KP's top 100 movies of the 00s -...and WE ARE DONE!!! (1 Viewer)

Footballguy
I did my top movies so far this decade HERE.  I wanted to continue on and do a list for my top movies from 2000-2009.  That was when I really started getting into movies a lot and got into more and more genres.  Love so many movies from this time.  Like I posted in the other thread, this was really damn hard.  I was pretty solid on my top 75 or so, but narrowing down the last 25 was near impossible.  If I did this a month from now I would probably shift stuff even more.  My initial list was hovering around 180 movies, so I started watching a bunch to try to narrow it down. There were several surprises of movies that both made and didn't make the list.

A few quick things before I start:

- I still didn't include documentaries.  I rate just about all I see quite high and this list would have been saturated with them.  I do plan on catching up on some and doing a list of just docs later.

- I didn't restrict myself other than that - sequels, remakes, foreign, whatever else made the list.  Actually probably about 15 foreign movies on the list.

- This list has a lot more variety than the last one - there are actually quite a few comedy and horror movies, and a handful of action.  The top part of the list might get snobbier though ;)

- I tried to treat this list list a desert island collection.  Which 100 movies from the decade would I take along.  I am not claiming anything here is "the best", just what I rated highly and enjoy.

- I still don't like Wes Anderson and Coen Brother comedies, so don't hold your breath for any of them.

- This will go a little slower than the last one.  I am still watching some in the top 1/2 as I go to make sure I have rankings right.

- Would love to see guesses as we go what the top 10 will be.

I will update this page every 20 movies or so for a quick reference of the countdown:

100. THE MACHINIST

Christian Bale is ####### nuts.  If I remember right, he just ingested an apple and a cup of coffee a day for months to get the weight down to play the title role.  He plays Trevor Reznik, a factory worker who has been deteriorating due to not being able to sleep for a year.  Don't want to say to much more about the movie.  It does get a little jumbled at the end, but it is well worth it just to witness Bale in this role. I still think it did a good job of keeping the tension and WTF is going on element going for duration. Honestly don't know how he does it (or why, frankly) but he was able to get up to Batman shape after this (though not all the way, hence a lot of wide far shots during the fighting and action) just to lose it again for Rescue Dawn.

I am going to post trailers for the movies, just in case people haven't heard of them or want to check them out in general.  I can't vouch for them, so I guess still steer clear of them just in case they give too much away. (I would guess movies like this have a higher risk of that too)

99. WEDDING CRASHERS

Trailer

I am sure there will be a bit of yapping about the comedy movies that do or don't make the list.  There are a couple big ones that I know would be on people's lists that didn't click with me as much.  I watched this one again last week, and while I do still think that it drags at the end, I still love the beginning enough to look past it.  For me good comedies have to have enough quality side characters to keep the interest up on rewatch, and this one has that.  I  Isla Fisher, and Rachel McAdams is damn near perfect in this movie.  Would be a lot higher if not for the subpar last 1/4 or so.

one more for the night:

98. SUNSHINE

Trailer

Keep in mind the that rankings are more by tiers, especially at the bottom.  Honestly didn't know what to do with this one.  IMO this is 3/4 of a fantastic sci-fi movie, and 1/4 bordering on trash.  Just watched it again the other day, and just like Wedding Crashers, I loved the beginning enough to overlook the rest.  Really liked the cast and how they worked together, and this is one of the few Boyle movies that I dig.  I guess his usual hyper-kinetic style isn't as featured here as with a lot of his other movies.  Score really kept up the tension throughout the movie.

97. CLOUDY WITH A CHANCE OF MEATBALLS

Trailer

Yep, there will be a handful of kids/family movies on here.  I love them and have watched them over and over.  There was a lot of debate in my director bracket about those Lord and Miller guys that beat out a top a director, but I really love their humor and all the movies they have put out.  This was their first movie.  It has all the odd comedy and side gags that their other movies do.  Hell, I watch this one without the kids around.   The father/son interaction always got me too.  The best animated movies have humor for everyone and heart, and I think this one has it.

