Windows 10 upgrades will cost $119 after July 29 (1 Viewer)

Any real benefits over windows 7?  I do use media center quite often, which I know isn't included with windows 10.

I moved to windows 10 a few months ago and have honestly been impressed. You can google the media center or any other questions you might have. Very stable and has worked on everything I have throw at it games wise and application wise. My brother in law had a problem with his and mcafee screwing up but other than him I have upgraded about 5 pcs and they have all gone good.

Funny, I had the opposite experience.  Laptop that was working great and fast on 7 is slow and super laggy after the 10 upgrade.  Probably gonna revert back.

So I'm the guy who never runs virus protection. I load my computer up with old games and watch boatloads of porn. Every 12-18 months I just save a few files and reinstall my entire OS rather then deal with the resource hogging protection programs.

Will I still be allowed to upgrade after my next porn season is over and it's time to reformat?

Seems so backwards to me.  No charge for an item when it comes out yet they start charging for the item one year after it has come out.

If you want everything to function more slowly than before, be sure to upgrade right away.

Interesting.  Which upgrade option did you use?  Complete install or upgrade and keep files?
I assume upgrade and keep files.  Aside from being lazy, one of the things I was afraid of doing with the complete install is not being able to find the product keys needed for some of the software on my computer.

I hate it. I have it on two new machines and about every four weeks the start button stops working on the desktop, which basically everything runs thru. So you have to go into safe mode and find a workaround. I am fine staying with 7

So far I have had 3 network cards quit functioning with windows 10. Rolled back both computers at work to fix them and on my home one, I went back to WIN 7. Basically, the network card has an IP address but won't bring up web pages. Icon on the tray has an exclamation point saying no internet access.

Upgrade/keep files this past weekend (from WIN 7). Took about 90 minutes and so far haven't noticed any problems. Performance is just fine. Easiest Microsoft upgrade by far.

Check with your manufacturer. A similar thing happened to me when I upgraded, but the start button and desktop icons never worked. Took me like 3 hours to figure out how to revert back.

I have a Lenovo Ideapad and it turns out there is some hardware in my model isn't compatible with 10 and can cause some problems. There seems to be some work arounds for the really tech savvy but I'll stick with 7 until I get something new in a few years.

So if I had a windows-less machine and wanted to put windows on it, should I rush this week to buy a copy of Win7 and take a free upgrade?  will that be significantly ($40) cheaper than new Win10 next week?

If you have a windows-less machine, what would you be upgrading? Think you are just looking at a new install.

I have 10 on 3 systems including my gaming PC. It's great. I suggest the free upgrade, because once SP1 comes out, and fixes most if not all of the issues, you're stuck paying for it.

Man, glad I saw this thread. Was about to hit the button, but this is my laptop also, though I have Win 8. I really have no need to upgrade. I'm just worried support for Win 8 will cease and I'll be boned later on.

Got the free upgrade and had to uninstall it. Could find my favorites which was supposed to be transferred over and kept requesting help from the icon which was repeatedly ignored.

I like 10, but network drivers, especially WiFi drivers, seem to be problematic after upgrade. Check your PC manufacturer's website for compatibility. I've upgraded numerous computers with no problems. I've also upgraded numerous ones that did have issues. You have 30 days to roll back, but I've seen previously working things, mostly the WiFi adapters, not work right after rollback. Windows 7 will still be getting security updates until 2020. Keep it if you like it.

How hard is the rollback process if it messes up a laptop? It doesn't end up making it unbootable does it?
I haven't seen a rollback render anything un-bootable. The only thing I've seen is what I mentioned about WiFi drivers, and that was on a couple of laptops. You just go to Start>Settings>Updates and Security>Recovery and roll it back within 30 days. The option disappears after the 30 days. I'd estimate I've rolled back around 20-25 PCs with no issues and 2 with some weird WiFi issues.

I don't recall the specifics because it was long ago. All I can say is, after I upgraded, my laptop never worked again. Couldn't even boot it any longer.

It's much worse than that.

They download the upgrade(which is big) and try to trick/confuse people into "upgrading" to the new OS by default. I think it's just one of Microsofts imaginary deadlines to get a few more people to upgrade after all this free advertising in tech news.

Of course my iFriends have had these upgrades shoved down their throats for awhile and nobody ever questions why the new/better iOS makes anything but the latest phone a miserable experience. Somehow having more devices running the new OS running on more devices is trotted out as a selling point even if the new OS makes old hardware less useful.

