Anyone been to Cabo?

Wondering about a private shuttle service from the airport to the hotel.  Any tips on that will be appreciated.  Or other general tips on a visit to Cabo.

Note:  the search function sucks and I couldn't find another thread if there is one.

I just got Orbitz to add in a shuttle service when I went.  Cheap and they always stop of beer along the way.

Other tips depend on where you are staying, hopefully near downtown.  I can look up the best restaurants we went out of the way to get to if you want.

Where is your hotel? Are you pretty much planning to stay around it and take package excursions?

We stayed in a house in Palmilla along the cost (closer to San Jose ) and we needed a car to go to store and to Cabo or San Jose to see and do things.

Without a doubt spend a day fishing it is World Class. When it's Tuna season the sushi is really really good.

Yeah, you're going to have to hitch a ride to town.  Do it at least one day.  I think Mariscos las Tres Islas Restaurant was my favorite that we went to.  Walk around the marina for shopping and drinking.  Spend some time at The Office on the Beach, good sights and good lunch.

Looks like you'll be about a 15 minute drive from the main marina area, so you'll probably be using a taxi during your stay as well, unless your plan is to just stay on property.

I really liked the Hacienda Cocina at the Hacienda Beach club for a nice evening dinner.  Grabbing a water taxi out to the arch is a nice little excursion (do-able in 45-60 minutes).

After you land at the airport and pick up your bags/get through customs, DO NOT STOP until you get outside where the transportation services are. All of the people inside are selling timeshares. They will say they're with your transportation company and offer to help you and then bring you to a desk and try to give you free stuff for a 'tour'.

Please get into town as much as you can.  I've stayed at the Fiesta American.  Nice place, close to Cabo Del Sol for golfing, etc but the corridor is not where the action is.  Cabo is best when you explore downtown.  Some good recommendations so far.  Hacienda Cocina is phenomenal.  Maria Jiminez is awesome.  And if you get tired of Mexican Salvatore's is exceptional.  One lasagna can feed a family of 4.  I'm not kidding.  I often stay at Playa Grande so I can just walk to restaurants and explore.  Here are my favorites followed by Trappers List from Trip Advisor. PM if you have other questions.  Trip Advisor is your friend for transportation recommendations etc.  I've used their recommendations for private transport (will stop and get you beers on the way), SUV rentals, etc.  Have fun.  Heading their for a company trip (Pueblo Bonito Pacifica) in April, will extend for 4 days on our own in town.

Restaurants – there are many, many great restaurants and dive places to eat in Cabo – here are our favorites:

1) Hacienda Cocina Y Cantina - DO NOT MISS THIS PLACE. Make reservation in advance, dinner at sunset. Incredible views, food and value.  At Hacienda Residence Club.  http://haciendacocina.com/

2) Maria Jiminez - our absolute favorite local authentic Mexican place.  Great flank steak, chicken, chile rellenos
3) Las Mariscadas - terrific seafood (grilled whole snapper, etc). 2 X 1 on Los Cabos Passport Card
4) Salvatores - Italian. Lasagna and pork shank. Not just great Italian for Mexico, great Italian period.  You can split 1 lasagna between the two of you.  HUGE.
5) Gardenias - best lunch spot for fish and shrimp tacos and a cold beer
6) Burrito Surf - terrific burrito place. Bethany is a Cali girl from San Diego St. Another 2 X 1 on the Passport Card. Great stuff.
7) Gordo Lele's - dive taco place. Javier make great, cheap tacos and tortas, then will put on a wig and start playing Beatles tunes. Seriously.
8) Monkey Business - Miguel makes the best Margaritas in Cabo. All from scratch. Fresh squeezed.
9) Happy Endings - go see Gene, "El Jefe". 2 beers and 2 tequila shots for $5.
10) Sammy G's - Sports bar with terrific burgers/salads. Next to Salvatore's, same owners
11) Maro's Shrimp House - 2 lobster tails and 5 jumbo shrimp for $19. Party place.

12) Tiki Sushi Bar - very good sushi and a GREAT fish and chips for $5. Perfect for lunch on the marina. On Diner's Drive Ins and Dives
13) Solomon's Landing - another marina restaurant on Diner's, Drive Ins and Dives
14) Cabo Wabo - fun live band, DJ. Expensive drinks though.
15) Billygans - when you want the action on Medano Beach, walk up to the valet out front of Billygans. "Charo". Cool dude. Even if you don't have a car to park, give him a $5 and ask if he can set you up with some lounge chairs on the sand. Only go front row if you don't mind being hounded by the vendors. Otherwise get the 2nd or 3rd row. These guys are on top of it. They will have buckets of beers next to you in minutes, and will open one and hand you a cerveza and lime before you sit down. Great service all day long.
16) Senor Sweets. Got to have our gelato fix. Other side of the marina.

