Andy D's 2017 Mock Draft Thread - 4/17 One last "Oh, okay. What the heck..." mock (1 Viewer)

Andy Dufresne

Footballguy
Let's remember what mock draft discussion is for - to discuss incoming talent, scheme fits, front office genius/ineptitude.

It's not for "accuracy". Maybe you're interested in how much more of an insider Jay Glazer is than Jason La Canfora but I'm not. All I am is a guy with an internet connection trying to read tea leaves in multiple articles.

So, let's have fun...

1/19 Mock

I have to transcribe this from my work computer because "The Bank" doesn't like emailing to external sources. So it'll take a bit.

1. Cleveland - Myles Garrett DE Texas A&M

This is really the only answer (other than a trade - in which case Garrett still goes #1)

2. San Francisco/Washington - Reuben Foster LB Alabama

Whichever team picks here, Foster would be a building block for a decade for their defense. Shades of Patrick Willis/Redskins need help up the middle.

3. Chicago - Jonathan Allen DL Alabama

Their defense should have been better this past year. Allen would assure it for next.

4. Jacksonville - Jamal Adams S LSU

Jags are on the verge of having a great defense. Teamed with Ramsey, this would be lethal.

5. Tennessee (fom LAR) - Mike Williams WR Clemson

It's no secret the Titans need better targets for Mariota.

6. NY Jets - Leonard Fournette RB LSU

After seeing what Elliott did for Dallas, this would be awfully tempting for the Jets.

7. LA Chargers - Malik Hooker S Ohio State

They look kind of smart for letting Weddle go (his talent has slipped) but they DO need to replace what he was.

8. Carolina - Solomon Thomas DE Stanford

Thomas is this year's fast riser winner. Panthers always seem to churn through good DE's.

9. Cincinnati - Derek Barnett DE Tennessee

Helping their surprisingly wobbly defense would do wonders to make this a more balanced team.

10. Buffalo - Tim Williams DE Alabama

Off field questions be darned (they were dismissed anyway), this would be an aggressive player for McDermott's scheme.

11. New Orleans - Takkarist McKinley DE UCLA

12. Cleveland/New England - Marshon Lattimore CB Ohio St

13. Arizona - Quincy Wilson CB Florida

14. Indianapolis - Jabrill Peppers

15. Philadelphia (from MIN) - Corey Davis WR Western Michigan

16. Baltimore - Taco Charlton DE Michigan

17. Washington - Malik McDowell DL Michigan St

18. Tennessee - Sidney Jones CB Washington

19. Tampa Bay - John Ross WR Washington

20. Denver - Cam Robinson T Alabama

21. Detroit - Carl Lawson DE Auburn

22. Miami - Zach Cunningham LB Vanderbilt

23. NY Giants - OJ Howard TE Alabama

24. Oakland - Jarrad Davis LB Florida

25. Houston - David Njoku TE Miami

26. Seattle - Gareon Conley CB Ohio St

27. Kansas City - TJ Watt DE/OLB Wisconsin

28. Dallas - Budda Baker S Washington

29. Green Bay - Dalvin Cook RB FSU

30. Pittsburgh - Gerald Everett TE South Alabama

31. Atlanta - Adoree' Jackson CB USC

32. New England - Teez Tabor CB Florida

Round 2 - Assuming that Kizer and Trubisky went SOMEWHERE in the 1st, they're off the board here. Let's cheat some more and assume that teams DIDN'T get their QB guy in FA/Trade...what then?

33. Cle - Patrick Mahomes QB Texas Tech

34. SF - Deshaun Watson QB Clemson

35. Jax - Garett Bolles T Utah

36. Chi - Davis Webb QB Cal

37. LAR - Tre'Davious White CB LSU

38. LAC - Ryan Ramczyk T Wisconsin

39. NYJ - Desmond King CB Iowa

40. Car - Christian McCaffrey RB Stanford

41. Cin - Raekwon McMillan LB Ohio St

42. NO - Justin Evans S Texas A&M

43. Phi - Jourdan Lewis CB Michigan

4/17

Round 1

1. Cleveland Browns - Myles Garrett
Still the only selection they can make.

2. San Francisco 49ers - Solomon Thomas
They want to move out, but it's too expensive to move to the #2 spot, and besides...the 49ers need some players for the 4-3.

