Roto - Category Studs vs. All-Around Players (1 Viewer)

Did my first roto draft in a while last night and was not as prepared as I should be.  I went much more for all-around players that single cat guys.  I am probably short on power.  In the end, which side do you lean to and which way do you think works out better?

If you study the player rater on any site you will be amazed what steals and saves are worth.  AJ Pollock beat Harper on ESPN, Melancon beat Betts and Bautista, Familia beat Sale and Bryant, Brandon Phillips beat Heyward and Frazier, Billy Hamilton didn't hit at all and beat Cano, Hamels, and Cueto.  Same story every year.  I believe in the player rater so I try to target specialists.

In a similar boat to you, LBL. I'm doing a H2H categories draft tonight and thinking of punting SVs/SBs.  Can still go 8-2 if you dominate the other categories.  Is this the way to go for H2H or is a balanced approach still optimal?

The only problem with the SB specialists is if that guy goes down you're often ####ed

cheap power can usually still be found (at the cost of avg/OBP) but finding a speedster on the WW to replace that SB production can be tough

Years ago I had a lot of success drafting heavy on the power guys early, on the theory that they are 4-category guys. This year I still tried to grab some of them but shifted my mid-rounds to guys like Adam Eaton, Gardner and even Puig, who I think will steal 15 or so if he stays healthy.

Balance and positional flexibility.  Leave yourself as many options as possible as the draft/auction unfolds.  As leaks on your roster pop up in-season use category players on waivers to fill the gaps.

I think you should look for value where available rather than go in with a fixed set of targets.  That usually results in a mix of all-around and category contributors.  You should be aware of the need for category balance during your draft/auction so you don't come out really short in a category.

It's historically been easier to find speed on the waiver wire during the season than power bats although the recent decline in SBs has changed the equation a bit.  Chasing SB works better in roto formats since you can afford to rotate OF4 types and bank a few steals without putting your team at a disadvantage in weekly matchups.