Desperardo's has great nachos.  Los Micheocanos has phenomenal carnitas.  Can buy by the kilo and take back to your resort.

Just an FYI, good advice for Cancun airport as well.

I was at Secrets in November.  It was about 45 minutes from Cabo. A van ride for 6 people cost $100 each way to get into town.  There is a nice restaurant called the Office in Cabo with phenomenal views.  The tattoo parlor across the street sells drugs. HTH

6 killed around Mexico resort of Los Cabos

Associated Press Fri, Mar 10 2:33 PM PST

SAN JOSE DEL CABO, Mexico (AP) — Prosecutors said six bodies had been found dumped on Thursday and Friday around the twin resorts of Cabo San Lucas and San Jose del Cabo at the southern tip of the Baja California peninsula, which has been the scene of increasing violence in recent months.

The prosecutors' office said a woman's body was discovered on a road leading to the airport along with several doses of methamphetamine and marijuana. The bodies of three men were found wrapped in plastic bags and a tarp in San Jose del Cabo and the bodies showed signs of torture. A man and a woman were found shot to death in the area near the airport.

Elsewhere in Mexico, prosecutors in the central state of Puebla said Friday that they had arrested 87 suspects linked to a kidnapping and fuel-theft gang.

The state prosecutors' office said members of the gang were responsible for killing three state detectives who were investigating kidnappings by the gang, known as "The Bucanans."

The agents' slaying earlier this week led to a huge operation in which police detained suspected gang members and police officers and a mayor who allegedly collaborated with the gang. Authorities seized 16 rifles, hand grenades and 4,600 rounds of ammunition.

The gang, whose nickname apparently refers to a liquor brand, allegedly controlled most illegal activity in the area around the town of Atzizintla near Puebla's border with Veracruz state.

When i moved to NM in the 70s, my buddies would go on two fishing trips a year - one (stag) to a tributary of the San Juan River where the freshwater shrimp made for huge trout (then mushrooms in Monument Valley, boating on Powell & gambling in Vegas), and to Cabo (with our ladies) to chase marlin and catch dorado (though i hooked a shark once that was the hardest work i ever did). The airport terminal was a circus tent (tremendously useful during hurricanes) and there were two hotels in town and one full-service resort hotel up the coast.

Best time i ever had in my life was (i remember it was the day Sadat got shot) flying in thru the eye of a hurricane (the circus tent drowned our porter when one of the bags he was carrying touched the canvas, just like a pup tent when youre camping), having the only driver willing to brave the dozens of flooded arroyos on the way to San Lucas, watching the weaker half of the hurricane blow through from a palapa and, being told there wouldnt be any fishing worth ####, me & my lady taking a canoe out the cove to a beach near a seal rock. Long story short, the seals played tag with us for hours - swimming str8 at us w their teeth bared by their speed thru the water, then veering their big white bellies past us like the truckers used to try to do with their trailers when i was a hitchhiker. Amazing ####.

Bet it's just like that now....

Exactly the same just more murders

Just an FYI, good advice for Cancun airport as well.
And when departing, avoid the guys trying to handle your luggage and ticketing for you. They're not employed by any airline and they want 500 pesos for their "service" (~$25).

Trip coming together nicely.  3 rounds of golf: Monday at the Tiger Woods course at Diamante, Wednesday at Cabo Del Sol, Friday at Quivira.  First 3 days at Casa Dorada right on Medano Beach, then 4 days at Pueblo Bonito Pacifica with the group.  Saturday night dinner at Bajo La Luna (hot new place), then stroll across the street to Cabo Wabo.  Sunday taking a larger group for IMO the best authentic Mexican food in Cabo at Maria Jimenez.  Sunday night at Hacienda Y Cocina, which is always awesome.  Friday night the CEO is taking a few of us out. It will be some place with big wine, thinking El Farallon (never been).  Will get to Gardenias for my fish taco fix.  Other than that it is pool, beach, massages, etc.   Can't wait.  Looks like 85 and sunny all week.