3. Cleveland from Chicago Bears - Mitchell Trubisky
1.3 = 2200
1.12 = 1200, 2.33 = 580, 2.52 = 380 == 2160
Last year, the Eagles gave the Browns their No. 8 pick, a 2017 first-rounder and a 2018 second-rounder to move up to #2.

4. Jacksonville Jaguars - O.J. Howard
Really tough choice here between Howard/Fournette/Allen but the good news is they can't be faulted for taking any of the three. Signing Church really took Adams out of consideration.

5. Buffalo Bills (from Tennessee Titans (from Los Angeles Rams)) - Deshaun Watson
1.5 & 4th = 1.10 & 2.39
Taylor's restructured contract is pretty team-friendly, they really seem to want to add a QB, and this sticks it to the Jets.

6. New York Jets - Jamal Adams
Calvin Pryor is a bust and even though Lattimore is tempting, there are several good CBs that can be had later. Not that it matters without a QB.

7. Los Angeles Chargers - Corey Davis
Safety is the common pick but there are guys to be had later. Davis would be "the man" if Allen continues to be injured but would make an even better 1/2 punch if he doesn't. And Benjamin would make for mismatches as the #3.

8. Carolina Panthers - Derek Barnett
Is Fournette a sexy pick here? Sure. But Stewart still isn't awful and if they're bringing back Peppers, the DE situation is dire. Easier finding runners than rushers.

9. Cincinnati Bengals - Leonard Fournette
Here, the opposite is true from Carolina. Sure they need pass rushers, but Bernard is a complimentary back, Hill is just average. And most importantly Andy Dalton is not Cam Newton.

10. Tennesse Titans from Buffalo Bills - Marshon Lattimore
They trade back and still get the guy they would have taken at #5. The Titans sure know what they're doing, I tell you!

11. Arizona Cardinals (from New Orleans Saints for a 1st and a 4th-ish) - Patrick Mahomes
Fearing that the Bears will snipe Mahomes, the Cardinals give up very little to leapfrog. Mahomes completes his "This year's Carson Wentz" story.

12. Chicago Bears (from Cleveland Browns (from Philadelphia Eagles)) - Gareon Conley
And the Bears are left to wonder "what the heck just happened?" They added Marcus Cooper - which is no addition at all. And what in the world happened to Kyle Fuller?

13. New Orleans (from Arizona Cardinals) - Taco Charlton
Edge rusher or corner? Charlton is a bigger end and brings more to the table than someone like Takkarist McKinley who is also a consideration here.

14. Philadelphia Eagles (from Minnesota Vikings) - Christian McCaffery
Fantasy footballers get their wish and Eagles fans fondly remember Brian Westbrook.

15. Indianapolis Colts - Rueben Foster
Like Paul Simon sang "Why am I so soft in the middle when the rest of my life is so hard?" Well, the Colts luck out here and six-pack the middle of their defense more than a little.

16. Detroit Lions (from Baltimore Ravens for a 1st and a 3rd-ish) - Haason Reddick
Lions want to get faster on defense and, whoa daddy is this it. They need to jump ahead of the Redskins to make this happen.

17. Washington Redskins - Jonathan Allen
Did they just get lucky or did they draft a guy with bad shoulders. Don't underestimate how skittish front offices get when injuries are involved.

18. Tennessee Titans - Mike Williams
The nice double-shot predicted by pundits comes true. He's not an elite athlete but he'll be the bully this offense needs.

19. Tampa Bay Buccaneers - Dalvin Cook
Where there's smoke, there's fire. And this scuttlebut is roasting. Doug Martin? More like DONE Martin, amirite!?

20. Atlanta (From Denver Broncos) - Malik Hooker
2017 1st, 2018 2nd
Falcons are looking for a 1/2 punch to team up with Keanu Neal and they really find it here. Again, injuries make for a mini-fall but Atlanta's defense would be really bolstered by this move.

21. Baltimore Ravens - Cam Robinson
Ozzie loves his 'Bama connection and losing Rick Wagner stings.

22. Miami Dolphins - Forrest Lamp
Plug and play is the word here. They've made enough moves on defense this offseason to look at the offensive side of the ball. Tight end would be in play too.

23. New York Giants - Zach Cunningham
Their linebackers are not...wait...do they even employ any NFL linebackers. Cunningham's star has faded a bit in the process but he's a rock solid player that could really help.

24. Oakland Raiders - Jarrad Davis
Same song, different verse in terms of team need but unlike Cunningham, Davis has regained a lot of his mojo and teams like the Raiders have to be ready to pounce. In fact, I might have these players backwards in terms of which team they go to.

