Treadmill Question (1 Viewer)

So my wife and I have a 10-15 year old treadmill. My MIL gave it to us about 5 years ago after she hurt her knee and had to give up running. I use it 5 times a week and think it works fine. My wife has been complaining for a few months that it's not smooth and that their is a hitch or a skip. I kind of notice it, but it doesn't impact my running. She says she won't use it anymore because of the issue. She wants a new treadmill. I am thinking maybe we can get this one repaired. It might just need lubrication or an adjustment of some sort. Anyone have experience with this? Where does one even go to get a treadmill repairmen? Is it just not worth it and I need to bite the bullet on a new one? TIA

I am hoping someone can come and fix it because it might kill me to have carry this thing out of the basement and carry a new one down.

You may be the only person who's ever purchased/been given a treadmill that actually uses it.

(and tell your wife she's just being lazy)

Considering I am a teacher and haven't worked in 3 weeks while she has been working OT all summer, I think she would murder me in my sleep if I called her lazy.

Maybe try American Home Fitness or a similar retail place and see if they have a repair guy

I strained cartilage in my right foot from using the treadmill too much, felt like a hot poker went through my foot for 2-3 weeks then subsided, but darn near thought I had a stress fracture. Went to a foot specialist who confirmed no damage via x-ray and MRI, but said to run outside on clay if available or the street vs the treadmill due to the repeated hard impact on your feet from a treadmill. Said he tells all patients to stay as far away as possible from treadmills, no matter what the conditions outside. I went back to using the rowing machine at my gym, no impact on my feet. Bike works too, but the bike bores me.

I got a NordicTrack through some sales promotion at work YEARS ago that came with some insane warranty. After several years, the belt started slipping to the side and would eventually jam up. Since it was under warranty, we had them come out to fix it, but it was never the same. They would have to come out and replace the belt like every 6 months. I guess my advise is dont bother if you're going to have to pay for it.

Thanks, but she likes the treadmill and so do I. In Michigan, there are several months with too much snow and ice to reliably run. Also we have been blessed with a summer where it's a real feel of like 100 all day long every day so it's not the best conditions for running.

You should clean and lube your deck annually or more frequently depending upon use.  You basically just loosen the belt (youtube it for your treadmill), wipe the deck down, tighten it up and apply the lube (Amazon sells it).  Takes about 15 minutes tops and may fix the hiccup.

I'm not sure what brand of treadmill you're using but mine has waaaay more give than pavement.  I cannot imagine a doctor advising otherwise.

Thanks, I am less than handy, but it might be worth a shot.

You should just save that money and put it towards an above ground pool, much healthier on the knees.

On my old treadmill the belt (the track you run on) was loose, same skipping sensation, and all it was were a couple of screws to turn. They were on each side on the back of the thing.

Look on Craig's list.  People sell these things all the time for a 4th of what they bought them for; most less than a year old.

Honestly though, I'd probably go with a newer model that is likely smaller/more compact (ETA: and not likely to break again).   If you do run a lot on a treadmill, I would look into getting an elliptical, gotta save those knees.

Considering that. Moving it is going to be the real PITA here. Maybe newer treadmills are lighter, but the dude I got in the basement is a tank man. Had to get that ##### from my MIL's 2nd floor to a truck and to my basement. It was serious ####.

What about a free runner? Saw these at the fair today and thought they looked neato. Might want to look into that.

CList also good for getting rid of old, worthless, heavy ones you don't want to move yourself. Just offer it for free and it be gone quick.

That's the advice I need.
Make it clear in the ad they have to do it themselves. Then when they come to get it if you think you'll feel like a ##### for not helping just hide out in the bedroom and let your wife deal with them. But of course pack heat in case they're bad guys and you have to bust in and kill them to save her.

Why wouldn't you lube the surface under the belt before you tighten it back down?

You could.  The belt doesn't get tight as much as it gets snug.  There's room to get your hand and a tube of lube in there even when tightened down.  You squirt the lube in there after the decks clean while it's running so the lube gets all over the deck and belt.

Shame that treadmill doesn't come with a manual. Probably would have covered all that. (Hint: You can likely find a PDF version online somewhere).
