Part time work suggestions? (1 Viewer)

Wife wants to get back into the workforce but with a big caveat - wants it maybe 20 - 30 hours a week, and no summers. Essentially while the kids are in school. She's very intelligent (Masters in Engineering) and has time to do more training for whatever she goes into. So, most options are on the table.

School related jobs seem to be few and far between in the area, unfortunately. Any suggestions? Anyone else's spouse have a similar situation? Thanks.

It is somewhat easy to get a school related job as a para-pro or a teachers aid. If 10 - 15 an hour is OK with her.

Your wife has a masters in engineering and is a stay at home mom? You are doing this wrong. What kind of engineer is she? For a job, can she go to a temp agency and be a "consulting engineer" for the number of hours she wants to work. I am sure there is a huge demand for her skill set.

Escort. Work a few hours a week for $200/hour.

Edit: Serious answer - what type of engineering? Any possibility of doing some consulting-type work with companies in the area?

I figured this would be the first response. I'm impressed it took this long.

... she said no.

Electrical. Didn't love it. Thus the asking for suggestions. Thanks for the info, though.

What did she not like about it? There's so many different things she could do with that level of education. What exactly was she doing?

Substitute teacher. Pick the jobs. Part days or full days. Can even land a longer term (2-6 weeks) if she wants.

Probably couldn't conduct herself properly.

True, but with her degree she should be able to plug herself right back into a solid paying job.

I couldn't resist.

Maybe we need a bit more info here. Is she looking for a job to kill time or make money? The possibilities are endless if it is the former. Out of curiosity, what in the world do you do where your wife that can probably make $200K+ per year decides to stay at home and not use her degree?

Pretty much. You see, there's this thing called an upper-decker...

She was in automotive actually did various gigs ( mostly paperwork/meetings), and just hated it all. I know there's probably more out there but she's soured on the whole thing. I won't convince her otherwise.

Let me get this straight:

Your wife has an advanced degree in a pretty high paying field but won't work because she didn't like it? Did I get that right?

how does her keester look in yoga pants becuase if there is one thing that old tom has taught me it is that if you got a nice yoga keester meester than you automaticlaly live at the beach taking pictures of coffee you apparently do not drink take that to the bank bromigos

I would be really pissed if I married a chick with a Master's in engineering that stopped using after we got married. I'd feel lied to. You know that's one of the things you considered when you decided to marry you and she's ####ed you over.

Especially if money is tight for you, which it must be since she's looking for part-time work.

Your pimp hand is weak dude, start loaning money.

Man, she must have been making some good bank after 10 years. I'm not sure I'd let my wife just walk away from that much money without putting up a serious fight.

Money isn't necessarily tight if she's looking for a part time job. It can be just a reason to get out of the house and spend time with people. As a Mr. Mom, I can see where she's coming from. If money was tight, she'd be looking for a full time job.

I'm good with her staying home with the kids. We're doing fine $-wise, thanks. She just wants to work. If it were a need she'd be serving burgers tomorrow.

This is what makes the FFA and the FBG site still pretty cool IMO. People helping people or trying to help, its awesome. I haven't read the whole thread yet but this is terrific advice IMO.

How much did that useless education cost?
No s hit
$0 - Scholarship. She also worked 10+ years using said degree. If that makes you feel any better.
It doesn't make me feel better at all. Make sure your wife understands that. Because how I feel is the most important thing.
Lol. Noted.

I probably could have explained the situation a bit better from the getgo. But I kind of was just looking for job suggestions regardless of financial situations.

Can anyone point me to one of these $200K/year engineering jobs?
You live in Michigan right? They aren't there. HTH.
Any of the big three or many of the suppliers to the big three. I worked on the Leer BK and was flabbergasted at the salaries of their employees. Believe me these guys and gals were not jumping ship either.
Maybe I'm out of touch with salaries in my field and area but I don't think Senior engineers are regularly pulling in 200K around hereMaybe some VP/Director types, but this thread makes it sound like you can go from SAHM to 200K off a 10 year layoff at the drop of a hat
