Star Wars The Last Jedi Episode 8 thread: this thread sucks, you should avoid it even after you've seen the movie (1 Viewer)

I think people have forgotten how to enjoy a ####### movie
Are all movies enjoyable? If not, what makes them not so?

Raiders of the Lost Ark is one of the best movies of all time. That doesn't mean I'm required to like Temple of Doom or Crystal Skull.

I don't recall Luke's and Kylo's light sabers ever hitting.  I remember Kylo taking a swing at Luke and Luke doing some matrix like move to duck under the blow.  And then Kylo swinging through Luke.  I need to watch it again.
Maybe not but the dice and the fact he kissed Leia on the forehead. The point remains.

Guys, less "philosophically the issues with the film were" and more "holy ####, that "Pew Pew Pew" was ####### awesome!

If this movie had NO plot, or worse yet, porn level plot and acting, I'd still enjoy it for the visuals and fights and space scenes alone.

Threepio seems to look at Luke quizzically because as a droid he can detect that he’s not actually there, and Luke seems to suggest he keep it to himself, without saying it outright. It’s a good moment to re-watch.

Leia too knows this from the outset, as the dice he gives her are also a Force projection with no actual weight to them.

Luke doesn’t just show up with a haircut, he’s actually younger, as you can see there’s no longer grey in his beard. He looks like he did in the Kylo-Jedi Temple flashback.

Luke does not make red footsteps in the salt as the camera focuses on his feet, indicating he’s just air.

During the brief swordfight, Luke only dodges, their lightsabers never actually make any contact.

Porn would be a welcome addition to the star wars universe

i thought there were several mind blowing scenes, I loved the music, and i liked the fact that there were like 5 different stories all going on at the same time.

The cinematography for the salt battle, with the stark white and red was beyond stunning.

Im gonna have to see this again, soon.

Maybe I'll hit up a 10:30 am that's like 5 bucks at the alamo drafthouse (to be honest, I have no desire to see a movie anywhere other than a place with recliner chairs that don't sardine pack you in, at the least - full bar and menu service to your seat is a nice bonus!

All the theatres around me have done the big reclining seats thing

I have been reading a lot of Rian Johnson's comments.

He seems to hate the idea of a movie becoming a wiki page as he feels back story is unnecessary and at times a deterrent.

I wonder how this point of view will work in 10-12 since we won't have any characters from which we know to anchor the movies.

I did notice the last two.

It's very obvious he hates back storys. We barely got any on anyone.  Even the retelling of the Luke/ben solo confrontation multiple times was as short as possible like he really didn't even want to do it.

I guess we won't know until 9 to see if JJ goes back and fixes some of the lack of backstory to his liking or just leaves it as is (and if he leaves it, it might be what he originally intended any way)

I can't think of too many people I need a backstory on at this point.  Snoke is dead and doesn't matter anymore.  Finn was a slave/stormtrooper.  That seems to be good enough.  If Rey's parents were really nobody, then that's good enough too.  I guess it'd be interesting to see some additional backstory on Kylo, but I don't feel it's necessary.  Maybe as another off year film that focuses on him and the rise of the First Order.

I was kind of thinking the same thing.  What do we need to know more about for this story to continue?  How much did we know in the original movies?

How much of the New Order did Finn sweep anyway?

Pretty good gigs being janitor on both Starkiller Base and the head dreadnaught.

I think he will.  JJ seems to be a more traditional story teller

Why don't they just do a movie on the battle of Jakku right after Return of the Jedi? The uber nerds can get their "Luke kicking ###" erections in the theatre  and then....maybe they'll get some appreciation for this film.

Many, but not all here in Dallas. Far far fewer options back on Long Island, probably due to cost for space
Did they open a draft house on Long Island?   I love the one in Yonkers and know there’s one in Brooklyn. Think Staten Island is getting one

Nope.  the Yonkers and BK are the closest.  And needless to say, it defeats the entire point of going to the movies to get liquored up if you need to get from either of those locations back to LI!

One Luke Skywalker, there is.  One always, there will be.
I think they could tell some awesome stories in the 30 years between 6 and 7 but people will lose their #### if they recast, which sucks.

Edit: maybe they'll do an animated series one day

Well, Star Wars obviously has some legs to it (they might be onto something here!).   In 15 or 20 years, we will be in our 60's - don't know that there is the same relationship with the kids unfortunate enough to have been raised with the Sequels as their first exposure to Star Wars.

That's been thoroughly shredded several times.
It has?  That’s actually pretty funny because I wouldn’t care whether it was true or not, it was a fantastic movie.  And it’s been so long since I’ve watched Indy I don’t know if It’s true but if you say it isn’t I’ll beleive it.

Those movies could...introduce new characters? Like normal movies do?

That is my entire point.

Since movies 10-12 are going to have entire casts where we know nothing about them and Johnson appears to hate to provide background on new characters, I am interested to see how it is going to work out from a story point of view.

There’s no way they move forward with him based on these declining receipts

What backstory was missing from the last movie that you thought was necessary? I'm not asking in a snide fashion, I thought it was fine in that regard.

Johnson's trilogy is going to be a whole different thing somewhere else, right? He's an intelligent filmmaker, and, despite what some might see as some "rebellious" tendencies, he's still tethered to a multi-billion dollar franchise/corporation. He can't just make experimental films or something.

can you expand on this more?  TLA had the second largest opening in history and there is no second weekend yet to see the drop off rate.  The movie is already at $573m

Projections are sill pointing to over $2b

“Last Jedi” Tuesday was $20.3 million vs. $37 mil for “Force Awakens” on its first Tuesday. That’s around 42% off. $17 million is a big difference.  Monday and Tuesday are big days for adults going to the movies, so this development is a little surprising. Almost every other film increased from Monday to Tuesday by quite a lot. Only “Last Jedi” declined, by 6%. Again, Monday and Tuesday are days when adults come out and sample “smart” movies. For some reason, their interest in “Star Wars” less than was imagined.
