Aruba - anybody know stuff? (1 Viewer)

Wife and I, and two other couples are planning a trip to the islands in mid-June. So based on an old thread, we looked up the Divi All Inclusive. Looks like that's our best bet based on the cost aspect. One of the couples just had a kid so they're on a tighter budget, and the all inclusive really appealed to them. But my wife and I aren't against going off the resort and spending money anyway if there's something really worthwhile.

First thing, anybody know anything about this particular place that's out of the ordinary or that we should know, good or bad? How's the nearby casino? And next, anything about Aruba cuisine, culture, anything that we should be checking out?

TIA!

Stayed at Bucuti and Tara for two weeks, place was amazing... If you could rally the budgets a little, I can't recommend it enough.

Cheap breakfast but absolutely awesome, Linda's Dutch Pancake house, it's a must.

Madame Janettes, fantastic!

Passions on the Beach was great and close by

Flying Fishbone was good, it'll prob be highly recommended, but I wouldn't put it on my "must" list.

El Gaucho was a good meal

Baby Beach is worth a trip

Outside of that, such a relaxing vacation

Again, Bucuti and Tara, adults only, very spaced out beach, absolutely awesome...

Great island, possibly my favorite tropical destination.

I stayed at Divi in October. We did not go all inclusive and it was a bit of a pain. I enjoyed the restaurant at Divi (Windows over Aruba) and there's some beach restaurant just north of the resort that's got great reviews.

Flying Fishbone is so damn far away. We probably made our last trip there. There are other restaurants affiliated with the all-inclusive, but I didn't want to have to mess around with wristbands and the like, so have no input there. The Divi beach was solid and if you can get ocean fronting cabins, that'd be the way to go.

ETA: I was very unimpressed with the Alhambra casino (sp?), but I was looking for a book. Sports betting down there looked awful, with the country taking a healthy rake. There were half a dozen BJ tables between 3-10 bucks, but we went during the afternoon. Seemed to get busier in the evening.

The Divi shuts down hard about 9-10. If you want nightlife (possibly outside of the casino), you're going off site.

We rented w car for Fishbone, not worth it with all the good restaurants to chose from that are much closer

Awesome, I'll check these out. Lots of good suggestions, thanks

Nice, I'd like to PM you when we're closer to pick your brain on a few things. For now though, how is it getting chairs in the morning either at the beach or the pool (preferably beach)? Some of the reviews were saying you hadda get up real early on to claim them.

Also, obv you went in October but anybody got anything on weather in mid-June?

Crappy drive and while Aruba is one of the more pleasant islands when you're off the resort, still not a place I am eager to get lost in (or pick up a DUI).

Think Taxi was 90 round trip. On top of the cost of the meal...can get more bang for your buck other places.

Passions was the place I was thinking of. We were kicking around the idea of going there, but just went to Windows again. I was pleasantly surprised by the quality and it was close.

Weather shouldn't vary too much year round. Highs around 90, mainly sunny, some wind.

We stayed in Divi Village, near the front pool, so my pool/beach experience probably would be different than yours staying in the all-inclusive.

We wandered down that way a few times and the Cabanaesque places near the pool did seem to fill up early. There's enough beach that I didn't see an issue there at all. Both for the strips of beach immediately in front of the all-inclusive or the larger Divi Beach across from the golf course.

If you have to get up early, I think it would only be for the two trendy pools (one at Tamarinj, one at the all inclusive.)

Cool - are there more than two pools? What we looked up it looked like just the two. Sorry for the total ignorance, but what is Divi Village? Is that the same thing as Tamarinj?

Also, I mis-spoke. The concern wasn't about getting chairs, it was about getting shade. I saw those tiki hut type things all over the beach, but I assume there are a finite amount of those. That's the bigger concern with my pasty white skin :)

Yeah my go-to is SPF 15 on the beaches of Jersey, SPF 30 pretty much anywhere else in the world. I think Puerto Rico is the furthest south / closest to the equator I've ever been. Might have to start on my base tan like, now...

