Zach Orr retiring (1 Viewer)

Just as he takes over and looks great. Tough break, GL to him.

On to the part that matters for our rosters.... is the replacement ILB on the roster already, and someone we might be able to add?

Nevermind. found it at NFL.com

Doctors initially told Orr he was at risk of death or paralysis by playing with the condition, which he's had since birth. But former Baylor quarterback Seth Russell told Orr he should visit Sanford Emery, a West Virginia spine specialist who treated Russell when he suffered a neck injury in 2015.

Russell's advice sparked another round of medical evaluations. Orr said several doctors have told him he's at no more risk of serious injury than a player with a fully formed spine. Doctors told Orr their only concern would be if he played with herniated discs. The herniated discs he suffered last season have subsided.

"As far as me physically, mentally, I'm ready to go," Orr said. "I'm feeling better than ever. I'm feeling like I have these past offseasons and everything like that. So I'm ready to go."

There's another twist to Orr's story: If he chooses to play again, he can sign with any team immediately as an unrestricted free agent. If he hadn't retired, he would've been a restricted free agent this offseason.

Orr didn't file retirement papers in January and the Ravens didn't place him on their reserve/retired list because no one expected him to play again. The period to extend tenders to restricted free agents has passed without the Ravens tendering Orr -- a move the Ravens didn't consider because they assumed he would stay retired.

I cut him in dynasty league, and biggest competition in my league picked him up today.   :yucky:

Looks like Ravens may have dropped the ball on this one too.  Never placed him on reserve/retired list, and never tendered him as a RFA, making him a UFA.

I grabbed him back in my dynasty leagues this morning.  Full credit to pyite76 for the heads-up.

On MFL he's listed with an "out" designation thanks to his free agent status, which means depending in your league rules, you may be able to stash him on IR.

Where would be the most interesting landing spots for him?  Might he return to Baltimore?  Oakland, Detroit, NO would be good situations, and I see he has a visit with the Lions already set up.

He still has to pass a physical and make it through training camp, etc- Maybe it's a money grab, or the love of football, and I don't want to play the what if card...but one bad hit/tackle/landing and he could be paralyzed for life....only get one shot at it(life that is) walk away when you still can Zach.

I blame you pyite76

stop hitting up Orr on Twitter ?

I am going to be cautiously aggressive on waivers.  4 leagues run tonight, FAAB, but I'm not going to bid more than 2-3% on any of them.  He's gotta find a team willing to put him on the field with a condition that was described less than 6 months ago as "risking serious injury or even death".  He's gotta stay healthy,  And he was on GMFB today talking about rehabbing a shoulder as well.

Any news on this? I listened to some interviews and they sound promising. I think I am still in shock... I'm about to draft him...

Dropped him when I heard he was retiring. Tempted to re-acquire now that he's attempting to continue his career. As someone mentioned already, he's listed as "Out" in MFL. In my league, he's not available to be added. That must be due to the way my commish has the settings? Or is that across all of MFL? Are those of you who have added him back playing on a different site?

That's a league-specific setting to not show players who are not on NFL rosters.  Commish can set it in the transactions settings.

Would this guy please stop visiting places where I've got a guy in place and go somewhere else?  First DET, then the Jets and IND.  If this is any indicator, his next stop figures to be CIN or DEN.

Wth, go back to BAL, or over to OAK or DAL and sign the contract already.

lol.... Stay the hell out of Detroit! I drafted Jarrad based on his expected role. OAK & CIN are no good, either. I would be happy with Dallas, since I couldn't get him off the wire I and have no stake in Big D.

Wondering if I should try and sell in the next 24 hours

But Im thinking i will get a 5th/6th in return

if he  does stay fit and make a roster Im talking 90-120 tackles

Hold and sweat i think

OAK makes just too much sense. They desperately need a player and mentor for a couple of younger guys, and i think the could construct a nice prove it contract for both sides.

Orr is in a large sellers market right now.  Why would he sign a prove it contract?

If he signs with Detroit, I'd expect Whitehead to be cut in a corresponding move. Orr would play WILL and Davis remains at MIKE.

Because he has a neck that needs to prove itself to be NFL capable again

Its nothing to do with his ability.

You miss the point.  There are several suitors.  If he clears their medicals - and apparently he has - there is no incentive for him to sign a prove it contract when another team will likely give him multiple years.  Why would he settle for a 1 year deal?

It may be an incentive based deal to protect the team if his neck forces him to re-retire, but I agree he's not likely to sign a 1 year deal anywhere.

This is my point. It might not appear to be a one year deal, but I bet it is structured to protect the team in case of any other neck issues. If he proves his neck is ok, the multiple years will kick in.

Remember when David Wilson came back? It flared up almost immediately.

I like Orr and as an owner Id like to see him in Oakland.

but my excitement will be muted for a few weeks until we see he is ok.

Not being signed yet can't be a good sign.  If he hasn't found someone to roll the dice on his neck by now, will he ever?

Seems like he decided to come back at the worst possible time.

I would be shocked if he still wants to play and isn't on an NFL roster after week#2 in an absolute worst case scenario.

This isn't like the aging vets that don't have jobs yet (Barnidge, DeAngelo), this is a 24 year old that teams should be falling all over to bring in to compete and learn.  Those old guys cost a lot of money and don't really need a lot of reps so bringing them in now just serves to take valuable reps away from guys teams need to learn more about, but Orr is one of those guys that teams need to learn more about.  I suppose he could be looking for way too much money but we haven't even heard of an offer or any interest at all post-visit.  NFL teams don't miss chances to add pieces like this, there's gotta be something there if they haven't jumped yet.

It's barely been more than a week since Orr got other medical opinions that allow him to play again.  There are allegedly up to 18 teams interested in speaking with him.  TCs don't start for a while yet.  Of course he hasn't signed yet.

I have him in one league, and lost him in another, where I cut him after the retirement, and someone snapped him up when this news broke.

You have to wonder about the NFL's opinion of his neck, and his talent.  If he was as good a LB as we all think he is because of his tackle numbers, wouldn't someone have made a move?  The timing of him entering the market is no big deal.  Plenty of teams with money, and nowhere reasonable to spend it, plenty of teams that need a MLB.

It's possible this is just a question about his neck.  Maybe even probable.  I think it's also possible that teams didn't grade him very well, and he was just a compiler, in terms of tackle numbers, rather than an impact LB.

And now?

Yeah my excitement at getting him on waivers has pretty much evaporated now

Horrible feeling that teams might see him as a post week 1 signing in case of neck injury issues. I cannot hold him that long.

Feels like this ship has sailed.

I'm still keeping him in as many leagues as I can, but not holding out hope.

You were awful quick and dismissive of the question/concern I had about the timing and wondering how you see it now.  Seemed like a pretty straightforward question.

I'm certain I don't need to explain this to you, but since you're taking this stance I guess I'll have to.

Well before TC the reports were that Orr had been cleared by other doctors than the first one he saw.  Numerous teams were reported to be interested - for good reason.  Given that it was after OTAs but before TC there was no urgency for Orr not to seek his best deal.  Since that time teams have kicked the tires and it appears no one is comfortable taking the risk with his health.  So his opportunities have changed significantly since that post.  It happens.

So what exactly are you looking for here?

Zachary Orr - LB -  Free Agent

The Miami Herald's Barry Jackson reports free agent LB Zachary Orr (neck) has yet to be medically cleared.

Orr retired shortly after last season due to a neck issue, but he quickly announced his desire to return to playing after receiving second and third opinions. Unfortunately for him, it's going to be tough to gain clearance from an NFL club during this day and age. The Dolphins are looking for linebacker help.
