket. Pretty good show.

Currently planning to see: Poison, Def Leppard and Tesla, Alejandro Escovedo, Jason Isbell, and Green Day so far. May try to see Off With Their Heads and Steve Earle as well.

He was not around - it was Sunday night and it was a quick audible we made to stop there. Chicken was fantastic as always

I may be in Denver for JRad/Phish Labor Day wkend.  You going to ****'s Drew?
No - I struggle with a lot of Jam bands generally after Jerry's passing. There are a few -  I like CRB and Neal Casal are my favorites - I like JRAD they may be best of the Dead acts but it's not a must do. I love their spirit as it's more of a vibe that they tap than trying to duplicate. - I'm not a big Phish fan but admire what they do - I'm a bit older and it never really "clicked" for me in the Dead twilight/post Dead years.  I'll be seeing some Panic on Thursday for a few songs at Jazzfest though because I love Jimmy Herring. Right now I'm more of a soul - funk - horns - jazz  type of listener these days. I'll jump over to see Tower of Power that day for the most part.

##### is a great place though - should be fun. I think I spent every weekend there for years playing soccer myself or watching my daughter play or the Rapids. We are living most of our time in Georgia/Alabama now on a lake.I'll be in Denver a bunch during summer - especially Tedeschi Trucks shows at Red Rocks and a couple more. That Phish weekend is Auburn vs Clemson and most likely we will be in Clemson.

Escovedo doesn't come around here as much any more, sadly. Always does a great show. Best one I've seen was the first -- when he started playing and touring again after the bout with hepatitis, and he had his string quintet -- 2 acoustic guitars, one violin, 2 cellos.

Ugh, will have to sell these, lax tourney in MD that weekend. Any NYC guys interested? Great seats.
MMJ & Gary Clark Jr at Forest Hills on July 15...any NYC guys interested? Great seats near stage, hate to miss it, 4 tix

I've never seen him and have really enjoyed a lot of his work. I'm pretty pumped to finally get the chance.

You will see a fine show, whether electric or acoustic. The guy's masterful live.

If it's an acoustic show he (and musicians) often wander the crowd at the end, sitting or standing various places, doing 3 songs or so unmiked.

Upcoming for me:

May 29 - Frightened Rabbit

July 25 - Spoon

July 28-30 - Wayhome (Cage the Elephant, Tegan and Sara, Justice, Shins, Car Seat Headrest, Phantogram, DFA 1979, PUP, Royal Blood, Constantines, Vance Joy, Banks, Mitski, The Naked and Famous, Houndmouth etc...)

Oct. 14 - The New Pornographers

Oct. 24 - Japandroids

...and I got on the waiting list for tickets to see The National in December as well, so fingers crossed...

Yup, saw him play an old church here in NJ - solo acoustic with the walk around at end.  Played a row from me for one song.

Fun week ahead:

Better Than Ezra tonight

Delain and Hammerfall Saturday night

Devin The Dude on Thursday night

Frightened Rabbit last night was amazing. Setlist was pretty perfect (surprisingly heavy on The Midnight Organ Fight, though, I guess when you've released the best album by anyone in the last decade, you play it). They made a big deal about the show being sold out (the only one on their tour that sold out months in advance, at a good size venue too). There was a nice acoustic set in the encore of "Die Like a Rich Boy" and "My Backwards Walk". A couple songs that really came out live vs. recorded were "Things", "Lump Street" and "Square 9".

The opening act was Torres who got a lot of FFA love a couple years back with "Strange Hellos".

Setlist was:

  • Get Out
  • Holy
  • The Modern Leper
  • I Wish I Was Sober
  • Living in Colour
  • Little Drum
  • Nothing Like You
  • Head Rolls Off
  • Woke Up Hurting
  • Things
  • Fast Blood
  • Good Arms vs. Bad Arms
  • Old Old Fashioned
  • The Oil Slick
  • Square 9
  • The Woodpile
  • Lump Street
-----------------

  • Die Like A Rich Boy (Scott solo)
  • My Backwards Walk (Scott solo)
  • Death Dream
  • Keep Yourself Warm

I bought tickets to see Phoenix in Munich while we're there in September on the weekend as well   (missing them in Toronto this weekend, so worked out well).