One of my employees did this upgrade and it killed the hard drive.  To be fair, it was likely on it's way to the it's death bed anyway.

If it ain't broke, don't fix it.  If it's broke, buy a Mac.

I have 8 with the 7 skin. Was unable to purchase 7 on my laptop when I bought it last year. Periodically I get this pop up screen telling me to update now with no option to click out of it, just the option of when. So I drag it to the bottom until I"m ready to shut down and it goes away for awhile before it comes back. I'm sticking to what I have.

Ok.  So I upgraded our family laptop back in May.  I never use it as I have a work laptop instead.  The kids just now got around to telling me that the WiFi no longer works on the family laptop.  I checked it out, and sure enough it won't connect to anything.  Any thoughts/ideas on how to fix this?  We're past the 30 day roll back window.  We had Win 8 and it was working fine.  The wife was just tired of getting the "upgrade" pop-up message so I installed it to make her happy.

There are a lot of 'fixes' out there that may, or as is usually my experience, may not.  Do you have a brand name laptop?  If so, I would start at the manufacturer's website, find support for your particular model, and see whether they say Windows 10 works on it/if there are Windows 10 drivers available.  Maybe google your laptop model name + wifi not working after Windows 10, and see if you find some answers that way.  If it came with installation discs, I would probably just back up files, any software documentation you need, etc. to an external hard drive and reinstall Windows 8 from scratch.  There may also be a recovery partition on the laptop where you could restore to factory defaults, but the Windows 10 upgrade may have affected whether that will work or not.

How to get it working again is really dependent on your particular laptop.  I'm just guessing, but I have found that trying to fix the WiFi issues after upgrade was not worth the time I spent, when I could have just reinstalled the prior version of Windows quicker.  If you do need to reinstall, and you're not comfortable with obtaining and installing hardware drivers you might need from the manufacturer's website, get someone who is to help or do it for you.  You probably will need to install at least a couple, and probably the network drivers would be the most likely ones right off the bat.  One other thing you could try is to see whether a USB WiFi adapter works (one that is Windows 10 compatible, if you or a friend just happen to have one laying around).

This is a bit of a generic reply.  If you need help, and tell me the model, I could probably point you in the right direction a little better.

i had that problem and went to the W10 upgrade site to download directly. Smooth and easy after that.
Tried this. Got the following message:

The CPU isnt supported (LAHF/SAHF)

googled the message and found a message board said that I had to disable the NX in the Bios before installing. Googled how to do that. Disabled the NX. Went back to upgrade and got the following message:

The CPU isnt supported (NX)

:wall:

Based on everything here, I'm sticking with Win 8. I just can't afford the risk of wifi issues since I use it to VPN and work from home a few days a week.

This is a good safe call.  I wish I could go back and not upgrade.   My computer is just a lot slower than it was before.

Some unsolicited last minute tips.

I'm not sure if anybody is really sure what will happen when the upgrade clock strikes midnight. If you want to be safe, go to Control Panel>Programs and Features>View Installed Updates> Search for KB3035583 and uninstall it. Reboot. Check for Windows Updates again>View available updates, right click on, and hide KB3035583, View optional Updates and hide Upgrade for Windows 10 if it's there.

If you still haven't upgraded, another annoying thing is the size of files that are probably auto downloaded to your PC. If it's an issue, go to Disk Cleanup. Let it scan your C:\ drive (assuming Windows is installed on C:\) and let it do it's calculating. When it's done, click on the 'Clean Up System Files' button and let it scan again. When done, allow it to clean up Temporary Installation Files. This will get rid of the Windows 10 install files. It's usually somewhere near 5 GB.  Annoying if you have a a tablet with a smaller hard drive.

There's a similar process if you already have the Windows 10 upgrade, have not passed the 30 day thing, and are going to stick with it. There's a Windows.old folder that is supposed to be automatically cleaned up after that 30 day window, but it can sit on your hard drive taking up a ton of hard drive space until that happens. The process is almost the same except you choose 'Previous Windows Installations' from Disk Cleanup. Do not do this if you may want to roll back!

doing it now on my old laptop - largely bc something in the windows 10 push was causing me to not be able to get my windows 7 updates anymore (annoying as hell)

I made a rescue disk and backed up my whole computer on a couple different external drives just to be on the safe side.
