Nice.  So France released their roster.  Not a lot of surprises.  No Benz or Valbuena, so I'll be making way less blackmail jokes this summer than I'd like. Biggest surprise to me was Moussa Sissoko making the roster.  Cabaye is also still on the roster.  I have to admit that I had no idea Lass Diarra was still playing.  I don't like the midfield depth, but the Kante and Matuidi should pair great with Matuidi given plenty of freedom to go box to box.    I actually struggled to think of a way to put what I'd consider their best XI on the field, but here's what I think it might look like.

                       Lloris

Jallet       Varane    Koscielny      Evra

               Kante          Matuidi

Payet              Pogba            Griezmann

                       Giroud

Don't discount the possibility however, that Gignac beats out Giroud for the starting striker spot.  He's been lethal in Liga Mx.  I think the rise of Kante lets Deschamps try Pogba in a more advanced #10 role.  France can inject a lot of pace into the attack with Coman and Martial.  France's XI are as good as anybody's and they are at home.   Unlike the last World Cup, I think there's a ton of pressure on Pogba and Griezmann.  These guys are going to be expected to play like one of the five best players in the world.  They both are capable of doing so.

France are kind of my international team of choice behind the USA, so I'm rooting for them.

Belgium roster is out too.

24-man roster that must be cut by one:

Goalkeepers: Thibaut Courtois (Chelsea/ENG), Simon Mignolet (Liverpool/ENG), Jean-Francois Gillet (Mechelen)

Defenders: Toby Alderweireld (Tottenham/ENG), Jan Vertonghen (Tottenham/ENG), Nicolas Lombaerts (Zenit St-Petersburg/RUS), Thomas Vermaelen (Barcelona/ESP), Jason Denayer (Galatasaray/TUR) Dedrick Boyata (Celtic/SCO), Bjorn Engels (Bruges), Jordan Lukaku (Ostende), Thomas Meunier (Bruges)

Midfielders: Moussa Dembele (Tottenham/ENG), Radja Nainggolan (Roma/ITA), Marouane Fellaini (Manchester United/ENG), Axel Witsel (Zenit St-Petersburg), Eden Hazard (Chelsea/ENG), Kevin De Bruyne (Manchester City/ENG), Dries Mertens (Napoli/ITA), Yannick Carrasco (Atletico Madrid/ESP)

Forwards: Mitchy Batshuayi (Marseille/FRA), Romelu Lukaku (Everton/ENG), Christian Benteke (Liverpool/ENG), Divock Origi (Liverpool/ENG)

Reserves: Matz Sels (Gent), Laurent Ciman (Montreal Impact/CAN), Laurens De Bock (Bruges), Guillaume Gillet (Nantes/FRA), Nacer Chadli (Tottenham Hotspur/ENG), Thorgan Hazard (Borussia Moenchengladbach/GER), Kevin Mirallas (Everton/ENG)

Hazard has been named captain, replacing Kompany.

Yeah, my guess is that Belgium disappoint in this tournament, but maybe Hazard goes nuts and carries them.  Wilmots has said that Denayer will replace Kompany, so I guess Vertongen is still a left back for Belgium.  Really not up to speed on Belgian right backs.  Wilmots also still seems to love :fro:  (I suppose that could mean Fellaini or Witsel here, but I meant Fellaini).  I don't see a spot for him.

                              Courtois

RIght Back     Denayer   Alderweireld        Vertonghen

                    Nainggolan    Witsel

Carrasco/Mertens          DeBruyne         Hazard

Lukaku? (Wilmots seems to yank him a lot so who knows?)

I think Alderweireld has been playing RB for them (I know he has in the past, while playing CB for his club, not sure if he is still considered their RB)

ETA - in the last two qualifiers in October 2015 - Alderweireld played RB one game, and CB the next game (Kompany was out, and Alderweireld and Vertonghen played CB).

Thomas Meunier played RB, when Alderweiereld played CB.

Will be in Vegas late June. Had a blast watching the Euro games at the sportsbooks a few years ago with all of the intl folks in town. Can't wait!!

Woy has delayed announcing his official England roster, but that shouldn't stop us from having some fun speculating.  First, a moment of silence for Dat Guy Welbz....

Obviously, the big question for England is probably whether Rooney starts at CAM.  He's the third choice #9 as I see it behind Kane and Vardy (but Vardy could probably play on the left).  Sterling played CAM in the World Cup, but he seems a lock for a wing spot to me.  Probably on the right and maybe Lallana on the left.  So the question is whether Woy has the stones to play Dele Alli ahead of Shrek.  I'd do it, but I'm easily intoxicated by youth and work rate.