Saw an interesting set of shows last weekend - both of which are strong candidates for my end of the year Top 10.

Thursday was Mumford and Sons in Camden, NJ at the shed.  I only know the hits, but man they were really good.  Even with the unplanned 35 minute delay for lightning, rain and thunder, I was really impressed as the show never lost the steam with the delay.  Cool stage backdrop with a building decaying during the timeline of their set.  I'd say see them on this tour,  it that was the last headlining set of a small group of shows for M&S this year here in the U.S. of A.

Followed that up on Friday with Eric Church in Nashville.  Yes, that is not a typo.  Say what you want about the modern country "stars", at least Church sings all his songs (no hip hop lyrics or beats) and his band throws down a mean heavy metal vibe at times.  Eric played 41 songs across 3+ hours to a packed arena, so definitely your money's worth.  Completely open stage setup, they took full advantage of it with some unique light sequencing at times as the entire band ex drummer made their way to the nine mic placements.  I'd say see him on this tour, but that was the next to the last show (next night was the last one).  Put it this way, I've seen Church before on other tours.  So after Friday's show, liked it so much that I was considering going again the next night (even under the premise that 36-37 songs would be in the exact same slot/stage show), until the resale market went majorly against me in the afternoon (we paid $40 for Friday just 60 minutes to show time and Saturday tickets went to $175 that day).

May 7th - Opeth/Gojira/Devon Townsend  Starland Ballroom, Sayerville, NJ  Was really interested to see Townsend and he didn't disappoint.  What a great set even though I wasn't familiar with all of the songs.  Would love to see him in a larger venue as the headliner. Gojira was just a death metal blast furnace of energy.  Opeth played a great set of old and new even though I'm not a big fan of the "new" prog Opeth.

May 25th - Tool   I believe this Hershey, PA show was a last minute add to their tour schedule.  My 1st Tool show/experience.  Didn't really live up to the hype but definitely glad I got to see them.

June 4th - Iron Maiden/Ghost B.C.

June 28th - Fates Warning

July 9th - King Crimson

July 13th - Foreigner / Cheap Trick

July 27th - Boston, Joan Jett

August 9th - Roger Waters

August 26th - Gary Clark, Jr. <-Still on my "definitely maybe" list

Lady Antebellum was awesome last night at the Hollywood Bowl.  They are just pros now.  Added a horn section and their band is airtight.  Tons of hits and the encores were interesting.  Didn't see Hillary and Kelsea Ballerini killin' Beyonce's Crazy in Love coming.  Saw what you want about Country, but acts like Eric Church, Lady Antebellum, Kenny Chesney, Tim McGraw - they do concerts right.  You get your money's worth.  2 1/2, 3 hour shows

I don't think too much of what passes for country music these days but wanted to echo what you said about Kenny Chesney. I saw him at the last FarmAid at Hershey (2102 maybe?) and he and his band were very good. I don't care for his music but playing good is playing good, and by the time it was their turn to get off the stage (there are a lot of acts to fit in at FarmAid) they were just getting warmed up. There was a couple a few rows in front of us standing, and the woman really just wanted to get out of there and ####. She was dancing with the music but mostly looking down to make sure she was showing enough boob, and grinding her hips and crotch against the guy she was with who was totally into Chesney. You could read his mind as he'd kiss her and then look back at the stage: "wow, she really wants it now, but damn it THAT'S KENNY".

Agree, but my concern with the bold part is outside of the just concluded Eric Church tour, it's 90 minutes max of the headliner and 75 minutes of relative nobody's in support that have at best one good song.

(Gets on soapbox) The Dierks Bentley tour is the only one this year with a support artist (Cole Swindell) that has actually had TWO albums of #1 hits rather than just one recent hit song.  And maybe Florida Georgia Line with Nelly as the opener.  No, that is not a typo - Nelly.

A few years back, Jason Aldean went out with Luke Bryan opening, which then led to Luke Bryan headlining the following year and FGL opening.  Those were quality lineups.  Chesney always has a quality 2nd headliner in support + at least one other strong opener.

