Bahama trip advice needed. (1 Viewer)

Good afternoon.

Girlfriend and I are about to book a trip to the Bahamas for early June and was wondering if any FBGs had any recommendations on resorts to stay at? Last year we went to DR and stayed at excellence resort based off the thread here, which was an awesome experience.

Any input would be appreciated.

I thought Nassau was awful.  Dirty and touristy.

The Abacos, particularly Hope Town, is paradise. If you could somehow find a charter in Marsh Harbour to take you around to the best places in the Abacos, that'd be the way to go.

I had a unique experience in the Bahamas. I was with a group of Boy Scouts that spent a week on a sailboat going from island to island. The scouts chartered a boat captained by a guy that basically lives down there for months at a time. He knew all the best snorkeling/diving areas. It was an incredible trip that is probably replicatabke if you can find a local like that. Many islands have places to stay or rent if you look for them. At least they did on Hope Town and I think Guana Cay.

And if you do get to Hope Town, make sure you get a conch burger at Munchies!

I've been to quite a few of the islands though The Bahamas, and I guess it comes down to what you want to do.  If you're the "all inclusive" type, there are maybe a few on Nassau that are ok, but as Andy says above, much of it is "dirty and touristy."  If you want a true "get away", some of the "out islands" would be better - but then travel in and out can get tricky (small island hopping planes, and water taxis and such).  I personally really like Abacos, and Eleuthera/Harbour Island.

x3 on the out-islands > nassau (but they're not easy/cheap to get to)...

Is there any reason you picked Nassau? If you're looking for cheap/easy destinations, look at Punta Cana, Riviera Maya, Costa Rica, etc.

There are flights into Marsh Harbour so you don't HAVE to go through Nassau. More expensive though.
And "North Eleuthera", but really just incoming flights from Florida.  That's how I do it about half the time.  DC to either Miami or Ft. Lauderdale - then from there to the smaller out island airport near where I'll be.

Hmm thanks guys. I really prefer easy travel. Will look into flying directly into Marsh Harbor and North Eleuthera.

FYI - These places are nothing like Punta Cana (if that's what you're looking for). Its mostly an older vacation crowd in rural settings. There are no resorts, nightlife, casinos, or shopping, The food (other than fresh seafood) will most likely suck and everything is going to be WAAAYYY more expensive. The natural beauty of this area is off-the-charts though and its a fishing/snorkeling paradise if you're into that sort of thing.

Good to know thanks. Any suggestions of other places to go similar to punta Cana? We live in Houston and don't really want a super long flight?

Been to Nassau and Freeport.  Really did not care for either one and would not go back.

Have had friends that stayed in smaller areas though and loved it.

Riviera Maya (Cancun) or Jamaica? Both should have direct flights. I love the area around Riviera Maya (Cenotes, caves, etc), but the seaweed in the water and on the beaches was really bad the last two times I was there. People say Jamaica is great if you're OK spending most of your time at the resort (Ive never been since we prefer to explore). Costa Rica is very cool, but requires a bit of traveling to get to the coast after you fly into San Jose.

All depends on what you're looking to do.  There are some awesome places throughout The Bahamas if what you want is a quiet getaway where you could snorkel, fish, relax....but maybe you want something with some nightlife and shopping and stuff to do.

This is all pretty true.

If you're looking for five star dining and neon lights, the smaller islands aren't for you.

But if a cheeseburger in paradise is okay if the trade of is ultra relaxation on magnificent beaches with post card sunsets and no crowds of overweight cruise ship denizens to wade through then they are THE spot.

I'm not kidding when I say I was revolted by The Atlantis. But that thing just isn't my style.

I'm headed to Atlantis with the wife and kids this summer.  Has anyone stayed there?  Aside from it being ridiculously overpriced (which I'm expecting) was it a good experience?  Any must-dos?

Uhh...I meant that I LOVED The Atlantis and can't wait to return.

:lmao:   My kids will be 8 & 4 and we were between Atlantis and a Disney Cruise.  So I figured either way I was going to be out 8K - at least the Bahamas sounds relaxing and I won't feel out of place if I get sloppy drunk.  Any advice to make the experience better?

I might be unfair to the Atlantis since I just spent the day there (had a 24 hour layover). The reality was just so far from what I'd imagined that I think it scarred me.

But there is a casino in the hotel if that's your thing. Lots of restaurant and shopping choices nearby.

The beach seemed crowded but I don't know if it was overly so.

The wait time for things like the water park/slide and dolphins seemed long, but that's expected.

I'm not really backtracking. You should know that my tastes in just about everything are not "normal".

Get a refund. Book a trip to Punta Cana / Riviera Maya for $4k instead. Buy something super-awesome for $4k.

How about a must-don't, especially with kids.  Don't leave the resort area unless in a shuttle or similar.  The area immediately around it isn't the safest.  Anyway, the aquarium there is pretty famous (for a few reasons).

You would feel out of place drunk on a cruise?

  you forgot leave the kids at home and actually enjoy yourself.
I should have checked in with the FFA before booking...what was I thinking?!?

Maybe it is just me but I'd be nervous about getting plastered with Minnie Mouse and Ariel wandering about.

There's Atlantis and the main Nassau downtown shopping street. The rest is pretty dumpy and unsafe.