I went last June but stayed on the far north end next to the kite surfing place. It was a company trip so most everything was pre planned/paid and didn't spend a lot of time away from the hotel. We had dinner at the restaurant with semi private beds, food was solid. The catamaran tour around the island was cool, some decent snorkel at deserted beach and sunken ship. If you guys need any yayo, x, or hookers I still have the number of a guy, his name is Max, real solid dude.

Screaming Eagle is the bed restaurant:

I have stayed at the Links at Divi. The area around the Divi All Inclusive, has the Divi and Tamarijn which are All Inclusives, plus there is Dutch Village, Divi Village and the Divi Links Golf Villas

http://www.mappery.com/maps/Divi-Resort-Aruba-Map.jpg

It is one property but 5 different places. Dutch Village, Divi Village and the Golf Villas are Time Shares. A friend of ours owns a time share in the Golf Villas, that is where we stayed in 2011 and 2012. Since we did the time shares, we did not go All Inclusive, but we did purchase a meal plan, 5 breakfasts/5 dinners for a 7 day stay. Even with the time shares, you can purchase an all inclusive package. We basically just followed the lead of our friends, took some food with us as well as some bottles of booze, then went to the local grocery stores and (IGA and a couple others that i can't remember the names) to buy mainly easy to make snacks and beer. Balashi is the local Aruban beer and is pretty good. I actually like the Polar beer which is from Venezuela. The beach is beautiful, although, from what our friend has said, some erosion has taken place since we were there. but that was mainly at the water's edge.

Between the Tamarijn and Divi there was an opening of beach that went from the road to the water, this is where we went. They had tiki huts with chaise lounges, you would need to get to these in the morning as they do get taken quickly. They were not close to the water, maybe 75yds away, but they did help protect you from the sun. The sun can be brutal. Temps would be about 90-95 rarely any cloud coverage, low humidity and windy (say 10-15 and at times will gust up.)

If you got Irish skin, plan on using at least SPF45 and maybe higher. The water is awesome, clear and warm (say in the 80s) with very little waves, Clear enough that you can see ripples in the sand when you are neck deep. We took those foam noodles with us and would use those to float in the water. I can't remember if you said that kids would be with you, but at times, you may see topless sunbathers/swimmers. Remember, this is more of a European culture than American.

Never went to the Alhambra Casino, but if anything, it is gonna be more slots and table games (my guess as the people that i know that have went there are slot players)

Right off property on the other side of the casino is a little joint called Pizza Bob's, nice little outdoor pizza joint. They do a Chicago style thin crust (not deep dish)

Another restaurant we went to was called the Promenade. If i can remember correctly, it would be like a Tapas place, all you can eat appetizers, but not buffet style.

Can't remember if it was only on the weekend, as we went there usually the 1st/2nd day there (saturday/sunday) but there is an outdoor flea market to get trinkets and shirts/hats/dresses, Cuban cigars. you can usually do a little bit of haggling.

Oh, one other thing about the Divi property, they have, i guess you can call them porters, that will drive you around in golf carts, you can even call the front desk to have them come around to pick you up. This is a great way to get around the property (they only stay on property) But for the grocery store/flea market they will take you close and then it was just a quick walk across the street to some of these places. Then you can tell them what time to pick you up and the will come back to get you.

We wanted a more relaxed vacation so we mainly stayed on the property. Our meal plan was for one restaurant, The Sea Breeze, but we didn't eating here everyday, food was good. Outside seating. There are quite a few pools, (looking at the map) but we only went to the pool in the Golf Villas as that was close to us and right out our balcony door. It did have a swim-up bar, not sure of the others. There was a pool near the Sea Breeze that was smaller, but it did have the bar at Sea Breeze right there.

If you're doing all inclusive I feel like you're gonna miss a lot of great food, but if you feel like eating out go to:

Daniels Steak and Chop. Best steak/prices on the island all around.

Passions on the beach is a good place for a romantic dinner. I believe they ban children from the restaurant and it's mostly beach dining.

Matthew's Beachside has the best breakfast hands down on the island (if you want more traditional "American" breakfast) Their home fries come with bacon and onion bits, amazing.

Bavaria is a great place for some Austria/German cuisine.

