A bunch of weird stuff going on in Turkey being reported on Twitter.  Military closed the bridges over the Bosphorus.  Planes flying low in Ankara.  Looks like PM just confirmed it's a coup attempt.

BREAKING: PM Binali Yildirim live on NTV: This is a coup attempt. Those behind this will pay the heaviest price

Article

Erdogan isn't a Saddam or an al-Assad, but he is still way more of an authoritarian dicator-wanna be than ought to be in charge of a country that aspires to be more like a modern European nation than a Middle Eastern basket case.

I've always wanted to visit there.  They are like the intersection of the world.  Such a historic and different place.

holy ####.

scary stuff.. hoping everything rights itself quickly.

and somebody better tell chet not to go over there. but he can still go skiing in the swiss alps... let him know.

Fox is on the ground reporting live. CNN is standing around with their thumb up their butt looking for the next BLM interview.

from AP:

ANKARA, Turkey — Turkey's prime minister says a group within Turkey's military has engaged in what appeared to be an attempted coup.

Binali Yildirim told NTV television: "it is correct that there was an attempt."

Yildirim didn't provide details, but said Turkey would never allow any "initiative that would interrupt democracy."

Earlier, military jets were heard flying over the capital, Ankara.

Media reports said ambulances were seen in front of the Turkey's military headquarters.

I have to say, there is something inherently fascinating with coup attempts.
In some places it is practicially business as usual. And they aren't all third-world Hell holes. Though most of them have political systems that are dysfunctional and not very democratic.

do we know if the military is more radicalized than the more moderate majority over there?

Historically the military has been more secular and has taken over before when things became too radicalized.  Woukdnt be shocked if that is what happened here

Big concern for me right now is how the Turkish military interacts with Russia. Hopefully thing stay calm on that front.

who do we like in this one?
Probably the military.

This is from an article about the history of Turkish coups:  "Kenan Evren, the former Turkish president now facing charges in an Ankara court, is only the most recent in a long line of military officers to seize power in a coup. The military has long seen itself as the "guardian of Turkish democracy," which it defines as the staunchly secular state created by Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, the founder of the modern Turkish republic."

There has been a lot written in recent years of Erdogan wanting to roll back some of that secularism in favor of a more religious state.