25. Houston Texans - Davis Webb
The battle cry in Houston must be "What the hell are we supposed to do, you moron?" They're too far away for the draft's QBs at this point - and their starter is currently Tom Savage. He has a lot of warts but at least he has NFL level talent...well some anyway.

26. Seattle Seahawks - Chidobe Awuzie
Take your pick of the CBs you like best. The problem for these guys is that because there are so many good DBs this year, lots of teams are going to think they can wait. The upside is you get to go to a good team.

27. Kansas City Chiefs - John Ross
This offense goes "Zzzzzooooooooommmmmm!!!!!"

28. Dallas Cowboys - Takkarist McKinley
I don't know what qualifies as "war daddy" but this kid is a pass rusher. They lost a lot on defense this offseason and need to get after the QB to mask some of their losses in the backfield.

29. Green Bay Packers - Marlon Humphrey
They could take corners in the first three rounds and it would actually make sense.

30. Pittsburgh Steelers - Jabrill Peppers
Sorry Steelers fans. If he's here, it's going to happen. And I don't see why not. I think teams love a guy that can do many things across roster spots and I expect him to be gone much before this.

31. Denver Broncos (from Atlanta Falcons) - Ryan Ramczyk
They gamble on the trade back and win. Their offensive line really needs something like this.

32. New Orleans Saints (from Patriots) - Kevin King
A Charlton/King combo would go a long way to easing their defensive woes, I believe

1. Cleveland - Myles Garrett, DE Texas A&M

One thing I'm sure of is that Cleveland will out think themselves again with this pick. They'll probably trade out. If they don't, they'll think they've got their guy in Kessler and bypass the QB.

Having said all that....if they take Garrett they arguably get the draft's best player.

Right now, Garrett looks like BPA and it 'appears' that many people are coming around to that but it is still early in the QB evaluation process.  I think many fans are leaning to Garrett after passing on Bosa and Kahlil Mack and the fact the Browns are desperate for edge pass rushers.

A QB 'might' fall to wherever their second-1st round pick from Philly falls but I have seen someone speculate the team 'might' take Garrett with the top pick.  The speculation is the team would then move-up to get a QB.  The problem with that strategy is that every single analytic study I've seen discounts giving up draft picks to move up in the draft, especially for a QB.  Still early but right now I like Garrett with the top pick and I think most people looking at the draft like Garrett.

2. San Francisco - Mitch Trubisky, QB North Carolina

The 49ers are faced with a Kaepernick Conundrum. He has unfortunately started to play pretty well. But he's still a thorn in the PR side and 2017 is a player option (I think) decision.

Let's just say they part ways.

Then the question is which QB makes the most sense. I doubt Romo ends up here (or ANY NFC team for that matter).

Trubisky/Kizer/Watson will be an interesting debate...or not if the first two stay in school.

:blackdot:

Finally a mock draft at a time that makes sense. Last year it was insufferable dealing with them since week 1 it seemed.

I think Cleveland trades out as well, especially if there is a QB worth jumping ahead of SF for (Houston, Chicago and NYJ come to mind as trade partners- most likely NYJ IMO due to Houston having to pay too much and Chicago has so many needs I'm not sure they sell the farm for a QB and risk another decade of ineptitude).

Kaep has started playing well.  Last year he was injured and got a second opinion and had multiple surgeries and looks to finally be healthy.  He is posting solid numbers without any receiving threats.  IF Chip is back, he fits his system to a-T.

Neither Trubisky or Kizer has declared, YET!

Kizer was considered the top candidate a few months ago but has really fallen off and isn't currently viewed as a 1st round pick by McShay or Mel Kiper.  He 'probably' should stay in school but recently that hasn't worked out too well for returning QBs.

http://www.espn.com/blog/cleveland-browns/post/_/id/20904/way-too-early-look-at-2017-draft-qb-decisions-loom-for-mitch-trubisky-deshone-kizer

Decisions from two quarterbacks in the next month will have a major effect on the 2017 draft.

Notre Dame's DeShone Kizer and North Carolina's Mitch Trubisky both must decide whether it's better to return to school or declare for the draft.

ESPN's Todd McShay believes that both might be better off returning to school. The recent history of quarterbacks who return, however, isn't great. Players such as Ohio State's Cardale Jones and USC's Matt Barkley hurt their draft status by returning.

