So I go visit this right wing hack site and plastered all over the place is stories like massive malware outbreak,99 Nations attacked, hospitals crippled, trains snarled, ect ect.

So I'm thinking this is a big deal so I should check out some reputable news site like CNN to get the truth.

http://www.cnn.com/2017/05/12/politics/michelle-obama-school-meal-changes-trump-administration/index.html

And three more articles like it. Then.

I'm glad we have real news to show us the things that matter most and not be distracted by fake news.

It was the featured news yesterday (because it happened overnight thursday).  Also, it is still the first story under Top Stories.

Sorry to pull the rug out from under your hard hitting thread.

We are using Webroot now. It's the only software that I know of directly that has actually stopped ransomware attacks during the attack. RW usually disables antivirus/anti-malware. But webroot runs in the cloud so once it is disabled the computer immediately recognizes it and reinstalls, shutting down the RW.

wonder if this glitch was the cause of some nefarious monkey shines i encountered this morning ... i hardly experience any shenanigans, but ran across some doozies earlier - had to run a complete anal cavity-like scan/search on my machine.

all turned out well, but haven't seen the likes of this kinda chicanery since i was on dial-up AOL with zero protection

Macs have had 3 ransomware attacks in the last year. They're not invulnerable.
Never said they were but it's much much much easier to avoid. I haven't run antivirus anything in over a decade. Common sense + less popular OS + solid security = no real concern for malware.

got my gf and daughter Pad Pros, and iPhones - i'm the holdout with my 'droid OS (Galaxy phone) and Windows (PC and laptop) - today was an unwelcomed reminder of the vulnerability.

that being said ... weren't all of the victims of the Fappenings compromised via iCloud or something similar?

I hate political threads, but love it when someone tries to make something that is apolitical into one, yet has no clue what they are talking about. Great work here.

The story of the 22 year old researcher stumbling upon the means to stop the spread of the attack is really fascinating.  I wonder, though, why the attackers bothered including such a mechanism... to think, registering a simple domain name (albeit a jumbled series of characters) is what has stopped the spread of the attack.  Just nuts.

But they ARE uninteresting to hackers and really not all that worth hacking due to lower ROI on hackers efforts so they are generally left alone.
Agreed and I hope the trend continues so I can continue to benefit from the relative anonymity to the hackerdork culture.

I find it odd that this story hasn't received more discussion here.  It's a pretty massive story, easily the biggest of the last few days.

I also found the statement by MSFT interesting:

http://www.cnbc.com/2017/05/12/microsoft-responds-to-global-hacking-cyberattack.html

I think it's a tough position for Microsoft to be in.  You have gov't agencies identifying and creating systems to exploit systems, then when those get leaked/hacked, MSFT is left holding the bag.

Until the OS is put on machines that are responsible for substantial protection of sensitive data, I don't think you have anything to worry about.  As it is today, most of the hackers have their eyes set on big business.  The reason the average person gets affected by these sorts of attacks are a byproduct of being on the same OS as these big businesses.

Agreed 100%.

The sad part about this is that it was likely due to NSA stockpiling vulnerabilities, and when they were leaked, wrought havoc across the world.

Remember this when legislators are lobbying for backdoors to encryption.  If you have a backdoor to encryption, it's no longer encryption.  If you have a backdoor to a system to be used by law enforcement against criminals, it will inevitably be exploited by criminals.

This is a perfect example of why technology creators should not intentionally weaken their software/hardware just to make things easier for law enforcement to access.

True, my Commodore 64 never gets attacked.

Apparently these were sloppy hacks.  Between the kill switch, which they did a second time with a new variant and another research registered the domain to stop the new attack within minutes of its release, and the mechanism they developed for collecting payments and providing decryption keys, which isn't automated and has to be done entirely manually, some are saying this was done by amateurs.  I've also read that some do not believe that profit was the motivating factor, given the poorly designed payment collection mechanism, and that this was a group wanting to embarrass the NSA.

Definitely Russians.

Michelle Obama's school lunches was one of the funniest things of Obama's presidency.  Seeing the pictures of those pathetic "healthy" lunches was hilarious.  I wonder if she was in charge of meal planning at Ja Rules Fyre Music fest.  The styrofoam container with a piece of bread and lettuce looked just like an Obama lunch.