I don't know if Hendo is likely to be healthy for the tourney.  If so, I'd expect him and Milner to partner in CM.  Or maybe one of those two with Dier (whose Vinny Jones impression in the Chelsea game did not inspire my confidence in his big game ability).  Back four seems pretty straight forward.  Clyne Smalling Stones Rose.  I assume Hart is in goal, but I think Butland and Forster are both every bit as good.

I always overrate England.  This year, I think they lack quality in the center of the pitch. They got a decent draw and I'd expect them to advance, but the quarter finals feels like their ceiling to me.

I'm still debating going to the USA/Columbia match at levi, some fair ticket prices on the American outlaws message board, the only problem is that they go fast once they are posted.

It's weird, but the Copa really isn't interesting me.  We're getting close to A teams for every country, but I'm not sure how much of a priority it is.

The Euros are always my favorite tournament.  In the 16 team format, there were so few bad games because all the teams were at least pretty good.  We'll see if the move to 24 teams waters it down.

England has a good group of young talent - but if Woy goes with the old guard, they will struggle.

I would not worry too much about Dier - some bad blood in the Chelsea game.  He is actually pretty calm under pressure.  He accumulated a lot of yellows, early in the season - picking up the automatic 1-game suspension on October 4th - but managed to avoid any further accumulation suspensions the rest of the season.

That's because we relate more to Europeans.

I put together a combined TV schedule on a calendar.  If anyone wants it, PM me your email address.

Some 5-game days in there.

Also, in case anyone was wondering, the Olympics don't start until August, so no conflicts there.

England's provisional squad - for friendlies:

Goalkeepers: Joe Hart, Fraser Forster, Tom Heaton.

Defenders: Nathaniel Clyne, Kyle Walker, Gary Cahill, Chris Smalling, John Stones, Ryan Bertrand, Danny Rose.

Midfielders: Dele Alli, Ross Barkley, Fabian Delph, Eric Dier, Danny Drinkwater, Jordan Henderson, Adam Lallana, James Milner, Raheem Sterling, Andros Townsend, Jack Wilshere.

Strikers: Harry Kane, Marcus Rashford, Wayne Rooney, Daniel Sturridge, Jamie Vardy.

Thanks Tick - PM sent. For anyone in the know, I am also interested in any subscription options to stream these games as I am planning to cut the cable now that the season's over.

We have tickets for Chicago, although our plans are still up in the air due to a juggling act my family has going on with jobs and other crap.  We've already planned to sell the first game - Jamaica-Venezuela - mostly just because there's no way I can go to 4 games and that one is the least interesting. Is it wrong that my son is more interested in seeing Argentina play Panama than USA v Costa Rica?  For me its a dead heat in terms of fan interest, hope to make both. Then there is the semi-final, which could be awesome.

I stopped going to the summer exhibition games long ago. For those who have only seen friendlies live at this level, this is really a treat. In truly competitive games like these, these guys are going twice as fast and hard than they do the summer exhibition tours.

The Copa is interesting to me because we almost never get to see non-CONCACAF teams play real games in our cities - really not since '94 as far as I can remember. I went to a game in Chicago that year, saw Klinsmann's Germany play Guardiola's Spain. The atmosphere and intensity was night/day different than a meaningless friendly like we normally have here.

I love the Euros too of course. In some ways it is superior to the World Cup. Its missing the great teams from south america and Africa, but the short form of the tournament is so intense right from day 1, with very few throw-away games.

It's funny the Copa sounded great to me, but then they announced the schedule and games etc. I have like zero interest in driving two hours to Orlando to watch Panama and Bolivia in the June heat at ~ 100 bucks a ticket.

Its generally agreed that Orlando got the worst of it from the schedule makers, especially with Brazil saving Neymar for Rio and then not selecting Kaka or Oscar.

Good news for the Azzurri as coach Antonio Conte and assistant Angelo Alessio were both cleared of match fixing charges earlier today. The bad news is that Veratti and Marchisio are both out, and this Italy team has to be one of the weakest at a major tournament any of us has ever seen.

France and Germany have to be considered co-favorites.  Belgium and Spain leading the group just below, although I like Spain a bit better.  Don't really see anyone outside of the four making too much noise.  Italy has surprised me before, but I don't see Graziano Pelle leading the line in a Euro title contender.  Star of the tournament to be either Griezmann or Paco.