Kizer had impressive numbers in a disappointing year for the Irish: 2,926 yards, 26 touchdowns and nine interceptions. He had 23 starts at Notre Dame, winning 12. At 6-foot-4 and 230 pounds, Kizer has ideal quarterback size. The question is how soon he'll develop.

Kizer is not ranked among the top 32 by McShay, Mel Kiper or Scouts Inc. He has submitted his name to the NFL Draft Advisory Board to assess his chances, but if he's not forecast as a first-round pick, he might be better suited for a return to school.

McShay has Trubisky in his Top 32. Draft expert Dane Brugler of NFLDraftScout.com said Trubisky would be a top-10 pick if he declares and has him going third overall in his mock draft to Chicago. (He has the Browns taking Texas A&M DE Myles Garrett.) Brugler has Trubisky ranked fourth overallamong draft-eligible players.

If Trubisky truly is a top-10 pick, he'd be wise to declare.

He started just one season at North Carolina, but completed 68.9 percent of his passes and shot to the top of most every quarterback rating. He's big, can stand in the pocket and is mobile. He has the attributes of an NFL quarterback, but he lacks experience.

If he declares then I think Kizer will fall out of the first round and that Trubisky will get taken go in the top-three but not sure SF takes him with Kaep playing soo good.

Chicken/egg question...

Has Kizer fallen off as ND's season hit the skids or is it vice versa?

3. Chicago Bears -  Deshone Kizer, QB Notre Dame

You know how teams want to take a QB and sit him for a year but it never works out that way because their starter just sucks too darn bad?

Well this might be a situation where it could work. Sure Cutler sucks, but at least he's affordable now. And Kizer has skills that might be to hard to pass up. Best case they end up like Philadelphia and Kizer shows ready allowing them to get something in exchange for Cutler.

Chicken/egg question...

Has Kizer fallen off as ND's season hit the skids or is it nice versa?

Top QB prospects fall out every year.  Kizer was rated the top guy primarily due to prototypical size but the scouting reports all said he need a lot of work.  I started watching him and wanted to see a top prospect.  He makes some NFL throws, he has the size, but...  From what I saw, he looked to be late with his throws.  He reminded me of EJ Manuel.  I did more research.

He has mechanical issues with his throwing motion, his back leg flares out as his back hip opens up turning quicker than his shoulders so the ball dips at the end of the throw which indicates velocity 'issues'.  A compacted throwing motion with a stable lower body provides an anchor.  The hip turn creates torch but his throws are not consistently anchored which saps natural momentum.  Mechanics provide proper throwing motion or you end up making arm throws and that happens a lot with Kizer's velocity.  He is inconsistent, his throwing mechanics are out of synch.

Some NFL QB coaches probably think they can fix it.  The coaches at ND have no incentive to change his mechanics and risk short term loss for long term gain that they won't see but NFL teams thought they could fix Tebow and other college QB prospects.

I'm not sure Kizer fell.  At the start of the season, the guys who were seen as the top QBs were Watson and Kizer and Kizer had him beat on size and system and NFL coaching.

FWIW, Rob Rang just put out his mock yesterday and he doesn't have Kizer going in the first round either.

http://www.cbssports.com/nfl/draft/news/nfl-mock-draft-browns-take-mitch-trubisky-at-no-1-titans-bolts-go-wr/

There's too many supply/demand issues at the QB spot for Kizer to fall out of the first, I think.

WHERE in the first is huge question though.

If there's a QB worth it at #2, why would the Browns not take him at #1?
They seem to like what they've seen in Kessler. They have a lot of needs, why not try to get a QB later in the draft rather than blow (another) first round draft pick on a potential QB bust? I never like taking a QB #1, #1 because the impact of a bust on that pick is so big. You could make the case for anyone taken that high but QB is the most important position on the field, so if that fails at #1, #1 that is huge.

At the end of the day, I think if the Browns stay 1 they will take a QB (based off of what you said), but I anticipate them trading down.

4. Jacksonville - Jonathan Allen, DE Alabama

They have talent on this team. Coaching HAS to be the issue.

An Allen/Jackson tandem would be

Agreed.  Browns need to do everything they can, including trading down and acquiring more picks, to improve the o line.  Kessler + a decent line >>>> same line with a new qb.

While they might not do it, Watson to the jets makes too much sense imo. (I like Watson)
You called it...