96. [REC]

Trailer

Here we have "found footage" Spanish-style.  In this movie we follow a TV cameraman and reporter as they cover the night shift at a fire station.  They get a call at an apartment complex, and the fun begins.  This is one of the first I remember watching from the massive wave of these types of movies came out in the last decade or so (yes, I know there are a lot more years before).   I have worn out of them, but this one still creeps me out big time.  The best of these types of movies have a natural reason to have the cameras like that and go more in real time as the events happen.  As with just about every other type of horror genre, other countries seem to do it better.  Skip the American version, Quarantine, and watch this one instead.

really thought this was over-rated and not that funny, but I don't find much newer comedy all that funny.  looking forward to the rest of the list though

I get that.  Comedy is an odd thing to agree on.  I can think of at least 2 big popular comedies that aren't on the list that I either didn't like at all or didn't like as much on repeat viewings.

95. COLLATERAL

Trailer

Tom Cruise as a bad ###?  This one worked for me.  After watching it again recently it does feel like Michael Mann delivered the Drive vibe (not quite as good though) a decade before that movie.  Just love the look and style of this movie.  I think this is the last one on the list where I am not fully on board with a part of the movie - here it's the ending, but still love the rest enough that it makes the list.  I think this was the first time that Cruise got away from his clean, good guy roles.

94. THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO

Trailer

I thought the Fincher version was pretty good, but saw this one first and still think it's much better.  The main reason is I think Noomi Rapace was a lot better in the role.  Just nails the character.  The whole movie just feels darker and creepier to me.  There are some genuinely tense scenes in this movie.  Been a little bit since I have seen it, but remember being creeped out by some archival footage or pictures they were putting together?  I think each movie after got worse and worse, but thought this one was great.

93. BUBBA HO TEP

Trailer

So damn absurd and funny.  All you need to know is a mummy stalks the residents of a nursing home that just happens have Bruce Campbell as Elvis and Ossie Davis as JFK living there.  Any fan of Campbell and/or Army of Darkness type movies will have fun with this one.

Also, skip [Rec] 2, 3, and 4.

92.  HARRY POTTER AND THE PRISONER OF AZKABAN

Trailer

Here we have Alfonso Cuarón's take on the series.  I was a big fan of the books and most of the movies.  This was just a blast of greatness after the Chris Columbus movies that were before it.  It looked fantastic, but what really makes it stand out is the quiet moment that he seemed to be able to capture of the kids being kids.  Yes, this is the only one of the series on this list, but I am sure we will see this director again....

91. A BEAUTIFUL MIND

Trailer

One of the few movies of Ron Howard that I think is great.  Such an interesting person, and a great performance from Crowe.

No particular order - the departed, no country for old men, sideways, inglorious bastards, zodiac.....I will add that I probably have only seen 60-70% of the movies that will end up on your list.  Love these things, keep up the good work.

Are those yours, or your guesses for my top movies?

90. THE LOOKOUT

Trailer

Been a bit since I have watched this one, so I hope that it still holds up.  It was a movie that left an impression on me and couldn't seem to get bumped off the list by other movies.  Pretty sure this was my first intro to both Joseph Gordon Levitt (movie-wise), and has the lovely Isla Fisher again.  Good performances, and his character has a little Memento nod to it.  It was the directing debut for Scott Frank, who wrote movies I really liked: Dead Again, Minority Report, Out of Sight, and others.

89. GONE BABY GONE

Trailer

Darling of our director bracket Ben Affleck's debut behind the camera.  Might just be his best yet, just because he stayed behind the camera and relied on fantastic performances from this great cast.  Not fully on board with the ending, but the rest was great.  Based on a book by Dennis Lehane (another of his books just might show up later and I am pretty sure Shutter Island was on my last countdown), it is a damn good mystery and detective movie.