Why not just join the Outlaws? For $25 you get a tshirt and the option to buy from the AO pool of tickets. The ones you're seeing on te message board are those purchased by AO members that for whatever reason they aren't now able to use. Those tickets posted MUST be sold for the same price paid. If AO finds anyone trying to resell for a profit they will rescind membership.  Last I checked there were still tickets available from the AO pool. When you join AO send you a code that you enter in Ticketmater that makes these available.

I am a paid AO member, it's the only way I can see the board  I'm talking about those guys that bought the 4 game package deal and our now reselling them way discounted compared to if I paid the single game price.

Can't wait to see the German, Italian and Spanish rosters. Surely Pelle isn't the best striker Italy can trot out there?

They don't really have many pure strikers.  Lots of winger types.  Maybe Belotti.  But Pelle appears to have started recently.  Cletius isn't kidding.  Italy will be strong at the back as always, but they're missing the best two CMs they have and they don't have goal scorers (unless we think Giovinco will make the team and play some way).

Super Mario is only 25. The last time we saw him play great inspired football was in the last Euro, but he's been dormant since.

OFFICIALLY getting tickets

Either the Uruguay v. Jamaica game or the Quarterfinal at Levis
A friend of mine bought the San Francisco package and is selling the Uruguay v Jamaica tix, pm if interested. Oddly, he has 3 tickets as he'll be out there with wife and son.

I'm adopting Wales this summer since the women in my house have France covered.  Our old local was a Welsh pub so I know how huge it would be to do well in the tournament, especially if it comes at the expense of their English overlords.

Wales open Group B action 11 Jun vs. Slovakia at Bordeaux, followed by England at Lens closing with Russia at Toulouse.

Former Fulham and Sociedad manager Chris Coleman has named a 29 man training squad.  He'll cut that down to 23 before the end of the month.

Goalkeepers: Wayne Hennessey, Danny Ward, Owain Fon Williams.

Defenders: Ashley Williams, James Chester, Ben Davies, James Collins, Chris Gunter, Adam Matthews, Neil Taylor, Adam Henley, Paul Dummett, Ashley Richards.

Midfielders: Joe Ledley, Joe Allen, David Vaughan, Emyr Huws, Jonathan Williams, David Edwards, George Williams, Aaron Ramsey, Andy King.

Attackers: David Cotterill, Hal Robson-Kanu, Tom Lawrence, Simon Church, Sam Vokes, Wes Burns, Tom Bradshaw.

Gareth Bale is conspicuously absent but he's critical to Wales prospects so we'll get to him later.  The rest of the team is all UK based with many names familiar to EPL fans along with some Championship, Wales and Scotland-based players.  The defense was solid in qualifiers, allowing only four goals in ten matches.  They twice shut out group winners Belgium and only surrendered more than one goal away to Bosnia-Herzegovina.  Coleman played a five-man back line in their tough group matches and played a counter attacking game.  They'll probably do the same in France.

The midfield used Crystal Palace's Joe Ledley in a holding role with Aaron Ramsey and Joe Allen as playmakers.  They play relatively direct with Bale and Reading's Hal Robson-Kanu up front.  Neither is a traditional number nine; both prefer to play as runners on the counter.  They averaged just over a goal per game in qualifiers with Bale contributing seven of the eleven scored.  They'll probably go as far as Bale carries them but Robson-Kanu is also an important part of Coleman's system.  Sam Vokes recovered from the knee injury that kept him out of most of Burnley's most recent EPL campaign and had a strong year in the Championship.  He offers a change of pace as a sub for Robson-Kanu but there's nobody who can replace Bale if he's injured or disappoints.

Advancing out of Group B would be a great result and it's certainly achievable.  The expansion to 24 teams and the possibility of advancing from third waters down the group phase.  The draw was relatively friendly and the sequence of matches is favorable.  The opener against Slovakia is probably the easiest matchup; a loss would be crushing for their chances but any points will position them well for the two remaining games.  England is the seeded team in the group but not one of the tournament favorites.  The finale vs Russia could be crucial but at least they'll know what they need to do going into the matchup and can change their setup accordingly.

Better article about Coleman's tactics http://thefalse9.com/2016/05/euro-2016-tactical-preview-wales.html

:hifive:

Just locked some down. Section 111 in Levis is pretty sweet. Might snag the QF ones too for that location