Lastly, here is a recent example from last weekend.  One of my local sheds just had an anniversary show with Thomas Rhett headlining, Dan + Shay and Granger Smith as the two main support acts, then about four other folks I never heard of before.  IMO, Rhett barely qualifies as a headliner and only if he has a better support act than D + S or Granger. (gets off soapbox)

All that being said, thanks for the heads up on the Lady A show.  Was on the fence about going to see them this summer because of the above, but I'll now add them to my summer intinerary due to your positive post on their show.

Picked up Tickets for Sammy Hagar and the Circle/Collective Soul in Clearwater FL in Sept. Its an outdoor show right by the water...cant wait for that one.

Adam Ant and Psychedelic Furs coming to Clearwater in September.  Adam Ant cancelled the last time I went to see him in Milwaukee in the late 90s.  That was a bummer.

Traffic should be fun in Channelside.
We had literally zero problem getting in or out.

Spent 2 hours at the tasting room at Cigar City brewing before the show, then stopped for about an hour at Ferg's to watch some hard rock cover band.  At one point, I think they had an 11 year old kid playing drums on "For Whom the Bell Tolls."

Show was unbelievable.  Place was packed for Ghost to open and they killed in only 45 minutes.  They're headed for really big things.  Maiden took the stage and kicked everyone's ### for 2 hours.  People probably think these guys are a novelty act now like the Stones.  No sir.  Bruce is still doing ####ing leaps off the drum riser, they sound every bit as good as they did 30 years ago.  High energy, technical perfection, tighter than Tom Thumb's ###.  They're as good a rock show as you're ever going to see.  Ageless.  I was blown away.

If anyone reading this has the opportunity to go see them, do it.  Even if you're not a rabid fan.

Saw Maiden last week in Newark, totally agree, they absolutely crushed it. They continue to put out high quality music and are just killer in concert. Thinking of going to see them again next month in Brooklyn

Tomorrow night St. Paul & The Broken Bones with Shovel's & Rope opening. Really going for S&R but I've heard good things about St. Paul.

Saturday night Slightly Stoopid.

Both shows at Wolf Trap.

Saw them for the first time in Michigan last week and thought they were great. Not much in terms of stage presence, but on absolute point musically and a cool video / laser montage throughout the show made up for them not really doing anything on stage but playing their music.

Very cool show for sure.  I my biggest take away was the strangeness of Maynard.  "my God he's a freaking alien".  The visuals were fantastic.

His voice is still awesome.  I felt a bit weird as a 49 year old going wild over a 10' Eddie walking across the stage.  :headbang:
Still having that voice at his age is seriously impressive.  Metal isn't quite my thing (I went to the Metallica/GnR tour knowing that was rock music history in the making; saw Skid Row right when they hit it big, but only because they were the opening act for Bon Jovi so I doubt that counts).  I'm glad it's out there for people to enjoy (can't deny the energy) and this era we're in where bands can still book shows 30-40 years after forming is fascinating to me.

To demonstrate what's a bit more my speed.. last month I saw Hall & Oates with Tears For Fears.  I had a great time, but it was clear the vocalists are past their primes.  Curt Smith can't hit the high notes anymore, so they added a female backup vocal to fill out the sound, letting Curt stay in his current range and adding a harmony to mirror the sound of the original track.  Darryl Hall is still a great singer but he can't sing high other than falsetto, so the band rearranged their hits in lower keys and added more musical improvision in spots where Darryl used to sing high over everything.

Don't post much in this thread but am a heavy lurker.  Been getting out and seeing more live music the last few years, and I have a 14-year-old who enjoys playing and seeing shows, so that's fun.  Enjoy reading about what concerts folks here are going to and what's on the docket for the next few months.

That's cool.  I love just about all genres of music - I'm just as likely to be at that H&O show as I'm a death metal show.  Except country - I tried it, I can't do it (although I do have some Johnny Cash in my library that gets semi-regular play).  I just love live music in general.  I hadn't seen IM in 30 years so I wasn't sure how it would be. But yeah, Bruce is still belting it out pretty strong without altering the songs.