- Would love to see guesses as we go what the top 10 will be.
You and I had a fair amount of crossover in your previous list from this decade so here is a guess at your top 20, in no particular order:

The Lives of Others
Whale Rider
The Matador
High Fidelity
Donnie Darko
The Savages
Half Nelson
There Will Be Blood
No Country For Old Men
The Station Agent
Kung Fu Hustle
Shaun of the Dead
Lost In Translation
Sideways
Sexy Beast
28 Days Later
Let The Right One In
Y Tu Mama Tambien

This is a great list, and I think it goes to show how freakin' great this decade was.  At first glance, I think you might have 4 or 5 right.  There are a couple I haven't seen and added to my queue.

:biggestblackdot:

Thanks, KP.  Love your movie input and its always informative.  I don't have time now but want to remember this thread.

88. THE ROAD

Trailer

It goes without saying that it isn't as good as the book, but I still think it did a damn good job of capturing the bleakness that this father and son are walking through.  I hated the book the first time I tried it, but I am sure that it had more to do with the style than the substance.  Tried again several years ago after my son was born and loved it.  I read it around this time just about every year now.  I haven't seen it recently enough to make this list, but I remember really liking Hillcoat's other movie from this time - The Proposition too.

87. HOT FUZZ

Trailer

As we will see later, I have a soft spot for horror movies knocking on horror movies while being a good horror movie.    Well, here we have an action movie doing the same thing.  Pegg and Frost are so great together, and this one has a ton of funny side characters and lines to reward the repeat viewings.  All of the movies in their "trilogy" are gold.

86.  KICKING & SCREAMING

Trailer

Hey, I am treating this as a desert island list, and I don't think that my family has watched any other movie more over that time.  Here Will Ferrel does kids sports movie as he is coaching soccer with the reject team vs. his father's (Robert Duvall) elite team.  Throw in a little Ditka for good measure and my son and I laugh our asses off every time, and quote the movie a lot.

85.  THE SEA INSIDE

Trailer

Such a great performance.  This was my first intro to Javier Bardem.  He plays a Spanish man fighting for years to have the ability to end his own life.  It presents the debate in a fantastic way, but besides that, I think it is a genuinely romantic movie as we watch his relationship between 2 women in his life that fall in love with him.  Great acting and directing all around.

One of my all time favs. Edgar Wright does visual comedy perfectly as far as I'm concerned.

"Why don't you go to hell?  And while you're there grab me a juice box, Juice Box!"

Damn, it's been a busy weekend.  Let's do a few more of these while I am liquored up and on a GoT buzz.

84.  A HISTORY OF VIOLENCE

Trailer

Viggo plays a man who's past that he is trying to get away from catches up with him.  Really have enjoyed Cronenberg's output lately, and there seemed to be a change in his style starting with this one.  After rewatching it, there are elements here that I loved in Drive so much - the relationships, the slow burn, and when #### hits the fan, it really hits the fan.  Worth if just for Maria Bello as a cheerleader....

83.  Into the Wild

Trailer

Sean Penn goes behind the camera to take on one of my favorite books.  Just read it again and it always makes me cry.  Seems to be one of those feeler movies where you can get a sense of somebody's philosophy by how they react to this movie (book).  Was he somebody to be praised because he wanted to go it on his own and say "#### you" to the establishment, or was he a bratty, stupid rich kid too stubborn to let his family know what he was up to and basically just pissed his life away?  Honestly, I have read the book and seen the movie multiple times and still not 100% sure where I fall in this spectrum.  Would love it if my kid has 1/2 the passion that Chris seemed to have about life, but the lack of communication with his family is what always breaks me down.  Fantastic soundtrack by Mr. Vedder too.

82. DRAG ME TO HELL

Trailer

...and here we start in with the horror movies.  I had such a ####in' blast with this movie.  I would think most fans of Raimi and the Evil Dead movies would find some enjoyment in this.  It was about a decade removed from anything remotely thriiler-ish (The Gift), and almost 2 decades removed from Army of Darkness.  Here we have him diving back into the horror.  I thought it had it all - humor, cheesiness, jump scares.  I would be happy if he did more of this and less Spidey 3 and Oz the Great and Powerful.
