That is horrific.

Heap was one of my favorite players.

For people who don't know, he once gave away a million dollars anonymously but when a reporter figured out it was Heap and called his home his wife didn't even know.  He has continued to be involved in the Ravens Goodwill fund raising event that has brought in over two million dollars and it would not surprise me if he did other charitable works.  

I just can't imagine what he and his family are going through with and it sounds like he was impaired so it makes me think that the concussions he suffered may have played a role.

My bad, I misread the ESPN story that mentioned 'NO signs of impairment'.  I am sure it was just a tragic accident but he was forced to retire after suffering numerous concussions before CTE was discovered.

I belong to a support group and this happens more than you think. My heart goes out to him and the family :(

Agree. This is absolutely tragic and my heart goes out to Heap and his family. 

When I saw this story I was so hoping it was a fake.  So tragic, I feel sick. 

What a tragic, awful story. Makes me feel ill just thinking about it. 

Couldn't imagine. Makes you question everything.

I understand the point you are trying to make on how incredibly sad one would be but I think most of us pick up the pieces and move forward.  It's not easy but not continuing your life isn't going to bring back the one you have lost.

No but it would end the pain. 

There's no right  or wrong answers here.

It's just pain and suffering and sadness no matter how you slice it.

And piles and piles of regret and second guessing every step you made in those fateful moments.

My infant son died because he had a two chamber heart after surviving for six months. There were days I didn't want to live after that and second guessed my decisions about certain medical procedures that I allowed to happen.

He will hurt inside for years if not for life. Hopefully he has a strong family and friend network that can support him through the initial shock and pain.  

As a parent (and one being 3 years old) I cannot even begin to imagine... I feel so badly for Heap and his family. Such a sad event. I really hope he overcomes this mentally someday.

Sorry for your loss. I lost my 3 month old last year and it hurts every day.

Every Parent's nightmare.  Man it weighs so heavy on my heart anytime I hear this stuff.  It amazes me how some are able to move forward in life and take a tragedy and turn it to good.  Hopefully the Heap family can do that.  I can't imagine ever recovering from something like this without my faith in God.  Definitely praying for this family.  And also for those in this thread who have experienced loss.

Words on a message board can't even come close to expressing how much I'm sorry for both of your losses. I can't imagine the pain but you are both working through it and many would not have the strength to carry on as you both have been able to do.

Heart-breaking. My condolences go out to Heap, his family, and those parents in this thread who have had to endure a similar nightmare. I don't think "mortifying' is the right word here.