Saw Train/O.A.R. last Friday in Holmdel, NJ - seen both the acts previously as headliners.  Solid show, thought O.A.R. was great, but missed the length of their typical headlining set.  Decent cover of "Born to Run" to close out their set.  Train was good again, noticed some lineup changes in the guitars.  Lots of their hits plus the new material was decent enough.  Pretty much stuck to the standard set list they have used early in the tour.  Had O.A.R's frontman and horns out for a cover of Paul Simon's "You Can Call Me Al" (?) which seems to be a nightly event.  Still worth seeing.

Sunday we caught Radio 104.5's 10th Anniversary show with The Killers/Foster the People/Bleachers/Kaleo in Camden, NJ.  Never heard of Kaleo before but was glad I caught their set.  Need to dig into their stuff more.  Bleachers and Foster the People were OK, nothing great about them.  Had seen The Killers before and was impressed the first time to make this show a must-see just for them, but they kind of disappointed.  They opened with a lights on "Mr. Brightside", but Brandon Flowers' vocals were not crisp.  Maybe it was due to the layoff (they only had three shows so far in 2017, with the previous night in AC being the most recent one for three months), but he never really seemed to hit a stride.  "Runaways" was fantastic and the only song that met the level when I had seen them previously.  They are getting ready for another album cycle, so I'll go back and hope this one was an off night.

This weekend, we have Bryan Adams - Neil Diamond - U2 lined up.  Glad I have a Monday off day...

I saw Queen+Adam Lambert last night in Phoenix. It is a great show and quite a spectacle. I did not know much about Adam Lambert but I now love the guy. Very theatrical and funny. I may have developed a man crush.

Interesting how they incorporated small snippets of Mercury on the screen during the show. At one point it was set up to look like Mercury and May were singing together. I have to admit I got misty watching it. I dont think I was alone.

Just got back from Day 1 at Arroyo Seco Fest.  Basically on Brookside golf course next to the Rose Bowl.  I gotta say, Golden Voice knows what they are doing.  We had VIP section, which was basically a fenced off area along the tree line of one of the holes.  Could put chairs underneath great shade trees.  Can't imagine being in GA in the full sun.  They also had umpteen food options all over the place, multiple beer and cocktail sections. Never took more than a few minutes to grab a beer, something to eat, or take a leak.  The shuttle bus from Parsons was awesome.  We were there and back in 10 minutes, unlike the normal insanity trying to leave the Rose Bowl.

Here's who we saw:

Jade Jackson - Mike Ness from Social Distortion produced her debut album.  Good but man she must have had some dark times.  She joked that everyone told her her songs were too depressing so she needed something more positive, so she then broke into "Loneliness".  Some good songs though - talented writer

Preservation Hall Jazz Band - Always great.  Seen them at Doheny Blues Festival and other festivals.  High energy.  Great to see so many people into them

Live - Great to see the original band back.  Very good performance, though it was a bummer when Ed started singing the first track and there was no sound for 20 seconds. Someone ran out with a new mic and saved it.  They finished strong. Would definitely see them touring.

Dawes - Saw them for about 30 minutes.  Not really my jam but you can see the talent was there

Charles Bradley & His Extraordinaires - AWESOME.  It was like James Brown with better vocals.  Man can this old dude bring it.  Don't make many showmen like this anymore.

Alabama Shakes - I love Brittany Howard and she was great as always. I just don't how in an hour show she doesn't play Always Alright and Hold On, especially with some new fans and trying to get the crowd up for Petty.  But maybe that was just me.  Everyone in my group that was seeing the Shakes for the first time loved them, bought merchandise, etc.  Generational talent.

Tom Petty - Excellent.  Heartbreakers were tight and although Tom seems less spry these days they had a ton of energy and didn't miss a note. Show announced for Hollywood Bowl in September.  40th anniversary - don't know when I'll get a chance to see him again

My back prevented too much walking and the stage timing conflicted, so didn't get over to see John Mayall or The Meters.  Seem them both before though.  All in all a great first Arroyo Seco Fest put on by Golden Voice.  I'll go next year.
