San Antonio - what to do with family? (1 Viewer)

We are taking a family vacation to San Antonio in late June and staying near the River Walk. We will have a rental car and are looking for fun things to do. Kids are boys ages 8 and 10. Aside from the big things like Six Flags and Sea World, what are the recommended must-see places?  Will happily take restaurant recommendations as well. Love BBQ, breweries, Mexican food, and kid friendly places. Feel free to let me know what to avoid as well.

Definitely do the river walk cruise. Nice, even in the hot sun, we were there in late June last summer.

Driving or flying?

Gruene.  Spend the afternoon tubing the Guadalupe River (assuming your kids can swim).  This is the best taste of what Hill Country Texas is all about imho.

Eat dinner at Gristmill and watch sunset.  Ask for indoor table with water view.

I would personally take your family and stay a night or two at the JW Marriott over going to Fiesta Texas.  JW is badass.

Fiesta is packed all the time, but I dread going there, my kids (about the same age) aren't really impressed with it either.

Top Golf

There's also a Bowl and Brew if your kids like to bowl (and you want craft beer) and a nice place that just opened that is the indoor parachuting adventure type of thing (wind tunnel or whatever). This is all right across the highway from Fiesta Texas.

i stayed there 2 nights last month.   Its unbelievable, but also not cheap so not sure what the guys budget is.    but if you like golf and a swim park, not to mention incredible grounds and lodging, this place is like the Bellagio without the casino.   Its big and beautiful.

Not cheap, but then neither is taking your family to an amusement park.

I live about 5 minutes from the JW, we do staycations there a couple times per year... we love it, kids love it.

Thanks for all the tips, guys...keep them coming!  I have a ton of Marriott points, so the JW may be something that is pretty feasible.  I'll have to look into it.  If I took a day trip to Austin, any specific recommendations for there?

This sounds like a daytrip, correct?  Any recommended vendors for the tubing?  (Yes, the boys can swim.)  Otherwise I'm assuming we just kind of tour the town for the day and get some history and whatnot.

We are flying into Austin on a Friday, arriving early afternoon.  The following Friday we are driving up to a friend's lake house near Dallas and then flying out Sunday afternoon.

*ETA - this allowed us to have direct flights each way and maximize time on vacation NOT spent in a plane/airport.  Flying into SA would have been connecting.

Yes.. tube during day, relax/eat walk around Gruene in the evening.  Live music, shops, dance hall, Gristmill... good stuff.  Will probably be the most fun you have.

Rent tubes, they will bus you across the street to River, pick you up a few hours later down river.  I would buy some cheap water shoes (like $5 from walamart/target/CVS/Walgreens).. not so worried about glass, but some rocks and stubbed toes might happen.

Austin is 60-90 minutes up the road as well.  Good day trip.
Since we are landing in Austin our first day (early afternoon) the wife was wondering if it would make sense to just do that day in Austin or if it would be better to give it a whole day.  Any specifics of what to do there?

We are getting close to our trip...any further restaurant recommendations?  Will be in SA proper for 4 full days before heading up to the JW Marriott (thanks for the recommendation).  Looking for breakfast/lunch/dinner recommendations to fill up those days.  Already found one good breakfast spot (Guenther House) and wife wants to try out Magnolia Pancake Haus as well.  Any others?

We are probably doing Whiskey Cake for dinner on Father's Day.  Any other suggestions?  We like places with good food and drinks that can be kid friendly.  Not afraid to spend some money if it is worth it, but love value and don't need to be too fancy.

We are following your recommendation here.  Do we need to bring our own inflatables for the lazy river there or do they have some one hand to use?  Still not sure if we can work in Gruene for a day since we now only have four days in SA, but we are trying.

It would make sense to stay in Austin and punt San Antonio completely.

Sorry, too late for that.  Plus from the research it seems that SA has more to do to help us occupy 8 and 10 year old boys than Austin.  But I agree that if we left the kids at home this would be the preferred route.  We will hang in Austin the first day we arrive (flying in to Austin).  Anything specific we must do that day?  Or any restaurants that are essential to have lunch/dinner at?

Do you like BBQ?  There are some great BBQ places in town (j blacks, Lambert's, iron works). The state capital is really nice if you and the family like history.

Love BBQ.  We had planned on hitting up the Bullock Texas state museum and then spend some time at Zilker park.  Those ok or is there anything better?