My son just got back from cabo on sunday night, him and 2 of his buddies went down for a 5 day spring break fiesta. I've barely had a second to catch up with him but 3 20 year olds managed to stay out of trouble and make it back in one piece, I'm guessing the partying was epic. Hopefully I'll get to talk about the trip tonight at dinner, I'm already starting to plan my own trip down there for May.

Epic week. Did all of the above except Diamante.  They wanted a timeshare presentation so played Palmilla instead.  Golf was spectacular. Saw whales breaching like crazy right off of 17 at Cabo Del Sol.  Bar Esquina is now a must add for dining when I'm in Cabo.  Awesome. Hacienda Cantina was phenomenal.  Lots of nights out. 35 of us took over Cabo Wabo last night. Detox needed.

Depends on time of year but shorts and a short sleeve button up shirt work well the majority of the time.  It's really casual down there.  I wear some good leather sandals no socks.  Can do lighter weight pants and a long sleeve shirt cuffed up too especially if it gets cooler or a little windier at night.  Some nicer restaurants have a no shorts policy.  I don't take jeans to Cabo.

For the ladies flat shoes are a must unless you want to break your ankle.  The streets/sidewalks are in horrendous condition.  Summer dresses, capri's, a layer for night time for non summer months.

Yo Judge!

Assuming you endorse pueblo bonito pacifico? Looks like you’ve been there a few times. ~$3600 for a week including airfare and transfer via costco. Looks super nice.

Thanks

Yep. Very nice place. PB Shuttle or cab into town.  Costco has some very good deals

If you are staying closer to San Jose, Flora Farm is not to be missed. Not a go get ####ed up with the fellas kind of place, but fantastic for couples and families. Self contained property in the hills. Farm to table (you are actually on the farm), boutiques, bar, live music. One of a kind experience that I cannot recommend enough.

headed down there for the first time in late october, for my buddies wedding.  we are staying at the hyatt ziva.  anyone been recently?

scuba recommendations?

what's the best way to get to town?  private?  or have the hotel call someone?

anyone do the swim with dolphins?  my kid wants to do it.

authentic lunch in town?

thanks all!

Has anyone here snorkeled in Cabo? I'm taking a cruise there this December and would like some recommendations as we'd have about 4-5 hours for beachy activity.

After you land at the airport and pick up your bags/get through customs, DO NOT STOP until you get outside where the transportation services are. All of the people inside are selling timeshares. They will say they're with your transportation company and offer to help you and then bring you to a desk and try to give you free stuff for a 'tour'.
Yep, exactly. I was gonna throw that in too until I saw your post. They reeled us in making us think they were part of our shuttle team- total lies. Then when we found our van we had to wait for other booked folks to arrive. Spent an extra hour or so at the airport after a long travel from FL to get there.

If you surf, stay at Cabo Surf- great break right in front of the hotel with boards available to rent. Very good restaurant onsite.

We went for my niece's wedding last August. The wedding at the hotel we stayed, Cabo Surf.

There were about 60 people who flew in for the wedding. Most were taking cabs to get anywhere. We discovered the public bus system, excellent new AC buses and very cheap.

That’s good to know.  Did the bus run regularly?  Did it feel safe?  Wife and daughter and all.

Yes and yes. The front desk gave us the bus schedule and the stop was right in front of the hotel. The locals use it of course and we don't know too much Spanish but it was a friendly vibe.

We did, but I can't remember where it was.  I think it was tagged onto some whale watching excursion, but that may have been separate, it's been like 5-6 years since I was there.

Snorkeling is nothing like the Caribbean or Hawaii. Not close. Don’t recommend it near Medano/arch.

They go to Santa Maria bay or Chileno Bay but the only really good spot I heard is Cabo Pulmo

leaving in 2 weeks.  pretty stoked!  we are flying out of TJ, which saved us $1000.  there is a terminal on the US side of the border, with a concourse bridge that takes you directly into the airport.  pretty cool.

anyone do the ATV's?

Was there with the wife this past year for a milestone anniversary. Kinda went high-end to celebrate and stayed at the Esperanza, which I have nothing but incredible things to say about.

I don't know about general snorkeling, but we took a day trip to La Paz with a company out of Cabo to swim with whale sharks. Phenomenal experience.

did you get to see any whale sharks?  that's awesome!  which company did you use?

@Judge Smails do you know if any of the atv companies will let a 13 year old drive?  my kid wants to do it and we've done pismo.   as far as i can tell, mexico has stricter laws about driving an atv than CA.  wtf?  it's mexico, for the love of pete