5. NY Jets - Deshaun Watson,  QB Clemson

The Jets would be my bet for a Romo landing spot. Otherwise, time to rebuild again... Again.

Kessler isn't the reason you pass on a QB, the way Zach Mettenberger wasn't.

If I was a Browns fan, I would be dreaming about taking Garrett at #1, and a QB at 11-13.

Rooting for you, Browns fans.

Let me add, when you have absolutely nothing at QB, you must draft QB, until it works. Drafting others just wastes everyone's time especially the guy you drafted.....Joe Thomas. You build around a QB, no one else.

One thing about draft statements in December, they always come true.
Trubisky could stay, I suppose but regardless, he's going to a really bad team unless the bad team does the same stupid move the Browns did last year. Then a better team gets him.

6. Cincinnati - Jabrill Peppers, SAK Michigan

SAK = Swiss Army Knife

If Peppers was a robot (and he just might be) he'd look like this.

The Bengals need help throughout the back seven of their defense.

Think Deone Bucannon.

I agree. I'm not sure the Browns do.

There's no Jameis Winston in this draft, though.

Andy, is this a "I think they WILL do this" mock or a "I think they SHOULD do this" mock?
It's a "these players should go about 'here' because of their skill level compared to their peers and a they fill a team need" mock draft.

You know. Pretty standard. ;)

Sure, but the browns could have Winston/Mariota/luck and they'd just turn him into David Carr unless they fix that line.  Only the 2014 jaguars had worse protection over the last decade.

I agree.

Look no further than Cousins. I'm not sure he is as an effective of a starter on Cleveland, Chicago, SF, NYJ. The guy has a great offensive line and his talents are allowed to shine.

Brock Osweiler... guy looks pretty darn promising in Denver, goes to Houston and is a disaster. Who's wasting who's time down in Houston

The problem is they thought that was a good idea once before, drafted Thomas and wasted his whole career because they never found a QB. If the QB is mentally strong, a bad OL will not do what it did to Carr.

Carr sucked out of the gate because he was just awful. Fortunately for the Texans, the OL sped up the process. He didn't know the basics of QBing coming out of college and going into year 5 in the NFL he still hadn't grasped it....said Kubiak when he arrived there. I mean the guy ran out of bounds for a loss when the rule even then was that you can throw it 50 rows into the stands and not get intentional grounding. It's now called the David Carr special and Joe Flacco ran it to perfection last week. Tucker's FG went from a 50 yarder to a 57 yarder. Yeah, Flacco is dumb.

Honest question (as in I don't know the answer so it's not asked just to make a point); how many QBs succeed with a horrible o line?  Average ol, sure.  But they have a lot of work to do before they're average.

Fwiw I actually like Kessler as a game manager, and their coach likes him.  I'm not against them taking a qb at #1, but their top priority has to be the line.

Nice work AD. It's funny right around the time you wrote this, I had a random thought pop into my ahead to look at a 2017 mock draft earlier without ever knowing you started your new thread. Weird.

Well? Who's going to Carolina?

Crap, I'm early, right? Not looking at standings, but we beat the Rams and I think they are 4-7 too.

I think this is true. They don't want to trade Joe Thomas, even though he would probably get them a pretty decent amount back considering how reliable he can be. They value their OL as well

Despite Houston missing two key starters off their O'line, they actually are ranked fairly decently  so far this year at 16 by PFF. Denver is actually ranked way worse at 25.

Osweiler just plain sucks.

I actually thought SF would be the perfect landing spot for Romo, I just don't think he'll want to steward a rebuild, especially not after watching the playoffs from the sidelines this year.

nice start at a mock - entertaining read, thanks @Andy Durfesne

Looking forward to seeing what you do with Carolina.  Corner, o line or fournette? Would like to see fournette but I don't know if that's a good pick (I doubted Zeke at 4 too)

Where does Peppers play?  I just don't know how and where his game translates to the NFL.
Strong safety, Outside LB, dime LB, slot WR, 3rd down RB, punt eturner, kick returner.

If a team has playmakers at all those spots, they don't need this bum.

The deone Buccanan comp is fair but I prefer looking back 19 years.  Not quite as good a corner but better against the run.  Versatile as anyone, he'll quickly become a fan favorite no matter where he lands.

7. Tennessee - Jamal Adams,  Safety LSU

I get the feeling that this team might actually be turning the corner. Their defense is good but could improve against the pass. Adams has drawn Polamalu comparisons.