Also saw something about some food truck parks, was thinking of hitting one of those up for lunch.  Good or bad idea?

Bullock is a great choice. Zilker has Barton springs pool which is usually awesome (not sure if you would want to change to swim) as it's always cold in the water and the day will be hot. From the museum you'll be able to see the tower pretty close although I'm not sure there is a reason to go to it. There are some food truck spots for sure, but if you are only having one meal in Austin before heading out I would suggest terry blacks BBQ. It's close to zilker and pretty good (beef ribs are awesome). Alternately you can go to Chuys next to the park for Tex mex although you'll probably get that in SA.

If you don't want to swim in the springs pool they also have kayaks and canoes in zilker that can be a blast.

I'm not sure what the age range is, but the DoSeum is supposed to be pretty good.

"The DoSeum is San Antonio's only museum just for children where kids learn by doing, creating, and tinkering - instead of just looking and listening."

Thanks a ton for all of this.  We should be there for two meals.  I will put to Terry Blacks as one to hit up.  Any others you like?  (Non-bbq for the second so I don't have the kids revolt on the first day - they like BBQ but not as much as me.)

Are you going to see the bats? I would think your kids would like that.

I want to, and I think I can convince one of the boys.  The wife is definitely against it and the other son has anxiety issues at times.  Hard to say if I can pull this one off.  What happens, like a ####-ton of bats fly out of a cave at once?

Out from under the Congress Street bridge. There's literally like a million bats. And they leave at dusk. So people either line up on the bridge or rent a paddle boat or something and sit in the water.

Here's another hint that I don't like to spread too much. In Rainey Street is a new hotel called the Van Zandt. On their fourth floor is a restaurant/bar Geraldine's. From there, you can walk out onto their pool deck, where they have another bar, lounging areas, etc. Also there's a great view of the bats from there.

if you do zilker in the afternoon you'll be near enough to hop over and see the bats. The ones in round rock are better (#batsnob) but it's still pretty cool.

Austin's restaurant scene has exploded the last few years so it really depends on what they like. For kids 8 and 10 - maybe Franks? Its kind of like an upscale hot dog and sausage restaurant right downtown.

It's called Frank and it's pretty good for hot dogs.  Chuys has good enough Tex mex and a fun vibe. Threadgills has good "home cooking".  Guerros is another good Tex mex place. My favorite place in town is called Swifts Attic. It's a little pricier and maybe should be a dinner choice?

My kids have a surprisingly decent range of what they will eat, just don't like too much repetition.  I am gonna have to either sneak the bats on them without telling or do a heavy sell job.  Sounds fun.

If visiting the River Walk you can hit up Fogo De Chao.  This is a Brazilian steak house my Family loves it.

Bohanan's is an awesome steak house.  Soooo good. Really liked Esquire Tavern too. Both on/near Riverwalk.

I was in San Antonio today. It was muggy as all ####.

Happy I don't live there for so many reasons.

Bentley had young sons here too.  He might have better suggestions than me.
If I was going for lunch anywhere with the boys that had a cool vibe and decent food, I'd go to Banger's.

For outdoor stuff, we like Mount Bonnell for the view and Bull Creek District Park for a hike or swim. Barton Creek Greenbelt is also great if you have some time and want to explore some great natural pools. It's pretty much perfect right now due to the recent rain.

Also agree that Zilker and the Town Lake Trail are great for walking around, particularly if you want to limit your experience to downtown. Austin Nature Center is right there and a good place to kill some time.

Bullock was great for me but doesn't hold the boys' interest. But they're a little younger (7 and 4) than the guys here.

This all assumes that you're looking for active things to do. Honestly, we mostly go to places like Pinballz where they can play video games and I can drink beer but that's not much of a vacation recommendation.

Yes they have tubes at the JW.  No need to bring anything.

@matuski Big Fan here.  First time caller.  Have you tried Cibalo(sp) at JW?
We were at the JW three weeks ago and had a fabulous time. Cibolo Moon breakfast buffet was killer, but I feel like the dinner had slipped significantly from when we were there last summer. BBQ was still good, but the entrees were disappointing.

Ended up with chain Tex-mex.  The boys were getting hungry.  Matuski I did drive be a WalkOns resturaunts.  It started in Baton Rouge.  While not the best Cajun food it is a good alternative.  I highly recommend the Cajundilla.
