movies you can't get yourself to watch just because... (1 Viewer)

I like movies and I generally push myself to be open about most subject matters in the film library.  There are some movies, however, that I just can't make myself watch no matter how lauded or recommended they are.  Sometimes it's subject matter such as Vietnam era war movies.  Sometimes it's what is shown on screen such as movies like Hostel and Cannibal Holocaust.  Sometimes it's because I don't know that I want to find out about what the movie is presenting such as City of God and the rise of street gangs in Brazil; seems like it would stick with me in a depressing way.

I've already mentioned some of my fearful movies but others in my list include- Old Boy, Green Inferno, Platoon, Sophie's Choice, Requiem for a Dream

Some that I've seen and appreciate- Apocalypse Now, M, Boys from Company C, The Year of Living Dangerously, Saw(I and II), the new Halloween, The Orphanage

What movies are you trepidatious to watch and which movies would you suggest I watch despite my concerns?

Watch Old Boy (original) and City of God.

No reason not to watch Old Boy and CoG is not as depressing as it sounds.

I might be thinking of the wrong movie.  I still haven't seen Old Boy but after looking around a bit it's Audition that I have some problems with.

I can very much understand not wanting to see Sophie's Choice, but you won't be able to say you've seen the greatest acting performance in the history of movies until you do. Maybe read the book first.

That's what makes watching the movie a sophie's choice for me.  I know Kline and Streep are phenomenal but the weight of the choice may hurt my soul.  Sometimes great art demands that sacrifice, not sure I'm up to it.

All gross horror movies.
yeah, I was/am the same way but finally relented and watched the first two saws.  Was glad I watched the first and while I squirmed a bit they both were okay as far as story and such.  Same with Rob ZOmbie's take on Halloween which I thought hit it out of the park.  That movie scared me hard in a good way.

No desire to watch hacker movies like Saw. I don't need to see sick twisted violence that is just there for the sake of violence. If it's part of an actual plot that may be different.

It's gotten so I won't watch big action pictures til someone i respect tells me to because they don't even try to connect to any logic scheme anymore.

Pretty much my aversion too.  I was convinced to watch the Saw movies and gotta say the first one especially was more than I thought it was going in.  Saw parts of Night of 1000 Corpses and was disturbed so never saw the whole thing and likely won't.

Love that movie too, but if you don't want to see torture then avoid.

Something I should push myself to watch?

Any movies you have a difficult time pulling the trigger on?
Very good movie, I would not push yourself to watch it.

You mentioned the Hannibal Lecter movies. I love Silence of the Lambs but I don't think I can ever bring myself to watch the sequels like Red Dragon or Hannibal.

This I get.  I'm about burned out on superhero movies in much the same way I burned out of Arnold and Sly after I,II, and III back in the day.

I have yet to watch Schindler's List. Haven't gotten around to it.

Leaving Las Vegas is a movie I am glad I saw (Fantastic movie, great acting), but it is so depressing I would never watch again

Reversi:

Yep, Leaving Las Vegas is another on my list of not seen yets as well.  Many times at the video store I stood and looked at it but could never pick it up precisely because of it's content.

Schindler's List is all it's cracked up to be.  A tough watch but very worth the while.

The new generation of Star Trek.

Any movie that has teenage wolves or vampires in it better star Michael J Fox.

I wil push the envelope quite a bit with movies, so my list would be short.  The only movie I can think of that I won't watch again is the doc Dear Zachary.  Never cried so hard watching something.  The only movie I know of that I won't try, Criterion or not, is Salo.

Try Zachariah instead. It's a bit lighter.

Just wiki'ed this and it fits my Do Not Watch criteria.  Probably won't watch Dear Zachary either.  I have a difficult time steeling myself for movies like tihs.

Correct me if I'm wrong but aren't you the one who defends against the term torture porn?  If so, and I'm not picking a fight, but I have to ask why on Salo??

I've only watched the original Star Wars even though I have the first three on DVD.   I'll get around to watching them some day I suppose but not really excited about it.

I'm okay with horror films that have a little gore but nothing over the top.  As already mentioned I am not big on the super hero movies either.

I'd echo most of the action movies that permeate the movie scene these days - the Batmans, Spider-Mans Iron Mans, etc., and even non Marvel stuff.

I get they're entertaining and all, but not worth the coin to see the same rehash. Even when released on DVD, I have little interest.
