Seems like a pretty uncommon phenomenon. More often than not, the contracts that are largely criticized for being excessive turn out to validate that criticism.
The only one I can think of off the top of my head is the Eli Manning deal in '09 that made him the highest-paid QB in the league for a while, which he justified over the next couple of seasons.
