DI Jukebox Draft (66-15)- Listen up (1 Viewer)

PIK95 > you owe picks for Round 15, 16, 17
I noticed that some of picks are missing on the sheet.  I tried to go back and bump, but page navigation on my phone is a nightmare.  I know my two AF acordian songs are missing at a minimum.  There may be more.

I strongly considered She's So High for my 1999 pick.

Waiting on a Friend is one of my all time favorite videos. I love how Mick and Keith are just hanging out.

Sure; sorry.  Post all missing picks in a big flashing post and Acer or I will add them in.

Thanks.  Sheet was missing only Sister Havana by Urge Overkill.  Added now, but check your list on the sheet to make sure.

19.a     Fleetwood Mac, "The Chain" (1977)

The only song on _Rumours_ written as any sort of collaboration, and it shows a bit in the very prominent role for the rhythm section (for whom the band *was* named, after all).  The vocal interplay between Buckingham, Nicks, and McVie is fantastic, as are the two guitar parts in the verses, the angry lyrics, and of course, the awesome bass break near the song's end.  A masterpiece.

19.b     Steve Winwood, "Higher Love" (1986)

1986 was a very deep year for me; I was in high school and listening to almost everything that came out.  However, despite three other strong contenders (including one in close vicinity to the selection I chose), I had to take this clinic in 80s rock/pop.  Normally, I despise synth bass (although I think this part was actually played on a bass guitar and then laden with effects); here I love it.  Winwood's vocals are perfect and Chaka Khan's wailing during the breakdown is ethereal.  It's no surprise that there are terrific and varied keyboards, and the various infectious guitar riffs add a nice bit of tension.  Add in some horns and some really interesting percussion, and this is another timeless gem.  As a bonus, it's almost unsingable, so there has only been only one cover version of any note, and those attempting to cover it on the various singing shows have failed spectacularly.

20 - Lithium - Nirvana (1991)

I drafted this song last draft, but I need it on my jukebox to close out the bar every night...

20 - Closing Time - Leonard Cohen (1992)

Ah we're drinking and we're dancing
and the band is really happening
and the johnny walker wisdom running high
And my very sweet companion
she's the angel of compassion
she's rubbing half the world against her thigh
And every drinker every dancer
lifts a happy face to thank her
the fiddler fiddles something so sublime
all the women tear their blouses off
and the men they dance on the polka-dots
and it's partner found, it's partner lost
and it's hell to pay when the fiddler stops
it's CLOSING TIME

I didn't enter my picks on the spreadsheet, cause I don't want to mess anything up, but I did notice on the spreadsheet that my song Return of the Grievous Angel said 1999 as the year, but it is 1974. I changed the year.

20.a         Seven Mary Three, "Cumbersome" (1995)

This amazing track has been called "the best Pearl Jam song ever" and drawn similar praise for these unfortunately one-hit wonders who met while attending William & Mary.  This is a perfect "post-grunge" song, lacking only the Fender Rhodes or Hammond B-3 part that I adore in this sort of music, but the lyrics of this one are so fascinating that it doesn't really matter.  The guitar part somehow straddles between sounding like it was recorded in a garage on a four-track and coming off as slickly produced, and there are a few unexpected musical flourishes, especially toward the end.  As a bonus, any song with a bass break (here at 2:25) automatically gets my attention, but here it's accompanied by lyrics that sound like something out of science fiction ("There is a balance between two worlds/One with an arrow and a cross/Regardless of the balance life has become/Cumbersome) and the interlude ends with a screaming pick slide.  Love it.

20.b          Kenny Wayne Shepherd Band, "Blue on Black" (1997)

Sounding like a fusion between Nirvana and Dylan with a wailing blues-tinged guitar solo to make Stevie Ray Vaughn proud, this song seems to have influenced about 90% of what you hear sung by male vocalists on modern country radio.  The hooks are simple but gripping, the lyrics dealing with regret over a breakup are powerful, and the vocal is understated yet impactful.  I'm a little surprised this one was still available, but I'm not complaining; I've been looking for a reason to listen to this song again for many years.  Mad props to that fantastic lead guitar sound that Shepherd pulls off, including just enough of the edge of the pick when required to attack certain notes.

Round 20

ChairliftI Belong In Your Arms (2012)

AviciiWaiting for Love (2015)

Haven't kept up with music quite as much in the last few years, so my picks for, say, 2013-2015 are more poppy, and I'm fine with that. Avicii has some fantastic pop singles, and while I prefer a couple others from previous years, this one's damn solid. The animated video, with art by Guillaume Singelin, is also fantastic.

Thanks for your hard work.  I'll look when I get on a computer later tonight.

This upgrade is tough on mobile so far.  Hope we keep gifs though.

I had two Arcade Fire songs in the middle of the accordion talk.  No Cars Go and Sprawl II.  I'll check tonight if I had any others not listed.

Well done.  Those 2 songs still sound new even though they have been played to death.

Jerry Garcia, Sugaree -1972

I love this tune, and it fits in my bar.  Also, Mayer cushes it with Dead and Company.

Well done.  Those 2 songs still sound new even though they have been played to death.

Thanks!   :)    I agree; I think you're right about that, for both songs.  The bridge (really an interlude, with the bass and the sci-fi-sounding lyrics ending with the pick slide) on Cumbersome is one of my favorite segments of music ever.
