DI Jukebox Draft (66-15)- Listen up (1 Viewer)

Mulligan #2

If I can't have His Purple Badness himself doing it, it's not going on my playlist (unless someone releases the Ramsay Hunt Shower Sessions).

This is probably going to stick out on my playlist like a sore, gay thumb, but what the hell.  It's my favorite Erasure song.

Erasure -- Love to Hate You -- 1991

FYI-  I can add songs to the playlist on the mobile spotify app, but I don't seem to be able to delete them.  I've added Erasure and Heart already, but I'll delete Night Moves and Gett Off tonight.

Yo Mama picks:

I saved my 2 hardest years for last.  So many great and/or meaningful songs for me to choose from and I'm sure I'll change my mind a day from now.  Every time I looked up a song or album, it seemed like they kept coming up in one of these 2 years.  Here's where I'm landing today, but I'm sure I'll regret not taking one of the other great songs on my list.

26.08 - Stairway to Heaven, Led Zeppelin (1971)

1971 had so many classic songs it was hard to pick one, but I'm taking the most iconic (to me).

26.08 - Interstate Love Song, Stone Temple Pilots (1994)

1994 had a number of albums I really connected to, and passing on a few of them is painful.  Maybe I'll use my mulligans all on this year just so I can pick more than 1.  I don't think anyone has taken an STP song yet, so that was the tiebreaker.

Sorry for the delay... Just got back from bachelor party weekend shenanigans in the desert. Should I post the rest of my picks here or just put them in a spotify list?

So I guess here we go. I figured out how to do this. I think they should keep pictures on the board if it means insets like this. I love these pictures when used with decent humor or utility. Anyway, the mix is a tidy three hours and one minute, which disappoints me. (I want the shortest, leanest, baddest mix.)

eta1* Two of my favorites -- "Scream Clown Scream" by The Dancing French Liberals of '48 and "Raw Chaw" by Lee Perry are unavailable -- so I picked a Specials song and a Rip Offs (the track listing has the name wrong. Yo mang, I know, I wuz there.) song from that era. Close enough, eh?  Oh, and the Danger Mouse song won't fly because of copyright law, but you can look it up on You Tube. I feel like those three songs are pretty important to the flow and eclecticism of the mix, especially since the Beatles' "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" and Jay's rap segues into Similak Child, but oh well. So I subbed out "What More Can I Say?" for "Encore" off of the same album because the vibe is jazzier and smoother.

eta2* I also had to sub out Dead Kennedys' 1982 Bleed For Me for 1982's Buzzbomb because Bleed For Me was unavailable, or at least it seemed so. I Am The Owl is a better song off of Plastic Surgery Disasters, anyway -- I just spit the bit on that one.

eta3* And subbed out "The Next ####" by Pharoahe and Busta for "Hip Hop" by Mos Def. Same year. Internal Affairs, the album off of which "The Next ####" came from, was unavailable. For all concerned, the real list is on this page, a few scrolls up. I like that one better.

eta4* And I subbed out "Rent I Pay" by Spoon for "New York Kiss" from the same album, because if I'm taking all these hits, I get a Spotify mulligan. Yes! This guy!

eta5* So the Spotify mix is less than the original mix, IMO, and I had to adjust a bunch of songs per availability. Long story short. Peace, and thanks to everybody for running this. I'm going to get heavily into the mixes at some point with particular stuff that I don't know of in the front, because I'm always on a quest.

Since this is the music nerd thread du jour, it's as good a place as any to recommend Spike Lee's Michael Jackson documentary on Showtime.  It covers the period up to his solo breakthrough Off the Wall with an emphasis on the making of that album.   The project was authorized by the Jackson family so there's excellent access to footage and interview subjects at the cost perhaps of some objectivity.  My only gripe, as with almost all music docs, is that the musical performances are truncated but there's some incredible video of MJ's emergence as a superstar.

Anyone else having problems getting onto Spotify? I keep getting "service unavailable" when I try to log in.
I'm not at the moment, but I got that message over the weekend. It was ok after a bit. The board is opening windows really slow for me right now.

I have it on DVR and have watched it like five times.  Good stuff.

This should finish it out. I'll get the spotify list going asap

hey y'all. I'm super busy this week. I'll finish up and post a full Spotify playlist this weekend. If you see me posting in the Hillary thread, that just means I'm sitting on the pot, and not that I am shirking responsibilities here.

I'm still not sure what part of "Going to be Amway distributor" got me to pick "Weird Al" in a music draft.

But it was funny at the time. I was sailin'.

What the heck is with the images and embedded stuff? When I want it to work, it doesn't, when I don't, it does. But this did win three Grammys, according to You Tube, so there's that.

Here's my Spotify link - apparently I drafted 51 songs, so I left Neil Young off, since he isn't on Spotify anyway. Can be played chronologically and will be grouped in genres if it is played that way, but also meant that anyone could go and pick a random song they loved - tried to span a bunch of genres with 5-7 songs from each.

Also, maybe we should have our spotify usernames somewhere central for those who are interested in friending/following each other on there?

This song was the soundtrack for one of the most memorable moments of my childhood. The year was 1985.  Imagine a ten year old PIK with a big gulp cola and burned popcorn in a bag, sitting in the local theater fantasizing about a time machine made out of an exotic sports car .  Seeing Back to the Future with my brother was one of the best experiences I had up to that point in my young life.

But on this day I am not talking about the power of love. I am not talking about Chuck Berry's cousin Marvin.  I am talking about a extended double box truck, carrying a small foul mouthed black man, and a hundred grand in stolen cigarettes.  Foul mouthed?  FU(% YOU!  I am talking about a Beverly Hills Cop and......

2003 has some great stuff.  I'm gonna take Chingy, Right Thurr - 2003
This didn't sit right with me so I'm switching it to the clean version of..

Like a Pimp, David Banner - 2003

Acer's mix was fairly familar to me.  A lot of great songs that are in my rotation, so obviously I liked the mix.  The songs I put on my mix:

Ironclad, Up On Cripple Creek, Young Fast Scientific, Always on the Run, Nervous Breakdown, Burnin' for You

The Band is just a huge blindspot for me, need to explore that more.  Young Fast Scientific was my favorite of the stuff that I heard before.  I just began to listen to Sleater-Kinney in the last couple years, so I need to dig into their stuff more.  I like all of the songs I have heard so far.  The other 3 were favs of mine that wouldn't usually enter the rotation for me.  Good stuff, Acer.

Looks like sn0mm1s be next.

I will stick with what I drafted, but if I would make a change it would be to take a CCR song from another year and squeeze in Suspicious Minds.