Zuzuroh is a little out of the way, and sort of a hole in the wall but it has excellent Greek/Italian fusion foods. Some of the best veal around.

There's some chain type places that are fun and nearby, like Texas de Brasil.

Madamme Janette's is super overrated IMO.

Went all inclusive at Divi. One of the best weeks of my life. It's beautiful. We took one day to tour the island, but spent almost the entire week on the beach. The bar on the beach makes a decent pina colada and the local Balashi beer hits the spot. Little markets pop up that sell Cubans. Jesus christ I belong there, I need to go back.

Don't forget Charlie's Bar on the way to/from Baby's Beach. Keep going past Baby's Beach and you'll hit a pet cemetery and then the east side beaches where all the wind surfers hang out. You can find some cool pools between the breaks and be all by yourself. Or at least it used to be that way.

Also, fyi, it's not a tropical island, more of a desert once you get off the hotel beaches where they've planted palm trees. Softest sand in the world though and tons of great diving.

People complain about it being too breezy but it didnt bother me at all.

Oh and also its supposedly outside of the hurricane belt but my friend went there a few years after us and they actually got hit with a hurricane.

This.

And it's windy ALL. THE. TIME. And not just 5mph winds either.

Thought the steady trade winds were a good thing. If there was no wind, you would cook. You're only like 12 degrees from the equator.

You still cook, you just don't notice it as much, which isn't always a good thing.

broad question here, but never been and was looking to surprise the wife with a trip, if I went all inclusive (just seems much easier and we can always venture out to eat a meal somewhere else, no biggie) from Houston what would be a good range to expect it to cost two of us all in. Would prefer the best deal, doesnt have to be the cheapest place, just nice, for adults, etc.

Exactly.

Either way, I found the CONSTANT wind annoying after a while. Tolerable, but annoying.

Depends on time of year of course, but including flight, I would budget about $700-800/night for the two of you at an AI. When I was researching Aruba from NYC, I was looking at around $3500-$4000 for 5 nights.

iirc the sun there is serious business.. id limit the exposure
My first day there, we arrive at around 3:00. Dropped our stuff at our room and went out to the beach at 4:00. I just brought a book (and got beverages) and sat under one of the cabanas for a couple hours - and got FRIED. Here's my warning: even the reflection of the sun off the beach sand can (and will) fry you.

For anyone fair-skinned, I would suggest SPF50 at a minimum.

We didn't do all inclusive and explored. We did one of those all day 4x4 excursions. It was so fun and we covered ever inch of the island. We were exhausted at the end of the day though and covered from head to toe in dirt/grime.

I heard that natural bridge collapsed shortly after

Not gonna lie, I'm getting a little freaked out about all this sunburn talk. I don't usually burn, but it's because I put on sunblock 2x a day and I gradually work my way up to the Caribbean sun by hitting the Jersey shore for six weeks prior. This will be in early/mid June, so it'll be kind of first sun exposure of the year. Maybe I'll just wear a sweater and yoga pants everywhere I go.

Even if we wanted to nix the all-inclusive aspect, we're out voted on it. No biggie, I'm sure if it's cool I'll go back with just the lady at some point.

Far as cost goes, we're looking at $4k/couple including flight which I think is is pretty good. Using discount-all-inclusive, which helped us when we planned a trip to an all inclusive in Mexico back in 07

Dude you've seen me. Im not much darker than you. Youll be fine. Just use sunblock.

Honestly, if you wanna do All Inclusive Id goto another island but thats just my opinion. The other islands you never wanna leave the resort. Aruba, we left the resort pretty much every day.

We considered Jamaica too, not really sure why that got ruled out to be honest. Seems like that's more of an all inclusive type of place from what I've heard

It is. Jamaica is the one place where you are better off staying on the resort and doing all inclusive. It's a dirt poor trashy country otherwise.

I was there years ago during the summer. We lived in Houston at the time and we went to Aruba to go somewhere cooler.

Anyway, it was a pleasant 80 something degrees and I we were out and around fairly early in the morning and I didn't have sunscreen on. By late morning I had a really bad sunburn.

So yeah, don't screw around with the sun when you get that near the equator.
